I haven't had the need to use Windows7 compatibility mode for anything yet, let alone the XP virtual machine. What do you want it for? It was meant for specific business applications that didn't work with Vista/7 and can't play games...

 

I've only booted back to WinXP once in 8 months, and that was to retrieve my old uncompleted torrent downloads.

Hardware has worked with Win7 32bit so far, from a old NEC SuperScript 870 laser printer, Kensington bluetooth module, a Microtek ScanMaker 5950 scanner, a NVTV Dual tuner card, a Hauppage WinTV HVR 1600 HD tunner, a XBOX360, and a XBOX running XBMC.

I share files and printers with a XP laptops over wifi, and it really has been the best OS I have used. It can be a little slow when opening directories or copying files, but I am on old hardware and usually takes 5-10 seconds for the UAC prompt to pop up.

Software - PeerGuradian2 didn't really work but PeerBlock fixed that. I stopped using DameonTools and now use VirtualCloneDrive. It might work now. LogMeIn, AVG, uTorrent, VLC, 7zip, Firefox, ImgBurn all work great. I am going to try MS Security Essentials and move to 64bit on the laptop though.

Backwards compatibility for application development will be the main use of my XP VM, as I always will have a clean XP installation to test on.

Outside of certain niche uses, I agree, most people won't have the need to use it.

Yours will probably ship out tomorrow. Be patient, you've already waited 3 weeks. I don't think the phases mean much at all. They are going to ship the orders based on priority.

Typing this on my W860CU, my temps are a bit high for the cpu (seeing nothing less than 50*C) and it kinda concerns me, so I might reapply my paste and start again.

On another note, the laptop itself is awesome. I'm loving the keyboard and Win 7. I noticed this while installing my RAM though, when it turns on, the GPU fan spins while the CPU fan is dead off. I was scared to hell thinking I got a DOA and will have to return it. I found out that it turns on when it reaches a certain temp so its all good now. Tell me though if you notice this on yours guys.

Will post some more stuff soon. Gonna install some more drivers and updates.

Im used to a constant 70-80 on my macbook

 

His CPU is most likely not in LFM as a result of using high performance mode on default settings.

 

You consider 50c high? That's normal to me.

 

Kevin I'm used to seeing 55*C at load on my old Fujitsu with a shared fan and heatsink, so 50*C when doing nothing is eye catching to me.

 

50C idle is pretty high but I've noticed these i7's run hotter than their C2D predecessors. The Asus I have now idles in the 30s.

 

My idle temp goal for CPU and GPU: 40*C.
