So I guess my next question would be, why would Clevo/Sager put a different motherboard in the NP9130 (P151EM1) and the NP9150 (P151EM)? To be frank, it sounds like a way to up-sell your customers that want a better card/upgrade-ability. A good comparison is the Chevy/GMC. Chevy is generally cheaper, but built on the very same platform as the GMC, so why pay more for the same? Also production costs money, lots of it. So why make two different motherboards, when all that separates them is TDP? It just doesn't make much business sense to make two different motherboards.

Yes Clevo did design two different models. The one you linked on Malibals site is the same as the NP9150 which does have upgradable graphics and supports the 7970M. When comparing on their site you want to look at the P150EM (non SE) as that is built off the same chassis as the NP9130. You'll see the only 75W TDP cards available.
The rmotheboards aren't too different, its the components used on the motherboard which have a lower tolerance which results in a lower build cost, then a lower retail cost. I guess there's always two ways to look at it. They analogy you did, or you could look at it as they designed a model that could save people a few bucks if they are the type that never would upgrade the GPU

Lol I looked at the link again after I posted it. I seen that the non SE model was the NP9130. :D

As far as they (Clevo), thought that the people would never upgrade the GPU whom purchased the NP9130 (P151EM1), then why put in a MXM slot, why not make it proprietary like a Asus? I just don't understand why.....I guess to make upgradability to other 75W GPUs I would suppose. It's just that on paper when you look at both models, they look the same except for the backlit keyboard and the 180w AC PSU.

    Bad analogy warning.

A mini cooper s has more features than standard model. Honda civic ex has more features than dx. Not only features but also parts different. It isn't exactly mind boggling that a cheaper model can't handle same features as a more expensive model.

This marketing model is used by everyone, not just Clevo :)

The Clevo p151hm/em is geared towards users who aren't necessarily concerned with full fledged high-end gpu but still want good gaming for a fair price. What's not to get :)

Fair enough, I can see a price difference between the two based on what items are different, But the "core" still should be the same regardless. I know this will work based on what Hutsady said.

Just to prove that it is possible.

I view swapping GPU's in the 9130 like OCing. You can do, but it'll probably shorten the life of your system and void your warranty.

Its physically possible, but highly recommended not to. When the 7970M was new there was testing by Sager done to check comparability for previous models. Heres a link to that post http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...tes-clevo-hm-model-series-53.html#post8608602 its post #525 and you'll see what I'm referring to.
You probably missed it as your post a few back did say you've been gone for a while.

I get your point though that they could have used the same motherboard, but then might as well only have the NP9150 and there wouldnt be a need for the NP9130

Ok.....just looked at the newer GTX 670MX and GTX 675MX. Both look to be on a 75w TDP. :D Either that or I will wait till the GTX 760M drops, that should be 75w TDP.

    Hey guys,

I hope this hasn't been answered somewhere else but the search function turned up nothing and I haven't been able to google anything on it either but I was hoping for a bit of help in removing/exchanging my optical drive for a caddy. Namely, I'm not sure what needs to be taken apart to get access to it.

I'm not super tech-savvy but I've been able to upgrade the wifi card as well as switch my previous HDD into an SSD so I know my way around the machine relatively well I suppose. But when I got to looking at removing the optical drive, I found that it was protected/shielded both under the bottom panel as well as under the keyboard. I suppose I could basically just take everything apart in an attempt to access it but I'm not overly confident in my dismantling/"remantling" skills so would love some expert opinion. So if someone could help me out by telling me specifically what needs to be unscrewed or what part of the bottom panel needs to come off so that I can make the switch, that would be terrific!

    Thanks!

You can check the manual on the drivers disc which will give you instructions on how to remove the optical drive. If you can't find that disc you can download the manual from Sager's driver page here custom gaming laptops - Welcome to Sager Notebooks Section 6-11 will tell you how to do so. You will need a hard drive mounting caddy to mount the hard drive then you can put that caddy into the optical bay as you mentioned. Any 12.7mm SATA connection caddy will work. You then can take the bezel off the front of the existing optical drive and put it on the caddy.

I'm hoping that the 770M (or even the 870M) will be compatible with the P151EM; it seems that the TDP of #70M GPUs hasn't changed much for the last few generations, so it doesn't seem too implausible. Could be a nice upgrade in a few years.

Is anyone else having an issue with their audio going out on their speakers, but not the bass? This happens to me everytime I listen to anything that is blaring loud, which means I can only listen to things at 75% loudness setting or else I'll lose my sound. Sometimes I'll just be grabbing my laptop and moving it and it will do this. When I received my laptop, there was something loose rolling around inside but it stopped after I shook it trying to find out where it was coming from. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but this sound issue is upsetting.

On my NP9130 the two small plastic latches that hold the battery are broken. The battery keeps falling out every time I take the laptop out of the bag. I have never dropped this laptop or taken out the battery prior to this happening. I wish I had duct-taped the battery to the case since I never take it out anyway.I have taken it in and out of the bag quite frequently. I wonder if this is covered under warranty. I got mine through xoticpc.

This only confirms my original impression that sager's build quality is flimsy at best. These laptops are not meant to be taken to school or moved. They are strictly for gaming.

    Hi all,

I'm planning on buying the NP9130 soon, I've been reading lots of reviews and this thread, but I wanted to know from some owners if there's anything I should know before buying this machine.

Are there any upgrades in particular that are highly recommended (buying from xoticpc)?
The specs I plan on getting are as follows:
    i7-3630QM
IC Diamond Thermal Compound (This seems like a must for such a high end machine, anyone else think otherwise?)
    GTX 670M
    8GB - DDR3 1333MHz
    Remove All Branding
    750GB 7200RPM
    Total: $1119.01

That's looking pretty solid! We do also typically recommend upgrading the wireless card for a better wireless experience, better signal reception and higher throughput. If you have the budget, trying going with an SSD if you don't need all that storage space, the difference is huge in startup and load times.

If you had any specific questions, feel free to get a hold of me and I'll be glad to help.

Hi guys! I am planning to buy a Sager NP9130 from xoticpc and choose the 95% gamut screen and 670mx instead of the NP9150's stock configs. Well I've been researching a lot because my budget is too tight and I will buy this december so I removed the special promotions so as not to expect (goodbye 675m free upgrade and $100 free).

how great is the performance of the 670mx? based from geforce's website and from a thread here, the 670mx is almost as powerful as a 675m is it true?

am I better of for 9130 with 95% gamut (I'm a photo and video editor) and 670mx vs. 9150's stock configuration? because I won't intend to upgrade my GPU after all.

I really want to know how the 670mx performs so can anyone share their experiences with this card? thanks!

Hey Np9130 owners, i need one important info about the np9130 and would really appreciate it if you can help me with this crucial info. I'm about to pull the trigger on the NP9130 with the GTX 670mx and I want to make sure the keyboard does not have the ghosting issue. I play games that requires me to use Q key together with the W and D and spacebar basically any 3 combination involving the Q and W plus another key.

Can you guys give me a peace of mind about it and let me know? Thanks

I've had a friend go 5 years without reapplying his paste on his laptop. We took it apart one day to reapply that and it took a few rounds of cleaner to get everything off of there it was so baked on. So don't wait that long, I'd say a good rule of thumb is every year or two and you should be fine.

Can any of the np9130 owners try out their keyboard for me using Q+W+Space Bar and Q+W+D on the link below pls if any of you have time. All 3 buttons should light up green and press together and if it doesn't and it is only 2 keys, then we have ghosting issues. Thank You.

Is the audio really a letdown on the p151em/p150? I heard about horror stories on the speaker not sounding great then the solution is using earphones/headphones but then owners are complaining the soundcard sucks even when using quality headphones/external speakers and they only solution is using some kind of amp.

Can anyone shed some light into this horror issue.

Onboard audio just sucks compared to any halfway decent DAC. Tinny, no bass. That goes for both the speakers and the line out. Got a Creative X-Fi Go Pro refurb for $20 and it sounds tons better.

Hi, can anyone advise me in this weird problem?
I have a np9130 with stock thermal paste, but my laptop runs awfully hot, even when I'm not doing anything. Right now I have chrome open, and its idling at 145F, or 60C!
Its just sitting on my desk, not blocking ports or anything.Should I get a laptop cooler or should I take more drastic action? I think this is way too hot! GPU is okay, 43C, but my CPU is way too hot!
I wish I could turn the fans on full blast....

I would recommend a repaste of the compound myself, or make sure that the CPU heatsink/fan are clean.
