I have this curious problem with a stuck red pixel that happens sometimes but goes away with a reboot. It happens on 100Hz and stock refresh rate too. I hope it's not an actual stuck pixel and some software thing.

I ordered the sager 8177 earlier today but the thread for that is not very active. Curious, what tweaks should I be looking to do right out of the box? From what I understand, the PREMA bios isn't available yet, but I believe I'm reading I should reduce the voltage. Not very interested in overclocking yet, but curious if there is a list somewhere of tweaks that can help performance without reading a 111 page thread. Thanks in advance!

I call it Creators Abortion because that's what it is. I would love to switch to Linux, and there is no question in my mind that it is a better OS. However, I would have nothing left to do after reading my email and posting here in the forum. Almost none of the other things I enjoy are supported and the list of Linux compatible game titles I am interested in playing is small enough to count on my fingers, with a digit or two to spare.

Yes, and M$ knows this, so they don't care. lol
You think in a world of capitalism, someone else would have risen up by now to compete for the PC Gamer Market, Steam OS tried and failed miserably, even though Steam has a ton of money... heh. Someone needs to go rogue, copy Directx 9-12, implement it into some sort of new OS, and accept only bitcoin payments and stay ANON rofl -

Unless you ordered your machine from a Prema partner shop, you won't have access to that BIOS. -

It's a lot easier to make a simpler OS stable to be fair. I just microsoft would not add silly complexity.
I'd pay an extra for a stripped down gaming focused build of the OS.Papusan likes this. -
Yes, I agree. It's a real shame how screwed up Windows 10 is... HUGE MESS to say it as kindly as I can.
You know you can strip it down yourself, right? That's what a number of us are doing now. You can remove all of the filth and have nothing left but an undefiled version of Windows 10 (or as close to that as you can get with something as screwed up as Windows 10, LOL). Use the MSMG Toolkit and boot the trash to the curb.

I would pay extra as well, and this is an ingenious insight someone needs to whisper to M$.Papusan likes this. -
Changing Windows versions won't do jack for you, bro. My machines are dual boot and I am unable to identify even one good reason Windows 10 is actually better than Windows 7. Unless you messed something up with the current Windows installation, Windows 10 is going to run the same or worse.
-
I ordered from HID so I should be all set with that. How hard is it to undervolt these things?
-
Speaking of, how are you supposed to know when it is out for our device? I'm assuming the seller won't notify you unless you ask and I'd rather not constantly do that...
-
My HDD has a clicking noise ever since I upgraded to Win 10 Creators Upddate, about every 1.5 seconds. Lot of tests show 0 bad sectors and HDD is fully healthy, and it never made this noise before Creators Update.
Thoughts? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Is it spinning down at all? An aggressive power saving timer perhaps?
-
I changed it from 10 minutes to 9999 minutes for HDD to shut off in power settings, click has gone away. lol, weird. -
You upgraded to new Windoze. Don't expect everything will work as before out of the box. Nice everything works again

Anyone have issues with random reboots or the screen going black? (NP8173)
I'm one step away from doing an RMA, but I really don't want to go through the hassle especially if it comes back with the same issue.
I suspect it could be a motherboard issue. I don't have overheating problems, all cores are within 3-5 degrees of each other.
Would they even give me a new motherboard?
My laptop screen randomly goes black. The only thing I can find is a kernel power error in the event log. The laptop runs okay most of the time. But when I put it to sleep, the next morning (or sometime during the day) it will either randomly restart or I get a black screen and have no choice but to hard restart. Before it does this you can see the mouse freeze, and the keyboard becomes unresponsive. I've tried reinstalling windows (auto updated to Windows creators; which is when this is became really ad) I've created custom power settings, updated Intel management engine etc... Sometimes I can go almost a month with no issue, it's just odd. -
If this happens only with Windoze X "Creators Abortion Edition". You have the culprit. Have you downloaded latest Nvidia drivers and tested(Run DDU Unintaller first). You could as well try new Windoze clean install + drivers and software. Test before you go on internet(maybe Windoze push aka install crippled drivers). Download all you need beforehand.
-
Clean install may help.. Thanks for the advice
The problem didn't exactly start with W10 creators rather it became more frequent. I've been testing out all sorts of undervolt settings ever since I purchased this laptop. I suspect that may also be playing a roll in my laptops instability. I haven't done anything too crazy though; 6820hk -88 mv to -125 mv, anything over -88, and the CPU overclock program crashes. One thing I notice upon my laptop freezing/restarting is it often reverts my undervolt settings to stock. I wonder if the control center is the real issue here. -
Don't make the big changes, if you want testing your machine for stability. Only do as suggested with new install. Maybe try with different CCC or without. Be sure Windoze don't change drivers. At least not in your testing. You need find the culprit. If not a RMA is next move.
Edit. See also this + next pages. And I don't say that's your problem. Much problems can be explained with drivers, software and OS. And not only hardware.Last edited: May 23, 2017 -
1.05.07 still latest BIOS i assume? Haven't seen any new ones for a while.
It's gotten pretty stable and quiet since that one, for me personally. -
Can anymore owners share their temps of battlefield 1 and overwatch? I've only seen 2 other peoples temps and they had different cpus. I want to know if my comp was a dud.
-
Your heatsink probably isn't seated probably, my Clevo in my sig rig was getting 97 celsius in BF1, i changed the paste (heard a loud pop when I put the heatsink back in) and temps dropped 20-30 celsius. those Chinese workers arms are to weak or something
-
Was that the first time applying new thermal paste? You've done quite a few alterations to your comp if I remember correctly.

I haven't seen anything about a new one either, and I feel pretty happy with the system overall now. Took a while, but we seem to have gotten there
-
I can second this. I was seriously considering returning the machine previously due to the myriad of issues and bugs but I've not experienced any issues in a month. Extremely glad I decided to stick with it. It's a bit ironic, I don't even do intense stuff on it anymore, just browse the internet mainly.
-
Is there a big difference between this and the 8177? I don't think there is. And if there isn't, what type of temps should I be looking at? On my 8177, my idle temp is around 40 and max under stress is around 88, with a -130V undervolt... I'm not a fan of these temps at all but curious what others are getting
-
saturnotaku Notebook Nobel Laureate
With no undervolt and Coollaboratory Ultra on the CPU, my 6820HK would only crack 80 degrees when running an AIDA64 benchmark with the CPU, GPU, and RAM under stress at the same time. A -100mV undervolt would see the CPU top out in the 75-76 range.

The cooling is the same between the two generations. -

Ja I'm in a similar boat. I think if I could go back I would have waited a few months before considering upgrading. I'm happy with it now, but still. Oh well
-
So are my temps higher than I should hope for?
-
Are there media keys FN shortcuts on the Clevo laptops? I noticed on my sig rig laptop from Clevo, I have the FN key to pause and play songs on Spotify, but I have no way to skip to next song... where is the media key for this? Laptop model in my sig.

Just ordered the Acer Predator XB271HU bmiprz 27" as my new external screen. Had a gift card and ended up paying $630 for it. I'll be upgrading from a 2.5 yr old Acer 24" IPS 60hz 1080p screen, which has served me well for the $120 it cost me, but is now starting to occasionally flicker. It may or may not have started after I tried to overclock it

Well, it's been 8 months since I got this machine and I think it's time to put some more RAM and some more storage in, finally. The NP8173 page isn't on Sager's website anymore, so iirc this laptop takes:
2 7mm SATA HDD/SDDs or one 9.5mm SATA HDD/SDD (I think the stock 1TB drive is 9.5, so no expansion here?)
and 2 M.2 SATA SSDs or one PCIe SSD.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I want to be sure of what the machine can take before I buy anything lol. -
7+9.5 or 7+7...
So you can add 7mm one - like samsung 850evo as i recall...
About m2 - there are 2 slots for drives but one is limited somehow. There is 3rd m2 slot for wifi (short form factor) -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Grab a single large M.2 NVME drive and you are good to go
-
Oh, that's good, I'll grab another SATA drive then.
Lol, I would love to, but I don't think my wallet can take that. I think I'll be buying a 500GB SATA SSD to supplement the HGST included one and I'm deciding on these for the PCIe SSD:
If you have recommendations for a better combo or better (economically conscious) NVMe drive I'd love to hear them. -
Is this normal?
Boot test. My Sager logo always appears twice...
Also, every once in a while when I cold boot, the keyboard lights up, followed by a single click, and then the laptop boots normally. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
PCI-E and SATA M.2 is not supported. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That's the hand off of UEFI to windows display driver. -
What about a SATA III one like the 850? (and PCIe)
-
You can opt for SSD 850 PRO - EVO for your second 2.5" slot. Or SanDisk Extreme Pro 480/960GB who is the best 2.5" ssd out there.
