Hey looking at picking up the NP8151-3 from Xotic.. It's the TN (non g-sync panel). I've read(glimpsed) through this entire thread over the course of several days and didn't really see anyone using this. Any experience with this panel/setup?
-
That panel is pretty not great. The IPS GSync isn't the best display I've ever seen, but it look very good compared to that TN one. I would probably cough up the extra money for IPS and GSync, both are pretty nice features. Prostar is a bit cheaper than Xotic to just add the GSync display. I would not expect the TN model to sell much to be honest, the gpu is worth an IPS display.Xileforce likes this.

Thanks!Yeah I am primarily concerned about quality. Some TN panels are great, I've had a PG278Q for a couple years and it's awesome, but TN's can also be really crappy thus why I was curious. Money isn't really an issue either, it's 50$ from the 8151-3 to 8152-3.
Why I don't care for the IPS/GSync is :
1) 75% of the time this will be used for my job (programming) and travelling; so maximum battery life is key (I'd assume you get ~5-10% more battery out of a TN panel, hard to find good stats on this though).
2) Mobile G-Sync doesn't work on Linux, nvidia has had open bugs on it for 6 months, who knows if they'll ever fix.
I wish I could see them side by side though to compare quality. Have you actually seen the TN? Was it worse with blacklight bleed or significantly worse viewing angles or what? -
Thanks. I'm not really sure how all of this works so I'm trying to sort out the best approach to making this laptop run properly. What do you think the best approach is? Wait for Prema? Or use the version that you loaded?
-
I've seen the TN, I haven't seen the IPS in person though. The TN was fairly bad. Videos I've seen of the IPS have been more positive. The viewing angles on the TN are awful compared to the IPS. I didn't notice backlight bleed when I looked at it. I don't think you should be worrying about GSync not working, that is what it is on Linux. Have you considered dual booting? Considering the P650 can have 4 drives you don't even need to mess with partitioning.
I don't know enough about the battery life. I wouldn't think its too hard a hit. The best way to save battery life is to boot into igpu mode when not gaming, which can be done in bios. I'm pretty sure that should save more than you lose from having an IPS. A 4K IPS would be a much bigger hit. That said the 4k one seems to last 4 hours, and the 1080p IPS more like 5 from initial reviews I saw. -
What's actually wrong with it for you? If its the fix XMG posted you should probably do that if you know how, otherwise Prema's should be the best.
-
Curious if the laptops shipping out today include the newer EC.

Thanks! I guess then from your review I'll probably go with the IPS. Yeah I know about the iGPU and intend to use it. Battery life is the whole reason I'm also not dishing out for the 1070, 4K, and 6820k too though - it was very tempting. However, I primarily game off desktop so it's harder to justify that level of H/W. And no, I don't dual boot, the last Windows OS I had natively installed was NT4.0
. I actually have no idea how easy/compatible this laptop will be on Linux so it should be fun finding that out, shouldn't be any major issues though. Maybe eventually NVidia will fix the mobile G-Sync for us, they just disappoint me sometimes with bugs like this that go on for a while/ever. Desktop (real) G-Sync obviously works flawlessly though and I really do enjoy it in game.

3: I'm in the same boat as I'm also going to order my P670RS-G. If you are installing Windows 7 and then upgrading to Windows 10, will your nvidia vga driver gonna get messed up since you have to be online to do the upgrade?
-
The upgrade offer is over so...minus well clean install 10.

shame on me I didnt know you could actually use the media creation tool by Microsoft - this makes it so much easier

Do you purely game on Linux? I use it pretty extensively, but yikes I avoid it for gaming. Dual booting with seperate drives is a piece of cake.
-
Yeah definitely, I only game in Linux. Don't really mess with consoles anymore either. It's gotten a lot of support and attention the past couple years honestly, I rarely have any issues or have to jump through any hoops. Everything I want to play runs natively with the exception of STO that I still play in Wine. There are definitely some games though that are poor ports and don't run as well, most perform pretty equal though, especially when you stick with a high end graphics card (my desktop is a 980ti OC w/ 5820k OC both water cooled). I also avoid AMD like the plague because their drivers have always been horrible for gaming on Linux.
Edit: I have a 5 year old G74SX that I'm replacing this with and it has run great gaming on Linux, the same as it would've in Windows. It's so old though I really cannot play any AAA games any-more on anything other than low settings. It's also a 10lb monstrosity that I constantly get made fun of when I pull it out in meetings lol. I ordered the 8152-S though with the IPS panel, will be 1-2weeks it looks like, definitely appreciate your input on the TN panel.Last edited: Sep 16, 2016 -

Well they will perform ok but you will usually take a hit to performance even with nvidia.

Have you looked at System76?
http://betanews.com/2015/12/29/system76-oryx-pro-ubuntu-linux-review/
Based on the comments I think this is a Clevo P650-RG -
No, I had not. I had heard of them but didn't realize they were also the 650's. I just did a configuration on their site of the OryxPro : 15.6 IPS, 1060, 6700, 16GB, 256GB NVMe, 1TB hdd, 2 year warranty. It equalled 1,926$... The exact same base build on the Xotic (they also include things like IC, no branding, 30day pixel warranty, lifetime support/shipping blah, freebies, NBR discount) equalled 1,429$ ..... It definitely looks like its the Clevo 650. I have no idea why it cost 500$ more.
However, the fact they're running Linux off of it, and Meakers comments (assuming that was directed at me) makes me feel better, that there won't be any complications installing Linux on this.FredSRichardson likes this. -
That's impressive, but I gotta agree, you still take a performance hit, even more so with DX12 now out. Nvidia definitely works better than AMD though lol.
-
Eh DX12 vs Vulkan. We'll see who comes out on top within the next few years. Good ol' fashioned API war!
-
Im rooting for Vulkan 100%.

Share them here if you get any!

Definitely will, can probably get pics of my friend's as well.
I have an engraved P650SG photo if anyone wants that, I saw it in an IT department and took a pic lol. I posted it somewhere before in this thread I believe. -

Well, I'm glad to see someone fighting the good fight! I had to give up - I used to maintain my own Linux laptop but I found it took too much time. -
Can anyone confirm whether the P670RS-G / NP8173-S comes with a 60hz or a 75hz panel? I've seen conflicting information about that. Do different resellers sell laptops with different refresh rates, maybe?

I would be really grateful if someone could tell me what temps you get from a standard P650RS under max load and then temps after undervolting at max load.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk -
I believe a few people did some rough testing. Seems like they were shaving off about 10c on CPU with around 180mv undervolt if memory serves

Thanks. Any idea about normal voltage GPU temps?
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk -
1060 seems to hover around 72 stock. 1070 is around 77 stock. I'm sure that goes up ~2c with a decent oc.

No problem. Tho make note that it really depends on how good the paste and paste job is. Some people were getting like 80+c on GPU. While others repasted with gelid or kryonaut and dropped temps even further. Seems like repasting when it shows up is probably recommended ATM. Factory paste job can be hit or miss sadly

LPC-Digital and Sager are letting me keep my P650RS-G while I wait for a cross-ship replacement which is very generous of them. While I wait, I thought I would be able to provide some info for you guys temp-wise. I have the 6820HK with the factory ICD paste (CPU & GPU) and it's currently clocked to 4.0 GHz with a -40mV undervolt.
Under normal use the CPU temps are around the mid-50s to 60s (web browsing, programming) and when gaming it reaches the low 80s (I play Black Desert).
The GPU temps are pretty nice as well and hover around 40s when I'm not gaming and reaches 70 when I am.
If you don't plan on overclocking and just undervolt, I'm sure your temps will be incredibly cool.FredSRichardson, ThePerfectStorm and Xileforce like this. -
Wow you can hit 4ghz and drop voltage below stock? Skylake is crazy. Thanks for sharing your temps! What's wrong with your current p650?

If you look at my earlier post, the two RAM slots under the keyboard are malfunctioning. The BIOS detects the RAM, but when I put any modules into those two slots my whole computer becomes unstable (BSOD's, hardware failures with Aida64/Memtest/Prime95). I also get dozens of errors with Memtest86. However, I've tested each RAM module individually in the bottom slots to make sure they're okay, and I'm pretty sure the P650RS-G is compatible with DDR4-2133 modules so I've narrowed it down to those 2 slots. Larry said it could possibly be a BIOS problem (very unlikely but possible) so I may try to re-flash the BIOS or something, but I'm almost positive the slots are bad. He said Sager can probably ship a replacement when the next shipment comes in so I'm just using the laptop with 2 RAM modules for now.
-
Oh ya I remember you talking about that my bad! Hopefully your replacement comes soon and works right

Edit: The high temps being reported by them do concern me quite a bit. From their temp section, their ambient room temp is quite low and thats a luxury i rarely get in my country unless i'm in my uni campus or a shopping mall. Otherwise its hot and humid as hell where i'm atLast edited: Sep 17, 2016ThePerfectStorm likes this. -
Very good result. i gonna to get mine RS with HK and 120g-Sync too but need to wait till November (G-sync certification ends somewhere in October + shipping to Europe from Taiwan)... Please can you make stress test like 30 min xtu stress test + vally benchmark (looped) and tell me temps?
-
Do you suggest to pick mx4 thermal paste before buying? How are temperatures with stock paste?
-
Counting on buying a new laptop and I'm thinking about getting the P650RP6. First time buying a Clevo, so I hope I won't be disappointed.
Has anyone bought one from Obsidian PC? Their customer service has been perfect so far but I have no idea about shipping. Also, apparently they use Grizzly Kryonaut so I'm expecting temperatures to be lower than the ones of the review posted just above, and I'm going to undervolt for sure, but I'm wondering about the fans, as a lot of you complain that they go from 0 to 100 without a speed in between. I know the bios update fixed it but I'm wondering if that problem is also found on the Obsidian BIOS?Garridovic likes this. -
Does someone know if there is Bios updates for this model. If yes, where to get them ?
-
MX4 brought my temps down by around 5 to 7c across board from stock then kryo absolutely nuked it further. Its a very decent TIM without hurting wallet!much better than as5 and the likes.
Stock tim I believe GPU got to 76-79 MX4 72-75 and kryo 64-70 load.

After a lot of troubleshooting and testing why I was getting hitching and frame drops in VR, my friend and I have basically found the same thing... using latencymon, after plugging in the HDMI for the VR headset, ACPI is the clear leader in DPC and execution time and unplugging the HDMI doesn't fix it. Rebooting seems to make it go away, but similar to trying to use it with an external display, using it with VR is pretty useless until we have a fix for this.SharpHawk likes this.

Have you tried using mshybrid mode? I thought some people said that resolved it as a temp fix.

CPU temps can always be helped by an under volt too on the 6700HQ
