Anyone able to comment on the above?

Slightly concerned about the screen response times as details here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Schenker-XMG-P406-Clevo-P640RE-Notebook-Review.158239.0.html as otherwise this looks like a great build for someone who needs the smaller 14 inch form factor.

    cheers

We are finally at a stage where 2.5" SSDs aren't stupidly expensive, and you want them kicked out already? :(

Maybe when M2s can be had for under £100 for 500GB I'd be happy with that, but then I'm not one to use his laptop on battery power only that often, so the P640's weakest aspect is moot for me.

My XMG should be arriving tomorrow or Wednesday :D

The 2.5" bay does give that mass storage option and given the market this model is aimed at I think it's well served having one.

It's nice having a large SSD that you can swap into new laptops and be sure it will be compatible. Unlike the msata format.

That is why I would like to see it as an option what that space can be used for.

    1. 2.5" drive
    2. Optional larger battery

I don't imagine it would be too difficult to cater for the two possibilities. Find a way to squeeze a second m.2 ssd on the board and let the customer have the choice of larger battery or additional 2.5" drive.

That would be cool, can't say I've ever seen that level of customizability.

My XMG P406 arrived today, looking very nice! Lover how they included a USB drive with all the drivers on it, and I wasn't expecting the free Tomb Raider code :D

Will do a nice detailed review this evening.

So true... I remember paying $250 for a 128GB C300 SSD in 2010.. Now I paid £250 and got a 960GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD... Talk about price drop per GB... M.2 is far from matching this!

Well-said, very well-said. Furthermore, having an ordinary SATA slot provides alternatives to customers who want even more data and a cheaper platform of ordinary HDDs.

The P640RE is a step forward and backward simultaneously from the W230SS, let's hope they keep improving. The 970M is a nice deal.

Ok, maybe not super detailed, but here are my thoughts:

Good size and weight, heavier and a bit bulkier than my ultrabook, but way more powerful.

Screen is nice, deeper blacks than my ultrabook, but minor bleed on all sides of the bezel, which is a bit of a shame as my ultrabook is bleed-free. Also, the matte effect is a little bit grainier than my ultrabook. No dead pixels (woohoo!).

Had to update the drivers for the integrated Intel display in order for screen brightness control to work.

Runs a bit hot at stock, but undervolting in XTU to -100mv sorted this. Might try for lower, but happy with this for now. Stress max temps dropped from 90ºC to 80ºC.

Keyboard is good, though I need to get used to a longer palmrest and having a dedicated up arrow (my ultrabook as the up and down arrows merged into a single key).

Overall I am very happy with my purchase

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the model. Undervolting got a pretty solid drop in temps there, that's always good to see.

I have this laptop with an I7-6820HK. It's a big improvement from my last laptop!
I've only encountered two problems... The first one being that the speakers don't seem to work, but headphones do! The second is that when I open a game the fans just go beserk and the laptop sounds like a jet.
If you guys could help me with any of these, I would appreciate it very much!
I am also willing to do some tests and/or benchmarks if you guide me through the process!

With Skylake, Intel's ramped up the voltage excessively... You can usually undervolt by -50mV on stock voltage easily....

I've seen people that undervolt to -150mv... I guess you can say it's "factory overvolted" by Intel?

The stock charger is 180W and I would stick with that if you intend to use the GPU.

I would just bring the 150 watt on the go. i'd still use the 180 watts at home. I also have an extra 180watt adapter from my AW15 is that compatible too?

Just be aware that if anything happens on the 150W your warranty would be void, the AW uses a different tip.

Not sure yet, I've currently only done a few runs of Unigine Heaven and played MapleStory on it, haha!

Still in the process off backing up all the data in my main rig (which I am selling) and then moving my game SSD with all my Steam data to the laptop, when I can then try out some games (Borderlands Pre-Sequel would be good to test response times I guess).

Had a go on Borderlands and Shadow Warrior, didn't find any issues with response times personally, though I'm not sure what you mean by color fading.

EDIT - Ah, you mean brightness drop when the vertical angle changes too much. Yes, I noticed that when straight on, brightness is awesome, but say from 20º it drops off noticeably. Doesn't bother me personally, as the screen can always be angled to you correctly, and it is just a drop in brightness, colours stay fine, and you don't get the weird inverse negative screen affect like TN panels.

UPS just dropped her off...I fired her up and found out the screen resolution is 1080p not the 2560 x 1440 that was advertised :(

They can't get one with a QHD screen so I am just returning it. They have since updated the specs on their site to show the FHD screen now.

When you get the message that the driver isn't found, move the USB stick to another port and then try again. I had the same issue with a W230SS when I tried to install Windows 7 on it.

There have been issues installing windows 7 on modern BIOS structures in notebooks. There are various guides out there depending on how you want to install it.

Even with W10 i had issues, when i select the kind of installation if i choose custom installation i couldn't select the disk, i needed to choose the recommended installation and restart an then choose custom installation.
Out of these i haven't any issue, only enter my W7 key and the system activate automatically.

Hello! Just need some help here!
If I'm intending to add additional ram, is there anything I must take note of? The RAM has got to be DDR4 2133Mhz 260 pins, right? (anything else to note about the specs?)

Currently, I'm on 1 x 8gb, and CPU-Z states the manufacturer as Micron Technology (this is Crucial right?)
Is it recommended I get the same brand?

So picking up one of these from a guy on the forums. Looking for something lighter but can still play games, pretty excited to try this out now. Had 3 questions:

    1. How are the fans overall on this laptop.
    2. Can I install a 950pro without issues?
    3. Has anyone played The Division on this laptop yet?

Cooling on this model is pretty decent, nothing that runs too hot.
You should be able to install a 950 pro easily if you are doing WIndows 10. Windows 7 has more work involved in it though.
Division on a 970m should look pretty good on high settings.

Hello, I might be in need of a new notebook, and the P640RE seems a good candidate, but I have some questions; I currently have an Asus 11.6", the W110ER seemed the perfect substitute, but it's out of production, and so is the W230S[T/S/D], I was looking for a small one so that it would be more portable than a standard 15.6", but 14" is much more similar to that than to a 11.6", so how does it feel? I would carry it around all the time, and the one I have now is so much better in that regard compared to the 15.6" I had before that I'm wondering if I should just look for an used one of those discontinued models instead. Next would be, how likely is it that an update version comes out soon, like the ones the W230S had? And related to this, should I wait for a Clevo Pascal based notebook? It will still be at least months before mobile Pascal GPUs reach the market I guess, but the new feature those would bring seem much more than the usual generation changes, the main ones going from 28nm to 16nm and HBM2, that the wait seems worth it just so that I wouldn't end up with a "quicker obsolete than usual" machine.

Hi, I went through a lot of the posts but didn't find anything similar to my issue.

I have the metabox version of the P640RE and have had issues with the internal lcd not being recognised in windows 10. Everytime I sleep/hibernate/restart/shutdown the internal display turns off (goes black) and I must plug in hdmi/displayport to external monitor.

At first, I thought it might be a driver issue and I have clean updated multiple times (with DDU) to newest ones as of today but same.

I have reinstalled windows 10 pro a number of times and the issue also affects the UEFI bios screen, ie, the UEFI settings screen only go through external displays.

I am now thinking intel hd vs gtx970 issues and disabling the internal screen. If it is the case, I might have just received a dud but just want to check with others first before lodging the issue with Metabox.

Anyone experienced similar? Any help is much appreciated.

One of your partner shops, HIDevolution, shows your bios mod as an option when you go to purchase it. Are they full of it? I want to know before I pull the trigger on this laptop with this reseller as your mods have become top priority in choosing my purchases.

If you have specific requirements like that it's usually worth calling.

    Hi All,

Just got my p640re and after a few hours of installing Win 10 and updating, I took it home and then it would not power on. The power light came on, the two lights at the bottom left turned green, but there was no display on the screen at all and after about 2 minutes it would shut down by itself. I tried turning it on about 5 times, then tried connecting a HDMI cable with no luck. I left it for about 20 minutes, tried again and it turned on normally. Anyone seen this before?

It's been OK since yesterday but now I'm worried every time I turn it on.

You may have tripped the brick when you plugged it in, a spark can make the brick/machine refuse to deliver load power.

Did you try it on AC and battery.
