I use my laptop for school and currently have no use for the nvidia gpu, which I assume is affecting the battery life. I've tried removing it from the laptop but from what I've read around here that won't work (lights were flashing, fan on full speed etc.)
Currently I am just disabling it (Device Manager in Windows/No drivers in linux) so that only the intel graphics are used. However it seems the dGPU fan is kicking on anyway (albeit low%), and it's still noisy.
Are there any other solutions to keeping the laptop running as cool and quiet as possible? What does prema bios do? (I keep seeing references to it here and there, afaik it is not available publicly).

Leave the drivers on, set the drivers to always use the IGP no matter what and let optimus keep the card in a sleep state where it uses an insignificant amount of power.

Hey guys, long time owner of an NP9150 here. Just got a message from Windows telling me my 256GB m4 mSata SSD is starting to fail so I'm looking to replace it. I'm having a hard time finding suitable replacements though. Must the new drive be SATA II and not III? I saw a random comment on here that said that, but I'd like to confirm it. Or if anyone has links to good replacements that would be great too.

You can use either SATA2 or SATA3 based mSATA SSD. We have some in stock so please check with our Sales Team.

Samsung released the 860 EVO in mSATA format too, that's a recent chipset with 3D v-nand so pretty nice. -
So I am having a heck of a time installing a new SSD. I own a Sager NP9150 which I bought from Xotic PC in 2014. It came from there with the M4 MSATA 256gb and a Seagate 750gb HDD. I've run it all these years with the OS on the 256gb M4 and storage on the Seagate. This past Prime Day I snagged a Sandisk 1tb 2.5" SSD which I figured I'd replace the HDD with. I also figured I'd clone the OS over to it and use it instead and save the M4 for extra storage. But I cannot get my bios to see the SSD whatsoever. I've done everything from formatting the drive to changing it to GPT from MBR, I've tweaked and messed with the bios repeatedly. At one point, it finally saw the GPT drive but after a reboot it was gone again. I've cloned my M4 multiple times to the SSD using Macrium and Easeus and it sees it just fine when it is plugged into my Windows 10 setup via usb, but the moment I plug it into the HDD bay, it's like it doesn't exist. I can't even get the SSD to be seen by windows when it is plugged into the bay, even though it works on USB. Plus, the HDD works just fine i the bay still, it's like the SSD just work work in that spot for some reason. I know this has to be something simple I'm missing. What can it be?

Have you tried a different cloning program?
-
Yep, Macrium and Easeus.
-
I think it is something in the bios, or perhaps a disk issue itself. But I have it installed in the HDD bay and it just won't show up on the computer or in the bios. I pull it out and plug it in via USB and there it is. I put the old HDD into the bay and it shows up just fine.

Have your u tried the clone straight from msata to 2.5" bay (not using usb drive)
-
I'd love to, but I can't get my computer to recognize or see the SSD at all when I put it in the bay. My last idea is the reflash the bios, but I don't even have a copy. It seems my computer does not see the SSD at all when it is plugged into the bay.
-
I even tried doing a fresh install, but the computer just won't see the SSD at all whenever I plug it into the bay. Windows 10 setup doesn't see it whatsoever. I can ONLY get the drive detected by the bios when I use the "UEFI Firmware Settings" button on the Windows 10 Setup Troubleshoot. When I click that, the computer restarts straight into the BIOS and it says the drive is finally detected under the BOOT menu with the UEFI enabled. But I save and exit and the SSD is gone again, not seen in the BIOS or in any subsequent Windows 10 installation efforts

What about a CMOS reset via unplugging the battery under the keyboard, I'm just spitballing now.
-
Well, I could never figure this out, I have no clue if it was my BIOS or the drive itself, but plugging it into the bay was a no-go. I've given up on it and am sending it back to Amazon. Maybe I'll try again around Black Friday or if I see another nice deal on a good SSD. I have to get at least 2-3 more years out of this NP9150, which should be fairly easy. I had a new MB put in in 2016 and all I'd like now is a larger OS partition, the 256gb M4 is getting mighty tight. Which was the purpose of wanting this 1tb SSD.

Samsung had some updated msata drives iirc that could be nice.
-
Not a bad idea, I'll look into that, I was hoping to take advantage of the SATA III the bay offers over the SATA II of the mSATA. but a nice new 1TB mSATA would still serve me well if I could clone over my current setup and get it for around $200.Last edited: Jul 24, 2018

A drive like that is going to be tested on the older platforms at least.

Just ordered one of these Samsung Evo 860 1TB for $267, no taxes out of CA to TX and a highly rated $10 Sabrent enclosure to make my new/old msata card sata compatible for cloning and storage. So, we'll find out sometime Saturday or Sunday if this will work out. Spent $100 more than I wanted, but I'm working 96 hrs this two weeks, so might as well get a treat.

So far so good, installed the new EVO 860 after cloning my install over from the Crucial M4 to the new EVO by putting it in the adapter and sliding it into the bay. Switched out the msata and it fired right up.
Then, in preparation for a future investment of a larger SSD because I still want to take advantage of the sata III the bay offers, I converted my Win 10 install from MBR to GPT using my Windows 10 PE, except for a small snag where it didn't see my OS (needed to enable the recovery partition) it converted quick and works like a charm.
Now I hope to eventually get a 1 TB (or maybe 2TB if the price is right) Samsung EVO 2.5 SSD to use as my OS and leave the EVO 1TB msata in for storage. I have no clue why my system just wouldn't recognize the first SSD I bought, the Sandisk, but it sees this Samsung easily and it even picked it right up using the 2.5 adapter in the same bay where the Sandisk wasn't working. Moving from MBR to GPT made the boot a little quicker, plus now it should be ready to clone to any sized SSD I desire in the future with no problems, if I even do that. May just do a clean install the next go 'round. But thanks guys for the help!Last edited: Aug 5, 2018 -

Hi, I recently installed a GTX 980m. It all went without a hitch and then I checked the BIOS tonight and noticed that it says the VGA card is empty instead of listing the video card. It used to say "AMD Radeon HD 7970M" but now it says "empty." I am using the Prema Mod version 2.15.1227. The Windows Device Manager identifies it as "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M" and I have not experienced any issues that I know of. There is a marked improvement over the AMD card. So, is there anything really wrong? Why is the BIOS not identifying the card? Thanks!

All is good so don't worry about it.

That string just detects the device ID against a little table, if it finds it then it shows the name in the table, if not it shows unknown. That's the end of it. It does nothing else.

Snagged me a Samsung Evo 860 1tb SSD today from Newegg’s eBay store for $127. So this will probably be my last upgrade to the ol’ NP9150 before I go shopping for its replacement later on this year. I’ll be hoping for another Sager, just thinner and lighter than my current one hopefully with at least two or three storage options. I could sacrifice the on-board BD drive if there that option. Again, not seriously looking just yet, just throwing it out there.

SSDs just keep dropping, it's great

While I didn't get a quote from NewEgg for quite that low ($147), I do see a price drop. Amazon has dropped their prices as well!

It would have been the msata version I'm guessing?
-
I guess I didn't clarify... I was looking at a regular 2.5" Samsung 860 EVO in either 1TB or 2TB size. Not quite mSata, but close enough.

No, mine I ordered was the 2.5” Evo SSD. It is a sale they’re running.

hi, did not you please try to use 16gb ram modules? I have two defective slots and two are functional. i want to install 2x16gb modules. do not you know how is the availability of prema bios on this notebook? prema does not communicate even though I already wrote to him and would like to try it.

Has anyone else had issues with the very latest Windows 10 update and losing the brightness control?

Try installing the latest igp drivers again.
