I am sure that it is listed in this thread some where but here goes anyway , what are the possible GPU upgrade paths for a W860CU currently with a GTX285M and do these upgrades require any more physical surgery than simply plugging in a replacement GPU

I'm new here in this forum so my question might sound noob... Anyways my 2yr-old sager's CPU/GPU temperatures have been idling around 65-70C, which I don't think is normal. Therefore, I'm thinking applying new thermal paste. My question is ... Do you guys recommend any thermal paste in particular? I never did it before, so I'm looking for ones that are easy to use (but good quality). And also where can I find a good tutorial (video) how to apply these thermal paste. Thx in advance.

Arctic Silver, IC Diamond 7, MX-4. Really the difference all the thermal pastes is very minimal. It's pretty simple for the W860CU, you remove the battery, all the screws for the main access door, boom you are right there. 4 screws for the heatsink screws, 4 for each fan, there are 2, one for your GPU and one for your CPU.

Have you also tried cleaning the dust out of the fans and heatsinks as well? That's usually a bigger culprit than the thermal paste on older machines.

Well I am being a bit silly and going to try an HD 7970M upgrade on my w860cu (original, no USB 3). Does anyone have any suggestions on a bios hack I may/may not be looking at to get the system to recognize it?

So with my current heatsink for the GTX 280M should I pick up an ATI 5870 heatsink to use with the 7970M? I don't mind hacking up my current one but if it's not going to work then I need to make the purchase...

There is no need to buy a different heatsink to modify. Hack up your 280m-heatsink and you should be fine.

I have tried both modified heatsinks by the way, and there is little to no difference.

I recently bought a clevo W860CU laptop and it came with a 1366x768 resolution lcd. I would like to upgrade it to a FHD (1920x1080) but not sure if its possible.

    Current LCD: LP156WH2(TL)(QB)

If it is possible, will the B156HW01 be a good replacement?

I recently bought a Sager NP8690(clevo W860CU) laptop and it came with a possibly dead 5870m , where can i get a cheap replacement? i have tried to see if it gets warm when the laptop turns on and it does, basically there no video on the monitor or the external the laptop turns on and i can hear beeps i can press the ctrl+alt+del and it would restart followed by 2 beeps but still no video. all the LEDs for the laptop work and light up so i think the mobo isnt dead what are the chances of doing a vbios flash blindly. is there any possible way someone can make an auto script for a usp drive for me so i can try to flash it and maybe will fix this problem.
    excuse my bad grammar please

i bought it for $250 and traded a GTS250 for it. i think it was a good deal, what do u guys think?
    specs are as followed:
    1080p screen
    4GB RAM
    dead 5870m
    i7-620m

I bought a 8690 Sager back in 2010 from PowerNotebooks.com. I have had no issues with the laptop until today. The laptop makes a really loud fan noise - can only be described as akin to a motor noise (that loud).

Anyone know what it could be? Also, does anyone know of anywhere where i can get a fan replacement, if indeed the fan is busted?

*Edit: HAving read a few posts, it seems like oiling the area around the fan may work. Since I'm not very savy with opening things up, could someone direct me to a (preferably step by step pictorial) guide on how to open the laptop up. Also, what type of oil should I be using? I want to try this before talking to customer service.

    hello everyone,

This is my first visit to this forum, surprisingly. Recently though ive been having a cpl issues with my 8690.... and could def use some help.

Whats happening now is, I believe, the cmos battery is dead. The reason I say believe is bcz I don't recall ever having to replace one, ever, maybe once, I have had to pull quite a few of them to reset bios on my desktop, but it always has charge and goes right back. I am slightly concerned with getting at the cmos battery in this laptop though, I remember seeing it fairly buried in the case.

Mainly right now what i need however, is the type, or part number, of this battery (for cmos). I have googled it several different ways and came up with nothing.

Anyone know this off hand, or have replaced one in this machine?

    thanks a lot,
    rlr

The CMOS battery is generally located underneath the keyboard and it should still be fairly easy to access.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with a part number for it.

So, I located the battery, got a new one, and replaced it. It has the exact same problem. BIOS does not keep time or date, every time laptop is unplugged (main battery is dead, def dead) it loses the time/date settings. I have reflashed the bios and EC, as well as now having replaced CMOS battery. Now I don't know what to do....

    Any help?

edit: Is it because main battery dead? I thought only needed CMOS battery to keep the time...

    ty,

Hi im having the same issue as you. I was about to change the battery but after reading your post i think is not a CMOS battery issue. I though it was any kind of virus...I will try to reinstall Windows to see if it helps...
    Which BIOS version is yours?

    I have 1.0.0.18 bios, and 1.0.0.11 ec

I do not believe is virus related. it is not happening in windows.

Do you have a good main battery?

    Im using same BIOS.
Yes my battery is still working, i think is not battery related.
Just to be sure this is what happens to my laptop. The clock will stop in this events:

Screen off (pc still on) time freezes
    sleep mode time freezes
    pc off same behavior.

Does it happens to you also runLonganrun? Its strange that even with laptop on but screen off time freezes.

I start to think this might be a Motherboard problem. I really hope not.

I just found out that my main Battery is also dead it only last about 5 minutes before it shuts out. Could it be that? I never saw time getting out of sync because of main battery...

One quick question to the owners, while in BIOS setting does the time still goes counting? or is frozen? I ask this because mine is frozen and i think before the seconds were counting.

runLoganrun I finally fixed our problem, i dont know what really fix it but i think is related to battery. I will tell you what the steps i did.

first if you go to BIOS settings the time is supposed to keep counting if not you still got the problem. I dont know if your main battery still can hold some charge mine was only holding about 5 mnts but after i take it out and putting on some times it made some kind of reset, cuz before battery would be 100% and drop to 0% in 5mnts now is way better. try to run only on batt until pc shuts dow then take battery off and turn it on without battery, go to bios then put battery on, reboot. Other thing i did was change in BIOS settings something related to Legacy OS I disable it. But what i think that really fix it was taking on and off the batt from pc.

Also make sure at some time the pc stays without the battery and take out the power cable as well.

Hope u can fix it ..Im really happy that is not a Motherboard problem.

    Hi,
thanks a bunch! I thought it may have to do with that. but the thing is the cmos battery should be keeping time regardless, afaik...

can anyone else chime in here? re: timekeeping... ty

that is the case with a desktop pc...
so battery could still be affecting it though I imagine.

so yours is keeping time now, but you still have spent main battery?

mine I did not notice freezing though, it may have been but I think I would have noticed... but everytime i unplug from outlet it loses time, or stops and resets again, so every time I turn on laptop just about I have to reset the time, it goes to 0:00 every time (it's unplugged)

    Hey guys.
I was wondering how the combination of the 6970m and 920xm is holding up? I see alot of you have had this setup for a while, so I want to get some experiences.

How long have you had it?
Do you overclock (CPU/GPU)? How high?
    Any bricks yet?

We know the w860cu has some problems with being pushed to hard on the CPU's so I thought it would be nice to get a status from some of you guys ;)

--> I do not own a 6790, but a 6990, and here are my answers:

How long have you had it?
--> GPU since march (I think) and CPU since january.

Do you overclock (CPU/GPU)? How high?
--> Yes, that is what they are made for. See my signature for values (CPU @ 64 W).

    Any bricks yet?
--> No, but if I set any value even a tiny bit higher I struggle with shut downs or bluescreens. I also do not use my battery because it is broken (it was broken before the updates)

We know the w860cu has some problems with being pushed to hard on the CPU's so I thought it would be nice to get a status from some of you guys ;)

--> It is a great notebook with plenty of power. I am happy with it now.

Could you do a Cinebench 11.5 benchmark on the cpu?
If its score is lower then 5 then your cpu is not working at 3.1 because 64w for 3.1ghz is too low, 70 for 2.66ghz is ok.

My desktop i7 920 needs 150w for 4.2 ghz and that cpu is the same as the i7 920xm (only different socket, transistor count is almost the same)

Here are my results (cinebench 11.5 64Bit)

CPU without hyper treading: 3,74 (lowest frequency at the end 2,8 Ghz)
CPU with hyper treading: 4,23 (lowest frequency at the end 2,6 GHz)
OpenGl wih HT: 56,2 (but only 60% GPU usage and it did used full speed (stayed at 715 Mhz), I cannot say why?!?)

When playing or using TS Bench I get higher clock-frequencies...

I hate benchmarks, you get a lot of numbers and a lot more to discuse about ;-)

    Hello forum members,

I am bumping my own post because at that time it maybe missed the attention of the experineced ones, or maybe somebody came across any experience with the phenomenon I wrote down about my system?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...0cu-np8690-owners-lounge-550.html#post8452971

Unfortunately I cannot use my machine at all.

Though since my previous post I brought the system to a notebook repair company, and they couldn't fix it either. They assumed that my 6970 was dead so they put another chip on it, but still no life sign. (They are professionals with changing BGA sloted chips and also have a pro equipment for it)

The phenomenon still exist, that I've got an ati4870, with it the system beeps and shuts down after a while. And i have a 6970 but with it the system does not give any life signs. Blank screen on switch on, although the leds are lit the fans spin etc.

What do you think is it possible that the 6970 is not giving any screen because the motherboard's bios is too old?

Could anyone give me any tip what to do with my system?

    Cheers and thanks in advance.

Yours does only get 4,23 points at 2,6? I think your cpu needs a higher wattage because my i7 920xm consumes around 65/72w at 2,6 and gets 4,60+ points.

(I have also tested 3,45ghz and then I get 5,48 points at 82W and that 5,48 points is the same as a stock i7 960 :D)

Howdy gang, I have been enjoying my 8690 for almost 2 years now, but have run into a little upgrade issue. I bought 2 4gb sticks of Samsung DDR3 10600 RAM to replace to 2 2gb stock sticks, but the computer will not boot with the new RAM. I get the BIOS startup page, then it goes to a windows repair error screen where it asks if I want Windows to attempt to fix the issue created by a software or hardware change, or if I want to boot the computer normally. Either choice reboots the computer and the process repeats itself. I have tried using both of the new RAM sticks and tried a all combinations of old and new. If I go into the BIOS menu, it shows the correct amount of memory. Putting the old RAM in works fine; the computer boots right up. Any ideas? Did I manage to get two bad sticks, or is there something I am doing wrong? It seems weird that the BIOS will detect and display the RAM properly, but Windows has a coniption fit. I am running W7 64bit.

Edit: I have again cross checked the specs and they both match in terms of speed, latency, etc. I booted memtest86+ and it launches for about 10 seconds, then the computer reboots and just keeps doing the process over and over again. I tried swapping the memory around in various configurations, and one configuration even led to the computer freeing on the BIOS start screen. Yikes! I guess it is either bad memory, or in some way incompatible even though the specs match?

I think you found the answer yourself already, either bad memory, or in some way incompatible. I upgraded from geil 2x4gb to corsair 2x8gb and worked fine.

Sorry for the question but the search function on this site still doesn't seem to work well. What is the max memory config you can run on the w860cu? Any issues with using one speed vs another?

16 GB is the maximum for this family of i7. This is bound to the memory controller (in the CPU assembly), not to the computer model.

Yep 16Gb is all you can get in these bad boys. Not that it should be an issue, unless you are trying to do a lot of virtualization.

Does anybody know where to get ahold of 8gb ram that is compatible with the W860CU? I'm wanting to have 2 x 8gb in there but a lot of sites are saying 8 is the max...?

    Thanks

Chaosstorm already upgraded to 2 x 8GB ram (one page back). Any 8GB module DDR3-1333 1.5V will work.

idk if that helpful... but i would love to get to the bottom of this prob...
it would seem the main battery should not be an issue, since the cmos battery works independantly from it, afaik...

    Any takers? totally stumped here...
feel free to pm, or whatever, don't care how, but id like to put this issue behind me...

    thanks again,
    rlr

edit: idk why yet, but pic not showing up...

but, message is: System CMOS checksum bad - default configuration used

    TY!!

    1) Did you check the CMOS battery with multimeter?

    2) Other than time & date, did other setting(s) change to default too?

Please try change anything other than time & date in BIOS, save & exit, boot into windows & shutdown. Power up, enter BIOS & check that setting whether it reset to default or not.

Hi... Ty very much! I did this test, and found that the other value that I changed (Enable Low Battery Alarm), reverted to default as well, back to Disabled state.
I have not tested the new battery on multi-meter. it does behave just like it did, prior to new battery. This machine travels a lot with me, so gets handled, but carefully, and it has not sustained any drops or impacts to speak of. I'm not very familiar with the eeprom chip it has, and if it could be involved...

see Here for boot error message...

    thank you,
    rlr

Hello, I don't know if anyone watch this thread anymore but just in case maybe someon can help me.

The other day I was playing League of Legends with my W860cu (not a really demanding game) and my screen froze with sound loop, I though it might be just a random crash from nvidia drivers. I had to restart and when I did windows didn't boot, it froze at the windows boot logo right after finishing loading. I though how weird, I tried safe mode and it worked. After messing a bit around I realised it was the graphic drivers which were causing the problem. So I reinstalled it.. formatted pc.. and still.. no luck, when i installed the drivers, windows won't start. Then I entered the bios and I realised it was full of strange artifacts. I tried to boot using Linux and random letters in the boot menu. So I guessed my GPU just broke for no reason. I openened to check how was it, if i could see any sign of burn or I don't know, something that might gave me a clue about what happened and then I saw the chipset of the graphic card with any or just so little thermal paste on it (but the vram memory blocks had a chunk of thermal pad each one(actually the heat sink had the chunks stuck on it but they just went on top of the memory blocks)). So now I'm looking for replacing my graphic card and hope I can use my laptop a bit more.

So I start looking on the internet and found some offers on ebay.co.uk. I saw this one NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M MXM 3.0 DDR5 1.5GB video VGA Card GTX 260M 460M upgrade | eBay. Which says it can upgrade my old and broke GTX 260M with a GTX 560m.

Is it possible? and has it be done before? if I end buying it, should i buy and put thermal paste on the chipset to avoid breaking it again?

    Thank's in advance.

Was anyone ever able to confirm the question proposed last December regarding a 580M in this chasis? Will it work at all, with dismal battery life, or just flat out not boot?
