OK, my 8690 is getting shipped back from Sager after getting my GPU replaced, very grateful to them for not charging for the graphics card even though I'm the one who messed with it.

Gahh, I uninstalled (do I need to do any special cleaning?) the 10.3 drivers and reinstalled the ones on the disk-no luck, still does the same thing. I'm stumped-guess I may need to actually call customer support unless anyone has any brilliant ideas

Did you uninstalled then cleaned the residues left behind? Sometimes older drivers are kept within Windows and it doesn't get overwritten when you install new drivers.

Programs like Driver sweeper or Driver Cleaner will help

Well I took the plunge and ordered a W860CU! I got the barebones from RJtech w/ wifi and upgraded screen then bought everything else.
    I found a i7 620m for 245 so that'll be the CPU, 4gb of 1333, and lastly 128gb of the new kingston gen2 SSD!
I'll post pics when I get everything in!

As far as I can see, all of those cards stick out a bit. However, make sure you try out SRS Audio Sandbox 15 day demo before you decide to buy an X-fi.

Nice to hear that. I am still waiting for mine after two weeks. Was informed that sager is waiting for the GTX285 card. :(

What type of thermal paste is your lappy getting from this repair?

Hi all, I just ordered my W860 from Kobalt computers in the U.K. Can't wait to get it in a couple of weeks although I'm a bit nervous since it's a lot of money and I've been known to make bad buying decisions :p

However, I've been persuaded by reading this thread that this is a good computer.

I got the 820QM cpu, ati gpu, 6 gigs of ram, 500gb HD and the sound card (after people's comments on the crappy sound)

I really hope it all works fine when it gets here :)

edit: I've been using a reaally crappy old aspire 9420 with intel graphics for over a year know so I'm hoping I'll be blown over by the W860

    :D

edit2: I should mention that I got the FullHD screen and blu-ray reader too. So excited.

Don't need to download anything, just go to control panel -> region and language -> under administrative tab -> change system local to whatever language your game runs in.

Alternatively, you can just use AppLocale application to run your games.

It average, on the lower side though. I easily break 12k with my set up and its the exact same as yours if im not mistaken. I will have 3D score up tonight under a thread 'Bench and temps Galore' if you want to reference later.

Here is some comparison temps on my 8760 ... My 920 is an ES ... Redoing the paste a few times on the CPU till you get it just perfect can help alot and you can see my GPU idle temps are very low from trimming the can around the GPU so the heatsink sits nice and flat on the GPU ... Im not running a cooler and my machine is just sitting flat on a laptop desk cart...

I could never get my GPU temps low enough with just bending the can since the sides of the can end up hitting the CPU heatsink .. The card will never lay totally flat atleast on my machine... So if you can hit 65 under 06 on the GPU without trimming congrats ;)...

I could not be happier with my temps as they are though ... I can game for hours and see 73-75 when im done...

Did anyone else know that we have a vacant minicard slot with an antenna labeled "3G" as well as a sim card slot hidden under the battery pack?

Hey! I'm going the same way with that. I didn't see an option to get a 3G card but since the sim slot is already built-in, only plugging a HSDPA card would be great.

Now where do I find one ?

^ yep, the spacebar can fail to register a lot on this pc unfortunately. Fortunately the keyboard & keypad (which is just downright nasty) are the only real downsides to the computer I can find..

Ok, now I'm really confused, my GPU temps were just fine, idling in the high 40's and maxing out in the low 70's after gaming.

All of the sudden today they jumped up to idling in the mid-high 50's, and maxing out in the 80's (max recoded was 96). What on earth could have happened? I hadn't opened the case at all, jarred it or anything.
I decided to open it up to make sure I hadn't sucked anything in, nothing. Then I went ahead and applied as5, no change.

Any ideas? I would really hate to have to send it in-my original packaging is at home, so I would have to have that mailed to me here at school first.

As I don't know where exactly you are, this might be relevant. Have the (external) temperatures gone up where you are? With spring coming for most of the United States, with the rising temperatures that follow, that could account for your higher temperatures.

Not really, it's still colder outside than in, so I've been at a pretty steady heated room temperature (low 70'sF)

Also, I somehow think that it would be difficult for my max temps to raise more than 20C over just a few degrees ambient temperature difference anyway.

I got my first laptop from Kobalt and I also got the new one in my sig from them too. They are very good and of a very high build / test quality but there usually are some kind of delays although it is not always their fault. My advice to you is to take their ETA's as exactly that, an estimate.

this is subjective of course and ive brought this up probly too much but coming from a dell and a mac ive noticed it is quite worse yes. Keys are harder to press and the touchpad is not as exact as most laptops. Fortunately I was able to fix up the keypad a bit so that its a bit more reliable (if anyone wants to know just click on the finger sensing pad icon, turn ON click lock, and change the settings to a lesser value. Ive noticed this adds more exactness when using the pad.) I still just use a mouse all the time but it is a shame the touchpad is the way it is.
Thru this forum and its great users Ive been able to solve my sound volume control issue(keytweak), sound quality issue (srs for now, maybe a sound card later) but my last foe is the touchpad, I was even wondering if I could get it replaced somehow actually lol (anyone heard of this?)

Yes, it's subjective, some people actually find those keyboards that are easy to press as bad, this includes me. IMO, I feel that the keyboards with harder to press keys are actually of higher quality, that's why you get cheap easy to press membrane keyboards for 10 dollars, but even the cheapest mechanical keyboard right now will cause at least 100-150 dollars of damage.

I just have one more issue with it until it'll be workable daily for me I think (and if anyone can help me PLEASE chime in)
EDIT: nevermind, I was able to fix it by messing around w settings some more

No worries, I'm patiently impatient. Besides, I can't get it before the 21st anyway since I have someone going to the U.K to pick it up for me :)

edit: and if it takes longer than that, well damn. But I'd work something out.

Man I have such a backlog of games to get through once I get this computer: Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Batman Arkham Asylum, GTA4, Empire TW, even DoW2 :D

Nope, its definitely ramping up a lot. I almost wonder if something with the thermal monitoring is broken (using hwinfo). I just noticed that the CPU was going into the 80's as well, which seems really high for the processor, but that fan is still not going up that much.

Well, HWInfo should be getting the same information as your fans are getting, so if it's reporting high temperatures, the fans should also recognize the high temperatures. Have you changed drivers or anything recently? Driver/BIOS changes can often affect temperatures.

by the way for sager a temp of 103°C is safe. thats the big lie sager wants to sell us. just check your thermal paste and avoid temps higher than 88°C

I was wondering about the drivers, I changed those up yesterday, cleaned everything out (trying to deal with another issue) and reinstalled the stock drivers. It was after that (a while later though) that I first noticed the rise. Later I figured out what was wrong with my other thing so I put the 10.3 drivers back on, thinking there might be a change, nothing. Maybe something got messed up...guess I might want to try a clean install of Windows, wouldn't take too long. Maybe reflash the BIOS too.

Well, when gaming I'm consistently running at 89/90, and peaking at 95. I applied AS5 yesterday after I started noticing problems, guess I may want to try again.

    Edit, peaked at 98

It's on right now, I pulled it off last night when I was working on the thermal paste but put it back when I realize I might have to send it back in. There was no difference in GPU temps.

Fact of the matter is that the temps have risen significantly from what they were originally (on the order of 15 degrees idle, 20 degrees under load). All Sager would tell me was that it was still within safe limits, even though I told them this...

well lie to them send it back and they will just replace it, I doubt they have the time to start up the comp and check. After all its there already they might as well do it.
