is it me or is that there's a HUGE amount of ram for laptop cards compared to desktop ones? like, the mobile GTX 460m and 470m get 1.5 GB, whereas it's only like 768/1gb for desktop GTX 460 and 1.25ish GB for GTX 470?

hey glad to hear you got the RMA :)
i recieved mine today in morning and im waiting to instal the OS on it, oh i cant wait to start it :D , but there is something that freaking me out, in the left fan output there is this copper slides but those slides are kind of bended in the end in a strange way and i dont think its suppose to be like that, anyway i havent used the laptop yet so i cant say for sure if it does have any effect on it or not, i will post a picture for it after a few hours when i come back home since im at the university now.
    anyone had somthing similar ?
btw sagars24 dont leave clevo side, take it from someone who know :D (at least for now or wait until i get mine started and if the fan thing started making trouble you will be hearing me ing all the time about clevo products :p :p :p )

Thanks bstapley and sagars24! Bios has been updated to the most recent one already.

One of the resellers told me that the heatpipes won't fit in the old revision. Did you have to build something by your own or did you use the original pipe from the GTX460M or even an old one from 280/285M?

I don't know what the reseller is saying but when i bought the 460m, It came with it's own heatsink that fit perfectly in the laptop. The 280m heatsink wont fit the 460m.

The only reason why Clevo and it's partners are putting out a statement that the GTX 460M and GTX 470M will not work with the original W8x0CU's is to discourage upgrading the GPU as a separate part in favor of purchasing a new notebook. The supply of the new GTX 4x0M cards during the time was also a factor, but it's ultimately a business maneuver. Why do you guys think that the GTX 480M works just fine on the original W870CU? As mentioned already, all the notebook needs is the latest BIOS and the heatsink that is tailored just for the card (to fit the new circuit layout) in order for the new card to work properly. Period.

Purchasing through certified Clevo distributors, all graphics cards that are bought for Clevo notebooks come as a kit with the heatsink and the necessary mounting hardware tailored for the specific notebook model you bought it for.

One bent fin isn't going to affect cooling performance; your fan is blowing most of the exhaust through the right side of that radiator, not the left. However, aesthetically, that looks fugly.

just checked the previous posts and the talk of buying 460m's without a heatsink/mount was from an ebay seller.
    no wonder.

as to the beauty side nah its not easly seen; i had to use the flash light and add to that i got a hell of a phone (N900), also this notebook isn't excatly what would i call beautiful or even looking good so either way we are not on good terms with beauty :p :p

Babyhemi mentioned in the 470M thread that there has been problems reported by Sager when using the 460M/470M in old revision (without USB 3.0) W8xCU's. He stated that they do work with the W8xCU's as long as their BIOS is updated but Sager reported some problems but was not specific on what those are.

    Can anyone confirm?

The only problem that I have experienced was the lack of driver support for the Clevo/Sager cards....meaning that you are going to be hard pressed to find a driver that will just install without any INF modifications. However, I've also read that Nvidia was aiming to fix the problems by end of year. Other than that, you shouldn't have any issues.

Easiest way is to run GPU-Z and click on the little camera icon at the end of the BIOS Version box (red box below). Select "Save to file", name it 470MBIOS.rom and save it to the desktop or other convenient location.

Then upload the file to a file sharing site (an easy one is UPShare.me), copy the Forum link address and paste the link into a forum post. That's it.

I wouldn't do that. I did that on my D900F and GPU-Z gave me a corrupted BIOS dump. NvFlash is the way to go if you want a working BIOS.

I'm not going to use it, just want to look at it. The NvFlash method is certainly superior, but considerably more complicated to use for someone not familiar with flashing or copying a vbios.

Have you guys found the solution to this yet? I'm experiencing the same exact problem with my W860CU and this came from a fresh reformat of Win7 x64 with all latest drivers and no programs installed yet to ensure that this is not software related. After a fresh reformat, I did not experience this for about 1 week and just a few mins ago while I was just surfing the Internet, the screen suddenly became frozen white and then after two mins. it started flickering with different colors (green, purple, etc.) until it flickered green only for 1 min. and then the power of the laptop suddenly went down.

It sure is a hardware issue and like Soviet suggested, not (just) related to the GPU, CPU or ram. Even though it might be expensive, you should send in the laptop or get RJTech to send you a new mainboard so you can replace it yourself and send in the old - obviously damaged - mainboard. My laptop is now with my reseller, hopefully they will replace both mainboard and GPU which should fix this once and for all.

Did they agree to replace the motherboard? RJTech is the hardest reseller to talk with. They don't even believe that this is a common issue with W860CU users.

That's what I was thinking too, but it only shows .95v. Here is the actual email from the guy at NiBiTor:

"We need a readout of the voltages of the different
operating modes (2D, 3D, etc) which you can get from several software."

So...although gpu-z works, it only shows the .95v.

Haven't heard anything from them, yet. Will post here once my notebook gets back... At least there are a few people having this issue now. When I first experienced the problem, nobody had posted anything about it anywhere. And not everbody will post this issue, since it happens randomly and not frequently, quite some people will just accept it and others don't visit this forum.

Hey guys, a little off topic, but the new Asus nvidia drivers(265.66) seem to work very well! My idle GPU temps are about 37C where as before they were in the mid to high 40's! I'm also getting pretty a good performance increase in games as well. Anyway...just wanted to share. :)

Still no update for getting the voltages for the 460m either.... :( I'll keep you posted with how it goes with the NiBiTor guys.

I'm new here, I think this is the best place to post. I'm planning to buy a laptop and it will definitely be a w860cu so there's no need for a thread asking for a suitable laptop! The owners are the best to answer my questions regarding the w860cu

1-What's the major difference between the SAGER NP8690-S1 and SAGER NP8690, the difference in starting price is $400 in xotic pc

    2- Processor:
My budget (not fully determined yet!) may allow me to buy the i7-840QM (+$465) but I noticed (in many sellers) that the i7-940XM is +$990. Is there a reason for this big difference  If this was the beast ( i7-980X Exreme Edition), I don't mind if it is +$1000 because it's really a beast. But the 940xm, is it really worth it? :wideeyed: (N.B the 980X Extreme is only +$850 in Sager NP7280, which makes things more confusing)

3- As clevo/sager owners; what do you think of Asus. Did it become just another Dell/HP/Sony. I'm referring to prices compared to Sager/clevo.

4- I looked for many sellers and it appears that xotic pc is a very good one. Does anyone know a better seller? I want it delivered to the UK.

Edit: last one :D, is there a good time for buying (i.e sell)
    Thanks in advance

    1) the s-1 vs just the regular 8690 is just an upgraded 8690 for less $. Basically it's a configuration that you could choose on the regular 8690 but it would be $1709 vs. the pre-configured s-1's price of $1589 (same specs).

    2) If it were me (and you couldn't wait for 2 months for the newer sandy bridge procs and next gen graphics), I would buy the 740qm and then upgrade to a 920xm or 940xm down the road when they drop in price. With the newer processors just 2 months away, they would most likely drop their price heavily. The difference between the 940xm and 840qm is basically the ability to have unlocked multipliers....meaning that you can overclock it and a higher speed.

    3) I actually used to own an Asus g51 which i thought was an excellent computer. Honestly, you wouldn't be disappointed with an Asus. However....now that I've owned a Clevo, I feel that the build quality is superior.

    4) Sorry....I'm not too familiar with all the different clevo resellers. The one thing that I do know is that Xotic PC is an excellent company.

If it was not an immediate need, I would say to hold off buying a new computer for a couple of months until the new sandy bridge procs and GPU's come out. Hopefully this helps!

    1) GTX460 VS GTX470
    2) I would recommend not spending a whole lot on the processor. Some people might disagree but I tend to always be on a budget and can get more performance by utilizing the $$ elsewhere. I would highly recommend getting the Hybrid HD.
    3) My previous computer was a Asus. Really good computer. They make good computers. But the build quality is a little superior on clevo. Not just the build quality the screen on clevo is really good compared to the g53. The g53 does have space for 2 HD's so you could have a SSD and Spindle HD. Clevo also is really easy to upgrade. I have a i7-720 and prolly will get the fastest supported CPU in 6 months when they prices fall and upgrade my GPU if the GTX580M is supported, cant do that with asus , you will void the warranty.
    4) Look at pro-star, they tend to have the best price plus they have a coupon code which will give u $30off, let me know if you want it.

I mean there is never a good time to buy. But this is how tech is, you wait for 2 months then might aswell wait for a few more weeks after that. Buy it when you need it.

The 470 can go on both, the normal and the s-1. As for the price, I matched the starting specifications of the s-1 to the normal 8690 and there was no difference!
Thank you all for your replies

Waiting for price drop is a good idea but regarding the sandy bridge processors, I think I will face the same problem>>>> budget

I might do that. In addition, your post just confirmed what I was dreading, the W860 has a space for only 1 hard drive , I think the biggest Hybrid is 500GB, that's really bad. Maybe there will be bigger hybrid drives in the future. Thanks for the pro-star link, they are really good.

If you have received your W860CU/NP8690 after January 2010, there is a good chance it will work. It doesn't necessarily have to have USB 3.0.

    Hi guys,
I've had my w860cu since around Mar/Apr this year so have the ati 5870, just wondering if there was ever any developments to get powerplay working?

If anyone has a custom bios or has installed another manufacturers vbios over the default one to enable it?

I have had a look and can only find old info about it not working, just thought I'd see if I missed a golden thread where someone had a breakthrough. ; D

The saying Clevo says is it 'may or may not work'. It's not that your system would not boot or enter windows. With the latest bios it should recognize the card. The thing is the card may not fully perform to it's potential.

Thats funny that you metion the prices will fall in 6 month,
A month ago the 920xm es were on ebay. I bought one.
And when I look now on ebay the cheapest is 100 euro more expensive then the one I paid for. I paid totally 289 euro's and now the're 380 or 500 euro's, altho they may be oem ones and not es but still they preform totally the same.

I swear Processors / computer parts in general are like stocks. In the short term they may go up in price, but over time, they will come down in price.

The information that we get from Clevo on certain subjects like this one is vague and not specific. Some information is clear and to the point and others are like this matter. Sorry... :(
