    Weird.

    Mine looks like this:

    Driver Packaging Version 8.681-091124a-092499C-ATI
    Catalyst™ Version 09.12
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 8.01.01.984
    2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
    Direct3D Version 8.14.10.0716
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.9232
    Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2009.1124.2131.38610

EDIT: Maybe you installed a Beta version driver so it's not showing up in catalyst?

It's probably the only design flaw in W860CU, the bassless headphone jack. I bought myself an X-Fi expresscard and that solved the problem due to the audio being played not from the laptop soundcard.

But if you're not into spending money there's a program that lets you adjust sound levels:

The 5870 is very good - so long as you don't want to play Battlefield Bad Company 2. My desktop is more powerfull than my 860, but it has an ATI card and takes ages to load this game - often I'm the last to join.

My laptop with 285gtx in it means I'm one of the first.

Played BF BC2 with HD res and max settings, frame rate is very smooth, for the loading, IMO it's more to do with hard disk rather than graphics card, and I didn't notice any long loading times either, maybe i'm not that sensitive to loading times, the only loading time I couldn't stand was pre-patch the witcher.

Hard drives do have a big impact. The ATI drivers are a known issue with BFBC it's a known issue.

Try doing a test on a 32 player server and see how many people have already joined before you. Seriously by the time I join the first points have already been captured - my desktop has a 10000rpm raptor in it.

I've been playing BFBC2 with the 5870 and found no problems with the loading time, perhaps you might get in slightly quicked with an Nvidia card, but it minimal.

A few more questions I have:

    1. Is there any way to set the top touchscreen buttons (mail button, M, W) to go to certain programs/folders (or change them at all?)

    2. Is there any easier way to change the volume/mute rather than mouse clicking on the actual volume icon or pressing Fn while pressing F5, F6, etc?

    thanks guys

    1. Yes and no. The buttons are tied to your default internet and mail programs. So you can change your default internet program to firefox or chrome, and your mail program to thunderbird instead of outlook, but you can't set the mail button to open microsoft word, etc.

    2. No. For this reason I always use external speakers with computers so I have access to a knob for volume control.

This has been my number one problem with the w860; fortunately I came across a very smart little program that answers most of these wishes :

    http://webpages.charter.net/krumsick/

is called keytweak and basically it remaps any hardware key of your keyboard to something else. With it I remapped the mail touch button to Volume Mute, and the top right * and / buttons to volume up/down. The (M) touch key cannot be remapped as it is non standard silent mode key.
The program is pretty straightforward to use and it does not need to be in memory - it does the work then you restart PC then all is set.

having some issues with keytweak, how exactly did you remap your volume controls? I cant seem to do it properly (do you have a screenshot maybe of your remapped keys?) this would help a ton thanks..

Well.. I start the application... I hit the "half teach mode" button... I hit the "Scan code" button... then I hit the button I want to remap, say the Touch Sensitive Mail Button... then I choose from the drop down list "Destination Key", whatever I want it to be ( Volume Mute for me)... then I hit remap... then I repeat these steps for all the keys I want to remap, they all go to "pending changes" and when you're done you hit "Apply" under Pending changes, restart, and that's it.

edit: I attached a zip with a remap file you can open with keytweak, doing what I said in the post before this.

Can anyone recommend a good x-fi sound card for this laptop? Im a noob so...

    1. I'll need a size 54 card?
    2. The card goes right in the card slot right? Does it stick out? Anyone have pics of a sound card in their laptop?
    3. It will basically only enhance the headphone quality correct? Or does it add quality to the stock speakers as well?

this seems to be the only compatible sound card that I can find that'll hook up to the express card (and im not sure its compatible with win7)..

Creative makes a USB sound card as well, but I haven't been able to find an in-depth review of it anywhere.

    Edit:

You will not be able to overclock the i7-720QM. That ability is reserved for the (outrageously overpriced) i7-920XM. As for the MR5870, you can check out the overclocking for noobs thread here.

I have the "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook", bought for the previous notebook. It just sounds great, and it's perfect with my expensive audio system s (Creative Inspire T6100, Sennheiser HDR 130 and Klipsch Image S4). Pity it stretches out a few centimeters, but lesser than the wireless adapter of the Logitech VX Revolution ;)

If the nvidia control panel doesn't work (which it should), you'll want to use ATITool, but with the same techniques described in the thread.

Apparently the Creative USB soundcard works almost as well as the Express card but I opted for the card because I need my USBs.

And it doesn't play through the laptop speakers mind you...it has the option but never works for me .

There are others though, Creative just publicise theirs more than the rest. Turtle Beach is another brand to go for.
    http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/micro/home.aspx

    Echo is another one too:

    http://www.echoaudio.com/

Sidenote: nooo my BC2 sig hasn't updated yet :(

I've turned up an interesting problem with mine, I got back to school yesterday and tried to hook up my external monitor.

With it plugged into the DVI from startup, windows would not start; when I plugged it in after startup and tried Fn+F7, the computer froze up and I had to hard reboot. Anyone else run into this problem?

I'm using the beta 10.3 drivers, heavn't found a link to the real ones, so if someone can point me to them, maybe they will work.

I had the same problem when I updated my drivers. The stock drivers do not have this problem, so if you can deal with using those, I'd stick with them. I just needed to change mine to support DX10 in Bad Company.

I did notice that if you plug and unplug the monitor and wait a while, the laptop screen will work again. Then you can plug in the external monitor and set it up. For some reason, I couldn't fix the resolution on the external though.

    Food for thought.

Any other words of wisdom appreciated.

Huh, that's weird that you had the same problem with the nvidia card, I was thinking it was just ATI not having its act together. I didn't run into any problems with the stock drivers (will have to see about the monitor), so I guess I'll just rollback to those until there is a fix for the new ones.

Does Sager/Clevo ever update the stock drivers? I know AW literally never did...

Edit: Finally found the final 10.3 version, will try it once I finish the last 800 words of the essay I am writing...
