    @genocidew
    How expensive was it?

Would 150 watt be enough to archieve a 2.8 ghz like overclock on all 4 cores?
The 150 watt alienware ac i saw was like 30 euro's so.. :p

I don't think those issues are solved, I think it is more down to luck. Also consider that if I hadn't been using the GTX 285M before I tested out the ATI 5870, I would have been none the wiser about its louder fan noise due to that problem. Regarding the heatsink, many may not be aware that it does not sit flush or notice the higher temps.

The downclocking issues are still not solved as far as I know so you either use the clocking tool with a manual shortcut or a modified bios of some sort.

Weird, so you say im just lucky?

On the other hand i have quite some fan noise when it goes spinning at 38% speed and thats mostly on idle while gaming it goes up to 70%.
But the temps are fine 50c idle and 80c gaming.

Possibly since I have seen quite a lot of posts about those issues. Some did Mods to increase the pressure of the heatsink on the GPU to solve this problem and ended up destroying their GPU. I have only heard of this problem with the ATI 5870, never Nvidia GTX 280M or 285M. There must be some quality control problems with the heatsinks for so many to have the exact same problems.

Any W860CU here with the latest BIOS (x.x.16) and using the Hitachi Travelstar 500GB 7200RPM Drive? Does the HDD temps appear when using HWMonitor? Please confirm. Thanks.

Using GPU-Z 0.4.7 to monitor my fan speed I get 45-49% in idle, internet browsing, emailing, etc. Gaming StarCraft 2 on ultra settings at 1920x1080 the fan speed will jump to 70-75%. My temps are also the same as yours. The fan noise(pollution!!) while in idle is close to the fan noise when gaming, although you can tell that it's cranking at a higher RPM while gaming.

I think sometime in the next week I'll pop it open and double check my heatsink's attachment. I'd really love to have a quieter laptop. When my gf and I are watching something on the laptop at night, the fan noise really irritates me. But seriously, I love this laptop... the fan noise is the only con I can think of!

Let's get to the bottom of this fan noise and try to find a solution to quieter gaming laptops. :)

Still running the bios Sager shipped me two months ago (CALPELLACRB.86C.0000.X.0000000000 according to Speccy). Haven't seen too much discussion on the x.x.16... I'll let others test it to see if it warrants me updating. :D

Yeah, I think the 5870m has the best price/performance ratio on the market currently.

This is my first AMD card (ATI brand RIP) and the drivers seem all right. I had one bug where my resolution on my external monitor was not automatically scaled properly in Catalyst 10.8, and by 10.10 it was fixed. Everything else seems to be running smoothly. I haven't really played with overclocking or downclocking on this card like I used to (have to) on my NVIDIA GT 8600M, so I can't comment on that.

That is weird, I can barely hear my fan when idle and even during gaming, it is not louder than the game sound effects or music. When I tested out the ATI 5870, the fan noise was a lot louder though. It sounded like top speed during gaming and definately a lot louder than with my GTX 285M.

Maybe setting your fan to passive in the Power Control options in Windows 7 might help a bit.

Really it comes more down to personal preference. I would never go for an ATI 5870 again, after my heatsink not sitting flush and the stuttering in GTA IV with the Drivers, and the increased fan noise.

Maybe if I did not have issues I might feel differently. I would go for the GTX 460M because I prefer Nvidia Drivers, you have a lot of choice if you have a problem with a particular Driver and I am confident that their heatsink will not exhibit quality control problems.

Hey guys, I just purchased a new 460m for my laptop, and when i installed it, it's doesn't seem to be seeing that I have the latest nvidia drivers installed.. (260.99)?? when i go into device manager, it is only showing the "vga adapter driver" and not the 460m. What gives? Oh and before I made the switch, I updated the bios to the .16 version to make sure it would pick up the card.

Did you update to the new EC firmware version x.x.11 which was uploaded by Phektan just a few hours ago? It solved something regarding the new Fermi cards.

    Before I installed the card.

No I havent. I ended up going to sager's website for driver downloads and found one that worked. It now is working correctly, but I cannot update it to the 260.99 posted on nvidia's site. As for the EC firmware....could you provide a link to it? Thanks!

That could make a difference because when you install the Nvidia Drivers, I think it configures itself for that specific card.. When you do a new GPU install, that configuration is no longer valid. Maybe I am wrong but I had to reinstall GPU drivers after new GPU installs before. As I said, I could be completely wrong though :p

Unfortunately the latest driver 260.99 on the laptopvideo2go does not have the modified .inf yet. Have you downloaded the latest driver from Sager, its dated mid October, so it should be somewhat current. (Not sure what version it is, they use some nomenclature that does not follow Nvidia’s numbering scheme).

It isn't terribly loud, but it's audible. It's more "white noise" while gaming and watching something. It certainly isn't louder than game sound effects or music, but it's present. I'm not sure if that make a whole lot of sense or not.

That's a good suggestion, I went ahead and set it to "passive". No immediate changes noticeable, but I'll report later.

That's interesting that the GTX 285M is noticeably quieter. It's too bad that the 5870M apparently generates a lot of fan noise, otherwise it's a stellar card showing no signs of struggle.

Ya that's the one that I have. It is working so that's good, but it's not my favorite driver by any means.

So...dont take me as an idiot guys.....but what the heck does an INF file do? Forgive me for not knowing.....I'm all about android phones and can hack anything on them, but I'm fairly new to the whole modifies VGA driver arena.

Some people edit the tables that control the fan percentage thresholds and then flash that to the card I think.

nah, the inf file tells the driver what hardware the driver can install on and how to install. Hence editing the inf can get drivers to install on unsupported cards and install as different cards (eg install quadro as geforce)

Oh ok makes sense! Is there some sort of guide that explains "how to install a modified INF driver" that you could point me to? I'm sure I can find about 2000 guides myself, but sorting through them all to find a decent one takes a lot of time.

Download the driver and .inf from LaptopVideo2Go. They package the driver as a .zip file which you will unzip and drag the modified .inf in to replace the original .inf. Then run the setup found in the .zip. LV2G also trims a lot of the fat from the drivers, for example PhysX is excluded. If you use a program that utilizes PhysX then you can download the standalone directly from NVIDIA.

    Hope that helps.

With the .16 bios my ethernet doesnt work properly i have to turn of the router in order to make it work at every restart.

With the mysin .12 w870 bios it does work but then the dvd drive wont work..

Does anyone has a fix for one of these?

I would try the .16s bios from Sager's website located here:

    http://74.212.252.103/Sagernotebook/misc/869bv116s.zip

Then update it to the new .11 located here:

    ftp://cftp.clevo.com.tw/ALLBIOS/W8xxCU/W86CU_EC11.zip

Well, I was doing some reading and found out that the Sager .16s vs. the Clevo .16 are the same exact thing (from what I can tell) with the only difference being that it will say "Sager" when booting rather than "Clevo."

That being said, just flash the Clevo .16 bios ( W86CU_BIOS16.zip) using your USB drive and then flash the .11 update.

It probably wont help, but it was worth a try. :)
