Finally sold my msi gt70 and pulled the trigger on a sager9150 w/ 680m. Here's hoping it was worth all the trouble.
-
Welcome to the club! My 9150 w 680m is on it's way from GenTech PC. Where did you get yours?
And what made you sell your MSI GT70? -
Xoticpc. Had buyers remorse.....ordered from newegg(huge mistake) and they wouldn't let me return it, so I took a pretty big loss. It really was not a bad comp. Just a little too big for my needs. Only thing ill miss is that 2nd hdd bay, but the msata seems like a viable option.

Hi guys,
planning to buy 1 unit of 9150 have one question; How's the temp of the 9150 during heavy playing games? Do I need to have a laptop cooler or the laptop itself can handle the pressure?
TIA -
Depends on what video card you go for. But for all intents and purposes, the temps are well within safe maximums from reviews.

The temperatures, especially with the 680M are very good.
-
hey I am new here
I am contemplating on buying the 9150.
which gpu should i go with 675 or 7970 ( wat abt the 7970 driver issues ? are they fixed yet)
and how is the keyboard in the 9150 coz iam buying this on a long term basis.
thanks -
Just got my NP9150.. Its been a day.. loving the laptop so far.. could anybody tell me the latest driver version for Nvidia 680M? Out of the box I got 9.18.13.668, My 3DMark11 is P5878 and X2022. I have seen people getting more than P6000 with out of the box setup. Any idea?
BTW, got the new keyboard layout (windows key at left side). Speaker is good for my test.. In headphones i was not getting bass, then changed the settings from built-in speaker to Headphones in THX setting and got some bass. Am not a audiophile but effect is good for me.. Compared to my previous Envy14, speaker is good.
While running 3DMark11 and sleeping dogs, i didnt notice the sound of fan at all.. -

Go with the 7970m. There isn't really any competition between the two. The new beta drivers fix the utilization issues of the old drivers, and the final 12.11 release will improve stability from the the beta. It's an awesome card. -
I would go with the 7970 over the 675 for sure. While the driver issue seems to be getting fixed, there are still issues reported on some games. If you can't be bothered with all of that, then go for a 675MX or 680M. Having said that, the 7970 offers the best value for your buck.

DX9 and DX10 are greatly improved with the new performance driver. Once the final 12.11 release is out, all games should be effectively fixed. -

For anyone that is looking at RAM, there is this deal from newegg
Newegg has the 16GB 2x 8gb Corsair DDR3-1600 for 63 bucks with coupon EMCJJJH45
Ad said they would price match with black Friday deals if it gets lower -
Wow nice find! Thanks for the heads up.
-
Upgraded BIOS on 06/2012 9150 and found that the "ec" part of the 2-part BIOS update remapps the windows key with the fn key (so you get the FUNCTIONALITY of the new keyboard layout, but the keys are transposed. So, I like this location better (win on the left side), but would like to pry off the keys and swap them. Are there any videos showing this done? Has anyone out there done it? is it as simple as a small flathead screwdriver under the key and twist?
Thanks!

Consider the 680M too. Sager put up the Special Edition which is their Black Friday Model which pre-reconfigured really nice including the 680M. -
Aw man Shouldve bought the np9150 earlier when there was still a deal on the free gt 675m
now ineed to stick with the 670 or pay an extra 100 lol
-
Yeah I'm super happy that I went with the Autumn Sale and didn't wait for the Black Friday deal.
-
Of coarse as soon as my order goes to phase 2 xotic puts up their thanksgiving sale. Basically my same build but with extra 8 gb ram, Bigfoot card, ic diamond, extra 250gb hdd space and for the same price......
-
i, on the other hand, am glad i waited. the config i wanted (with 7970) came out to be ~$180 cheaper than with the autumn sale. and the preconfigured P150EM/9150 with the 680m, 16gb ram, bluray and Killer 1202 for $1800 looks like a decent deal too, if you're into that
-
thescreensavers Notebook Consultant
^ My config is only $35 cheaper than the Autumn sale lol.
I pulled the trigger on the newegg deal I posted, 32gb of Ram here I go. I think Solidworks will like that heh. -
So it depends on a person's needs. As I couldn't afford $1,800 for my laptop so even if I haven't bought mine yet I'd still won't go with the Thanksgiving Special
PS. I believe the 750 GB HDD is SATA 2, not SATA 3 according to Sager website
-
I know it is. I plan on getting a large ssd soon. I have an intel 520 120gb, but I need an optical drive so an hhd caddy is out of the question. I'm hoping a change order won't take too much extra time.
-
Anybody using an msata for their boot drive? Is there a big difference between an ssd considering the msata port is sataII
-
I use a larger sata III SSD for my boot drive. I am going to use my Msata for a storage drive. In all honesty you will not really notice the difference between a sata II and a Sata III ssd for your boot. In the end it depends how much storage you need. Msata for a cache drive isn't even worth it with a Sata boot drive ssd.
Regardless. Use an ssd in either position for your boot. -
I did this the other day in less then 30 min and that's only because I had to figure out how the keys went back together.
Using very slight pressure continually moving around the key and the cap will pop off with two pieces of white plastic. Make sure you do not use too much pressure and break any of the small tabs on those white pieces since those are what makes the key function.
Once you have the keys off re assemble the white pieces. There are two small circular tabs that click into the second white piece and they form an X when looking at it from the side.
Put the white piece into the key cap and going from bottom to top clip the whole unit (2 white pieces and key cap) back onto the keyboard using slight pressure. -

It's good to use the mSATA as the boot drive if you have a regular HDD in the primary bay drive and the mSATA is large enough (120GB+) to have your OS and all programs on it. If you have a SSD in the primary you want that as the boot drive and use the mSATA as storage as its will just slow down your SSD otherwise. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Though to be fair you won't really notice the difference as an OS drive since small file speeds are more important and the SATA2 wont limit that.
-
You wouldn't happen to have a picture (or even better a brief video)? I think I can live with the annoyance of the key's labeling but would be really jacked angry if I broke the keys ..
Thanks! -
I am sorry no. I already took this apart once and have no desire to do it again. It's easy just use care and you won't break anything.
-
Guys, what is the latest drivers for 680m? Am getting low 3dmark score. Just wanted to make sure it's a software fault and not a hardware.

Run it with afteburner on the in the background so you can monitor clocks and temperatures, also coretemp to check the CPU.
-
I have driver version 8.951.6.0 for my 7970M, which is the version listed on Sager's website. Is there a more recent one? If so, where can I get it? I searched, but didn't find anything, so sorry if this has already been answered.

Hi I've been looking at this notebook for a while. All the reviews seem positive except they all say weak speakers. How do you guys like your 9150's? Any major problems? Thanks!
-
It's not the speakers, it's the sound that comes from the 3.5mm jack that's the problem. However, all you need to do is plug in a USB audio stick and the sound is fine. I guess there's nothing that's perfect

Yea Speakers are not something you buy a laptop for. No laptop sounds good. -
The speakers are pretty horrible. 2/10. They're not much better than a phone's speaker.
The problem however is not with the speakers themselves but with the audio card onboard (not replaceable) which means that even if you use third party speakers or headphones it still sounds horrible.
I found this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/680221-how-fix-sound-headphones.html
Which might help, but overall just buy a USB sound card.
I have to say that I'm getting really hard time getting used to the keyboard.
I came from a long line of lenovo T laptops and the arrangement is really weird.
Need to find a way to remap the home/end buttons and the fn/windows/ctrl keys are a MESS.
I might even consider buying the GT70 keyboard, the 100$ price is the only deterrent so far.
I personally seem to have some bad contact issue on the E and the W keys which occasionally drives me mad because I'm not a hard clicker and sometimes those keys just don't seem to register.
There is a talk going about the keyboard having ghosting issues but I haven't played any FPS on it lately so I can't indicate.
These are the only complains that I have for this wonderful beast so far. The price/performance is amazing.
The design is quite solid but I personally don't like the gap between the screen bezel and the base, it feels too antiquated.
The laptop is overall not as big as I thought it would be but it IS heavy and quite bulky. Not something I would buy to carry from class to class but it is a great desktop replacement and a decent workstation. Considering the fact that this laptop is gaming grade, the size and heft is to be expected.
For some the noise might be an issue. In general under office work/browsing the noise is really minimal and the laptop can barely be heard, however with a game running, the fan noise can be quite loud and and it is noticeable unless you're using earphones or playing music.
The screen is magnificent (the default matte one in any case), CPU performance (i7-3630) is blazing fast, 670mx GPU (not overclock) performs really well, a tad below my desktop 560ti. The temperatures register at 45-59c after a couple hours of intensive GW2 and Dota2.
As long as you don't need AA and ultra high shadows, you can play most games maxed out.
It's a great purchase so far and I don't regret it at all (so far).
The laptop is polished and doesn't look cheap, the only thing that gives the laptop away as a gaming machine is the backlit keyboard which looks great but I have some personal qualms with. -
I had the same problem with 2 keyboards for my P150EM... first it was the tab and caps lock keys, the second it was the A and S keys... now the 3rd keyboard that I have works flawlessly so I'm pretty happy and can touch type again. I'd advise to get the keyboard swapped out.
-
so you have a 670mx video card? how good is it? do you mind posting some benchmarks or actual FPS of games? please.... I wanna know how good it is..
thanks!
-
Tell me what to run and how can I test and I will run it.
Never really ran benchmarks before for graphics. -
hmmm... I'm not very familiar with the tools for benchmarks but can you give me FPS of games? like BF3 in ultra settings, NFS Most Wanted in Ultra and Batman AC in ultra settings? if you can add Cinebench and 3D Mark Vantage then it'll be better
-
thescreensavers Notebook Consultant
3Dmark 2011 and 3Dmark Vantage, they are free and easy to do. -
So it was raining really hard the other day, and in the short time it took me to walk from my car to class my umbrella got completely soaked. I figured I could get it to dry off really quick by putting it behind my P150EM's fans for a period. What could go wrong?
Well, at the end of the period it was dry, but there were also two huge mats of dust on it where my fans had been blowing. I take it this means I need to clean out my fans...
Is there anything I need to do other than take off the back and blow some compressed air through the vents? -
Does the Np9150 suffer from keyboard ghosting with the stock keyboard or just the upgraded steelseries kb? Is the default sound card really that bad that even using the best pair of headphones still won't make a difference?
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
That should pretty much take care of it. Make sure to get it all out of heatsinks and fans, but don't let the fans spin with the air as you might damage them. -
Yes and yes. The keyboards have the same wiring layout, just different buttons so they are pretty much identical (though the labels on some keys are different). Headphones can't make up for a bad soundcard, just compliment a good one.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670MX video card benchmark result - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz,EUROCOM Racer 2.0 score: P3691 3DMarks
This is what I get on 3DMark11 720p (The only one available for free)
It bothers me that the clock is lower than it should be and that the GPU temperature was about 47-49c, the laptop was cool and the air blowing out of the vents was barely warm.
I'm using the 306.97 drivers and the PC is set on always nvidia.
How do I go about OCing the card and trying again?
Also, GPU-Z is crashing on me with a weird error, got me sort of worried.
Edit:
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm06/17001052
This is the 3dmark06 after I installed the beta drivers (310.61). Still, the GPU is surprisingly cool even thought the fans are VERY loud under stress.
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/5025885
This is the 3dMark11 again after the drivers, I thought they messed something up. Guess not
-
Thank you sir! now how about gaming FPS? hehe can you try BF3 on ultra preset, AC3 and NFS MW? thanks! hehe sorry for the bother sir just curious on how it performs...
-
Hello
I have one of these laptops and i ran the 3dmark 11 on 720p but i didnt think there would be such a large difference in score between the 680 and 670.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,CLEVO P15xEMx score: P6193 3DMarks -
Ran 3dmark11 with after burner and also updated the drivers to 306.97.
Max temp was 74. The score was P5876. Would having a normal HDD and i7 3630 affect the score.?
