Yeah im already using Kryo which works fine, i even tested liquid metal but the pressure wasnt good enough for it to be effective but having a voltage curve closer to the max Q design clocks makes a difference im not doing it for any special but if theres no problems its free real estate

also anyone else notice the display gets temporary burnin if you leave an image on it too long, usually a bright white one

I'm not sure yet but it seems like my graphics card might be starting to fail.

My Sager N8172/Clevo P670RP6 is sometimes rebooting itself at the BIOS screen, rebooting/freezing a few seconds after it loads Windows 10 or freezing before windows 10 loads with a blank screen. I have to keep rebooting to get it to load into Windows 10 correctly. These problems have been around for about a week. It's locked up Starcraft II a once or twice recently also. I did re-paste about two months ago.

    I've tried:
    • removing the graphics driver with DDU and reinstalling newest drivers
    • rolling back the most recently installed windows 10 "features" updates
    • latest restore point
    • check for disk errors/defrag
    • run windows 10 startup repair
    • fresh install of windows 10
    • reverting back to the original NVIDIA drivers
It seems to be little better (too early to tell, but Starcraft II isn't locking up), but now that I'm back on the original drivers the screen sometimes goes dark for a second when using different applications. I can see some trailing green dots when this happens.
Anything else worth trying to fix it? Thanks for any advice.

Latest drivers shouldn't give you any trouble.

Check your W10 event viewer to see what causes the freezes/reboots. If it's the GPU then something related to it should show up (like: "nvlddmkm" stopped working and recovered successfully); if not, then you should get the cause there (if I recall right, thermal events also show up there...). If you are on Linux, check your logs for any GPU related error (like: "GPU XX has fallen off the bus" which is quite self explanatory...). If you find these, then most likely nvidia's GPU is failing and, most likely, you'll need another motherboard.

Try Intel's GPU to check if it also freezes with it.

Thank you. I don't see anything in the W10 event viewer from the last crash/reset but I'll have to check it again later today. I was also running the windows boot logging and didn't see anything out of the ordinary there. For Starcraft II this showed up in the log right before it froze (when I was using the new driver):

GFX 22:41:59.115 D3D9 Device Reset from unknown returned e_errorKindGfx(0)
GFX 22:42:41.376 DirectX call m_device->TestCooperativeLevel() failed with error code -2005530520
GFX 22:42:44.853 DirectX call m_device->TestCooperativeLevel() failed with error code -2005530519
GFX 22:42:44.853 DirectX call failed with error code -2005530519
    GFX 22:42:44.853 Lost D3D9 device
    GFX 22:42:45.159
GFX 22:42:45.159 D3D9 Device Reset from ::OnRender returned e_errorKindGfx(0)

This looks more like a software than hardware error to me.

Looks like a graphics driver crash/reset command.

That one looks like software's. The rebooting/freezing on W10 startup looks more worrisome. You could also try to stress the GPU with 3dmark's tests or a demanding game, if it's failing, most likely, it'll crash there.

Thank you for this. I dug into error logs in Windows 10 and couldn't find anything. Was about to play Starcraft II and then it reset again. Installed 3dMark and ran Firestrike. It crashed a few minutes into the Firestrike Demo and reset again. I ran Firestrike another time and once again it reset at a different spot in the Firestrike Demo.

Does this confirm that the GPU is on it's way out? Had a good run I guess, 4 years old. I'm a bit sad. I'll still use it but since I need an external display and can't use the Intel chip I'll get one of those USB C to 4k things.

Time to start research for a new machine. Maybe something with a 10th gen i7 or Ryzen 4800H with RTX 2060...suddenly I'm not sad anymore.

I'll try Witcher 3 in the morning to see if that crashes.

And no error log for the Firestrike run? This is what a W10 error log of a failing GPU looks like:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...s-owners-lounge.795090/page-527#post-10471445

Run Firestrike with different drivers, if the GPU is failing it should crash with any of them. Check CPU/GPU temp. when running them, and remove undervolting/overclocking if you have any. Try also Intel's GPU to see if it crashes with it. If you have another PSU try the other too, to rule out a faulty PSU.

Updated the driver, ran Firestrike and it crashed. Put the notebook into MSHYBRID, disabled the NVIDIA GTX 1060, and the Intel graphics chip ran the Firestrike test (horribly slow) without crashing. Don't have another PSU for the notebook to test.

And it does look like my event viewer log is like what you linked. I ignored it before because it was a "warning" flag instead of error or critical. "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." attached in screenshot.

That warning is a TDR failure regarding the display driver, so your GPU or driver is the one behind the crashes. And crashing that often is usually not a good sign.

Yup, looks like your GPU is failing. If it crashes with several drivers (even with those that used to work fine before) and several games/tests you can rule out driver/software issue.

    @RZR @Meaker@Sager

Thank you for your help. I was about to buy one of the new Clevo PC50 notebooks and I've been using MSHYBRID mode for the past 1/2 day. In a last ditch effort to troubleshoot...

-I switched the computer back into Discrete Mode, ran Firestrike and it crashed/reset like before
-I turned on GPU overclock in Clevo CC, lowered core -200 mhz, ran Firestrike and no crash
-I increased to -100 mhz and put the memory back to +0, ran Firestrike (no crash)
-I increase to +0 mhz, ran Firestrike (no crash)
-Turned off GPU overclock, restarted, ran Firestrike (no crash)
-Played Witcher 3 for about 20 minutes, SC2 for about 30 minutes, ran Firestrike, ran Timespy and I can't make it crash now.

There still does seem to be a tiny bit of flickering in Windows and during the benchmarks but way better than before. But this is really strange right?

EDIT: It did crash/reset during a stress test that I just tried. Great excuse for me to get permission from the wife to get a new Clevo PC50

That looks like it's failing, but hasn't failed completely yet. Being a hardware issue, it'll only get worse with time, and eventually it'll fail completely. You can always use Intel's GPU then, so it's up to you to get a new one or not.

When the 1070 on mine failed, it would only crash when running intensive GPU software connected to the PSU, and randomly on boots, but never crashed when running from the battery, so I guess on my case it was failing some hardware that delivered power to the GPU from the PSU. This means the GPU is not an entity as a whole, it has components and if a component fails under certain circumstances, then the whole thing fails, if not, it doesn't.

Keeping it downclocked may help keep it running a bit longer but it sounds like a case of when rather if it will give up entirely.

Hi everyone... I have been following this thread since like 3 years ago, even before I bought my p670rp6-g. In fact, I bought mine solely because of the feedback in this thread.I'm really satisfied with this laptop since all these years of using it for gaming & work. However, lately my laptop has been acting up. My laptop now constantly fails to boot up properly. It will boot to black screen just after the logon screen. I have to switch on and off the power button for 3 times until the third attempt when the recovery screen will appear and I would just choose to load the windows normally without fixing anything in the recovery screen.. and the laptop will startup properly to windows and I can use it just fine. This boot to black screen issue also happens when trying to wake up the laptop from sleep. Thus, I cannot sleep my laptop anymore.

The weird thing I discovered later is, this issue doesn't occur in mshybrid mode. It happens consistently in discrete mode only. So, I have to use mshybrid most of the time now and only use discrete mode for gaming. Btw, I did several attempts to fix this issue by following the guides from around the internet and nothing worked so far including clean uninstall & reinstall gpu drivers. The only thing left that I haven't try yet is to reformat the windows. Btw, I also did the roll back windows updates and that also didn't work..

Should I try to reformat the windows? or what should I do? or.. is this a sign of my gpu dying? Because it only happens in discrete mode. However, there is no any other sign of dying gpu yet because I can play games for hours just fine with no issue. Fyi, my laptop has no thermal issue. I repaste and clean my laptop every 6 months since I have no air cond at home.

I hope anybody here can shed some lights about this issue. At the moment, I have no other backup pc/laptop..and currently I'm saving to buy a new pc setup but that will take some time.. Any feedback is highly appreciated. Thanks!

I had similar issues just this past month and troubleshooted with the help of @RZR and @Meaker@Sager

How are your temperatures? Does the screen flicker when doing something GPU intensive? Try disabling the Nvidia card and do something intensive where the laptop using the Intel Graphics. If it runs slow but doesn't crash then it might be your graphics card.

Check here on how to identify if it is the GPU by looking for this error in Windows Event Viewer: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...3-owners-lounge.795990/page-156#post-11031074

My P670RP6-G is now just in hybrid mode. I couldn't rely on the HDMI port for an external display anymore since it is linked to the GPU so I ended up getting a USB dock with HDMI output using DisplayLink adapter/software.

And it always boots without problem after the recovery screen? that's strange. Take a look at baytotheapple's link and check your event viewer.

It'd be worth a shot to try a fresh W10 install, to rule out any problem with the OS, using drivers that used to work fine and check if it crashes there.

If it doesn't ever, crash on the games, then you can let it on Hybrid and then launch the game/software with nvidia's GPU (right button on the shortcut -> run with discrete/nvidia if I remember right...). It's not ideal, but it'd work until the problem gets worse.

temps still holding well and 1070 is still plenty until a proper amd 30xx combo comes out

I'm having a similar issue with my Eluktronics P670RS-G that started about a month ago. Reboots when it gets to the first Windows screen or after I enter my password. Usually I end up after 3 tries at the Recovery screen where I just select restart Windows and it works just fine. I do have one other issue that started the same time is the BIOS will freeze and still will freeze after using the laptop for a while and restarting to go into the BIOS, Win 10 loads normally after any restart after laptop has been running for a while.

Event viewer shows" Event 37 Kernel-Processor-Power The speed of processor x in group y is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for z seconds since the last report ".
(x, y & z values can change), shows event for all cores, always at the time of the first boot up of the day, never afterwards.
No GPU warnings or errors, happens using 1070 or Intel graphics. Laptop running off AC power most of the time but does it on battery when I tried it as well but still boots normally after the Recovery screen.

The BIOS always seems to freeze up on the Exit tab, I can go through the options on other pages fine until I get to the Exit tab. It saves any change though even though I never can get to respond to F4 or the save changes & exit option.

Fans all work, I take cover off a couple times a year to blow them out.

    Any suggestions?

    Sam

I have this same error (The speed of processor x in group y is being limited by system firmware) and random restart problem. My GPU is definitely dead as well and I'm not sure if the GPU dying was an isolated event or related to the random restarts. I gave up on trying to fix the issue and now just use it as a steam gaming laptop for my son.

It usually restarts a few min after after removing or plugging in the AC adapter. But once it's done restarting a few times (annoying my son) it stops resetting itself for the rest of the day.

I don't have any GPU errors in the event viewer. I guess I'll shoot an email off to Eluktronics and see what they say. I've tried to find a modded BIOS cause I'd like to see if forcing the CPU to run all cores at max fixes it. The stock BIOS is severely limited.

Edit: Nevermind, I manually downloaded the latest driver from the nvidia website and that worked.

    Driver updates.
I have a NP8173 with a GTX1070 mobile that I bought way back in 2016 from LPC Digital. I've been having some crashing issues with a few new games that I think are the cause of my Nvidia drivers being insanely out of date. I used to use Obsidian updater to keep things up to date, but that software updated and now needs to be purchased to work with the link to purchase inside the app not working.

I tried using geforce experience to install the latest drivers, but that is giving me an error message when I try to update. Is there any other source that I can get up to date graphics drivers for my laptop?

    Thanks!

That's usually the most reliable method (the manual download) though I'm surprised gfe was doing that to you.

GPU died a few months ago. The GPU doesn't show up in the device manager at all. Overall my Sager NP8172 is still working well and I'd like to keep using it for work and anything that doesn't require external display/games/video editing.

However I can't figure out why it sometimes has 2-3 random restarts (nothing in the error logs) before I can use it for a long period of time without restarting at all.

If I turn on the notebook sometime during the first 20 minutes of using it there are 2-3 restarts and then no more restarts for a few hours until I stop using it.

If it's just on but I haven't used it in an hour or so and I go back to using the machine then it once again has 2-3 restarts until I can use it for another few hours.

It's almost like the computer has to warm up or something.

Temperatures are fine. Nothing abnormal there.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I'm dumb. All I had to do was remove the Nvidia drivers. I guess the computer was trying to switch to the dead GPU and kept rebooting.

EDIT #2: Problem came back a week later but its not as bad as before.

I wonder if it is possible the CMOS battery is going bad? they can go bad every 5-10 years sometimes sooner on rare occasions. perhaps get a new CMOS battery, pop it in and see if that fixes the issue? if not... then I have no idea. take the old one out first to see if it has an exact item number first. usually they are all same generic round ones, fairly cheap.

Thank you I was about to try this but it looks like I figured it out.

I was randomly removing programs and noticed that the Nvidia software/drivers were still installed. I haven't seen them in the system tray for months. I removed them and the problem is GONE.

I'm an idiot for trying every single thing to troubleshoot except remove the Nvidia drivers. Hundreds of random reboots are now gone!

EDIT: Problem came back a week later but instead of 6-7 reboots its 1-2.

It's possible the GPU is spewing out garbage over the PCI-E connector, or a solder joint is loose somewhere.
