Has anyone yet tried This New Driver yet?

ATI Catalyst 10.3a Notebook Graphics Download Link:

    64-bit Windows 7/Vista

Check out what AMD's marketing department said about these new drivers.

This ATI Catalyst™ driver update will unlock new performance improvements on top of the already previewed features in the initial Catalyst™ 10.3 Preview driver we sampled you in February. This driver will be available to download on March 17th from undgerground.amd.com and it will be called "Catalyst 10.3a Preview". On March 24th we will post the official Catalyst™ 10.3 WHQL certified on amd.com. The difference between the two is that Catalyst™ 10.3a Preview will contain future Eyefinty 6 updates and an Alien vs. Predator optimization which the Catalyst™ 10.3 WHQL posting does not have.

This is my first gaming laptop :D ,

Am I reading the temps from hw32 correctly? GPU thermal diode at 95 and GPU MemIO at 95 degrees, both were max temp. From about 30 min of BFBC2 (on high setting)

Not done any pasting, when I purchased the laptop I did ask for paste to be applied - arctic 5. Your temps are way lower then mine you using a cooler ?

I just got my 8760 today and am trying to look at temps, but this is what I get:

The video card won't register. The very first time I tried it it did, but the temps would not change either Is this normal, am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you run the newest 10.3 ATI drivers you can monitor the core temp in HWmonitor or you can also use AMD GPU tool(you will need the AMD GPU tool that can read the 5870 so you should google it) to monitor them as well...

HWinfo has been buggy at times reading the temps where sometimes it will and sometimes it wont but usually restarting the App got them to read it....

Nope you will not void the warranty by redoing the paste....

There are plenty of videos out there on applying paste but like i said make sure you keep pressure on the GPU heatsink while bolting it down as thats the real trick especially with this model ... I had to do mine a few times till i was happy and i have done to many paste jobs to even count...

Good luck though and you can always just ask for help if you get stuck...

Just ran my second run and got more on 3DMark but a few points lower on Vantage. Oh well maybe the new drivers just installed (10.3a) are not the best after all...

if any one cares this is a batch file that will add a new power scheme disabling the FN+F4 that puts the computer to sleep. I had a request to fix it and this is my method.

It can be annoying when you are playing a game and hit the wrong button

Did you get your Clevo from Taiwan? It's much closer to me, and is therefore a better option. If you know any resellers carrying the W860CU or W870CU you'd be helping me a great deal by giving me any info. :D :D Thanks!

Sorry to excite you guys, but I bought mine in December via Malibal in Las Vegas. I actually bought an ES 920xm earlier this week and it arrived yesterday from Taiwan. Was pretty anxious about installing it considering I had never removed/installed a processor before, but so far so good.

Not surprisingly, the factory paste job was messy (though my temps were always fine). I previously bought some IC Diamond in the event the factory job was bad, so my new 920 already had its bonding partner set. Heard that it is hard to work with, so I did the warm water trick. Wow, it was still very hard to work with. There's no way you can just put a drop of that onto a processor. More like you have to twirl around a diarrhea-like stream into something that resembles a circle. Didn't like my first attempt (too much), so I cleaned it up and put the ICD7 back into a plastic bag and warm water. Still was a to apply, but I liked the amount I applied better. Next problem was going to be getting level pressure as I wanted the heatsink and anyone that has fiddled with these heatsinks probably knows you have to fiddle with them a bit before they will fit snuggly. Practice probably makes perfect. All I can say is that I did my best. lol

Fired my machine up and temps are looking fine as far as I can tell. All 4 cores idle from 40-45 *C. Haven't done any stress tests and don't really plan on it. Have to believe that I got my hands on a perfectly fine ES/QS 920xm and I'm a happy camper because of that.

Any i7 can run within the 40-50*C range. Idle temps tell nothing about the quality of the chip. The only way you can find out is to stress it, which you aren't willing to do.

I had a chance of getting a 920 ES cheap, but I decided to pass it up. Haven't read a lot about it so I wasn't willing to take that risk. :p

Okay, okay. What should I run? Just did a default run of IntelBurnTest (5x at standard stress). High temps ranged from 71-73.

    Much needed RANT!

So it’s Friday evening, I got off work early today cause we are supposed to get up to a foot of snow tonight here in Denver. It’s practically a blizzard outside right now. My wife is out of town till Monday visiting relatives.

Perfect weekend to puter it up right!

    WRONG!

I got caught up in the backorder of 8760’s. The reseller was hoping and trying to get it to me by today, but it’s no go. My only consolation is that shiny new 160W power supply that I ordered is purring along running my ASUS G1.

    How exciting is that? :(

At least you have the Asus. :)

As for ES samples, somewhere along the line I stopped using them and only use OEMs. I have a few 920XM OEMs and I could have gotten an ES or two instead but the price was good enough I stuck with the OEM variants.

    Electrosoft,

I was seriously looking at the 1727, I liked the size, screen res, better sound system, but in the end decided to go the 8760 route. When I found out about my back-order I looked again at it. I was very tempted to buy your barebone and the 920 you have. With the Bing cash back it would have been a great deal. The next day Bing was gone and after thinking about some more decided to stay with the 8760. The savings even without bing would have been pretty big. The decider for me is the nicer screen, better keyboard and the ability to have a second drive built in. Also If for some reason I need to sell it, I would have an easier time trying to get rid of. Good luck on your sale there, it's is a great deal.

Has anyone had this happen to them?
I was playing total war:napoleon on the laptop with earphones, then a lightning storm hits and lightning struck about 150 feet to my house. The next thing I know was a spark came from the earphone and I felt it near my ear
My wife later told me that she see saw a flash of light coming from my general area...

I have a surge protector on the power brick, nothing wrong with the laptop.

In the realtek sound configuration, am I suppose to select stereo, quadrophonic, or 5.1 speakers for the default sound card?

I read theres 4 speakers, so am I right in thinking max sound channels supported is 4? (Trying to properly configure powerdvd audio settings)
