Wow, the 980m is really a lot hotter than I expected. Not alot of OC headroom especially due to the 180W PSU. I think going with the 970m will be a better choice. Can anyone else with the 980m also confirm their GPU temps under load is 78? That's quite a lot for a laptop thicker than an inch on stock clocks.
-

I expected that as the 980m IS a beast... I've seen higher temps on 860m...
-

My 860m on a 21mm laptop is mid 70's under full load. I'd like to see some more 980m temp values just so I have a better idea of different variables
-

My P650SE reaches 65° under full load without any cooler and without elevating it.

CPU temps are even better, in comparison to other laps I have had.

Repasted with IC diamond, keep in mind.
-

Actually it runs very cool for being in such a thin chassis, it might be hotter than YOU like but temps are still excellent.
You got yo remember it uses about twice the power of you 860M but is probably 2-3 as powerful.
Really temps are fine and those were done with no help, probably raising the back of the laptop will drop temps even more.No one should be worried about temps.Praedaedae likes this.

That's fantastic and it would help clear up some questions of the stock IPS screen they now offer, a good screen is very important to me and probably most people so any detailed info would great, temps too just to clear up notions that the poster above says it runs hot which it doesn't like the person who actually has the laptop has shown it runs cool for the best GPU out today.
 Congrats and enjoy
On a side note are all the stock IPS screens matte?
Believe or not I wouldn't mind a glossy screen since colors pop out more.Praedaedae likes this.

What do you expect ??? It is a hot GPU and I'm rather happy with the temps... there IS room for OCing.
Also I'm pretty sure that you won't reach 180W when gaming.

+80° are quite normal for any msi GE60 model.

Folks, my Clevo with the 780M gets into the low 90's. No way can you call load temps in the 70's and low 80's 'really high'. You're just asking for a miracle there. It's a physical impossibility for this form factor on the current architecture and manufacturing process.

I don't see how the 970M running cooler makes it a better option in terms of performance. You'll never be able to overclock it to the stock level of the 980M anyway (without extremely large - and risky - voltage mods at least), let alone an overclocked 980M - even if it has comparatively less headroom to overclock proportionately, so to speak. So... I don't see how that logic works.

All this panic over temps in the 70's is silly in my opinion. GPUs are more than capable of lasting years and years running at those temps. Remember that even desktop reference AMD R9 290's run quite happily in the 90's. Got to put it into perspective. You don't need load temps in the 40's to feel good about your purchase. The lower the better of course, but temps in the 70's and 80's are perfectly safe - else my current Clevo would be nothing but a gloopy pile of molten plastic and metal by now

Whats the max safe temp for the 970m and 980m? If it's in the 90's then thats great. With a heavy OC and re-paste I expect a 10 degree temp difference. (as is the case with the 860m; I have it at +270 on the core and it runs about 10 degrees hotter)
-

Cake I think you have a bad heatsink or paste job. My P150SM with 780M and 950/5500 OC never hit 90°C. If I run furmark for 15min, it stay around 85°C.
BTW I agree 70°C is nothing to panic.
-

 Define 'safe'. Truth is that it varies with each individual card. From what I understand, I don't believe that there is a single universal 'safe' value that is applicable to all GPUs. I know LinusTechTips has a great video summing this all up quite nicely;

Even if you can overclock the 970m to 980m levels, the heat would be similar, but you will have 1 GB less of vram. Unfortunately the way developers are using vram, I would not buy a gaming laptop with less than 4GB.
-
yyyyyesssssssssssss, my Notebook is shipped today, so hopefully it will be at my place tomorrow or on wednesday. However, I've already started createing a user review for this system (for now in german) but I will translate it as soon as I'm fnished with it.
-

Well yes, that's a good point too. If your main reason to get the 970M over the 980M is temperature and then you decide to overclock to make up some of the difference that will pretty much serve to only raise the temps to very similar levels anyways.

In conclusion, base your buying decision between 970M vs 980M on performance, not temps - unless you plan to run at stock clocks where the 970M will have an advantage in temperature. Not sure what the everyday benefit of that is - it's not like the chassis heats up that much on these models anyways - we know this from people's experiences posted on these forums.

Yep. I would say get a 970m if you want great performance, but don't care about having the very best available at the moment. Probably also the route to go if you really care about having a slim gaming notebook.

On an unrelated note, it's 6:30pm and my UPS tracking still says that my laptop will arrive "before the end of the day". Starting to doubt that, considering the package seemingly hasn't even arrived in my country yet But either way, I'll have it tomorrow But either way, I'll have it tomorrow

You play games without sound, eh?
-

I thought it was established already that 970m is the best bang for the buck as of now. you get performance ballparking 980m while paying a couple hundred less, that basically means for anyone with a tight budget 970m is the no brainer. so what are we even arguing here?
-

If it's really still in Germany, you won't have it, unless you live in germany!
-
Are there any sellers in NA selling the P651SG? or is it all P650SGs?
-

I've repasted many times before, never seemed to do much benefit. Doesn't really matter anymore, next week I get a shiny new 980M to play with bigspin likes this. bigspin likes this.

Oh, again one of those 3GB DDR5 noobs...yes your card is the best, happy ? Now go play your games with medium-high settings you peasant... (joking with you of course^^). Well for 250$ i won't spit on 1 extra (much needed) GB of Vram, 25-30% more performance, more shaders. But for tight budget the 970M is perfect, personnally, only the 3 GB of Vram was a no no for me.jaybee83, Cakefish, LoneSyndal and 2 others like this.

 1) It is, best bang fur buck
 2) If u have a tight budget, u are here at the wrong place. U should buy a Acer or HP instead.
 3) In my opinion, 30% more power for a couple of hundred $¥£, is more Bang For Buck!!

One week work is an upgrade from 970m to 980m.. And for me, totally worth it..

Has anyone found a source for ordering the Sharp 4K screens on the np8652.
Seeing as its up in the air on if we will have it as a Sager option, would like to know if it will be possible to get one in the foreseeable future to upgrade to.
-
Exactly my thoughts. One could also say you get 30% more power for 15 % more money, which is well worth it for me.
-

Yeah I think saying '970M is ball-parking the performance of the 980M' is a bit of a (big) exaggeration. Good value, no doubt. But there is definitely a difference in the gaming performance!
-

 Apparently PowerNotebooks do.
-

For me it didn't really matter about the money, but infact that the difference between a 25mm laptop and 28.8mm laptop is quite a lot. It's basically the difference between a portable and a thick (look he's a nerd/gamer) laptop, which I can use at reading rooms/public places etc. Even though I would have loved a 980m when I'm chilling at home
-

Are u serious..? That extra 3.8mm are only the feedstands (the 4 nips on each corner on the bottom) so the laptop is higher above the table for more fresh air. I think if u chop them, laptop is 25mm again with the 980m.

I dont own one, yet. So i could be wrong

I've got a bit of a problem. Waiting for the P651SE I ordered to be shipped, however after further discussions with Mysn I understand that Windows 7 (which I have and I would definitely prefer over 8.1) is not actually officially supported for this system. They told me that some specific drivers for this laptop like Touchpad, Hotkey, AirplaneMode, MEI, Wlan (M.2), IRST and IRStart, RAID, Fingerprint reader are not available for Windows 7 (maybe in the future)...

My question is: did anyone try to use Windows 7 on this laptop? If yes, did you have any issues? Or anyone who can advice me on this - will I be able to actually use Windows 7 or am I likely to run into difficulties?

So far communication with mysn uk has been very good, during working days they usually answer within 2-3 hours after emailing them, so that's a big plus for them, however this issue with Windows 7 is really worrying me...
-
Generally the newer hardware functions better on something it was designed for. Going backwards "may" cause issues that cannot be fixed without support straight from manufacturer. Any particular reason why you think Windows 8 will hold you back when it supports win7 compatibility?
-
Unfortunately you're wrong. I just measured : The chassis is ~29mm thick (front and rear) + rubberstands (front 3mm, rear 5mm)
But anyway, for me the weight is more of a factor
-

 Can anyone confirm this?
-
At first I was thinking like you. But a friend convinced me that there really is no reason to stay away from Win8. I use the classic shell and it feels a lot like 7 but has some nice new features. It runs smooth and stable.
-

29mm just chassis or total height including foot pegs?
-
 It's in my post

Anyone know the difference between Xotic's display options for the 8651 and the 8652? What brand is on the 8652?

 8651 - Anti-Glare Matte-Type Sager IPS Screen (1920x1080) (LG Brand) (SKU - S2K003)

8652 - Super Clear Matte Type Sager IPS Screen (SKU - SSC878)

 Thanks!!

 Hey guys,
First off nice informative thread! I am ready to pull the trigger on a 8651 or 8652 but have a couple reservations.

 1) the chassis on the 8652 is a smidge thicker right (4mm?) than the 8651?
 2) Will surfing and doing powerpoints/word documents between both models get the same battery life? (I assume yes since the cards have optimus...)
 3) Lastly, I will be using the laptop extensively for school. I had a surface pro 3 which I sold and I have had retina macbooks. If I am reading and working a lot with text/pdfs and powerpoints etc will getting the 4k screen be "easier" on my eyes or will it be negligible from 1080p? (The cost doesnt bother me but no sense in paying for something that will not effect me.)

Thanks in advance for your input!
-

I can confirm this, it is JUST under 29mm and the footing (separate to chassis size) on the bottom is 5mm (rear) and 3mm (front). If my calipers came in the mail already I would measure with pics.

Now saying that, its still slim as opposed to the P150EM I own, big difference, the rear of that was over 50mm, not including its feet.
-

Yeah, that is quite the difference! I used to have a m17x r4 and that was huge. I also had a Asus g551 (@33mm), I found it too thick! Then purchased and returned a gs60 ghost pro (20mm?) --> The size of that was better but was not a fan of the tacky dragon logo and fans were really loud even while playing dota 2 which is not that intense relative to some others. Also felt it was priced a bit high.

Either way looking forward to this sexy p650!
-
Not to mention the fans at idle were a little loud. They weren't bad, but having them vent on the top side certainly didn't help the noise.
-

I've ordered the 8652 from Xotic and will let you know what screen it has when it arrives. I have a LTN156HL01-102 sitting here as well - it made it here before the laptop. Will let you know which is better. I plan to keep this laptop a long while so I guess it will pay off to have two screens at my disposal.tfast500, edwardamin13, flamy and 1 other person like this.

Haha same! Exact order and screens. I purchased the Samsung screen right before they started offering all the IPS displays... Now I ordered from XOTIC who has the IPS by default... I may just wait for you to review ;p before switching it out... 19th couldn't come any slower I hope it is EDP 30 pin so we don't have an extra but incompatible screen

Thanks Weav, I am waiting for my order at Xotic to change from the 8651 to the 8652, I figured for the small price increase it was worth it to have the 980m and 4720HQ.tfast500 likes this.
