If I am not mistaken, some games may be CPU-bound by such a strong GPU (both the 7970m and 680m).

I would recheck your desktop settings. Assuming the 7970m is approx equivalent to a 680m, both cards are about the level of a HD 7870. The desktop 680 should be quite a bit faster.

Edit: Sorry, his desktop uses the supersampling, which would explain the performance drop.

If I bought the laptop today (from XOTIC PC), would I bet better off installing new BIOS, or will it come with the best available? If so, which version has everyone had the best luck with?

The will normally have the latest BIOS preinstalled. It never hurts to check though to see if any other revision has came out recently.

Can anyone link me to the copper heatsinks I would apply to the CPU and GPU in my Np9150

I know i have seen it around somewhere but I can not for the life of me find it again.

Also do i apply them with heatsink to set them?

    Thanks in advance.

    NVM found them finally :)

smellon - I have a MSI GT683r with a chiclet style keyboard and my new NP9150 with a non-chiclet style keyboard. I prefer the stiffness of the NP9150's keyboard, but definitely prefer the chiclet style keys. They're spaced further apart similar to a desktop style keyboard and is far more comfortable to type on. I'll be trying to switch to the SteelSeries keyboard very soon on my NP9150.

Hutsady - If someone were to purchase one of these SteelsSeries keyboards from some vendor on this very forum, would it be possible for said vendor to modify the keyboard for direct installation previous to it being shipped to the customer?

    Question :

i realised i had so much spare parts ( cpu/gpu/ram/hd/wifi ), and am planning to buy a 150em.
Do you know if there are some resselers who can sell a 150em barebone without any component inside ?

Most Sager resellers will be willing to provide it with no RAM/HDD but Sager won't ship out with anything less than that.

Ty so much. Juste have to ask them if they have a 900p screen and that would be perfect ( if they can ship in europe ).

@derek : yeah that's what i saw, and was disapointed. ty for your answer.

Have a 2670qm, 570m, 8gigs, 500go, wifi card spare parts, and don't want to sell them.

I would try contacting a system builder like Mythlogic as sacrilegious as it may be for me saying so :) I believe they're able to ship barebone machines.

I have a 9150 with 7970M 3720 Ivy Bridge running to a 1440p monitor running Crysis 2. I have been playing the game for about 20 hours flawlessly (across about 5 or so sessions) and then all of a sudden I exited the game and came back to it after I ate and though it launches, the game reloads and I play for about 10 seconds, and I get "Crysis 2 has stopped unexpectedly" and need to relaunch. Same error every time now. I have not done anything since it was working (no win update, running 12.2, etc).

Any thoughts as to why I suddenly have this issue? Temps are at about 60-70 range.

So I installed battlefield 3 and ran it everything high no AA with HBAO and at native 1920x1080 resolution. lowest fps i saw was 43. lowest utilization i saw was 65% and it literally was for a breif moment. 99% of the time it stayed between 75% - 99% (and usually it was 80%+) this is good, yea?

also i would run it at ULTRA but i dont see a difference between high and ultra. so high is fine. to me its basically maxed. im quite sure the laptop could run it on all ultra + AA without the computer breaking a sweat

and correct me if im wrong but i remember reading somewhere that amd GPU's are actually better at handling AA with minimal loss in performance/fps than Nvidia GPU's. can anyone confirm/deny?

    edit:

I am also wanting to overclock my 7970m. I followed widely known method but after unlocking MSI Afterburner all of my clocks are set to 0 and I have no clue what to do from here

Just got my sager np9150 special edition in... I decided on the small upgrade to the 95% gamut screen... just installing windows on it is so vivid... its like going from my palm pre to the galaxy s 1. Can't wait to watch bluray movies on it... and to top it off, ups delivered early. I purchased last friday and got it today.

That special edition sure looked sweet on the order page though.

I'm going to be sending my p150em back to prostar and having them swap the 7970 out for a 680m.

I took a chan with the 7970, and it has great utilization in some of the games i play..but the 3 main games I play (one of them being hawken) they all get maybe 70% utilization max. im not having that crap. so im gonna bite the bullet and do what i should have done first. get the 680m and not look back

Going to send my p150em back to prostar next friday and have them swap the GTX680m in. I gave the 7970m the ol' college try.. and well.. no.

BF3 and some other games i've tried i get 80% - 99% utilization. cool! but the few main games I play.. i get a max of 60% utilization. Yeah i'm not having any of that ish. 60% utilization in HAWKEN? pffft. no way. 45% - 50% in FORGE? give me a break.

sorry AMD, i gave you one last shot and you had disappoint.

I really don't see why you're worried about the utilization. What's the framerate? I don't suspect the utilization will be any better with a 680. If you're only playing 1 game at a time what difference does the utilization make?

the more your gpu is utilized the more power its putting towards that game thus the higher your framerate. i want as high of a framerate possible. why should i, on a very intense 3d game and map be only getting 55% utilization? thats bogus. if it was at like 80% or 95% utilization i'd be getting higher fps and smoother gameplay. see?

i don't know if anyone experience this, after long hour play simcity, around 8 hour or so at Ultra setting with 680m, the game freeze on me, the only thing i can do is use task manage to log out, when i log back in, everything seems normal, but when i start the game, the game is extreme lag, i quit the game, check my nvidia gpu card and found out the gpu card is missing, GTX680M that is, only on board 4000 gpu is working, i just purchased this laptop not too long ago. after restart the computer, everything seems back to work. just wanta to know whats cause this and anyway to prevent this from happening in future, thx

Hello all, I am currently looking to buy a Sager NP9150 or Clevo P150EM (same model, different name), and I am wondering what do you all think of this listing on eBay: Clevo P150EM with i7 3720QM 4GB GTX 680 8GB RAM Samsung 256GB SSD | eBay There are a couple of concerns I have with it: 1. The WiFi card doesn't have Bluetooth 4.0 like the Killer 1202 does (and I was recommended by Hutsady of XOTICPC to get the Killer card if I am going to be doing wireless gaming, which I plan to do), and so I wonder if Mythlogic would replace that with the Killer card; and 2. the computer was purchased 8 months ago on a 24-month warranty, which means if I choose to buy it, the original owner may still have the information I need, such as any receipts or invoices regarding the proof of purchase. Generally I am concerned with buying used computers from eBay due to the warranty being an issue. My signature denotes my ideal configuration for the new computer and I hope that someone on here resolves this. Thank you!

ebay purchases are made at your own risk and you may want to check with the reseller that they allow the transfer of a warranty.

over all the build quality of the p150 is absolutely amazing. they keyboard feels great and i dont have any ghosting with my keyboard. Truth be told, the speakers arent THAT bad. they sound perfectly acceptable for laptop speakers. the screen is awesome and everything is working fine. I have had one BSOD but it was on boot up and it was bc code 116 and after a very little digging ive concluded that its due to the 7970m and its drivers as many other people have had random bsods due to the card and its drivers.

over all im pleased with the laptop but i will be sending it back to prostar so they can swap the 680m in. one of the main games i play is HAWKEN, i play it competetively and seeing 55% utilization on certain maps is just unforgiveable.

after all the game is optimized so far for nvidia and nvidia is working veeeeeeeeeeeeeery closely with adhesive and meteor entertainment to put hawken on project shield.

and yeah i knew that i may be doing this when i bought the 7970m. oh well. i took a chance and i lost. Unfortunately amd will be forever losing a customer due to their inability to get their monkeys working in their tech devision to make acceptable drivers. optimus has minimal problems. enduro..not so much. considering that even the 680m is underutilized in hawken because of it being an Unreal Engine 3 game and UE3 underutilizes gpu's, its double fold for the 7970m. underutilized because of ue3 engine and then underutilized further because of enduro. So sorry amd, you get the ban hammer from my life.

I second this. I bought from ebay and had an 8150 for about a week that I really liked, but the seller didn't mention a lot of broken or worn parts. I was able to get a refund and return it, but if I were you, I'd fork over the extra money for peace of mind and warranty

WIDI will actually require a centrino based wireless card to work. So you'll need to have an Intel branded wireless unfortunately.

Hi. I am about to get a NP9150 and I have two questions.

How bad is the keyboard, really? I had a very bad time with missed keystrokes on an Asus G73JH -the usual: am I typing wrong? should I press harder? no, definitely missing keystrokes- and I wouldn't like to relive the story. Have the stock keyboards got better or is it still a thing of luck, getting a bad keyboard or not? I might try to get the SteelSeries keyboard but I would love not having to.

I can get either nVidia 675 or AMD 7970. I just read the story a few posts before about the 7970 and Hawken but is it at least acceptable with other games, or is it just too flaky. Too may BSODS, etc?

Where can I read more about the current state of those two issues (keyboard, gpu)?

    Thank you

I had an asus g53sw that I recently handed down to my sister and my 9150 should arrive tomorrow. It generally comes down to person opinion, being chiclet versus non-chiclet style keyboard. If you'd like, I can post a review of the keyboard.

As far as the GPU, it will really come down to what you are willing to deal with and willing to tinker with things to unlock performance. The 7970m is a much stronger performer when it works (about the level of a 7870) compared to the 675mx (almost identical to a 560ti).

Thank you. Yes. I am very interested in your review of the keyboard. I don't care much for the feel, though I'm used to the G73, as much as I care for whether it works fine or not.

Same goes for the 7970M if it does work I'm willing to tinker around the issues.

i love the keyboard on the p150em. im an 80+GWAM typer and dont suffer ghosting problems. I thought i did at first but i realized it was my palm accidentally touching the touch pad and the fact that i use caps lock to type capital letters instead of holding shift. (for example to type a capital T i hit capslock really fast, hit T, then hit caps again really fast). its a bad typing habit I havent been able to get rid of.

but over all NO i have zero problems with the p150 keyboard. love it.

The keyboard issues pretty much have all been resolved. There were pretty common issues with the first run of keyboards but after the revamp they've all but disappeared. Every model, even outside of Sager, has a potential to see a bad keyboard here and there and that's as much as we see with Sager. Quick RMA with Sager to get it replaced when they do occur and the problems are gone completely. You shouldn't have too much to worry about.

My new sager np9150 has a bad gpu fan and/or gpu. Sounds like im calling XoticPC in the morning. It starts beeping with the upper left two leds blinking until it shuts down. Max fans does not cause it to power on either

Isn't it possible that the GPU isn't being completely utilized because it doesn't require 100% utilization?

Congrats on the build and your first post xf0rgiven!

I do like to point out the build doesnt come with Windows by default. If you have a copy to install once you get the computer that fine, but if you didnt realize it you'll want to get some OS on there.

7970M havent been having any common overheating issues I'm aware of. If you get it and they are a little higher the you'd like redo the thermal compound with something better like IC Diamond.

Unfortunately I would advise against getting the 7970m. Bad drivers and enduro issues that are STILL present almost a year later make it quite a bitter pill to swallow. I'm in the process of sending my p150em back to prostar to have the. Upgrade it to the 680m. Slightly faster card with even better drivers. Can't put a price on peace of mind.

When I'm playing hawken and I'm on one if the most graphically intensive maps and my gpu utilization is sitting at 50% and I'm getting 30fps that feels more like 15 due to the 7970m's horrible frame latency, I can do nothing but frown and turn off the game.

    Sounds like you're set.

There are a few issues still being mentioned about the 7970M and drivers but they have gotten much better since the 13.1 release. Just make sure to update to those once you get it. The Nvidia drivers are better at this time though, but as you've seen the 680M does cost more.

Also factor in that unreal engine 3 games don't fully utilize cards to begin with, you get Lowe utilization from that and even lower utilization from enduro and the 7970m's horrid performance in anything dx9.

Seriously only 45fps max in witcher? The ORIGINAL witcher? Terrible. And as stated before the frame latency on the 7970m is quite high leading to games not feeling smooth despite stable and/or high frame rates

    Seriously reconsider the 7970m
