Good day,
Just got my Sager NP8640 base model this week.
So happy with it, clean install on SSD (windows 10), applied IC diamond
on XTU undervolted 160mV stable for 10 hours gaming
disabled turbo voltage to 35W
all cores still turbo at 3.1Ghz
stable in game.
temps were hovering @72C on CPU and @70C GPU on witcher 3
Any questions, ill gladly answer.

hey guys, just ordered my P640RE. anyone have an idea on how long xoticpc is taking to ship out stock configuration orders?
-
Yeah I tried both. It just happened again. I'm wondering if it has to do with the hard drive I put in, it's a 7mm one but when I screw it in place it doesn't sit perfectly straight and one side of the sata cable is touching the battery. Is there just the one screw to screw the hard drive onto the board?
-
that doesn't sound right. this is what you should be seeing.

basically, there shouldn't be a screw holding the drive in by the battery. what's holding it in is the sata plug and the drive strap at the other end of the drive.

Thanks for placing your order with us! If you need help at any point, feel free to reach out to me directly. I'm glad to help.
We'll generally tell you 3 to 8 business days from when the payment is processed. But lately, Sager has been on the quicker side of things for the most part. -

The above picture is a good guide
if you are unsure take a pic of yours and we can look at it.
-
OK so here are a couple of pics:
http://imgur.com/a/YmADu
The first one is how I had it installed because of how the sata port is positioned on the hard drive. The second pic I twisted the sata cable so the top of the hard drive is up, though it still seems a little off centre.
Could it be the hard drive itself? And would this affect booting up at all?Last edited: Apr 9, 2016 -
ok, for sure you DON'T want to twist the cable. doing that is going to put you at risk of breaking the leads. also, can you post a pic without the drive in it? just trying to get a good overview of the board section. cause ya, it definitely isn't sitting straight.
honestly i don't think the drive itself would prevent the system from booting but honestly, stranger things have happened. -
on another note, so i am trying to figure out where the 3rd M.2 is,
3x M.2:
WLAN Combo M.2 2230
SSD M.2 SATA / PCIe Gen3x4 (2280)
LTE or UMTS/HSPA+ Modem M.2 3042
as shown in the specs on the first post it says there is a 3rd one that is designated for a WWAN module. anyone have any idea where that M.2 is? because i am considering picking up an LTE module for my overseas travels.
Pat, would have have any idea about this? i was speaking with Matthew about it and he was surprised the system had that option. -
Well it hasn't had the boot issue since I twisted the cable and put the hard drive face up, when it was face down I did notice a slight gap between the laptop and bottom cover where the hard drive was which I had to keep force closing, I wonder if this somehow caused some contact issue causing it to not boot?
Anyway I might just purchase a recommended hard drive from the reseller so the cable isn't twisted.zacwhite15 likes this. -
interesting. by the sound of it you bought yours as a barebone? im just curious.
-
Almost, I had the reseller add a 250GB m.2 SSD and 8GB RAM. I already had this 7mm hard drive so was hoping to just use this, but I guess I should have just added the extra hard drive with them too.
-
Damn it I spoke too soon, it didn't boot up again today. I've taken my hard drive out to isolate if that is the issue. Here is a picture with no hard drive:
http://imgur.com/LKnGUMg
Edit: ah just noticed I have the hard drive plate upside down. Wonder if this contacting something on the board causes it not to boot?Last edited: Apr 12, 2016 -
its very possible. honestly at this point if its continuing to give you trouble your should probably reach out to your vendor to have them look at it. there might be an underlying issue that neither of us has seen.
-
@WindyJ any chance you could try to grab the model number for the panel? hwinfo should do the trick. i am really curious to see if i can find that panel online.

New forum member and overclocking/underclocking noob here
I just received my P640RE and I'd like to underclock it as some of you do. However, there doesn't seem to be any straightforward instructions on how to do so apart from "download Intel XTU".
I looked at the settings here (or click the spoiler tag below) and matched it but when I loaded XTU for the first time the only settings that were different were:
- Processor core IccMax: 68.00 A
- Turbo Boost Power Max: 44.00 W
- Processor core IccMax: 67.00 A
- Turbo Boost Power Max: 45.00 W

It's the adaptive core voltage you have to lower to decrease the core voltage, the values you changed are maximum limits, with the current not really limiting the stock frequencies your settings have it slightly faster than normal.
-
Got it! Thanks for clarifying that

hi ... im new user clevo p640re (siren sr14s in my country)
i have a problem with intel hd graphic when my lcd suddenly blank the it came back to normal with error message "intel hd has stopped responding and succesfully recover" anybody know what happen and what to fix it. thx -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
How long have you had it? If re-installing your intel GPU drivers does not help contact your reseller.
-
its already been 4 month since i owned it. i already contact them, but they just said to update driver bla bla bla and that didnt work at all. actually it doesnt disturb me too much, since theres no problem while im playing game. i just curious whats the problem and is there anyway to fix it. i already search the intel forum. and there are so many people with same problem, and not solved yet of course. hope i can find the answer here

ok. hi guys. I'm about to move on from my p34w and w230SD. is it still worth buying one of these? or holding out for something refreshed? does the p640re have any build problems? my w230sd was good but things started randomly happening. my lid on my w230sd started creaking. is anybody having any problems like this in their p640re?
Also should I pick the p640 re or the msi gs40 phantom? I know that machine isn't perfect either. but I'm leaning towards the msi because my w230sd problem/s I got a just 2 days to decide unless there is something else.
Thanks -
the P640RE is awesome. i have to say that. i love the machine. its solid, light, performs extremely well and is all around a good build. only caveat i have is i there is a mild screen bleed at the top corners, but its barely noticeable.
i undervolted mine to -160mv and it runs super cool and like a charm. i personally think you would be satisfied with the 640RE in comparison to the msi. plus, the who cool factor when you say to your other gaming buddies "its a clevo" is so much better than saying "its an msi" LOL. not knocking on MSI here btw, thats what runs my overclocking rig.

Hi all,
Does anyone have a rattling intermittent noise that sometimes appears from the left side (cpu side) near the fan? Is this normal?
I'm still not sure when it happens.
It's the i7-6700HQ version with a mx100 2.5 ssd.
Thanks -
Hey guys, I'm planning to get a P641RE on AVADirect but I want to know if this laptop throttles under some heavy gaming load (ie. Fallout 4 at high settings). Thank you.

Might want to check that the fan is screwed in properly, and that there is nothing inside the fan that it should't be. -
I would wait.. The 970M is almost 2 years old now and Pascal will be out in next few months..
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk -
I can't comment directly on Pascal, only to say that your option for the next couple of months is the current gen models.
Regarding build quality - the P640RE (XMG P406 if you're interested!) is a quite different machine to the W230SS and ST. It's thinner, has aluminium lid and keyboard surround vs plastic of the W230, better designed hinge assembly and so on. The build quality is far superior. We haven't had a single RMA of a P406 due to build quality and so don't let your W230 experience sour your P640 possible experience!
Compared to the GS40, the P640 has a superior LCD panel, better load battery life (slightly shorter idle battery life though), it's a bit quieter and cooler than the GS40.zacwhite15, ipwn3r456, TomJGX and 1 other person like this. -
Thanks for your reply. Yes it's screwed properly and has nothing inside. It's like a electric rattling. haven't noticed it while on battery only.
Hope there's no issue with power supply... -
Thanks guys to those that got at me in response to the laptop choice. I wont be following up on the gs40 because it was a one of price. plus XMG and your other comments or persuading me to get it rather than wait for pascal. Also one thing. whats the actual difference between p640re and p641re that I keep seeing pop up? Also can the screens be upgraded to higher than 1080p? like 2k or 3k? nearly bout to bite. especially as it has improved aesthetically.
edit: also I want to mess around with some older games at 4k 60fps. ( I know some of you guys are thinking don't do it) but I want to know what cables are required? I know the laptop has mini dp 1.2 port. do I get a mini dp to hdmi adapter that has 2.0 and then a 2.0 cable into my uhd 2.0 hdmi port to get 4k at 60fps?Last edited: Apr 24, 2016 -
the only primary difference between the 640 and 641 is the back panel for the display. one has a mean "batman" type look well the other (641) is more a business sleek style. i have the 641 and its gorgeous. with regards to the QHD display, well tbh good luck finding one. all the ones i have found are in 1080p. which is absolutely gorgeous. if you run into any issues with it your always welcome to hit us up in the forum here. i have personally become extremely familar with the inner workings of the notebook, especially the bios.Last edited: Apr 25, 2016Spartan@HIDevolution, sisqo_uk and TomJGX like this.

What tempatures are you guys getting from this laptop? I have undervolted it and repasted but still I get like 80-87c degrees while playing demanding titles like hitman (the latest) and Tomb Raider both games are played with the settings from nvidia geforce experience tool. I read the user review with tempatures in the mid 70s on full load with roughly the same setup as I got, so im just wondering if its too high...
On idle im at 45-50c degrees...Last edited: Apr 30, 2016 -

What thermal paste did you use? Just curious. What kind of settings do you have on the games as well? Turning on VSync can help lower temps since the graphics card isn't trying to go all out on creating more frames than necessary.

Hey Pat! I'm using thermal grizzly as I have had good experience with it in the past. On game setting I have mostly everything on except from full AA and AF. Will try the v sync option. Thx =)
Edit:
Repasted with IC 7 the tempatures dropped 15-20c degrees. The last batch from Thermal Grizzly is either some fake **** or I have been very unfortunate. Thx again Pat! I see you work at XoticPC, do you guys ship to Norway?Last edited: May 1, 2016 -
Hey guys,
I've had my p640re for less than a month now and just yesterday it suddenly won't boot to bios anymore.
When I turn the laptop on the display remains black/off and after about 30 seconds the CPU fans start to spin at full speed and the power/charging indicator LED starts to blink orange in 1 second pulses. This goes on for about a minute until the laptop automatically shuts off.
I tried connecting an external monitor but the display is still blank.
I also tried:
- swapping and testing the ram modules individually
- disconnecting my ssd
- disconnecting the battery and using the AC adaptor as the power source
- disconnecting all peripherals
- resetting the BIOS and replacing the CMOS battery
I did notice there seems to be an overflow of thermal paste from the manufacturer (PC Specialist) near the heatsink to the left. Not sure if the left chip is the CPU or GPU.
The laptop was working just fine the day before and I shut it down normally.
Not sure where else to look but I would really like to avoid having to send it back to the manufacturer if at all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey!
Sounds like a problem with either mobo, CPU or graphics card as you allready testet the ram modules. The chip in question is the GPU. But i had this also from factory, a lot of paste outside the chip. This is not dangerous as long as the paste is not conductive. -

Yeah, usually I've heard nothing but good about the kryonaut. But glad to hear that repasting it got your temps down!
Yes, we can ship worldwide. If you ever have any questions I can help with, feel free to message me directly!
When you have the system open, the GPU is on the left.
It depends on what thermal paste they used. Some are conductive and can be an issue. Might be worth cleaning that up if there is overflow. Otherwise, I would recommend reaching out to your seller where you purchased it, to see what they can suggest. -

The stock paste from clevo will always be generous, while not optimal for thermals (it makes very little difference in the end) it won't cause a problem.
-
i would definately recommend reaching out to your reseller to get an RMA. i actually had to do that with mine. only had it for a week when it started randomly rebooting while putting it on AC power.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

when will you get it back brah? -
not sure, i sent it last Monday and hopefully they will receive it tomorrow. from there, it could be another two weeks.

ya im really hoping it is something simple like the power brick itself.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.

That or a simple swap out of something else. Those kinds of issues can be a bit tricky to pin down.
-
Sounds like the exact issue I'm having with mine, except if I leave it for about 10 minutes, it'll turn on like normal. It's happened at least once a week since I've had it, although it's hard to troubleshoot given that I can't reproduce the error on demand. It sounds like a power issue, so I disabled the Windows 10 fast startup in case it had anything to do with not properly shutting down, and it's been OK for a couple of week so far, but I'm always worried every time I turn it on.
The guys I bought it from (Metabox in Australia) have provided a BIOS update for me to try, which I will if it happens again. -
im wondering if win 10 might just have issues with power configs all around. cause i had a similar issue with my asus that only happened under windows, but soon as i went to ubuntu it stopped.
-
Thanks for the responses everyone.
I was afraid it might be the GPU/CPU/mobo =/ Looks like I have no choice but to send it in for repairs.
I asked them to upgrade the stock thermal paste to the Arctic MX-4 which according to Tom's Hardware is not electrically conductive.
Yea I have no choice but to RMA it. This really sucks. More waiting
-
dude, i feel ya. but its better to get it sorted now than have it happen after the warranty is up. -
well upside is looks like it was signed for today at sager's office. here's hoping they get a fast turn around on it cause i am totally going nuts without it. LOL
