At one point it got so loud that it sounded as if the casing was loose. If I pushed down on the palm rest it would quiet down. It went away after I installed the system drivers. I'm going to open it up and make sure everything was installed properly.

I read a review recently that stated the fans were quite loud. That screen looks beautiful however!

o.o that screen is beautiful!! also, the inside looks really really nice. love the the design. if they just put a nice-r design on the outside, dual HDD, backlit kb and cut this beast's width by 0.4" then i would crap myself everytime i sleep cuz i dont own it :(

looked at the review...quick pro/cons list

    PRO
    • fast as hell, gtx 280m ftw in 15.6" chassis
    • nice screen compared to competing notebooks in the same level
    • top notch matte finish (even tho the outside might not look that unique)
    • good cooling system
    CON
    • very loud (in joker/review opinion, not SS')
    • speakers are subpar (is it worse than asus' joker?)
    • not stellar battery life (face it, it unavoidable with such high components)
    • no dual HDD
    • no backlit kb (watever, you can live without)
    • pretty thick

I finally got Win 7 installed on my NP8690. All I can say is everything is working perfectly. The 1920 and 1080 screen is gorgeous and as far as I can tell no dead pixels. Only hangups i have are the small right shift key and no designated home and end keys. If I use the 10 key I gotta use Fn to do the home and end functions. And its loud, just as loud as my Dell

My GPU temp hovers around 48 to 51 degrees. Is that normal? I haven't played any video games or run any benchmarks. I have noticed others are around high 30s to lower 40s. Finally is there a program that monitors temps and control fan speed and sits on your taskbar like I8kfanGUI? I have SpeedFan but for some reason it cant control the fan speeds

I had to run to walmart to grab some precision screw drivers because one of the screws is way down in the hole and hard to get at for removing the bottom cover. I'm going to add 16 copper blocks to it (I might order more later) and see if temps improve. My idle temps for the i7 were between 49-53C which is about what it should be. GPU was at 46C idle.

Yes, that is the primary function of the eSATA port. As long as your external hard drive has an eSATA connector you will be good to go.

    hey,

i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with AET Solutions Inc. its a montreal based online computer store. i was thinking of ordering my 8690 from them so as to avoid customs fee's and save on sales tax. if anyone has had, or knows of people who have had interaction with AET i would really appreciate there opinion, are they reliable? do they have good customer service? etc.

    cheers, shakes

In the initial full charge and discharge of the battery of laptops, how would you know if it's already on full charge if you buy the laptop without an OS? Does it have a battery meter somewhere in the BIOS? Or you just look at the power LED?

Do any of you hear a buzzing/rattling noise when the fans spin up? Its almost as if something is loose. When I press down on the palm rest or the middle of the keyboard it goes away. I can't figure out what could be causing this either.

No. My fans are pretty quiet in my opinion, although I have only been able to use the machine in a place with some low ambient noise. Certainly no rattling when they spin up.

I'm uploading a video of the noise. You guys are going to be surprised when you hear it. I might have to send the notebook back as defective.

    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AzdPwXKcNZU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AzdPwXKcNZU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='425' height="344"></embed></object>

Edit: It's processing on youtube but should be available in a few minutes.

omg hell joker your lappie seem to be breaking apart.

And yeah why not open up lappie and on it while watching the fan spin. Maybe it is something else dangling that cause the fan to hit against.

And lastly what processor are you using ? 820 processor ?

There has to be a way to just get a set of new turbines, sending back the notebook is a hassle. I wonder if Xotic can send you some turbines? Try that route first as long as Justin says it won't mess your warranty up or anything. It's just a defective bearing most likely, nothing to really worry about, but I would be careful running games and high heat applications, and listen closely for when it fails, because it will. Also aside from reseating them, take them out, and spin each one and you'll find out which one it is, because it will have more resistance. This is honestly a lot better than most things that can go wrong, it could be a lot worse so don't fret man, it'll be ok

By the way does win 7 have a search all media files function like xp and Im not talking about libraries. Lets say I want to do a search of all video files in my hard drive. In XP, I can do that but I cant seem to figure it out in Win 7

Fan noise is very subjective its all depends on personal opinions. I wouldn't say its quiet like a mouse but its definately quieter than what joker has been encountering.

Xmasdummy, where are you seeing that the rams max bandwidth is 667MHz? Our bus speed is rated at 1333MHz so I am not sure why its at 667MHz.

Sounds like a loose piece of plastic, wire or rentiontion mechism that is rattling inside and becomes obvious from the fan vibration.

It's a normal occurance if you own a new car these days (and hours at the dealership getting them to fix it).

I doubt you could fix this easily, so I would return it.

Fixing a car vesus a laptop for noises is totally two different things. A car is more complex with hundreds of moving parts vs maybe a fan or a hard drive in a laptop. I wouldn't return it back without having atleast open the laptop to see if theres any obvious loose ends or if its one of the fans that needs to be replaced. $5 says its the fan.

Unless the fan itself has a loose bolt or plastic, then it would be probably be something else. Pressing down on the chassis and having the noise go away probably means something (other than the fan) is being resolved. If it was the fan itself, it should not be affected by pressure.
