    Hi guys,

due to shortage of stock etc. I am still waiting for my W860CU with Geforce 470m (ordered on the 30th October 2010).

I was a little concerned to hear a few posts back that the geforce 470m has been phased out as an option..... does anyone know why this is?

Is it about to be superceded by a new card / chassis? Has the card had a poor response due to stability / performance? Or has it just been unpopular due to the relatively low price to performance gain over the 460m?

If anyone has any info please do let me know; i'd like to do something before i finally receive this £2000 machine..

    Thanks, and happy new year!

    hey jyokota

try pressing the power button for a while and never release it unless the machine is on (a while is like 10-20 sec at most) and it should work

i dont know about the real reason but according to XoticPc dudes the 470m was doing really really well in performance and in sales so that should answer a few of your questions and according to him and to most of the tech savvy in NBR its gonna be a rebadging meaning it will be released with a brand new name 485,570,580,585 and that is a thing nVIDIA usually do, so pick what suits you :D and wait to see the right answer :D

Try installing it. If it installs then you don't need the modded inf, if it says no compatible hardware then post back here again.

    @Neol

I just downloaded the official clevo 485m driver and un-zipped it and ran the setup. It installed just fine. It's nice to have brightness control back! :)

Here's the link if anyone doesn't feel like searching:
    ftp://ftp.clevo.com.tw/X7200/VGA/GTX485M_64.zip

Hey guys, just wanted to chime in on a fairly inexpensive fix to the crap sound from the audio jack.

I went to a local computer shop near where I live, originally looking for the Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! USB soundcard

But they only had the Sound Blaster Play! soundcard

Needless to say, it completely changes the sound coming from this beast. I'm only listening through some $30 earbuds at the moment, but the bass is well pronounced now and the overall listening experience is 100x better. The sound comes through great on my external speakers as well.

I'm expecting some Audio Technica ATH-M50's in the mail today, so I expect it will only get better - much better. For over a year I've been pretending the sound isn't that bad, but jesus is it awful after comparing it.

The one I got was only $25, I think the X-Fi one is like 10-15 dollars more, but I'm satisfied with these for now. Highly recommended for all W860CU users!

Afaik both the xfi and the play are actually software solutions that enhance your laptops builtin sound. As such they do eat up some cpu cycles when doin so.
Just an fyi and ciiw of course

Yes, but it's more expensive than other options and the power circuit is not built for that much input and can take damage. Why would you need 180W anyway? Looks like the 6970M will get support in the W860CU and if you want to oc an i7-9x0XM a 160W or 140W PSU should be enough.

Wait. The 6970M will fit the W860CU and you should get that card unless Nvidia surprises us with good prices but that is not going to happen and the GTX 485M might not even get support for the W860CU. As only 75W TDP cards will fit your laptop you will not need another PSU. The 120W PSU you own should even be strong enough to support some 9x0XM overclocking.

BTW am I the only one who thinks the W860CU looks much better than the new P150HM that is about to replace it? Especially the new hinge design sucks, never liked it on the W870CU. The X8100 like design is much more classy.

Yes I'm sure :) Babyhemi was refering to the 470m if I'm not mistaken...and he has quoted Clevo directly several times saying that it "may" have problems. If you want the 460m, it will work fine...all you need to do is update the bios to the latest so that it will detect it.

I love it! No problems now...before they had problems with drivers, but not any more. I've been able to successfully overclock the 460m to achieve stock 470m performance (for the most part). I think for the money, it's a great card...it may not be the best out there but price and performance are excellent.

Sorry for being out of topic for a while, but this problem i have keep bugging me the whole month...

Can i ask you guys Sager NP8690 Owner: Do you have any problem with the Nvidia 3D vision?

I just bought LG W2363D, and it is claimed to be 3d vision ready. The problem is, i cannot use it to be my NP8690 LCD monitor for 3D vision. It keeps crashing when i try to run the setup wizard for configuring the stereoscopic 3D.

Anyone can help me? I am so desperate about this...

    My NP8690 spec:

    GTX 285M
    i7 740 @1,7Ghz
    4GB RAM

So my NP8690 came in today and I have a few questions...

Why is the boot-up time so slow? My 4 years old HP could boot up windows 7 in 30 seconds, but this laptop just sits at the "starting" screen than jumps to black for 4-5 minutes.

How are you guys able to read the text? I set the resolution to the native 1920X1080 and everything is so small. I even set the display settings to "medium" and i can still barely read anything.

Finally, are your desktop icons fuzzy? I installed google chrome and the desktop icon is all fuzzy- not sure why.

Also, is it normal for only the left fan to be making the most noise/air flow? It seems to me that the right fan isn't really doing anything which I find odd as thats the side that didn't come with the black disk covering the fan (which i removed).

    Thanks for your help guys!

hmm... i bought 8690 recently and i didnt encounter any of your problems, as to the long starting screen, i dont have it, mine fire up in 1 min at most, you should try to update the Nvidia driver it might solve it, as to the text it was one of my most hatred things in this laptop i wished if i toke the 1600 res, but the 1080 is a true beauty, i set the settings to medium but everything is fine now if its not working for you try the large xD, as to the icons i have never saw anything clearer in my life ^____^ but i dont use chrome so i dont know about that specific icon but the rest is wonderful, again try updating Nvidia driver, clean install and tell me what changed, hope that helps

I place order for W860 but didn't include Wifi card (it costs additional 40$). The laptop specs indicate that there is internal bluetooth 2.1 so I believe that there is also a default wifi card included. Tell me if I'm wrong 'cause I still have time to remake my order.

hehehehe thanks bstapley for the link, spared me the looking xD
@chiapet874: yeah you could try the one bstapley and also you can try the beta, but if i were you i would go with the 485m drivers since the 266 is not WHQL certified YET so its not 100% granted to not cause any trouble (or BSOD xD) but probably it wont, but just to be on the safe side go with the 485m since everyone here (me included) is using it atm.

@mikim: yeah usually it goes without saying that they include the stock one with it, but if you have more cash to burn then you can buy the intel one, but becareful sometimes it means that the notebook is w/o a wireless card but that with specific resellers, at what reseller you are making that lappy ???

Hey guys, I saw that Xotic has the 470m in the 8690 on their website. I was going to upgrade to either a 7280, or one of the new 8150/8170 models and sell the 8690. But I'm wondering if anyone has been able to get a 470 by itself in the 8690 yet?

Also if it's possible to buy just the 470 from one of the resellers or something, that would save me some money. The 8690 is still fine other than my 280m, it's just not beefy enough for me anymore.

i heard that most resellers would sell you the card alone but you got talk to them and see if they would because it wont be in the choice cataloge, i also heard that rjtech sell them all the time as a stand alone but i never tried them, one last thing from the tech savvy here i knew that there is some kind of incompatibility between the 460-470m and the older motherboards (the ones that does not have a USB 3.0) so you will need to check that too.

I will certainly try that... as soon as my laptop starts up haha...

I tried to reinstall windows 7 using the disk they sent with the laptop and even before installing the drivers from the included driver disk, the start up is very iffy. While installing the drivers, the start up also sometimes goes to "start up repair".

I don't get it, is this a hardware issue? When the laptop finally successfully starts after like 6 minutes, it runs very smoothly.

    :UPDATE:
I installed the new nvidia display driver, and it seems like the issue has been resolved! I also did another clean install where I deleted all the partitions. Thanks for the help guys!

What's interesting is that only the P170HM supports the GTX 470M. Not even the P150HM supports it, although it supports the GTX 485M. So if the GTX 470M is more difficult to fit into a laptop and the W860CU works with the GTX 470M it should also be able to house the GTX 485M, but we'll see.

You got a link? I'm curious.

    470M TDP 75W, 485M 100W.
W860CU has no dedicated VRAM heatpipe.
Maybe the P150HM lacks 470M support because of missing Optimus?
    Only guessing.
