The delay in spin of the of the CPU fan is normal in almost all CPU fans including CPU fans in desktop computers. -
This forum has 10s of thousands of membres, of course some got the 920
Also, most people won't vote as its assumed they got the 720qm, thats why there are more 820qm votes. The 920qm is quite uncommon, so most people will want to show it off -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I just voted 920XM because I have it sitting infront of me right now.
-
Mine idles between 46-49c. Even at 50c you shouldn't be worrying about.
-
I can see your view.
My CPU and GPU idle at 50, but I guess load temps are all that matter to me. -
Mine is shipping friday, arriving around monday or tuesday or wednesday
-
Soviet back on topic, when is your laptop expected to get in(whatever it is)

If my schedule is free, I will place my order soon. Right now I have a bunch of other things to deal with. And I just finished driving across the bay and back to get that damn CPU. -
Thanks CPJ!!
-
So you have a 920xm I know that much.
Btw how much did it end up costing you? (if you dont mind telling me)
Also, how much do you think the gtx3xxs' going to sell for? I'll pick one up if its under $500 -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
gantz got bantz Soviet Style.
$600.
I don't know how much the next generation of top shelf GPU's will sell for exactly. With pressure coming from ATi this time around, we can expect the prices for the Nvidia cards to be around $500 more or less. -
If you dont mind me asking how'd you get it for $400 cheaper than it costs per thousand units? Or is it a KBG connection
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
It's a one time connection. He owes me for something big back in the day so this is his return on the favor. That's pretty much all I'm allowed to say. The rest is going into legality. But the dope part was I got to handpick the chip myself, albeit a bit difficult to see through the AS packaging. Let's just say that I picked the right fortune cookie.
-
Kk soviet.
Ill probably pick up a gtx380 and a 920xm in 2 or 3 years
By then they'll be completly outdated
-
You're gonna keep the laptop that long? I change laptops as often as some people change their underwear. -
Im planning on keeping it 3-4 years.
My old laptop was around for 3-4 years. I cant afford changing laptops that often
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Personally, I don't think it's worth keeping the W860CU for that long. Yes, it's still a very competent notebook, but in two years you're already going to see USB 3.0, Ivy Bridge, and later on the mobile Fermi. Right now, I consider this period a short break as Clarksfield isn't that big of an improvement over ithe preceding C2Q, and we still have not left the now two year old G92. I know that people are going to throw the "waiting is pointless" speech at me, but really, this is all strategic planning for notebook enthusiasts, especially that we are now in an era where notebooks are outselling desktops and notebook technology is improving exponentially greater than ever before. I was originally going to wait until H1 2011 to replace my M570TU, but the exception to that was someone gave me an offer I could not refuse. However, my plans for replacing the notebook I will be picking up soon is still on track for H1 2011.
Some people just flip their underwear inside out and reuse them. -
Me too!!!!!!!!!

Dear Valued Customer,
We wanted to inform you that your order has been updated with the following status & additional information:
New status: Phase 2 (Sent for Custom Building / Testing / Burn In & Final QA) 3-7 Business Days -
Yea, but I can't afford another one in 2 years, and I need one now
-
What is Ivy Bridge??
-
I think its the next generation of CPU after sandy bridge.
I may end up selling my 8690, but I assume I'll be using it for a while. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Ivy Bridge is the 22nm shrink of Sandy Bridge. Sandy Bridge is the 32nm successor to Clarksfield. -

Then buy one now. In my opinion, GPU's nowadays are more aligned with the progression of console systems. We won't be seeing another major change in architecture until Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony release their next generation consoles. If you need a notebook, get the W860CU. The biggest factor that scares people away from buying a notebook is it's usability in the future. My M38AW still rocks many of the newer notebooks that people are toting along with them at my university. And this thing is four years old already. But the thing is, software isn't catching up as fast as hardware, so you're in a good position to buy a new notebook right now. A quad core will last you a very, very long time; even longer than my Pentium M has through the dual core era. The G92 is indeed aging, so I guess this is the only exception where you may consider waiting for a possible next mobile top shelf card in a few months. But remember that the G92 is still a very strong and very well proven card and all you have to do is pull back on the eye candy if things are getting a little too choppy for you on the battlefield. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Use it for as long as you wish until you feel the need, not the want, to move up. The W860CU is far ahead of the technology that the average user is using now. -
I posted a couple days ago and now typing on my new sager 8690 now.
Just reading posts from the last few days and seem to notice a few members seem to post almost hourly and offer bull and crap about nothing . You tend to offer little advice with little or no knowlage . Please you know who you are and dont post garbage as I'am tired of reading your useless . Dont take this personaly but you offer little advice worth reading other then to POST...
Iam just here to learn and you dont offer anything other then to make the reader SICK.

This is an owner's lounge. In NBR tradition, owners lounges are mini off topic threads, but are still lightly geared towards contributing information related to the notebook and helping those in need when needed. The OP in generally in charge of the thread and assumes responsibility of updating the first post with useful links and info, similar to an index if you will. But in short, owner's lounges are a mix of both work and play, but more on the play side. If you want to cry about users making making rubbish posts, then make a new thread to complain about it. But wait, that would be off topic now wouldn't it? I guess you just have to get with the program then. But alas, I have yet another brilliant idea. How about you PM all the people that you think are making useless posts so you can feel like you're making a change.
Wait again, look what I found. It seems that I have found a post that, by your inferred definition, is "garbage." It seems that we are in quite a predicament now. I wonder who the author is. My stars, it's you, baby. I am utterly speechless. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=2629440&postcount=6
With that said, how about we set aside all the finger pointing and kiss and make up? What do you say?

Whoa...
I know that just talking to everyone in this thread has helped me learn some, gave me something to do while WAITING for my NP8690, and hopefully I have helped others. I also know where to go and ask my questions once I get my laptop, and hopefully answer other peoples questions or give a review.
Even at work we don't talk work here all the time, it's good to get to know the people around you, how they are doing, and what other things they maybe up to.
It's not like I am completely going off topic and asking anyone here if they have any input on which 42" LCD is the best right now? 120hz? LED? Sharp? Samsung? JVC? Opps, I guess I did. Seriously... anyone got some advice?
-
Wow. Did the guy with ~19 posts just complain about people's lack of quality contributions to the site/thread?
Anyway...
You know, I really need to read up on the 120MHz thing, I'm seeing it everywhere. My first instinct is that it's basically all marketing BS, but I've nothing concrete to support that. -
The super high refresh rate LCD's are the precursor to wide availability of in home 3d.
However, I've seen it in action and it's.... meh. -
Young George Takei...sizzle!! I'm probably one of the guys he feels is posting useless stuff. I think I'll go stand in the corner. -
I have even seen 240Hz.
ON a more important note -

WOOOOOOOOOOOOWHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Congrats jgs, I'm still in phase 2. Yeah the 240 hz and 120 hz displays are based on frame interpolation. The 240 hz add in about 3 extra frames to give you a sense that you are seeing a smooth picture. For Samsung displays, the feature is called AMP or "soap opera effect" because thats how everything looks. Plasmas don't have this problem. Generally, for televisions, all LCD TV's are garbage. Poor black levels, poor motion handling, uneven lighting etc. If you want the best in home theater, get a plasma (Pioneer Kuro if you can still find them).

Estimated Delivery Monday 11/9. Install Win7 64bit. Updates. COD6 11/10.
Woooot!!
100 posts. Woot!!! Woot!! -
Thanks joker. I agree with most of what you are saying, but not necessarily Plasma>LCD.
I'm also looking at the AVS forums. http://www.avsforum.com/
I think it would be cool to plug the lappy in and play big screen. I already have a 36" CRT 4:3 HD tube though... -
You can play games on a plasma too, in fact they look better. I plug my laptop into my plasma via hdmi all the time. I've been through a Samsung A850, B750, Toshiba Regza etc and at the end settled on a Kuro. Read AVS, nothing touches the quality of a Kuro even now. -
I have a 60" fhd rear projection.
I may use a 360 controller and connect it to my laptop(have the adapter) and play Counter Strike:source on my 60" tv
Still phase 2!
And, most likely would the new GPU's not be mxm 3.0?
I assume I can sell a gtx280m on the marketplace for $200-$300 -
I don't know if there will be much demand for the 280m gtx since most new gaming systems come with the 260/280. -
Yea, but anyone with a broken GPU or who wants to upgrade from 9800gtx sli to something better but cheap, etc.
I'll be able to sell it, just for quite cheap
am I right about the new GPU's most likely being mx3.0 or mxm3.0 compatible? -
Thanks joker. Do plasmas still cost more, suffer burn in, and use more power? If the Kuro was better, why did Pioneer discontinue it? I am not debating, I am asking due to lack of knowledge. When I was in the market previously I preferred plasma over LCD but it seems these days LCDs have all the press...
I have a xbox360, and even the 360 controller adapter for the PC, but I prefer shooters with a mouse!!
I think you are still Phase 2 due to ordering after we did, Justin confirmed FIFO (First In First Out). However I think (hope) yours will ship today or tomorrow. Good luck! -
When did you order jqs? I ordered on ocotober 17th
That was just before the backorder came into affect
My guess is the 820qm processors are taking longer, not sure. -
DId you guys not listen to the forum police guy telling us to stay on topic and stop posting useless stuff? Really, who the hell hired him?
But anyways, I also prefer plasma over lcd due to more accurate color and contrast. Although lcd is brighter but plasma has better frame by frame refresh rate...none of that ghosting issue that has been plaging lcd all this time. Maybe things has change since now some are using l.e.d. lcd. -
I'm tempted to say burn in never happens with any new generation panel from Panasonic/Samsung/Pioneer but there is always some exception out there. But that should give you an idea of how rare it is. The most you will see is IR (image retention) that lasts anywhere from a few seconds to hours. My Kuro has never had IR. Pioneer discontinued their plasma business because they overpriced and over engineered their televisions. The kuro 500M i have now is a 2008 model (one of their last ever made) and it still beats any TV on the market (LED LCD etc) for black levels, color accuracy and contrast ratio.
Same here, I hate using a controller. I've been playing FPS games since Wolfenstein 3D and Quake 1. It's too bad the market has shifted so drastically towards mediocre consoles.
Hopefully mine ships soon but I'm in no rush. I've got this Asus to hold me over till then. -
Mine will ship out before jokers, I know that much.
I wonder who ordered first me or jq -
5150Joker, after reading some of your posts..seems like screens of all sorts really fascinate you. Got to give you kudos, looks like you do know what you are talking about. Hopefully when you get this laptop you will be sharing your more in-depth thoughts about its screen quality.
