    Ah.. Cool :D

Thanks! So, just swapping out the PSU, nice :)

But gaming/rendering should be fine then? (without cpu upgrade) ^^

btw, lol; hey Sleey0, Mandrake! ^^

If you do not plan to get this notebook with the 920XM, then you're good to go. The chance of the notebook backpedaling during a realistic situation will be lower with an 820QM or 720QM. A lot of people in the Clevo forum have run all kinds of extremely stressful applications (that aren't stress tests) in different combinations that utilize both the CPU and the GPU; games, encoding, rendering, production, analysis, etc. But all of them have yet to report a system failure due to power shortage. Resellers keep telling us that the only reason that people are b*tching about power issues is because they are running stress tests, which has no service in entertainment or production. And I agree with that. They are correct because stress tests are simply programs that make your components operate at it's limit and eat up a lot of power and expend heat and contribute to nothing other than finding where your notebook stands in regards to it's limits. This is ideally only supposed to be done once, if not only a handful of times to eliminate statistical deviation, as once you find the limit, theres really no reason to repeat the process again unless you don't have central heating at home. In short, the users are the ones making the problem, not the notebook. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5930280&postcount=290. However, like I've said before, there will be a time in the future where the user will need to run legitimate applications that do stress the components enough that the PSU cannot keep up with them. But I can tell you right now, that time is nowhere close to now. Expect that time to be around four years in the future where we will probably saddle up with the technology of that time by then.

But all is not lost of course. You can always buy that larger PSU when you feel it's time to "power proof" your notebook.

I can solder, but never done anything like a PSU cable.

Any chance you can make a guide or give some tips?

All of Li-Shin's PSU's are quality built. When you open up the 120W PSU, aside from the huge heatplates that can pretty much pass off as aluminium bullion, there is a buttload of solder than holds down the DC terminals to the PCB. I had to use an industrial grade 35W soldering iron from the engineering stockroom at my university to melt the two mountains of solder anchoring the terminals to free the cable. Then I had to solder the cables back onto the 160W board with almost quarter of a stick core of soldering per terminal. It's really tedious and needs to be done fast or else the solder will cool down and potentially crack in place if reheated for adjustment again.

I have a few questions on the 120W supply:

    Whats the DC output voltage
What is the size of the plug into the laptop (eg.. 2.5mm ID, 5.5mm OD)
Is the ring the + terminal, sleeve the -

$70 shipped is cheaper than buying a spare 120W.

    It is used but still....

SS, if I buy the http://www.pchub.com/uph/laptop/46-41999-6603/Li-Shin-0226A20160-AC-Power-Adapter.html, and seeing as I live in Europe shipping isn't much of a problem (shipping on the Clevo will be in the upper 200 bucks anyways, so.. What's an added 15?)

Will I have to mod the laptop in any way? or is it just like swapping powerbricks? (a bit confused with the terminology, as in a desktop the PSU is inside the case, but from what I understand you refer to the pSU as the powerbrick thingy, right?) ;) That is, strictly external.

The 160W PSU in the link is a straight swap. It's ready to go when you're ready to go. The ACPI is not going to order the notebook to draw more power than it can handle. In other words, you're just increasing the reserve power pool that is available for the notebook to draw.

Who said a PSU has to be inside of a desktop case? I know some people, including myself, that have built hobo builds with the PSU left externally, mainly for cable management. The PSU is a "power supply unit." It bears no reference to where it should be placed on any machine.

It does but Sagers have along track recorded of not having to use it.

I write 1 paper a week minimum and design webpages and learning my Cisco network operating systems class I can't be with my main computer.

It needs to be ready all the time. I can't be disorganized.

I think I'm giving the Asus a chance but I really want the clevo

When will Sager allow us to pick the 5870 with the w870?

As of right now they only offer the 280/285. (can't remember which)

Sounds like you're getting the clevo.

You can get the clevo through RJTech. Hopefully the rest of the resellers start next week.

I'm in the same situation as you.

I need a system at all times for school - my classes are 90% online.

The W870 has been around and parts are plentiful - the G73 might take weeks to get fixed or replaced.

    I can't risk it....

Randomness. The nice thing about this notebook is the primary HDD bay is underneath the battery. We can simply remove the battery and prop the notebook up with a bottlecap and rig a desktop hard drive to it with a SATA ribbon and have it powered by an external source.

Do 3.5" SATA drives need more power than 2.5" ones?

    I wish.

They said it should ship tomorrow. lol

Means I'd get it Thursday :( RJTech's shipping was WAY overpriced. I stuck with the free stuff and I'll just have to have, what's that called again? Oh yeah, patience :D

It does come with a driver disc, yes. But it's always a good practice to download the latest drivers from each component manufacturer's site because even some of the drivers in Sager's or Clevo's website are outdated.

Certain things I will already have updates on, like GPU and chipset.

Other stuff that isn't important to me to have the latest would be webcam, card reader, etc. so it's just easier to install those from disk.

    Soviet,

The purchase configuration options for the Clevo 870CU at RJTech now shows the AC Adapter as a "100-240V Auto Switch AC Adapter." Does this eliminate the need for further discussions regarding adequate power?

    Thanks.
