Here are the results after a run on OCCT CPU Linpack. The same conditions have been followed from my previous attempt. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5897152&postcount=1157

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

The biggest surprise for me here is that the temps never exceeded 71*C. Also, from the data on the graphs, because the temps never passed 71*C, the CPU never throttled at the 75*C mark. Throughout the entire test, the 920XM was rolling 2.13GHz. Theoretically, the final additions to the CPU heatsink mod along with the perforated backpanel dropped the CPU temps in a WCS by a good 4*C minimum. If the 75*C restriction was removed, then that minimum would be even greater. I no longer need to run the test again with Turbo Boost disabled as the temps are just so low now; in fact, the finished design keeps the 920XM @ 2.13GHz cooler than my previous run with my 920XM locked to 2GHz.

Consider the NDA on the CPU portion of the W870CU cooling overhaul lifted. As I've said before, the GPU heatsink will take longer for me to complete as it is larger and the surface topography on the GPU heatsink is more complex. But I can promise you that the entire face of the GPU heatsink is going to be covered just like the CPU heatsink.

When you'll be done with it, that thing is going to weight a tonne. Still very nice.

This is by far the heaviest piece of portable machinery I have owned. The larger PSU and the additional heatsinking really does take a toll on mobility (my back). It kind of goes back to my original philosophy on the W860CU. Though the W860CU has smaller radiators, shorter fans, and less intakes, it's still a much more portable notebook than the W870CU. Even though it is equipped to take the 920XM, the W860CU doesn't seem to tame it very well per to the reasons stated above. I'm still adamant against getting a second HDD to put in the empty HDD bay on my notebook, so I'm spared the extra weight. I just can't see myself using RAID 0 or 1, or using a boot/storage setup. I'll just keep that bay empty or tape a stick drive in there for emergency storage.

Do you ever regret getting the W870CU over the W860CU?

I have 48 of those babies myself but I really can't use them on my D901C, unless I take out the fans which may not be a good idea

Not one bit. But know that had I not come from a previous 17 incher, my M570TU, I would have had second thoughts about not getting the W860CU.

The purity of the copper is what drove up the cost from the previous blocks I used. But I was able to get them in bulk for cheap from a buddy of mine down south.

The D901C and D900F have perfect cooling designs. The fans rest right ontop of the component cold plate with the radiators just centimeters away. It's most effective because the heatpipes are kept short.

Hemi, I'm thinking of buying the CLEVO W870CU from rjtech
    (http://rjtech.com/shop/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29836)

with the 920XM and 5870. Anyways, what I'm wondering is; how's the cooling system on the 870? is it good enough for extended periods of rendering/gaming/other CPU AND Gpu intensive tasks?

EDIT: Where do the air get sucked in? through the bottom of the machine? (ugh), or the top? or the sides?

    /Eri

The cooling system is strong. Air is sucked in from the bottom.

Never order from them so just trying to get an idea.

    Thanks!

All four of my Clevo's including my latest W870CU were purchased from RJTech, yes. You can also buy barebones from Sager, ProStar, and Eurocom, though it's still going to be their branded version. Just ask them about it.

    I should have said "non-Sager" branded Clevo's ;)

I wouldn't order anything from Eurocom and don't have any experience with Prostar (aren't they a part of Sager?).

I don't have anything against Eurocom so I don't have anything to say about them. But I know you saw all the cannon fire going their way lately from other users. ProStar is not affiliated with Sager. They are their own company and they are, in my opinion, the more genuine and responsible seller to buy from if pressed to pick between Sager and ProStar.

Well, on their site it says the order will be shipped out within 3-5 business days.

So what's the point of overnight shipping? lol

I guess if they ship quicker then it'd be worth it.

Doesn't matter. I am still awaiting full payment for the G73 so it gives me time before the wife knows whats going on :D

Usually they prepare your notebook faster than 3-5 business days. With my W870CU, I placed my order on day one, they shipped it out on day three, and I received it on day four. The shipping was fast because I live in the same shipping zone as RJTech, so snail mail comes next day or second day for me. And that was during the launch of the new Clevo models so you're probably going to get a speedy ship out too.

You're going to love the display. Whether you get the AUO or the HSD, it's going to be stunning.

Yeah both of these machines use the same Hannstar display and i think someone said the AUO was even nicer ?... So if thats the case then you could end up with something even better which is a major bonus considering how nice the G73 screen already was....

Yes. I had both. My first W870CU had the HannStar and the one now has the AUO. I definitely like the AUO better. I think it is all around brighter, crisper and seemingly more vibrant in colors. The HannStar was nice though.

Hemi have you run into many or any issues using that 120w PSU and the 920 during gaming ?...

Im still debating on this machine or the X8100 but i have a 920 sitting here so i know that would be going in the machine but i was a tad concerned about the PSU under normal conditions... I know if you run Prime and Furmark together it will cut off from what i heard but those are hardly regular conditions....

That's the thing. I have not run into issues with only a 120 PSU. Granted I have not for hours at a time gamed but I have done tons of stress tests for long periods and such with no flickering or other concerning things happening. Any way you could always get the 160w that Soviet did for his easily.

Yeah i was not sure how much of a gamer you were so thats why i figured id ask you :)...

I know Soviet did the PSU mod and i have a 180w Universal PSU Lite-on here as well if need be but i generally like to stick with what comes with the machine if i can .... 120 seems rather skimpy but if it works ok under normal conditions then i would not be the least bit concerned...

    Waiting?

    Pfffffft.

    No such thing ;)

Nah, the X8100 was never an option for me so I have no reason to wait, unlike you two ;) I completely understand why. Swapping and selling 2 cards would be more of a PITA than just one and the 5870 isn't confirmed yet for the X8100, right?

@babyhemi..... nice! The W870CU with the prospect of the 5870 has certainly caught my eye! ;)

The W870CU will fail when running a CPU and GPU stress test in parallel. 120W is not enough for that kind of situation. The rule of thumb for the true rating for fanless PSU's is 20-25% over it's rated max. In this case, 150-160W.

Exactly. When I had mine, I gamed and gamed on it for hours at a time. Never did it even hint at having a problem.

Worth noting is that you had the 280M (right?), if so; it draws less wattage than a 5870.

I think? That could potentially be a problem.

How does one go about swapping the PSU? And where do you get a new one? If it was a desktop i'd just lol and swap it out for a new one; but I am not very familiar with kitting/modding out lappies.

The MR 5870 has a lower power draw and heat output compared to the GTX 280M. The MR 5870 has not been released for the W870CU yet so nobody knows if the notebook can sit through a system wide PSU stress test.

Ideally, you would want to get a PSU with the same voltage output as the original as the internal resistance (impedance) would be identical. In the service manual, different voltage outputs can be used, but aren't guaranteed to be safe because of various electrical reasons that would take up more time to type than I have time left in this lecture here in class.

You can buy and mod the 220W PSU that is used for the D900F and M980NU/X8100, but they are really big and, in my opinion, is a bit of a waste since a fully loaded W870CU running a WCS test will not get anywhere close to the maximum output of the 220W PSU. 160W or 180W PSU's are the sweet spot in the middle and have enough power to keep the W870CU's thirst for power quenched.

The highest I've hit with my 920/5870 combo was 176W under full CPU load.

    280M draws more, actually.
