Well.. I already had flashed the normal .16 bios when I flashed the EC from .10 to .11 and it worked..

And I got my 920xm es together with some arctic silver 5 thermal paste.
The temps on stock are same as my i7 720.

After some testing with throttlestop I got dual core turbo mode at 3.5 ghz its really nice

But with multipliers at 17 with 4 cores it throttle's back at 80c when im doing 3d rendering.
I tested this also with prime 95 and with that program it doesnt throttleback i got temps up to 86c so I'm kinda confused on what the problem may be..

Ok.. i fixed my dvd drive by manually opening it and after that it worked just fine..

I agree, except This is what I did and it worked fine. I wouldn't post stuff on here if I knew it would brick your laptop.

It’s a long read, either on this thread or the 8760 thread. But it was talked about in several posts by people that do know what they were talking about. You and chaos just got lucky that you didn’t brick your units. No need to dismiss what I am saying just from your limited experience of flashing your units.

Tell me in a few sentences what was said (I dont have time to read through the long read)? I may have been lucky...but for future reference I'd like to know what I need to do to not brick it. What's the difference between the EC file and W file?

Well.. I have flashed lots of biosses and 1 time I had to reinstall my windows, so I know there is a true risk of bricking the laptop or killing the windows installation.

Does anyone have when booting windows 7 a black screen for 2 minutes and then it just boots like normal?
My brother has the same on his desktop with totally different hardware, so I know its a software problem.. but at google I cant really find a solution..
    Startup repair didnt help either..

You're not missing out on anything beyond 258.96 WHQL on a G92 card lest you are playing any of the new games listed in the change logs.

Have you noticed any other negative side effects to going with the 261.00 driver or is the only thing the inability to adjust the brightness?

Does anyone have any tricks to stop the GPU from downclocking when on battery? (GTX 470M in my case, but any information will really help)

    Droping the GPU from:
    535 Core
    750 mem
    1070 shader

    to:
    73 Core
    162 mem
    147 shader

is quite extreme... I call it getto optimus technology :)

You could start off by reading the first post of this thread. I basically outlined it like I read it, but again it's bared in one of the two threads, I can't remember which one or how far back. The thread explicitly says the same thing I said about doing the EC before the W file, and I think they explain a little bit about what the difference is.

I highly recommend following Laptopvideo2go for NVIDIA drivers. The head mod updates the .inf files continuously. I wish I still had a NVIDIA card so I could keep up-to-date on LV2G. There is a very strong and knowledgeable community over there.

Why would you remove the wifi card for a cpu replacement?
I didnt do it, because there was enough space to remove the fan/heatsink.

And the speed increase from a 720 to a 920xm (also overclocked) is petty nice, I had it without crashing on all 4 cores to 3.2ghz but the temps got up to 90c so i turned the speed down.

Seeing that you have the 470m....can you run some benchmarks for us (3dmark vantage GPU score specifically) to drool over? Also, if you feel so inclined...overclock it and run the benchmarks again to see what the card is capable of!

I just cant seem to find any benchmarks for the 470m.....so if anybody has any sites with benchmarks let me know! :)

    Edit: nevermind...found a thread. http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/531695-gtx-470m-benchmarks-sager-np8690-clevo-w860cu.html

Well after having been a lurker on the forums for some time, I just wanted to post that I finally made a decision and ordered an 8690 from PowerNotebooks!

    15.6” 1920x1080
    i7-840QM
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5 (couldn't justify price of 470M)
    IC Diamond Thermal Compound
    8GB DDR3/1333
500GB Seagate XT NCQ Hybrid w/4GB SSD
    6x Blu-Ray Burner/Reader/8x Super Multi Combo Drive
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 Wireless Card

Hoping this will last me a few years of relative mobility for frequent moves. This is my first personal laptop ever, having always built my own desktops in the past. Thank you all for the great advice I've read over the past month!

You should have bought the cheapest processor and install yourself a 920xm from ebay ;)
Your system is identical to mine only you got the geforce and i the ati, and you wont be dissapointed by the peformance!

Can the geforce handle 3 monitors?
When I use the hdmi and dvi ports I can only have 2 screens active and have to disable one.

    Config:
    i7 920QM
    8GB DDR3
    GTX 460m w/1.5GB
    500 GB 7200

I plan to swap out the hard drive with the SSD, heard great things about the performance.

Also, looking for a good gaming mouse and I am all set for the next year with all my gaming needs.

    Congrats Sagars

SSD's do have a decent impact on notebooks in particular; up to three times the speed (depending on specs) than standard HDDs, silent, generate far less heat and consume far less battery power.

When 250+GB SSDs become a little more affordable i am going to go for one myself.

Thanks guys, I am really excited to try it out... its a huge upgrade for me. My last computer was an Asus A8 w/ T7200 and Geforce Go.

Have you guys heard anything about Pro-Star? They have been nice to deal with during the order process but I have been feeling paranoid about the quality of components they are going to use. I went with them because they were the only people with the 720QM as an option , dint feel like investing +150 for the 740qm. I would rather get a SSD Hybrid and the gaming mouse.

@Zalgradis: SSD's are great for the regular tasks you perform on daily basis and Mon - Friday its pretty much windows and internet explorer for me.

@bstapley: That mouse looks cool! I feel intimidated to even try... This is the first time i am looking into buying a mouse with more than 3 buttons! ;) For the last 3 years i have been gaming with the optical mouse which came free with the Asus A8js.

I noticed that my HD 5870 cant use 3 screens simultaniosly.. wich is really stupid because my old ati x1400 mobility could do that ...

No just the older motherboard. I do not have USB 3.0.

No his work is an IT company and all the sales guys wanted top of the line computers. So they made some sort of sales incentive to win them...and he ended up winning both of them. They did not come with the 460m (I purchased that from Rjtech separately and installed it in the one that I am keeping for myself).
