so you have the 285m now?
-
Lucky you. Me, not so much.
I have the GTX280m. If I knew the HD5870 was going to be released a week after I made my purchase, I would've waited. My reseller, Mucro, didn't have the option of GTX285m when I made my purchase. They quoted me 1070 MYR for the new card and this is excluding shipping.
-
Wow is the 1070 for the 285M or the 5870 ?
Sonice: Wy cant you ship yours back. If you cant the 285M is still a great card dont worry about that. -
The 1070 is for the 5870. And I have a 280m. Not the 285m. XD
-
How much are they selling the card for?
-
According to the conversion rate at 6th March:
1MYR = 0.297575USD
So, 1070 MYR = 318.405 USD. -
thats almost the price of the desktop version,
that is mighty cheap for the fastest mobile gpu around -
Not likely, ordered from Singapore, my reseller told me Sager side is still testing the stability of 5870 on 8690 so might need to wait for a while if I chose the 5870 option, I'm expecting around 1 month before it could come to me.
-
Yeah, where is the place who quoted you 1070MYR??
-
They're the reseller based in Singapore. Mucro Pte Ltd. Why?
-
Maybe they will ship one to the states
-
Lol.... How much are you being quoted for the HD5870 card? O_O
-
guys currently im using 820qm, should i upgrade the processor to 920xm or just get hd5870 1st? between this 2 which will i see the most improvement upon daily usage such as gaming, some light video rendering and photo shop?
-
RJ said they should be the same as the 285M, which is currently $490 USD. Shipping puts it well into $500.
Although, that could change. They aren't sure when they will even be available for purchase seperately so pricing will be unknown until stock gets up to par. -
Now that's an awesome price! Get 10 of them.
[/sarcasm]
I guess I'll wait till the end of the month to get the card. There should be a trade-up program for the cards. @_@ -
The 5870 will give you more bang for your buck. You will gain DX10 capability and GDDR5 memory.
The 920XM is a minuscule improvement over the 820QM for double the price. However, you CAN overclock the 920XM, whereas the multipliers are locked for both the 820QM and 720QM.
EDIT: I'm sure your reseller will do it... for a fee. I'd just be hesitant to send my new laptop back through the mail to get it upgraded. I had a hard enough time waiting for it to arrive the FIRST time
In theory I could buy the 5870 and wait for it to arrive, install it, then sell my 285m. Problem is, I don't have $500 to burn, even if I do get most of it back in the end. -
We are in the same boat. I won't mind if they charge me for a fee (shipping + some mark-up for the card) as long as it's not the full price of the card, which is utterly ridiculous. I also doubt many people would want my GTX 280m, now that the GTX 285m and HD5870 are out and they are a bit cheaper. Hopefully it all turns out alright.
Edit:
Reply from my reseller:
"No. We will not be able sell or trade off the card.
Sager will not accept returns.
No returns are allowed...... "
Guess I'd have to enjoy the card I have for now.
-
I don't think you would want an exchange if you were to pay the shipping fee, Singapore to US's shipping fee is around US$200, now, times that by 2, you got yourself the price of a new card.
-
Well that's ok. I'm really enjoying my 285m anyway.
-
I have shipped a 20 lb package to New Zealand that was half that.
I don't see how an item that small would cost $200 USD. -
Same here, you can always slowly overclock your GTX 285M as well using Nvidia Tools 6.05. As it stands, it is still a great card and more games are Nvidia optimised.
-
can i ask wat is the latest Nvidia driver u guys using?
-
196.75
/10char -
I wouldn't use those: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=7551
-
Well, warranty, UPS shipping a 8690 cost US$200, that's why I can't really order from US resellers, if there's any reason I need to RMA, I would be really screwed.
-
Whats RMA? I had to write my nuber on the outside of the box.
-
I saw that.
Fortunately, my card is fine and temps are great. I have no reservations about this driver at all - great performance. -
The latest isn't always the greatest. I tested many of the latest Drivers and none compare to 186.81. 186.82 gives me Powermizer problems so I stay with 186.81.

...or, from the vendor's perspective-
Requires Meticulous Augmentation. -
True, but have you tried them?
They are better. Even SS made the permanent switch

Hey nice Thread! I´ve looked for something like that, because in the German forums the discussion about the clevos is very sobering
I want to order the W860CU or the W870CU with HD 5870 from mySN, but I can´t decide which I should take
Can you help me with the decision. How portable is the 17" ? Until now I was sure to take the W860CU because I go every weekend to my hometown.
Another Question, I read that some of you change the thermal paste of the GPU and CPU. Is this for every W860CU/W870CU necessary ? Or depends it on the reseller ? I think The_Moo reached an good improvement with his 17" (from 90 to 77 C). Which paste is good and is there a manual how to apply the paste ?
Is there else important to know about the Notebooks like to change the thermal paste ?
Payne -
Applying paste is only necessary if your temperatures are too high.
-
Applying your own thermal paste is not a must, the stock paste will work fine, but applying your own can benefit your overall temps. MX-2 or MX-3 is probably the easiest to apply and cools quite well.
As for the portability I have the NP8690 and it is great well built and light at te same time. I cant speak for the 870 but I would guess that it will still be portable but naturally it will be slightly heavier. Do you need the extra increase in screen size or a slighter lighter notebook (-1lb). -
The W860CU is pretty large to begin with, so I don't think the size difference would be noticeable.
-
I think the 17" and 15.6" would be distinguishable, but I would still take the lighter weight over the extra 1.4".
-
You aren't going to really notice a 1lb difference.
-
I think so its equivalent to a bag of sugar in the UK. that's pretty heavy would avoid it if I didn't need the extra screen size.
-
Hey guys. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. So I just got a W860CU from Malibal. I love the thing but there is one thing that is kind of annoying. I notice that I have to press a lot harder on the right click button to use it than I do on the left click button. Also, the right click button does not really "click" not like the left click button does. Is this the case for all of you guys as well or is the right click button on my laptop just defective?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Mine also doesnt make the affirmative clicking sound, but it is responsive and I dont have to press really hard. If its unresponsize I would send it back if its just the sound then I think that is normal.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015
-
Well it's not like I have to put a ton of pressure when I right click but I do have to put more pressure on it than when I left click. Is this your case as well. Every other laptop I had both buttons were the same.
-
is i7 820qm worth it? or should i just take the 720?
I'll be using this as gaming machine and I usually like to try out new games thats coming out -
Just take the i7-720 and save for a better CPU upgrade like the Extreme 920, its the only one thats overclockable and will show a noticible performance increase. If however you have have no intentions of upgrading at a later date and have money to spare then the 820 is the best price/performance.
I went with the i7-720 and are happly playing all new games. At High settings.
I have sent mine back for a GPU upgrade so cant check for definate but....I dont think I have to apply alot of pressure not enough to make me worry that its faulty. I use an external mouse though. -
Hi Guys,
I am currently using Nvidia GTX 280M graphic card, anyone know where i can find the driver update? -
Anyone here tried the 196.86 drivers yet? They can be found
http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/26255-v19686-windows-7vista-64bit-dell-mobile/
Read the thread over at Guru3D, seems to be a good one with no probs in cooling. Performance also seems to be great. -
Well guys, after much back and forth, I finally took the plunge and ordered an 8690 yesterday!
Can anyone recommend a good, compatible spare power adapter? Ideally with several types of plugs for the car, the plane, etc. Thanks. -
So, did anyone had their Sager 8690 with 5870 shipped yet? Not including the barebone purchases.
-
Yeah, mine shipped this morning from Xotic. Delivery estimate is Friday. No options changed except screen, went with the 1920x1080.
-
I thought this looked promising: Kensington K33197 120W Auto/Air Ultra Portable Notebook PC Power Adapter
Though it would be great if someone who actually has a spare car/plane adapter could give their impressions -
Mine shipped this morning also with the 5870 from Xotic. Exact same specs as iguana, the only upgrade I chose was the 1920x1080 res. Estimated delivery of 3/11 (Thursday).
