Bitdefender Free - effective, free and uses very few system resources. Should turn off Windows Defender is using this, I think.

Just ran the Firestrike test again, same settings as before, but with "Prefer Maximum Performance" under Nvidia Power Management settings, got these scores:

    6610 overall
    7532 graphics
    9559 Physics
    2777 Combined

Is the small improvement likely to be done to the Power Management setting, or is it just within normal statistical variation?

If you want to be sure about the statistical variation... Run it again, five times, and check :)

Okay, the Finger Print scanner is definitely working, as I can use it to log into Windows, but I think it's just using the built-in Microsoft software to do this, when I first got the computer last week there was some other software from EGIS that allowed you to customise more how you could use the Finger Print scanner, but I can't find anything like this on the EGIS website - does anyone know where I can find this software? It doesn't seem to be on my driver USB key, only the driver itself

Hi, I just got my p650sg and so far I have been very happy with it (after flashing with new bios to reduce throttling ofc) but there is one issue that is getting quite annoying. The spacebar is not as "responsive" as I would like. The entire lower outlines of the tangent fail to register as a pressed key. The key does press down (so it is not flexing) and there is also a crunching sound (which I find very confusing since I don't really look at what I'm typing but rely on the sound to verify that I successfully pressed a key).

So is this normal? I would like to know if there is any point in sending it back or if I simply have to adapt to the new keyboard.

Would appreciate it if owners of these laptops could reply with their thoughts on this issue. Thanks!

I'm having a small annoying issue with my P650SG during boot. I have UEFI enabled, and when I start my computer it refuses to boot into windows if I have my external Blu-Ray drive plugged in. As soon as I unplug it the stylenote logo appears and everything is fine. Any ideas as to how to get around this issue? There aren't any options in the bios...

Edit: I've narrowed it down to a single usb port. If I have any device plugged into the USB port closest to the bottom of the laptop the computer will not boot into UEFI mode. As soon as I unplug the device from that port the computer starts fine.

Your scores are OK. And yes, you can leave it OCed all the time because when you are not doing anything GPU intensive, the GPU doesn't work at full speed anyway so it's OK in my opinion :) My personal highscore in FireStrike is 7720, where I overclocked the core to a boosted GTX980M level(1127=+203), and the Memory by +550 to 3055 with no real overvolting. NVIDIA Inspector put a +6.3 mV automatically so I can't do anything about that and I don't dare overvolting, YET :) . This is my sweetspot for now, because anything above that crashes FireStrike. I just have to try some lower levels of core and memory speed to see if there are better values.

I have no idea about that software, I don't have it either.

My spacebar is responsive whichever part I press so you could consider sending it back because it is one of the most used parts of the keyboard and it can get annoying :)

Did you try changing the priority to your OS Hard Drive while your external drive is plugged in? Maybe that can help.

When UEFI is enabled I can't modify the boot order in the bios. Unless there's a way to do it in Windows?

You can only choose 'Windows Boot Manager' or disabled. If I choose the latter the computer errors on boot.

Thank you for your response kaded. Was almost hoping for all of these computers to have an error with the keyboard so I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of sending it back and waiting for repairs :).

I take it that you figured out how to set the ram timing? I'm looking to get this laptop in the next couple months and will more than likely utilize the same RAM & Bios. Thanks in Advance!

Never, under any circmstances, should any user run bitedefender above version 2010. The versions got increasingly more invasive and locked down more and more of systems even without the locks being turned on. As someone who used Bitdefender from version 7 all the way through version 2012 and dabbling in 2013 once, I can tell you they're powerful, but nowhere near practical to run.
Unless their latest version is a complete 180 and a return to version 2009 and 2010, which I doubt, since they increasingly began cutting costs in bug/error reporting in their beta and post-launch periods, using popularity contest websites and discarding their own website each time.

Wow, Bitdefender is rated among the best in most rankings, but i will take your advice into consideration !
The problem is that as i am new to the tech and PC world, i don't know which websites are objective and fair on the subject of software and hardware, so i usually compare multiple rankings to make the best choice according to my needs.

Can i ask you which AV you would recommend then ?

Is it possible to use another power supply? Like a 220-230 or 330w psu because 180w doesn't seem like it leaves enough headroom for any overclocking with the 980m.

It does if you keep to the default voltage. Only when overvolting does the power consumption exceed 180W. I've tested this with a power consumption monitor.

I recommend something fairly lightweight for 24/7 active use, and Malwarebytes for a once-a-week or once-a-month scan. Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials etc should be fine for an active protection, and don't impact the system a whole lot. This isn't really an antivirus to do heavy protection or scanning (though Avira is fairly decent), but Malwarebytes Anti Malware will be your powerhouse scanning and removal system.

I don't know about Qihoo, but with BD I can say I had issues like, audio being broken in games and being incapable of accessing certain websites online and some programs just flat out running terribly with no indication as to why, and disabling every feature of the antivirus wouldn't fix the issues.

Now, don't get me wrong, both of you. It is my firm belief that if your system is royally screwed by viruses, bitdefender *WILL* delete them. It doesn't matter where they are, it WILL clean them out. But after that, I would suggest uninstalling it XD. It's so powerful that there was once an update where Bitdefender thought every single thing on the PC was broken, and it deleted half the stuff out of the windows folder. Yeah, Bitdefender managed to delete windows. With UAC turned on, I might add. And on Vista, where security was highest across XP, Vista, 7 and 8, especially when its UAC was on. It's powerful stuff.

Just terrible to keep running all the time.

So no-one else has this issue? If I do a regular shutdown this doesn't seem to be a problem, but if I shutdown then turn off the powerpoint at the wall then boot back up it gets stuck every time.

You will be introduced to flicker and sluggish response times on the screen at 48Hz. Whether you are capable of perceiving sluggishness or slowdown is up to you, however. I probably would, but you might not. I've met people who noticed flicker on my 60Hz D900F panel but I could not notice it.

What's the order of the RAM slots?

    Is it

    Under keyboard: 1 2
    Under bottom cover: 3 4

And what order for dual-channel? Assuming above order is it 1+2/3+4 or 1+3/2+4

What were your actual clock speeds and voltage?

You can use a Dell 230/240/330 watt brick and an adapter cable. Details in the OP under the mods spoiler. I'll be getting the 330W brick when my P650SG arrives. The 180W adapter is pretty pathetic. Even my lowly Lenovo has a 170W one.

Sounds like the correct slot orientation.

I remember the mobile chipsets not needing specific slots, but you could always ask Sager/Mythlogic/Eurocom if it's needed.

I believe this has just been mis-quoted around due to a similar, earlier model Samsung 4K panel existing that was limited to 48hz.
The 4K panels available in the P65X are both 60hz capable.

In notebooks dual channel is always obtained by using slots next to each other.

    A1 + B1 (under main panel) = dual channel
    A2 + B2 (under keybiard) = dual channel

    You can also do:

    A1 + B2
    A2 + B1

But don't if you don't have to.

Interesting, why going to 330W? As stated cakefish, 180W is ok even for mild gpu oc. You are a bit locked down on the cpu side, since it seems to be hardware level tdp locked. Do you plan to have a lot of peripherals hooked to your p650sg?

its very frugal when it comes to using system ressources :) and yeah, good thing about it that it uses several different engines all at once, its veeery fast and u basically dont notice it in the background :) aside from that, its always coming out on top with regard to malware detection rate.

Sorry Meaker, this made me more confused.

The RAM slots are numbered as follows
    Under keyboard: 1 2
    Other side: 3 4

So you're saying for dual channel plug into either adjacent (1+2 and 3+4) or alternate (1+3 and 2+4) slots? No dual channel if 1+4 and 2+3?

Going big in case I need to use it elsewhere in the future. 240W should suffice as well for the P650SG. One thing is for certain though. The stock 180W brick will not be enough for the overclock I want to run at.

Meaker, do you know if the P650SG can utilize the additional power from a 240W or 330W brick, or is there a power limitation on the mainboard?

I asked this over in HTWingnut's revuiw thread but I'm gonna ask here asswell.

Ok...so I just observed a weird thing...maybe I'm crazy but bare with me here.

My 3dmark scores looks like they are affected by the starting temp of the GPU...

I just observed that the first run in 3dmark firestrike when starting the laptop from cold was 6573 overall with 7483 graphics score.

After that second run (starting with 33ºC on the gpu) was 6535 with 7432 graphics.

Third one (starting at 38º C) went down to 6501/7402

Max fans on...wait for gpu to go down to 31º before starting 3dmark firestrike again and scores went back up.

    Is this normal?

I've tested this more and I don't believe it's margin of error... I tested arround 20 times on stock clocks.

Every time that I don't let the GPU cool down after the previous run, the scores drop...when i let the GPU fully cool down the scores come up again.

The adapter I had is faulty as it wouldn't even run the machine under normal conditions. It would constantly die out even on Power Savings mode. If anyone has a working 240W PSU (I have converters now), please do send it my way if possible. The last one I have returned already.

EDIT: In the meantime... once I get over my addiction of the New 3DS+MH4u, I will be doing another test to break the 9360 overall Firestrike score while on this default PSU. I have a few things I'd like to try.

Perhaps have a look to your vram's cooling solution: such temperature difference means nothing, but temperature is actually recorded on core. If you vram are not properly cooled (thermal pads with a gap/mis aligned) they can go much higher than core in temperature, and maybe explain this behavior. Do you see any artifacts in 3d mark?

Absolutely no artefacts bellow +450 Mhz After that performance slowly degrades(presumably due to vRam error correction) and @ arround 480Mhz I get artefacts/crashes....bellow 450 everything is rock stable.

You got the Dell PA-9E 240W brick with the X75 converter cable from Bixnet, right? Are you planning to get another brick which isn't faulty?

Maybe. I want to try a place that guarantees that the adapter works.

I have both my 8Gb Corsair Vengeance modules in the slots that aren't under the keyboard, just because it was easiest to put them there. I have the under-the-keyboard slots empty. Does it matter where the RAM goes then? My modules are reporting to be running in dual channel mode and at their full (2133Mhz) speed:

Fair enough, I have noticed a few programs causing Bitdefender to crash, which isn't great and it's possibly causing some other issues.

I'm going to try a mix of Microsoft Defender for real-time protection with regular scans of Malwarebytes Free and see how that works out, I think.
