My personal experience with a W860CU is not that good. I have a 940XM also, but I am only able to achieve x20 on all cores (~2.6 GHz), anything higher and the laptop just shuts down. And that is with HT disabled, if I leave it turned on, then the maximum multiplier becomes x18 before the laptop just gives up.

I don't know if that's my system or if it's normal.

What really confuses me is that I can reach x29 x28 multipliers on 1 or 2 cores, and the power drain from the CPU is then much higher than 4 cores at x21, and yet the system is perfectly stable and doesn't shut down.

    *boggle*

shuts down maybe due to power shortage?

That's what I thought initially, and therefore bought a Targus 180W PSU.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to help.

It won't shut down due to a power deficiency; it just won't be able to operate at the selected frequencies, sometimes called "power throttling." That's what happens now if you increase the multipliers, but leave TDP/TDC at stock settings of 55W/47A (920XM). Even if you set to 24x across the board, at full load, the processor will only operate at about 17.5x because it's not getting enough power to go higher.

Is your 940XM an ES by chance? Ordinarily, that shouldn't matter, but the very limited overclockability of all 4 cores of your processor and the shutdowns are so contrary to the general experience that it at least raises the possibility of a defective processor. Sure hope not.

so it shuts down due that it only operates max at 55w, while it supposed to run above 55w.

interesting, i cant wait to try this myself :D

im very happy with my w860cu, especially with the express card slot, it help me alot in may ways :D need to see how is the performance of the 470m gtx before deciding to get it .

revelator, does the es effect alot it oc ing part? should i get the original version instead? the price difference do kinda cost an arm and leg for a small piece, i prefer get the 980ex of the desktop for the pricing :p

It is a 940XM ES indeed. I'm trying to get it swapped for a retail one, but it looks like my supplier has a very limited number of non-ES processors.

When I get a new CPU, I'll let you know of the results.

    thanks-

55W is just enough to allow x16 on 8 cores, it seems. According to HWiNFO32, the TDP actually rises to ~62W at times, without any overclocking.

The shutdown problems I get happen when setting the TDP/TDC to 80+/60+, which is the only way to reach higher multipliers.

Standard TDP for the 940XM is 62W, apparently in response to the 25-24-18-18 multiplier scheme on the 940. The 920 is limited to 55W.

revelator, i have 920xm and using XMG set it to +x4 OC, i can reach high up to 3.7ghz, higher than 940xm which has 3.33ghz??. is the cpu-z figure really reliable? so far stable and maximum temp i got was 75 C. guys is it bad playing an hour with that temp?? i don't want to fry my w860cu, since you are more knowledge and i am asking your expertise.. Thanks.

i can even reach high up to 3.715ghz @ 28x stable temp. so far better performance in gaming rather than stock clocks which only can up to 24x. OC'd +4x really increased 20% i guess or much better and no shutdown issues.. :)

hi guys , i'm looking forward to buying NP 8690 with 470m when it comes out . My question is : Is it worth buying 470m instead of 460m , it will cost 150$ more , i play many different kind of games : RTS Total wars , SC2 ,FPS FEAR 3 ...up coming games. I want something to be able run those games at High setting atleast, i may play at Ultra. In this case , is 460m enough?
I have noticed the following issue with power adapter i may face . I'm going to build a np8690 with i7 740q (45w), 470m(75w), 6gb RAM .The cpu and gpu alone already reach 120w , but manufacture Adapter for np8690 i heard only has 120w as its maximum. Am i wrong? so will this adapter be able to handle my machine?

you can always go get the oem of 180w psu if you find the 120w not enough.

ThrottleStop itself, operating in monitoring mode (default) is one of the best ways to see what the CPU is doing. The "FID" column shows the multiplier actually being used for each core/thread; CO% is the load or utilization per core/thread.

The current version of ThrottleStop is available here -- ThrottleStop.zip - [email protected].

this pic is taken when you are using 920xm i believe?

btw revelator, how does i7 920xm @3.2ghz compared to i7 920 desktop @2.86ghz? will the mobile processor better?

Unless you have increased the TDP/TDC settings, you cannot actually use increased multipliers even though you have raised them. For example, even if you set a 920XM to 24-24-24-24, it can't operate at those levels because the 55W TDP only provides enough power to operate all 4 cores/8 threads at about 17.5x. To get 24x across the board (3.20Ghz) requires about 82W, so set TDP to 82W and TDC to 72A. To operate at still higher settings requires more power, but that brings with it more heat and greater risk, so stay at 82W max initially. That is screaming fast.

Edit: if you set multipliers to something like 28-27-17-17, and run a single or dual core app, then you should get all or most of the benefit of the increased settings because only a portion of the CPU requires significant power. Just set, run it and log the results in ThrottleStop. It wii show you exactly what's happening.

also how to set or change the tdp and the tdc part?

Right clicking on the main screen brings up this window. Turbo Power Limits = TDP/TDC. Turbo Ratio Limits = multipliers.

The Revelator do you have a es 920xm or a retail one?

Since i might buy a 920xm es from ebay to upgrade my 720qm
(my laptop has not even shipped lol)

The other thing im afraid of is the throttling issue..

Must have been a bad batch. There are a bunch of ES 920/940's in use here and particularly in the Alienware forums with complete success. You occasionally see some "pre-final ES" or similar nomenclature for sale on eBay. Those should be avoided completely. Laptopmonkey and ShirleyFu seem to be the preferred suppliers.

There is no practical difference between retail and OEM processors; OEM's are just those that are sold installed in a new computer.

Do not buy chips advertised as "pre-final" ES. There is no such thing. An ES is an ES; a pre-final is still a development chip.

If you buy from the reputable suppliers, you'll be OK. Before buying, post a link to the one you're looking at. There are plenty of members that can advise you.

i havent seen a review of a 470 or 460 yet so its hard to tell; but in notebookcheck the 460 shows lower benches than the 280/285m. it could be the dx11 replacement of the 260m
    my psu is 120w
i dont have a kill a watt so i cant measure actual power consumption

If you don't plan to overclock your machine, and you don't run benchmarks like prime 95 and Pcmark vantage at the same time your 120W supply is absolutely fine for your use.

    Hello,
I have the Xxodd XNi860Cu laptop, with Core i3 350 processor, 2x4GB RAM and the nVidia 285GTX. I have Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit installed (legit, school license from the school I work at).

When I first installed it, it was very unstable. The computer would hang randomly when using internet explorer, when gaming, when doing nothing at all, etc. I used memtest and it gave a lot of errors. So I removed one of the dimms and started testing again. 1 dimm was good, one had errors.
So I kept on using my laptop with 4gb ram and it worked a lot better! I think without once hanging (but I'm not sure anymore). The other dimm was returned and after a couple of days I got another one. Installed the other dimm and the hanging and rebooting was back! Ran memtest again. After a couple of hours of testing and retesting it had 6 runs without problems. Seems the ram is okay now.
Sometimes I boot my laptop and as soon it gets into Windows 7 it reboots. So it can't be too hot I guess. Maybe power consumption problems? But then again, what power problems when it's just booting?
After the first reboot I can get hours of playtime in Adobe Audition and Adobe Premiere Pro and Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Then all of a sudden it hangs in CoD MW2 when loading the map in a online game. The screen goes black and nothing responds anymore. I have to hold the power button till the laptop goes out and reboot it. Sometimes it all well again for a couple of hours and sometimes it's just the beginning of the troubles. It starts hanging in Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition and CoD and I have to reboot over and over again.
Last night I had uTorrent downloading a 720p mkv. Nothing more. And when I woke up this morning the screen was black again and the torrent was only at 65% when I rebooted the laptop.
Does anybody know what could be the problem? Powerconsumption? Bad bios? I have a desktop pc that also rebooted, but it was every hour precisely, and it was a bios problem. Bios updated and no reboots ever since. That was months ago.
PC wizard tells me I have the Clevo CO W860Cu motherboard.
I couldn't find a bios update for the Xxodd XNi860Cu (but maybe I'm just too dumb to find it) and googling for Clevo W860Cu bios doesn't help either. The Sager NP8690 seems to be the same notebook, but is it so much alike I can flash my Xxodd bios with the Sager bios? I found the .16s bios for the Sageer.
It's an ISO file of 6MB with nothing in it, so it seems when I open it with Winrar.
Just burn it to a disc and hope for the best?

Aaarrgg! Just tried to watch the downloaded 720p mkv and it froze up with a black screen twice on me after about 20 mins. So I'm giving up for now, just gonna watch the movie on another pc.

RJTech says they're expecting the 470M at the end of this month. I don't know where you got the information of the 470M being released at least for Q1 2011.

My temps while playing the mkv are visible here:

and after pressing the M button (Silent Mode) it's this:

Detail: Pressing the Silent Mode button makes my proc go to half speed, as you can see in the screenshots taken. But my laptop starts to make MORE noise, like the fans are really stressing it to keep it cool! Also: going into this not so silent mode doesn't help, it still freezes up.
