I filed for a refund and I might just order it again later on. I don't want to be stuck with a defective notebook. Justin has been awesome about everything and I feel bad about having to return it. Xotic really takes care of it's customers and I'd recommend everyone go through them. That said, the W860 is an awesome laptop, unfortunately mine had some issues but for those that don't, this really is the best out there.

Man that sucks, every one here feels you :( . Mass production products tends to have its small percentage in defects. Unfortunately you were the unlucky one. The big plus is that you will always have Xotic Pc to be on your side for almost everything. May our best wishes go out to you to have a perfect laptop the next go around.

hmmm...why does ur 3dmark heat up your laptop more than intel burntest? that should NEVER be the case.

    3dmark maxes = 78/71/75/72
    intelburn = 72/67/71/69

weird? nice to see xoticpc being so understanding. definitely a good reseller. which one is better tho, gentech or xotic? lol

Please go get some new artic5/mx2/mx3 thermal paste and reapply it PROPERLY back onto your gpu. Your gpu temp should be 10c lower at the very least. Who ever installed it probably used toothpaste and a lot of it.

    hey,

this question is more directed at spybenj, but if anyone else is in canada and has recieved there 8690 feel free to answer. im wondering how much u ended up having to pay on top of brokerage, shipping, and the cost of the laptop. what did tax/customs total come to? that is if you had to pay customs/tax. also did your package arrive in good condition? or did UPS abuse it.

any info would be greatly appreciated :D

I'd like to ask the peeps, what are your temps on idle and temps for after gaming for a while.

Also, what is the range when it gets a little too hot for the CPU?

My cpu temps been idling around 62-68 when I'm surfing the web. I'd like to know if peeps getting the same temp.

If the noise is still that bad you might want to try some compressed air.
Take off the bottom panel and start blasting, it does sort of sound like there is a loose piece of something in there.
If it is anything that is pretty substantial it could also be throwing the fan out out of whack making the buzzing noise.
    Just my 2 cents.
Either that or a swarm of bees has taken up residence in your laptop :D
    Good luck bro!

    Joker,
why not get your laptop exchanged for a new one?! The odd faulty one is the norm but whilst annoying it wouldn't put me off exchanging it.

Similar to temps I got when I first got my laptop. Their application of AS5 was poor on my GPU. After reapplying it I got much better temps:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5421139&postcount=220

My temps when browsing the web are around 50. Seems a bit high for browsing. You might try reapplying AS5 on your CPU. See my link above for gaming temps.

Do any resellers sell the blu-ray reader separately with bezel? Can the blu-ray drive (non-burner) be purchased elsewhere? (with bezel?)

I'll open her up tonight and post my paste findings and then reapply and post the new temp results.

You know this kind of pisses me off. What's the point of the AS5 option on the order form if they (Sager) applies it haphazardly? And shouldn't this or the broken fan issues been found during the "extensive" burn in testing during production? I am starting to think they don't do anything and it's just fluff talk.

Could u tell me what temps u get while surfing the web and watching vids on your laptop?

damn, those idle temps are really nice. When I game (COD4, and L4D), my CPU temps go up to 77-81. And yet my nvidia card goes only up to 65max (what i've seen so far).

I think ima reapply some AS5 to my CPU. There any tutorial for re-cleaning and re-applying AS5 in NBR? This is my first time doing it.

Edit: anyone tried the IC Diamond Thermal Compound?

I had been wondering about the 'sticker' over the CPU vent for a while. That's what you're talking about right. I was told that it was intentional although it seemed counterintuitive to block the input fan. The GPU vent is clear. I left it alone for now but does anyone know what the purpose of that is? In the picture below it is the vent cover on the left.

    Hi All,
Well I took the plunge and ordered a Sager NP 8690 today from xotic.pc.

It was a tough decision for me, actually - there will be times I need to use it in professional situations and I've read what seems to be a worrying number of quality issues. For these reasons, I debated heavily on getting the NP 8662 instead, but in the end I could not resist the raw power offered by this machine. :D

My guess is that the intake "cover" has holes for the air to come in. This prevents the air going to the exhaust from leaving through the intake fan. Basically proper ventilation, allowing air in one side and out the other, versus air just blowing everywhere. That would be my guess, I'm certainly not a chassis designer.

Wow that is very strange. Both of my vents came without any covers over them. This could explain why some users here are having higher cpu temps than others. My advice is to pull them off to get lower temps like mine has been getting.

There are no small holes...it's literally a small plastic type shield covering the vent (air does leak in through the gaps). The laptop cover itself has holes and then for some reason they cover up those holes with this plastic. The CPU and GPU both have the same ventilation system from what I can tell. sucks air from the bottom and blows it out the back vent. This must serve some purpose. It's not just taped on there it's fastened down. ChinNoobonic's findings seem to confirm what I've suspected in that it prevents proper cooling of the CPU but but I'd like another opinion.

So you don't have that piece of plastic on the inside of your laptop covering your vent?! Can you verify this? The laptop breakdowns by the resellers also show this plastic in their pictures.

Haha, it looks like Clevo has taken on the ideas of Asus. Remove that black plastic from the CPU fan grill. You will get better CPU temps with it removed. End of discussion.

I can verify this by snapping a picture of what mine looks like when I get home later from work.
    You have two options:
    1. Keep the cover on and have way higher temps but slows down the process of dust building up.
    2. Take the cover off and clean the vents out every 1-2 months like what you suppose to and get substantially lower temps.

    I'll take option 2 anyday.

So this is the email I got today:
Sager has received your notebook return. However, they are making deductions for the following things:

    $70 - LCD Scratch

    $35 - Front Cover Scratch

    $15 - Missing packing material

I can send you pictures if you like. However, given the fact that you are a loyal customer, PC Torque will absorb 1/4 of this $120 deduction. We are however otherwise giving you a full refund (to be applied towards new order), including the original shipping and handling you paid :).

We have also processed your new 8690 order and refunded you $350.02 for the difference between the two orders. Your new order should be shipping sometime next week and we will email you the tracking numbers as soon as it is available. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Enjoy your weekend!

Pretty cool, PcTorque is taking some of my damage? Bleh that lid on the 9280 was so cheap and flexy, that LCD got damaged due to just being in the bag. Well I'll use a cloth between the lid now! But I'm guessing the 8690's lid is a much better anti-flex due to being smaller and half the weight.

I reapplied AS5 to both the GPU and CPU and removed the plastic thingy. During COD6, my CPU temps are now 39-70C but my GPU is 45-95C. What is the max temp the GTX 280M? Why did it go up? Crap. Mind you it idles at 49-50 and 95 was the max it hit.

95c is 20c hotter than what it should be on this laptop. Did you forget to rehook up your fan? How did you applied your thermal compound? Make sure you do a thin even spread as it is best for mobile gpu due to its exposed die. I know AS5 needs 1-2 weeks to fully cured but 95c is too hot to begin with.

I did do a even spread, similar to what I did on the CPU that lowered it by 10C. Actually I even did it twice! And I made sure the fan was still connected. I might try the blob in the middle, as that's what Sager did and my temps were lower. Should it overflow the edges?

hmmm, my temps are pretty good now. Ive been surfing the web and now my cpu hovers only around 50-54. I recently opened the cover and looked at my cpu to c if the as5 was applied well or not. It seemed that the as5 was cover mostly around the center of the cpu. So i just used my card to scope up the excess as5 surrounding the cpu and just moved it to the center. and now it looks like my temps are now okay.

and my nvidia gtx is idling around 40-43C. and when gaming like COD4 it goes only up to 62-65 =) I'm happy with those temps.

, i ordered as5 online this morning but now I dont need it. also..... it seems that I HAD AS5 in my drawer in the closet for a long time. Can I still use it?

try the blob in the middle. I don't know much of applying the AS5 (only read things online and other peeps opinions) but I think the keeping the as5 in the center would do better. Don't know just my opinion, could be wrong.

AS5 is very capacitive so be careful to not over use it. A little less than a rice grain would be fine.

smwilli1 - That score looks within the range for 1280x1024. I got 11901 with my 720QM/280M and running at 1280x800.

You're also running stuff in the background there (I can see your system tray), so that will effect your score.
