You'd take a monochrome display and be happy. At least it seems to have acceptable viewing angles.

well it is small enough to see the differences yeah ? no ?

keep it coming guys.

Hi guys,
I am new here and am trying to decide between the NP8760 (W870CU) or the NP9280 (D900F).
My question is simple...which is faster: the NP8760 with the i7-920XM (overclocked to 3.7GHz) or the D900F with the i7 quad 920 (2.66GHz) at stock speeds? Also, will I be able to overclock the 920 on the D900F?
Portability is not a concern for me. I just want the fastest laptop I can get with the budget I have. What would you guys recommend? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The 920 at stock is faster than the 920XM overclocked.
-
Wow, that was quick. Thanks for the response.
So the 920 is faster on single, dual and quad core intensive apps vs the 920XM oced to 3.7GHz?
Also, I see that the 8760 has the option for 1333MHz dual-channel memory, while with my configuration for the 9280, I will only get 1066MHz but triple-channel. How does this comparison fare with regards to speed? -
For a slightly more in-depth answer:
i7-920 maximum speeds with Turbo-Boost (4/3/2/1 cores) - (2.8/2.8/2.8/2.93)
i7-920XM maximum speeds with Turbo-Boost - (2.26/2.26/3.0/3.2)
If you toss in the BIOS overclocking on the W870CU, you can possibly add about .5 GHz to those numbers, however Turbo-Boost and overclocking often don't play together well due to heat issues, so if you're running 3 or 4 cores, you're unlikely to get it up over probably 2.5 GHz or so.
Thus, as you can see, the desktop 920 will be faster whenever 3 or 4 cores are running, only losing out when we drop down to one or 2 cores. It's also worth noting that we're comparing the lowest end desktop chip (release price $284) with the highest end laptop chip (release price $1054).
Considering that on XOTIC's site, configuring the NP8760 with a 920XM is a $745 upgrade, compared to a $300 difference in base configurations, you could upgrade the 9280 to an i7-950 (3.2/3.2/3.2/3.33) and come out both cheaper and ahead of the NP8760 in everything but single core speed (assuming everything else as base configuration). -
In notebookcheck review of W870CU has CPU reached 80C - what is thermal spec of mobile Core i7 architecture guys? Nehalem is underclocking when hits 90C
They noticed instability of system once CPU got 80C - maybe shutdonws were caused by BIOS or something else. -
[what is thermal spec of mobile Core i7 architecture guys? ]
From what I've read, it's 100C.
Here's an example stating that, though I have nothing to confirm that this is direct from Intel
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_...7-720QM BY80607002907AH (BX80607I7720QM).html
Also, keep in mind most review systems are "test" systems, and not the production systems that normally ship. I've been researching the W860CU and W870CU a long time, and I've never once heard any concern over CPU temperatures and stability. -
Ah, here we are, directly from Intel. While Tjunction is not the same as maximum operating temperature, for our uses I think it's a valid measurement.

Hello associates, it is some time ago I turned on a theme be more than enough one problems with my Notebook CM570TU Clevo, when 32bits to execute games in Windows XP they produced themselves, when game during half hour or to hour makes me feel failures like coming out several colors on screen and looking badly graphics sometimes the message of nv4 appears to disp to me but to few deceive overcoat burn it it happens I have is the bad graphics with colors that almost game is seen.
Because my notebook send the salesman and this told me that a problem was coming from the memoirs and the operating system, the subject the fact is that my team for new other has substituted me and I have elected the Clevo W870CU with the following configuration:
Notebook GWAR WARBOOK CM870CU Series
Intel Core i7-720QM ( 45nm, 6MB, 1.60GHz )
4096MB ( 4GB ) DDR3 1066Mhz ( 2x2GB ) Kingston HyperX
500GB ( 7200rpm ) Hard Disk SATA
nVidia Geforce GTX 280M 1024MB DDR3
17,3 " Full HD LED Display Glare ( 1920 x 1080 )
Intel 5300AGN Wireless
i7-820QM was preferring the processing Core ( 45nm, 8MB, 1.73GHz ) but they were not having it available and I was not wanting to wait but time, thank you very much for turning on the W870CU's this theme has helped to me to make a decision and to see it although this notebook yields W870CU.
On Monday coming I will have my new notebook right now I will tell you as the Core yield i7-720QM.
Greetings. -
Thanks for the further clarification.
With regards to the memory speed the desktop i7-920 can take, I am quite confused. This site:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html
says max FSB for all desktop i7s are 1333MHz. However, ark.intel.com shows the max memory speed to be 1066MHz for all i7 desktop chips. Then finally, xoticpc tells me the max memory speed is 1066MHz for the desktop i7-920 and i7-950, but 1333MHz for the i7-975!
Which one of these is correct??? -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
i7-mobile (720, 820, 920) = 1333 x 2 channels
i7-desktop-non extreme (920, 940, 950) (QPI 4.8) = 1066 x 3 channels
i7-desktop-extreme (965, 975) (QPI 6.4) = 1333 x 3 channels -

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Welp, my previous notebook's video output just died, so if I can't fix that somehow looks like I'm buying a new notebook. The NP8760 is really appealing, but I had a few questions:
- For anyone who previously used a 1920x1200 notebook, how noticeable is the lost screen real estate? I'm leery of downgrading my screen resolution, even if the color/contrast is better.
- Does it have a volume dial or button anywhere? How well does it work?
- The pictures make it look like there's a little flip-panel on the back where the DC power plugs in. I use my laptop plugged-in almost all the time and having a little door flapping around in the back that I have to open and close all the time seems annoying. Is this how it works?
- I assume the keyboard isn't backlit...correct? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The loss in real estate is really not that big. I used to be a crusader against 16:9, but after seeing quite of a few of them lately in different sizes and resolutions, it's not too bad.
The volume control is Fn + F3 for mute, Fn + F5 for decrease volume, and Fn + F6 for increase volume. It's a lot easier than the older Clevo notebooks as the volume control keys used to be Fn + F5, Fn + F11, and Fn + F12. It's difficult to adjust volume with one hand with that placement unless you have really big hands or long fingers, haha.
Yes, that's pretty much how it works. Get used to it.
Correct. The keyboard is not backlid. The screen itself should be your keyboard backlight. This is just my own philosophy on backlid keyboards, so don't take it personally as I am not directing this towards you. I think that the ancient art of "touch typing" is slowly dwindling with the rise of backlit keyboards. Users are becoming more dependent on looking at the keys they are pressing rather than looking at the screen. In my opinion, backlit keyboards add a lot of cheese to the notebook and are nothing more than a waste of battery and money. To put in bluntly, it looks gay. And I know what gay looks like as I live in the heart of San Francisco and attend a university that is vastly dominated by Macbook elitist hipsters. The only way that one can learn how to touch type is to play intense FPS games where the pressure on the battlefield requires you to type quickly without looking away. You will love the new keyboard design on the W870CU, ccarollo. -
Thanks for your quick response.
Is there no hardware volume control? No dial or dedicated buttons or anything? Ugh.
Can you just snap that door off?
As far as the keyboard goes, I'm perfectly capable of touch typing and do so for the vast majority of what I type, thank you very much. But in a very dark room, when hitting unusual combinations or number/F-keys, it's often useful to be able to glance down and center your fingers, and no screen I've ever used has been bright enough to illuminate the keyboard that well. I personally find it a nice addition (and as an aside, you calling it 'gay' just makes me want disregard everything else you say about it -- slurs aren't very persuasive to me).
It's hard for me to get excited about spending a couple thousand dollars on something that would be a downgrade in more than a couple ways. Guess I need to think about it more. -
-
Just use your phone's light to search for the buttons at night. Or attach one of those pen lights to the side of the display with velcro at night and use it whenever you need lol. Backlight keyboards are nice, I like them too, but it's not a make or break feature.

Well my current laptop's deader than a doornail, so, followup question: Anyone know what Sager's turnaround time on these notebooks are? Say, if I ordered tomorrow, how soon could I expect one, ballpark?
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
-
Wonder if that still applies to Clevo resellers? -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
-
Yeah, most of the shipments seem to come out of the same place in CA, I just wonder if Clevo resellers and Sager resellers are stuck in the same back-order situation. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
You can always get one from RJTech. They have a nice fresh batch of W870CU's sitting around waiting to be shipped to their new home.
-
Yeah, I'd consider it if they were price competitive, but it's ~$40 more thanks to their up-charge on the WiFi card. I can see how for some situations they could work out well, and they've got their niche.
-
Oooh, I'll be giving them a call monday morning, since I can actually get it without a hard drives and OS, which I don't need because I can salvage those from the remains of my old machine.
Thanks for the tip! -
This pricing discrepancy comes about because RJTech charges for the WiFi card (~$40) whereas the resellers include it in the price. -
Hm yeah Satori's actually slightly cheaper even WITH a 250GB drive (which I don't really need since I alrernady have a 120GB SSD and a 320GB 7200rpm drive in my dead laptop). Plus their return service isn't as draconic.
And I could always pick up one of those enclosures and have a nice small portable 250GB external drive...I'm liking the sound of this.... -
Just placed an order with Malibal, should have it mid-next week. Thanks again for the help!
-
Nice! I enjoyed working with them, very nice people at Malibal. I'm expecting a W860CU I ordered from them on Wed, and I'll be ordering my W870CU from them in December.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Why are you getting two notebooks?
-
I prefer to carry as little as possible when traveling. The 8690 will stay in one location, and the W870CU will be my primary. I store anything I need on a flash drive, and bring it with me between locations. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Okay, I will reserve my judgment on how you spend your money.
-
-
Man Brandonsi, share the wealth you Big Baller! I was barely able to squeezed enough money for one and you got two of hottest laptops coming? Man, how I envy you. Just make sure you do a comparison review between the two when you get them.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
SUADE8880, has your GPU burnt to a crisp yet?
-
Sadly, the 860CU will be in the remote location when the 870CU arrives, so I won't be able to do a true side-by-side comparison, but I plan on reviewing and taking photos of both. -
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I don't smell anything.
-
Don't delete my cookies.

-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yeah, they were some pretty tasty cookies. Lucky me, I had a share of the last batch.
-
damn you both!
-
Any benches on the RAID in this baby? Either going to drop my OCZ vertex 120 and a 320 into it or a 320x2 RAID. I needs me some benchies please? Links to existing info is totally acceptable or peeps going to work since none exist is also appreciated
Cheers fellas!
-
Just put an order in for a Malibal "Satori". I'm Jessie Spano-excited!
-
Hey there Jeff! Glad to see you made the right call!
Looking forward to you sharing your impressions when it arrives!
