Mine's status is still on pending though... Ordered on 5th March, though I hope it's because my reseller only updates the status once they receive the laptop from Sager.

Which company did your order from? I ordered from Mucro and they updated my status after the laptop was shipped from Sager. Took exactly 2 weeks to arrive on my doorstep. :)

To everyone that got there's with a 5870 congrats.
If you can post some temps it would be great.
I know there good in it's bigger brother but just want to make sure the smaller size does not hinder the cooling.

Sure thing. I'm gonna run a couple benchmarks on mine with the stock thermal paste and then possibly again with some arctic silver I have laying around.

I'm starting to consider adding a second hard drive to the 8690. Which model sata enclosure would fit the optical drive bay?

Mucro as well, so they only update status when it's shipped, that should explain it.

Any 9.5mm SATA ODD caddy will work. The face bezel may need a little work, but it will function just fine with any HDD or SSD you shove in there.

hey guys, I was reading some posts that occurred a good bit earlier in this forum about methods of applying thermal paste.

the argument was between the spreading and the dot method. Did anyone ever post a link showing actual experimental temp differences?

I know there is that video on youtube showing that the spreading method creates air bubbles, but it also covers more space than the dot method or the line method.

I was just wondering if we have actually verified experimentally (by showing actual cpu and gpu temps at load) which method is better.

    cheers.

    Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and have been lurking in this thread for a week. I would like to thank the contributors for such an informative thread.

Since my current laptop graphic card crashed again, one month after reviving it using the oven trick. I am very concerned about heat issues.

I am planning to get a new laptop for gaming (mainly WAR) and work, but couldn't make up my mind. The contenders were alienware, asus and toshiba. But after doing my research on user feedback, I have decided to go for sager since it addresses the heat issue.

One question for fzhfzh, I am planning to get from Mucro in singapore as well, did you purchase the two year warranty and 30days no dead pixel package? I noticed they do not offer the 30days no dead pixel with the one year warranty :(

Hope to see your feedback on the ati card too.

    Take care

Hey guys. I got my 8690 earlier today and I'm really happy with it. The build quality seems absolutely amazing. Opened up the box and slapped Win7 pro 64bit on it and it is flying. There are two problems I seem to be having with it so far.

The first problem is with the wireless, it is extremely slow and fluctuates big time. With my old laptop (HP DV5z) I would get great speed and max out my internet connection over the wireless. With this wireless it seems to fluctuate between 8 KB/s and up to 1.0 MB/s. I installed the driver that came with the laptop, I haven't tried any other drivers yet. Maybe I will see if there is an update from Intel.

The second problem is that I was going to post temps for everyone since it seems to be a common concern, but my video card temp isn't showing up in HWmonitor. A screenshot of the HWmonitor window is below. Can someone help me get it working?

Also, if 3Dmark06 EVER finishes, I will do a test with just a fresh win7 install and the included drivers from the CD.

The wireless driver that initially comes with the notebook is ancient garbage. Update to the latest one on Intel's website.

Well here is the 3d06 score.

    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=13435119

It isn't exactly stock, there is one thing I did. I read some posts earlier in this thread about the piece of plastic (or whatever it is) blocking the fan to the CPU. I went ahead and took that off because to me it doesn't make sense to block the intake for a fan, pretty stupid imo (hopefully that didn't mess with my warranty). I'm not sure if that would have any effect on my 3d06 score or not, but it did have really nice load temps. I will attach a screenshot of HWmonitor. Should I be impressed with this score?

+1000 on upgrading the Wireless drivers. Get the latest & greatest from Intel. I got mine a month back and have run it exclusively wireless and it's super solid & stable.

As for the ATI not showing up on HWMonitor, chances are the latter hasn't been updated to talk to the ATI card and pull the temps... hence why it is missing.

Honestly, forget about what's on the CD. Go over to Sager's site, get the latest & greatest drivers that they've posted, then supplement those with more updated drivers from major vendors (like the wireless drivers, etc.).

I got my box a few weeks ago and I haven't bothered. Is there a need to do so, that I'm not aware of? If there's no need, why bother?

Just a question, do Mucro have that "Deposit received and pending" status all the way until Sager shipped it to them? And is the status updated when Sager starts shipping or when Mucro actually received it? 1 week past now, and it's still "Deposit received and pending"...

It makes my anxious and very sad not having it now and having to deal with my 3 years old laptop with only an ATI 1600, maybe I'll just start overclocking it until it burns...

I only had, the date I ordered, "Pending". Then, the day after, I paid in full. Then the status changed, on CNY night to "Confirmed and Paid". Then when Sager shipped, a week later, it changed to "Shipped". Which payment method did you choose? 10% now 90% on delivery? If that's the case, then they'll update you when the order is shipped. Or I could be wrong, you should try emailing or calling them.

    1. You cant the new driver update isn't out yet. Hopefully will be at the end of the month.

    2. It doesn't show temps the best way to do it is to download Hardware monitor which displays all temps.

The piece of plastic is just a really thin piece of plastic, almost like a film type material. It is sticky on one side and is just simply blocking the fan intake on the chassis, it isn't stuck to the fan but the chassis.

yeah, im not sure why HWmonitor doesnt show gpu temp for me? i am confused. also, i havent noticed a peice of pastic covering anything. if there is one i reckon it doesnt matter much since the cpu is idling right around 48-50C with the stock thermal paste.

i just ran 3dmark06 at standard res (1260) and got 14205!!!
cpu temps after 1 run got to about 60C

question: the two cpu test parts in 3dmark06 ran at like 1fps...is that normal?

    Yes, that's normal.

Did you connect your notebook to an external monitor when you ran the benchmark at the standard default resolution of 1280x1024? Your 1600x900 panel is not capable of producing that resolution for the benchmark.
