Well, how about with the fan noise in the W860CU? Are they noticeable?

I don't mind loud fan sound as long as it is pure smooth air that's coming out. I'm not sure if this is the case for my laptop but I'm pretty much sure I'm not hearing the same noise that 5150Joker experienced with his laptop.

EDIT: This is not good, the OCCT CPU Linpack fails at about 9 mins testing and says "Error detected". What could be wrong with that? It also happended to me once with OCCT CPU Test.

Either your CPU got too hot or your memory is faulty.

Tried calling Xotic PC about my DVD burning issue. They couldn't find me in their database, so they forwarded me to Sager. Sager told me to try burning using the PowerDVD software, then hung up on me.

    It didn't work either.

    A++ service so far!

Justin got me in touch with a guy at Sager who was for more helpful, and the drive is being RMAed.

INTERESTING POINT: I mentioned the bass-less sound on my laptop, and the Sager tech said that they have noticed similar problems, and they think it may be due to a decision on Clevo's part to "have the stereo and mic audio go along the same channel" or words to that effect, and they have "brought this to their attention". In other words, from what he knows it's a hardware issue.

I have been reading this forum for a bit now and am about to place my order through Xotic PC but before I do I have a couple quick questions:

    1. Has anyone tried hooking the np8690 up to an external monitor? If so, with what kind and by what method? I had an np8662 before they retired the model that when hooked up via HDMI to my LCD HDTV that looked very dim.

    2. How does the 820qm perform with games (especially Crysis and other games that really put a lot of stress on a processor)? I'm planning on pairing it with 4gb of DDR3 memory and a 320gb 7200 rpm drive.

    3. How long can I safely stress a CPU or GPU in one sitting from gaming before they start to experience permanent ware?

Here's to looking forward to joining the ranks of w860cu/np8690 owners. Thanks in advance.

yes, but sadly in your case it seems like it.
does it fail when you game on it or do your normal work load?
is there any way to exchange the item?

Let's not jump to conclusions yet. kevindd992002, check your memory one stick at a time using memtest86 and the built in memory diagnostic tool in Windows. If both of them pass, run Prime95 with your CPU restricted to a slower speed and use all available memory. If it still passes, then your CPU just can't take the heat and you will need to resort to the art of notebook cooling, meaning that you will need to apply the best thermal paste, X23, with the best application your hands will ever attempt, purchase a decent notebook cooler such as the NC2000, Cryo LX, or Notepal U2, or install a cooling mod on your notebook.

i think he mentioned he has a 'warranty' with that reseller
i doubt ken will be satisfied with an 'overheating' cpu fail or no fail...

One step at a time, trvelbug. He may have both a bad RAM kit and a bad CPU.

I have a hunch it may just be faulty memory as all of the SODIMM DDR3 HyperX kits from Kingston are notorious for having a high fault rate, meaning the chance of him getting a bad kit is probable. Then again, he does have a 920XM ES that may be a bad sample for the reasons I mentioned before.

    1. i have hooked it up to my 55inch 3-lcd hdtv. and yes i have to adjust the visual settings of the tv. i did the same thing with my older hp multimedia notebook too.
    2. i have no idea with the 820pm but it should prove more than adeqaute from the posts ive read
3..i game for hours in this beast when i play empire total war/l4d 2/ dow2/da:0. no hiccups whatsoever. and i do live in a tropical country

although there are a few issues with the 8690, to me they are quite minor. i dont think you can get a more powerful 15incher out there

That changes the playing field. If your memory passed memtest86 through four runs then it's most likely your CPU. If your CPU is giving you execution errors without breaching 90*C yet, then you got a low quality CPU. It's still perfectly functioning though, just don't take it up to those temps in synthetic tests.

    haha nah
high cpu temps and failure on tests even without your memtests and such just points too a cpu issue.
but yes you should test the memory first for sure

The TJMax for the Core i7's is 100*C, the same as the Core 2's. But just like in all previous Clevo's, the ceiling temp is probably limited to 95*C by the ACPI, for safety reasons of course, so your CPU will downclock, terminate the thread, or shut itself down when it hits that temp.

You can only return it to Shirley if it's DOA. Your CPU is functioning normally. Here is Shirley's warranty terms.

Keep in mind that this is the black market you're in. These CPU's are illegal against Intel's ToS to sell to unauthorized end-users. That is the consequence of trying to pinch pennies. Be happy that you have a working 920XM, albeit hot running 920XM, for a low price.

Not sure about an ES, but likely all 720, 820, 920s come from the same wafer/die, and intel just markets them differently. Perhaps with some testing to see which are "better", eg handpicked, one would think for 1000 more it would be a hand picked.. anyway that's what I read about other chips on OC forums. Not sure how they change the multipliers...likely something software related on the chip itself...

Like SS said, thermal paste change may help significantly, or perhaps same paste redo with SS's recommended technique for low pressure heat sink, or get a better HS, much cheaper than a full price chip!

Anyway, I have a retail 920 if I can help by running some tests, but haven't had time to download stress test software and run. I was to get a CD with all that stuff but with the move and all hasn't got to me...giving benefit of doubt....oh and I have the 17" model not the 15"...

hny all :nah: :twitchy:  :notworthy: :chatterbox: :realmad:

Luv the icons...hah! guess I'm easily impressed!

Correct. All CPU's of the same family are born from the same production wafer. However, each CPU is sorted into different quality brackets, which then make up the various clocked models that we see today. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5263074&postcount=21

As I have said before in my previous linked post, ES CPU's were historically made to be rigorously tested by select system builders and Intel wouldn't want to give them a bad sample. From my observation, this held true all the way back to the PIII's as far as I'm concerned. But the fact still stands that there is not another W860CU user here with the 920XM, ES or OEM, willing to reproduce the results from kevindd992002's test. Without anything to compare to, it is very, very difficult to assuringly say that the 920XM Q3B8 is hot. But after taking a quick glance at some of the tests done on 820QM's, the gap in temperature does seem to be fairly large to merit that either the 920XM ES is indeed low quality, or the CPU cooling assembly is faulty.

Both of us have the W870CU with the 920XM, but we cannot use our notebooks as a direct comparison to kevindd992002's 920XM equipped W860CU despite the similarities between the two notebooks. Contrary to what I have said before about the cooling systems between the two notebooks being the same, they are subtle differences. The two notebooks use different fans and the W870CU uses slightly larger radiators. That including the larger internal space and additional intakes on the backpanel will influence the temperatures enough to set it apart from the W860CU. This is already considering that the black sticker over the CPU fan intake and the foam ring around the GPU fan intake are removed on the W860CU.

That seems kinda dumb... Ask Clevo and they'll probably say it was Sager's decision to not put a fan in their bathroom or something.

It still seems like that should be fixable by software or disabling the mic or something.

If not, that's a huge, huge, huge flaw and a big bummer. Permanently screwed up sound is an enormous problem for a multimedia device.

Did he mention the touchpad or fingerprint reader? :)

I just ran Crysis Warhead at 1600x900 with no AA and all other settings on "Gamer" (which is the 2nd highest of the 4 quality settings in CW).

    Min FPS: 21
    Max FPS: 47
    Average: 31

Max temperature for my CPU was 65C, for my video card 69C.

I'd say those are some pretty cool temps, right?

I was playing the new King Arthur game last night (lots of fun but kinda steep learning curve), and while my GPU never broke 70, the processor was at 80. That seems kind of high to me.... Well, I'll be putting some MX-2 on soon and getting rid of whatever AS5 is on there. Hopefully that'll help the processor in particular. It even idles at 50 (GPU idles at 41 or so).

When running Crysis Warhead does how many cores does it use? I remember in the L4D2 demo there was an option to turn off multi-core processing. Is there a similar option for Crysis Warhead?

Hi guys im new here (in terms of posting) so if there's anything I should know before posting please let me know.

Recently I received a W860CU and a ES of the i7-920XM together in the same box from Intel. I put a SSD hard drive in and the unit runs FAST! However, there has been one problem that keeps reoccuring that i don't know how to fix. Whenever i play COD4 or MW2 for more than 30minutes, the unit would reboot itself. The problem happens consistently but if i just let it idle there isn't any problem.

I contacted Clevo about this issue and this is what I got as a response: "According to your information from RMA form, your CPU is i7 920XM but our CPU specification for model W860CU is i7 720QM and i7 820QM – please check CLEVO website http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/products/prodinfo_2.asp?productid=235 as well. I talked to our technicians (oversea), they mentioned CPU is over spec. Please try by using another CPU by that spec I provided to test and please let me know if you have any concern. Thank you"

When i got the email, my first response is ????? I see resellers providing this combination and users here posting about it, so I'm quite surprised by them. What do you guys think? Is this simply an overheating issue that can be solved with better thermal paste? I've ran a stress test before on the unit and there were no problems :/

I don't understand why my GPU temps reaches 89-93C peak after an OCCT GPU test and about 80-85C for my 920XM after CPU Linpack test. Also, my CPU is throttling when it reaches about the mid-70s, this is evident because while benchmarking the CPU fan reaches its loud state and it suddenly slows down, goes up in speed again, slows down, and so on. This explains why there is a fluctuation in my temps for the CPU.

    @kevin
i did not run that benchmark but the highest ive ever gottenis 83 or 85 for cpu and 73 or 75 for gpu after gaming for hours. i forget which game though, maybe etw. normal temps for our ambient temp.
afaik the i7 really run hot and your temps of 80-85 seem ok considering you have a more powerful cpu. but throttling at 70 seems a bit disturbing.
the 89-93 gpu range is definitley on the high side for sure.
ive never openned my unit yet, but could you have 'unhinged' the thermal paste/gpu/heatsink assembly while installing your cpu?

Hi all. I am thinking of getting a external LCD monitor to use with my NP8690 laptop, does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a area for this on this forum?

I would like to get a HDMI LED back lit LCD, something in the 24" 1920x1080 or preferably 1920x1200 resolution. I've looked at Acer, Samsung, NEC, and Dell. I am also considering the Dell U2711 which is a 27" LED with 2560x1440 resolution. Can our laptop output that resolution over HDMI?

Crap I just saw on http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gtx_280m_us.html that the Maximum Digital Resolution for the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M in our W860s is 2048x1536.

So there's no way to run the Dell Ultra Sharp 27-30" higher resolution monitors (2560x1440 and 2560x1600) from our W860s?

There is no slot for the Turbo Memory. There are only slots for the HSDPA modem and Wifi Card. Even though they have the same slots as the Intel Turbo Memory, it won't work.

As long as UDPixel is visible, it can't be going on in the background or something since it needs to be actively using the area of pixels where your stuck one is.

I didn't have much luck with those flashing programs alone, I had to rub mine out ;)

Does the turbo memory have anything to do with an i7 processor's ability to increase the frequency of active cores when other are not in use?

Unfortunately without a Dual-Link DVI port, there is no way to run higher resolutions. According to Justin@XoticPC the W8xxCU series only has Single-Link DVI.

How did you rub yours? I tried rubbing the stuck pixel but it won't get unstuck :(

Not really sure about this. You have to ask somebody else with proper knowledge, I don't want to go giving you assumptions :)

Turbo Memory and Turbo Boost are two different things.
