I suppose your motherboard could be having a problem... I remember a low-end laptop I had which used to keep blanking out and restarting whenever the embedded graphics tried to turn itself on. A mobo is only as strong as its weakest link... although... for a mobo failure to prompt a restart I'd guess (this is just guesswork and I'm not an expert so don't trust me too much) it could be a problem with the main power supply capacitor/aka proadlizer. I doubt this would happen on a high-end system though... probably something to do with your config.
Here's a bit of general advice:
Look under the "Hardware" tab in the program System information for Windows. Should give you a little bit of info about power consumption of the GPU and CPU... not totally sure since I've never had an actual GPU to look up b4...
Buy SIW Pro or Download SIW Freeware
webpage for the program.... just scroll down the page in this link a bit and find a section that says "freeware builds". This program is THE BEST... CPU-Z + a ton of extras.

The "black screen of death" usually associated with insufficient power. Power supply protection must have kicked in when it detect high load. You can try underclock your HD6970 until you get higher wattage power supply.
-
thx a lot for quick respons, and I think I know the problem, yes u right seems like it need more power, because when I try to undervolt+underclock everything goes smooth
so I need a 180watt power supply ASAP
-
cheers man that worked. Shame I need to replace the screen though, it has a pressure mark on it, can see it when it's booting and when I close the lid, I hate things like that, theres also a small scratch near the bottom of the screen too. shame one cannot buy anything in perfect condition anymore, apart from the that, it's probably the best laptop i've owned sofar.
the perils of buying online i suppose. -
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Yeah indeed. I bought a new screen and they not only sent the wrong model (only reso was correct) but also found 3 pixels are dead.
Unfortunately moving to Japan means I am stuck with it until I can afford a sager/clevo P150HM AUO V4/V7 screen directly! A bit of a waste. Machine is starting to get a little costly with the previous motherboard repair and now GPU...
With all repair costs and replacement parts now spent nearly a grand! I intend to get a Samsung 470 soon before I install windows again if the 6990M works so that will be another 220 quid added lol! -
do u know what HDD bracket that fit to w860cu? replacing ODD to an HDD.
Maybe u can give an Ebay link to that bracket
thanks -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
Any standard 12.7mm caddy will work. Just make sure you get a SATA model
-
Ok thanks a lot
...
ooh one more thing, when I have replaced my ODD to an HDD can I setup a RAID mode with those two HDD? -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
You can probably do software RAID through your OS, but I don't believe this model has hardware RAID support. (Someone feel free to correct me if that's wrong
)

Why does Speccy show that there are 4 RAM slots? Is this some sort of malfunction with the program? If anyone is willing to test for themselves,a link to Speccy is here : Download Speccy 1.14.288 - FileHippo.com
Thnx in advance. -
w860cu that I owned have only 2 slot RAM...that's for sure
-
does anybody have the motherboard schematics for this laptop? I found it on a site ... but it costs money and i'm not willing to part with my dough.
-
The schematics is available for free either directly from Clevo, or from this lounge. Look at the lounge resources.

You are right
There is no variant of W860 with hardware RAID.
The W860CU has no recent, official BIOS with software RAID. It is, however, possible to use the W870CU BIOS, which has this functionality.
For those wishing a software RAID setup:
What you gain with the Intel Matrix is the possibility to run a dual HDD mirrored system and striped data. Performance is good with the setup, but nowhere near what you can achieve with even mediocre single SSD setup. Back-ups are still, as they always have been, necessary.

Hi guys,
I have a small question. I am planning to upgrade my CPU i7 qm820 to a 920xm. The problem is, that I cannot find a german power supply for my notebook. What do I need exacly? 19V output or 20V output. Are 180W enough?
btw: My notebook is a MySN XMG6 (W860CU) with USB 2.0 and HD5870.
Would be nice if someone could post a link to a shop in Germany.
Thanks

This 180W power supply is currently for sale in the marketplace. I use it and it works fantastically.

Contact the seller asap. He is in the UK but will ship to Germany.. Also Being in the EU means no import tax or customs charges whatsoever.
Use tip 1 for perfect compatibility but hurry before someone else gets it. -
Thanks for the reply, but I am looking for a german version (with tips).

German version? You mean the plug? Just use any power cable that all external monitors, printers and desktop computers use. You will most definitely have one lying around the house. I have many from over the years... the power supply uses the same common three pin connector that all these appliances use.
http://www.alinecable.com/appliance-connector/484205.html like this plug
Just swap the power cable when you get it and you are good to go. The power supply will come packaged with the power plug end unplugged anyway to make it easier to pack so you can just throw away the english power cable, use a english to german plug adaptor or use a german power cable.
Other than this I am afraid you won't find a special german version. Just to confirm with you I have used this very adaptor in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Japan.. -
ok, i didn`t know that works by swapping the cable. I contacted pras to sell me the power supply. Thanks KoI
btw: How far is your HD 6990 upgrade?
Arne -
finally got a new screen out of the seller I bought my laptop from, well actually, a partial refund to purchase a new screen from here in the UK.
can't believe how dumb the seller was, they shouldn't be selling laptops if they don't know much.
anyway to my question, can someone tell me the latest bios & ec versions?
mine is;
1.00.18EU4
EC 1.00.11
i have pretty much no advanced bios settings either, i've also been reading 1.01.05 is the latest, but on the clevo bios thread it's listed as 2009 release, but 1.00.18 is listed as 2010 release, eh?
also my bios sus Unknown under VGA Card, is that normal? because it shows up fine in windows 7. bios revision says 77404 as well in the bios, anything later than that? be nice if it said 6970 in the bios.
ok, back to installing all my stuff. -
edit: never mind, found the answer in the thread

Hi Everybody. I have a big issue with my laptop.
Sager NP8690| Intel 720QM | 1920x1080 | 4GB 1333mhz 320GB | Mobility HD5870 | Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
I noticed from time to time after long hours of playing video games, my games (Blur and Fifa10) crash in the middle of the play which quit the game to show the desktop. Then only twice at different interval windows 7 64 bit reported problem about the graphic card driver. FYI, I have all latest firmware and latest drivers.
The last game crash (Fifa10) dated last friday. I then decided to shutdown the PC and go to sleep. The next day I decided to open the laptop to see if there was any dust in the heatsinks where the fans were located. Finally there was only a little dust. I decided to check the paste on the video card by removing the GPU heatsink and then put it back as it was. I put back the fans back as well. I didn't touch/unscrew the CPU heatsink but only the GPU one.
To my surprise, when I switched on the laptop, the laptop turned off after 10seconds after boot up. It turns off before I could get in windows. Sometimes I have time to enter the bios but it turned off while looking at the configuration. It's the same behavior whether on battery, AC (Without battery) or battery on charge. The laptop even charges the battery.
To my experience, usually it's the processor which is overheating which causes this behavior. I checked the fan and saw that when turning on the laptop, only the GPU fan runs. Then after 5 seconds, the CPU fan turned on, then laptop off. I repeated the same procedure the CPU fan now remains off but the GPU fan is fully functional. I switched the fans to see if it was the CPU who was damaged but to my great surprise, the CPU fan ran when put in the place of GPU fan. This means that both fans are in good conditions.
I decided to reset the BIOS today by removing the CMOS battery and putting it back after 15mins. This was not an easy task when looking at the CMOS battery location. I seized also the opportunity to check the heatsink of the CPU and noticed nothing unusual except an excessive paste which dried on the electronic circuit of the CPU.
After reseating both heatsinks, memory modules and the graphic modules and the fans, I see the same problem which I had in the beginning, it turns off around 10seconds. I even replaced the CPU fan with the GPU one.
My questions are as below:
1) A graphic card oerheating can turn off the computer like above?
2) Is it normal that when turning the laptop on, the CPU fan is off? To my experience, it should always remain and never off but at reduced speed when not in use.
3) How could it be that at random the CPU fan switches on when turning the Laptop on?
4) What could cause this behavior?
I tried to remove the memory module and turn the laptop on. It remains on for 20seconds but the CPU fan not! I switched it off immediately after so as to prevent excess heat from damaging my processor.
I couldn't understand what have caused this as what I have been doing when cleaning dust, a kid could have done same. I couldn't understand why the fan did not start at the same time as the GPU fan. It seems like the mobo is not supplying electricity to the CPU fan. I thought it could be a problem of paste which should be re-applied but why the CPU fan not running at the same speed and time as the GPU fan?
I'm very worried as I won't have money to purchase another laptop or to send it to you.I'm based in Mauritius. It would cost too much for me. This laptop cost me 5months my net salary. I saved money during one year to buy this laptop. Furthermore all my work is on the laptop and I'm unable to use it.
Thanks to provide a feedback to save my life
-
I am not sure whether thermal pads and paste can be reused after you removed the heatsinks. Maybe you should take off the take off the heatsinks again and clean everything and apply new theral pads and paste.
Otherwise I cannot help you any further. Good luck anyway. -
1). I have same question about that too, but my VGA has been upgraded to the HD6970M, even I already use 180watt AC Adapter...dont know why?
2). Yes that normal, my laptop act like that
3) dunno
4) dunno
Maybe I know about my blank screen problem, it goes blank whenever GPU Temp reach 80 C, My heatsink is from my older GTX285M and WITHOUT ANY MOD, maybe that's my problem, maybe the core is not well handle with heatsink surface...All still "MAYBE" since I almost give up
well tonight I will try to cut it using hacksaw like from this TUTORIAL
Wish me luck guys -

Well peeps my 6990M arrived today and it works plug n play just like the 6970M. Unfortunately I still have exactly the same problem and can't boot out of safe mode. I also forced sound in safe mode and it still works too so I am pretty sure my 920xm isn't working as it should...
does anyone have the latest bios that allows 920xm control through bios. I want to disable everything and see if the windows boots normally. If it does then cpu is faulty and I will know a replacement will sort things out. Luckily chip still has 2 weeks warranty left....! -
Try the bios fron the mysn.de site. I think its the lastes, whether is supports full options of 9xx xm I do not know. The mysn XMG6 is the W860CU. Search under Support...
Hope I could help
Arne
P.S. Can you write a few lines what you had to change to make the 6990 fit into your notebook? I thinking of doing the same but I am not sure whether my 5870 heatsink would work. -
FYI:
I found a german reseller that sells power supplies with 180 W. I bought the following one:
Netzteil 20V 9,5A Alienware Aurora m9700, 63,43 €
AC input: U=100-240 V; I~2,5 A
DC output: U=19V; I=9,47 A
German plug is included.
It works fine for just 67,18 € (incl. p&p). -
I looked for the bios on there but it's not there.
-
Look here:
mySN.de | XMG XIRIOS XESIA | buy Schenker Notebooks
--> Support
--> Treiberdownload
--> XMG
--> XMG6
--> BIOS
There you will find two *.zip-files. One is the Bios the other the EC.
Both come with a flash-program so you will need a bootable usb-stick, CD or DVD. Boot with the device and run the update.bat to flash the bios.
Hope you can understand my english because I am from Germany.

5870M heatsink works just fine. I have one of these. Installing the new card I saw that the previous owner had just ground away in certain areas to make room for a couple of chips. Modifications are pretty small. I didn't think to take photos
Unfortunately until I can get my problems sorted (hopefully CPU related) no further things can be done. Good thing is the card works fine. The card is a Dell OEM black 6990M.
Also thanks to the GPU not being the problem I now have a spare 6970M lol. Once I have sorted things out I will put it up for sale. Obviously you guys are very welcome to it
-
I have a temperature problem with my GPU HD6970M, idle Temp is about 59-63 C !!! everytime I try to play a game or benchmarking the screen goes blank after 4-6 minutes, the last temp before it goes blank (using CPUID HWMonitor) show me 80 C.
I use my GTX285M heatsink without any mod (no cutting, since I cant cut it by myself), is there a good change if I use/buy HD6970M heatsink from eurocom can solve my problem?
here is my temperature when idle (so, scary) :
if new heatsink will make a big difference, then I will buy it ASAP....please need advise from u guys, I'm really desperate here
Thanks -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Since you have a different heatsink on there I'm gonna guess you put it on yourself. Try to do a repaste with better thermal compound. IC Diamond if you have it, anything else you have sitting around will work too until you can get some. Make sure all your fans, vents, and heatsinks are dust free as well. Get a can of compress air and blow them out real good.
-
thanks a lot for your reply, but I have clean it and re-paste, several time, using Arctic cooling MX-4, I'm so, so have lost any idea here
I even try to undervolt it and mod my FAN speed using RBE and flash it using ATI winflash....nothing work -
Change Arctic MX-4 to something else. I use MX-4 before & my temps also look scary.
-
So what do u suggest? is Shin-etsu x23 7783 good? or maybe something else?
-
Anything other than MX-4. I only have use MX-4 & Shin-Etsu G751. The latter works great for me. G751 is the weakest Shin-Etsu. So, X23 should be OK I think.
-
Isn't there a chance you might have to unlock some part of the laptop to tell it to run with such high wattages? I don't know about the 6970M laptop, but yours could definitely need some extra drivers or something.. I'm really unsure as to how BIOS works this is just my inner noob speaking right here.

Ah I really wish I had taken a pic of my 6990M with heatsink and thermal pad placement (I just copied the exact placement as on the 6970M. I haven't been able to check temps as only have safe mode functionality until I get new CPU but should be fine as the heatsink fits perfectly.
I belive the one I have is the 5870M heatsink and it has been modified underneath in two areas. First modification is to make room for the long thin chip toward the bottom right of the card (while card in is machine) this chip in just underneath the row of three bigger square chips. The previous owner simply ground the copper away underneath to leave a neat valley allowing the thinner chip to fit nicely. The other modifcations seems to be along one set of VRAM modules where again some copper has been ground away.
I really hate taking GPUs apart so I am afraid unless I find my temps out of control I won't be taking it apart again just to take pics.
@jpeeves this problem was exactly the same with the 6970M installed. I mistakenly thought the 6970M was the culprit and got a 6990M only to find the problem still exists. Feel very silly and considerably poorer. At least the 6970 will go for a good $300 still. -
You definitely need to either modify your heatsink or buy one that has already been modified. Your main problem is not the thermal paste, but the fact that the heatsink is not making proper contact with the die. replacing the thermal paste will not do you any good until there is proper contact.
When applying thermal paste I foun that "more was more" (the die is quite big) and that it was necessary to place the paste towards the part of the die that "points" to the front of the notebook (hope that made some sense), so that that the paste will spread evenly.
But again, mod your heatsink or buy a modded one ASAP to see normal temps again.
On a different note:
Does anyone know where I can buy a new VGA-Box? Or does anyone have one spare?
-
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Why do you need a vga box. Mine doesn't have one and I think the reason is the 6970 won't fit inside?
-
I just found a newer Bios than the one I refered to in my quote. I found a 18s version. I dowloaded it at sager homepage. In the advanced chipset menu you can turn off Hyper Threadind and other CPU features. I just flshed my Bios and it works fine (no difference recogniced at my system). I try to turn off HT and windows task manager shows just 4 CPU
.
-
Ok then, it all makes sense, coz when I apply the thermal paste to the gpu die I saw it not proper stick to the heatsink surface
VGA box you can try to buy it from eurocom, you can try contact the marketing on the Ebay -
after much waiting, I finally installed my new screen this morning! .
-
ok I have done mod the heatsink but blank screen still happen, this time temperature is slightly tamed
here's my heatsink mod by my self :
it always about 5-6 minutes using 3DMark Vantage then goes blank screen, but hdd activity still there. Here is the log file until it goes blank screen and I have to turn off my laptop :
I try to play BF3 and the same condition happen, it goes blank maybe the same (around 5-6 minutes)
any idea? need help please....a big one
UPDATED :
Ok, maybe I have made some positive progress here, I try to undervolt it to the 0,96volt and it successfully run furmark for 11 Minutes !!! (before this I only can run furmark for about 2-3 minutes)....can I celebrate this? or I have to do more test?
here my Screenshot :
is that good news? -
Good job on the mod! The temps are definitely within acceptable range, and they shouldn't go as high while gaming
It is a very good idea to undervolt, and if this keeps your machine from black-screening while playing games, you should indeed celebrate. However, you temps could be better so here are a few tips:
- Make sure the heatsink and gpu die are making enough contact, and that there isn't any obstructions (other parts of the card interfereing with the heatsink.
- Experience with applying thermal paste. Try some different techniques. That is, if you have enough paste
- Last but not least, I would add some thermal pads to the back side of the card. I initially had the same problem with black screen while running furmark/BF3, but after adding thermal pads to the back of the card I never had this problem again.
Hope this helps! -
just flashed my system bios from the stock eurocom one to the sager 1.00.18s one with no probs.
does anyone know if the 6970m has any newer bios's available? -
I finally tried some games but they freeze after a few minutes, no black screen, the screen just freezes and the audio stutters until I switch off the machine.
Is this a common problem? -
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Yes put thermal pads on the 3 biggest chips on the back toward the bottom middle area of the card. Also does the heatsink now connect perfectly with the card?
With 0.96V you should be able to keep temps under 80C. I was able to... -
Thanks a lot for your support...but the bad news is i still cant get past 3dMark vantage it always the same, in the second test about almost 2 minutes running it goes blank.
Back of the card there are 4 chips, i just give 2 of them with thermal pad, can that be a problem? Since i dont have any thermal pad left
Dont know with real gaming experience,i'm afraid it will be the same with 3DMark vantage
-
Hey guys!
I'm having a bit of a problem here, maybe you guys could help me out.
I bought a 120hz Monitor (external) which comes with a Dual Link DVI cable, the thing is I'm not being able to put 120hz... only 60hz max.
I search for a bit, the graphic card should support DL-DVI but I found out that at least in the W870CU the DVI connector doesn't support DL...
Why the hell should Clevo put a single link in this?!?
Anyway, do you guys think I can solve this somehow? Is it possible to change the dvi adaptor on the laptop?
Cheers
