When it comes to compile time for the drivers, there's a list of known signatures for G-Sync systems. Similarly, it seems that there's multiple teams involved with the driver compilation.
More likely, they have multiple driver teams working on every 2nd version simultaneously and merging whatever fixes they're working on.

At some point, one of these driver teams evidently compiled with the wrong (or old) signature list. Team2 fixes this (e.g 362.00) but the correct signature list doesn't get merged back to the other team. Team1 releases their new driver (364.xx) using the old list again because they can't organize themselves.

With the driver that has the complexity of an operating system itself then you will get issues, though Nvidia does have a track record of being pretty slow on this front.

Hey, so as much as I've asked and tried, looks like I have no hope of getting a @Prema bios. Anyone know if I can use the mysn bios and if it allows for CPU voltage/clock modification?

I wouldn't be so harsh with @Prema. He's working his butt up to make us all happy. He should deserve at least a nice little Finka and some coins for a beer or many! Don't Forget, he's a one man army and working on many Projects simultaneously! :notworthy:

Did you try PM him directly?

For the XMG BIOS: get in touch with @XMG, if there's a Problem with the xmg Bios on non xmg machines.

I wasn't blaming him, he had already explained to me the reason the bios is only available through partners. I was saying I've asked around for it from other resellers since my own isn't a partner, and couldn't get it .

Seeing as it seems the thermal pads are causing contact issues with both the CPU and GPU could anybody tell me the thickness of each thermal pad so I can replace with some flexible ones that can compress and hopefully allow for better contact. Per this thread.
@Meaker@Sager do happen to know the thermal pad thicknesses for this model? Installation instructions for this kinda thing aren't covered in the service manual and I know there's a world of trouble if the wrong size is used.

If you intend to tweak it then I would order a sheet of 0.5mm and 1mm pads and stack a single layer if you need it, the pads leaving impressions should let you get the perfect fit.

Wouldn't the loss between the stacked pads negate a lot of the temperature savings or are you suggesting to do that to find the correct size and then replace with higher end?

It's a large surface area and the reduced width will make up for the stacking plus the core gets pure gain from being closer. Remember halving the gap will pretty much double potential transfer rate of the material.

    Hello all!

I ordered myself a 750DM 7 days ago from Metabox & I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival, probably tomorrow morning!

In anticipation I've been through the entirety of the ZM thread & also this thread, which have both made me feel confident in my purchase :) And in just a few weeks I'll be taking it with me on an overseas trip, so I'll have lots of time to get well handled on the machine. Thank you ;)

Hi guys can i know the idle temps of your 6700k? Trying to find out if mine is normal. If not i am considering selling it and getting a new 6700k maybe it will be cooler? Or is it crazy to expect a cooler processor?

Mine hovers around the 46-47C mark in an air-conditioned office (22-23C ambient). On a hot day with no AC it would float around 55C (30C+ ambient). I've never seen it lower than that, nor can I force it lower with increased air-flow (max fans etc). I assume that's just the DeltaT.

Chasing idle temps is a crapshoot though. The thermal output jumps around and too many small factors will change that temp hugely. Load temps are a far better indicator.

Is there a way to test how good the chip is? When i use prime and select 8 cores it goes to 96c. Ambient temp 32c. Posted my 6700k and someone wants to buy it and i could get a new one and lose around 20usd only.

Not really. 32C ambient is quite high. 96C under Prime is about normal to be honest. Nothing wrong with that chip I'd say. Have you tried undervolting? It makes a huge difference.

All the fantastic temps you read here are typically under air-conditioned or even straight up cold environments with undervolting. I can run the XTU benchmark or stress test + 150mv undervolt and it tops out at 77 degrees. Sounds great!....except ambient is 22C. Try that in an OZ summer where it's regularly over 40C and you can kiss that goodbye.

Besides that, Prime or any other CPU benchmark is hardly a valid real world test. Anyone who actually puts all cores of their laptop to work like that on a regular basis should be looking booking in for a reality check.

After a delid and repaste with clu on both the die and between the ihs and heatsink I tend to idle around the 50c to 55c mark in about 23 ambient. Before it was closer to the 55 mark. And this is a good chip, it would meet silicon lottery standards for 4.8GHz at around 1.42v but I tend it keep it at at 4.6 with it at roughly 1.25v, I'm somewhere around -55 offset. I did buy a retail chip for this and got lucky.

Just to point out the load delta has improved massively and it tops out at much lower temperatures than before but didn't do much for idle. Give me 5 min and I'll verify settings, Prime scores and temps.

This is why Ive been asking about thermal pads a few posts earlier, I don't belive sufficient contact is being made.

There isn't any known way of testing how good a clocker a CPU is other than trying, often those with lower the lowest default voltage can't be pushed as hard with extra volts (or has been the case with previous generations) I'm still very much trying to get my head around OCing on this beast. Boost multiplier rather than default multiplier is still a strange one to me. I like adaptive but I want to set a vcore and still have it down volt without load.

Hmm....that seems quite high for idle in that ambien. I'm currently set to -100mv and multipliers at 42/42/42/42. Ambient temperature is 21.3C as told by my crappy thermometer. Fans are on automatic as well.

XTU Settings are -100mv, 42/42/42/42, Turbo Boost power Max 110W.

    Prime95 Test after around 6 minutes(Large FFT, 8 threads):
    Core Temps (max): 89/91/87/86 C
    CPU Package Power: 109.93W
    Volts: 1.220/1.216/1.215/1.221/

Idle (after testing because doing it on a fresh boot is kind of cheating):
    Core Temps: 39/40/38/36 C
    Core Package Power: 12.552W
    Volts: 0.713/0.714/0.706/0.716
    Multipliers at temp test: 11/11/11/11

Worth noting the Prime95 test was hitting power limit throttling (110W) which capped it at around 4.1ghz across all cores.

I'm running PremaMod -30 offset on the core at 46/46/46/46.
I do get some throttling running Prime95 Large FFT. I'm not sure what power limiting I'm hitting since I've set everything to max in BIOS. (no idea why, it downclocks to 4.0GHz now and again) but my temps are about the same as yours even when it is running at 4.6, with the extra 50mV. Core voltage isn't varying with the clocks so temperatures aren't greatly affected by clock speeds.

I'll be changing the thermal pads, and doing a full repaste, I have both CLU and Grizzly kryonaut, IC Diamond and MX-4 around as well as Coollabs cleaning solution so everything will be sparkling and I'll do some tests to see about mounting pressure and check there's good contact between the die and IHS too since I never resealed that and I'm relying on the clamp to hold everything in place.
I think it was @Mr. Fox who suggested, wrapping something in clingfilm and measuring distribution, I've got some blu-tack to try with so let's see how that all goes once all my goodies arrive.

    Anybody have this issue before?

Bought this powerhouse from pro-star and I have a very weird issue that I have not been able to solve.

When I start the laptop, I get a black screen, it's on as there is power to it and the activity light and power light is on. It stays like this indefinitely.
The only way I can login is if I put it to sleep, Fn F12, then once it is a sleep press Fn F12 again and then immediately press F1 and Esc alternating right away. Once I do this then I get the normal login screen.

It was like this when I got the machine. Since then I have reinstalled Windows 10, and incrementally installed the drivers and software. Nothing seems to fix it.
I normally use an external mouse and it does not matter if it is plugged in or not. Behavior is the same. I have also powered without the battery and with no power cord. Still nothing. I've messed with power settings, etc. and still nothing.
I have not played with the BIOS settings yet.
If I restart the computer after I have already logged in it works like normal. This only happens when I cold boot.

All windows and nvidia updates are current.

This is due to turbo window period limit. I think our p750/770 has a turbo time limit.
I have experienced this when I used alienware m17x R4 and same thing happens here now.
I have not told @Prema about this because I think this is mobo limit.

i.e, if your cpu uses more than 118w, this time limit will start counting. After a min or two of overuse of cpu > 118w, the cpu will clock down to non-turbo max clock which is usually x40.

    So what does this mean?
    1) if you dont use over 118w, your cpu will hold the clock at the level you OCed for ever.
    2) if you do some long benches, your cpu can clock down to 4.0 if only your cpu uses > 118w during the benches.
    3) if you have nice silicon lottery CPU which usually consumes less voltage and also less power, your cpu will hold high as what your cpu can do with 118w for ever. e.g If your cpu consumes 110w @ 4.5 during a specific bench, your 4.5 clock will never clock down even after hours or days of benches.

I was very lucky to get my CPU which I used for my desktop and now for my p750dm. My 6700k can hold 4.6 for ever during any bench program including wprime 8cores because it only uses about 106w. And I can run this wprime hundreds of times but it wont crash.

    123.jpg

As you can see min CPU clock is 4.6 after wprime 8 core benches.

But I can't make 4.7 work this way because my CPU will consume more than 130w. The cpu will clock down after about two min of overuse.

I think this time limit is our laptop's mobo limit because even if we change the long/short turbo power (or turbo/max turbo power) limit to 200w, the power window time starts counting after 118w.

Don't forget to raise the current limits (Amps) in the BIOS "CPU VR" section, especially "PSYS PMax Current". :)

Yeah I did that. But I think that is not the problem. If current limit is the problem, the OC wont even hold the clock for 1-2 min, right?

I've set mine to 8191. I think a ThrottleStop install may have tinkered with it and despite uninstalling deleting ThrottleStop I haven't been able to get that back. I've tried reinstalling ThrottleStop, a few times, deleting the config file, turning it on and off with different settings applied but I can't seem to shake it regardless.
It feels like I had the same experience with the stock Eurocom Bios actually when using XTU.

Yes but so.. what can we do to make this not happen?
When I make the cpu power to 117w (regardless of clock), the clock remains for ever.
But If I raise the power to 119w (for example, by raising voltage), the clock will fall down after 128sec or so.
And in the bios, the max limit of turbo is 128sec. (unlike p870 which seems to be almost infinite number of time)

So I am guessing the this turbo window period countdown is starting at power of 118w.

    Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of obtaining a quote for a P750DM-G as an upgrade from the my P150SM-A. However after looking at the benchmarks, it doesn't seem like much of an increase moving from an 880M to the 980M and the 4810MQ to the 6700K.

There also seems to be a fair talk in this (massive!) thread and others about Pascal being a significant update that's perhaps waiting for.

    e.g.
    https://www.techinferno.com/index.p...upgrade-from-p750zm-to-p750dm-is-it-worth-it/

As such, would owners in this thread recommend:

    1) Upgrading to the P750DM-G?
    OR
    2) Waiting for the next round of laptops with Pascal?

Thanks in advance for any opinions, long or short.

EDIT: I should mention that the cost is not too much of a concern as long as it's "worth it" as I get this as a tax deduction i.e. cheaper, not money to burn. I also have a G-SYNC capable external monitor (Acer XB270HU), but can't seem to find any definitive answer on whether the 980M G-SYNC works with external monitors:

Youll likely get a lot of responses saying buy the 750dm-g for two reasons 1) there's always going to be something around the corner that seems worth waiting for, and 2) this is the p750dm-g lounge!

Yep fair points which I also expected. I don't mind this bias and it makes it more note-worthy when even P750DM-G owners say it's not worth it.

From my point-of-view the P150HM to P150SM-A was worth the jump (skipping the P150EM). I personally stick with Clevo laptops because they're awesome, so by posting in this thread I'm hoping to target P150SM-A owners that made the decision to get the P750DM-G.

Personally I think you should wait. Simply because the increased efficiency on the side of AMD (Polaris) may lead to AMD MXM cards again. This could have some pretty large ripple effects.

Namely, FreeSync may very well become the defacto standard. The only reason Nvidia get away with charging more for Mobile G-Sync is because they currently have a monopoly on the mobile GPU market. Mobile G-Sync is quite literally the same as FreeSync as far as technical implementation (unlike desktop G-Sync with dedicated hardware). Therefore, Clevo or any other manufacturers could offer FreeSync for nothing on the standard P700DM series without an added cost as they already have hardware that supports it.

Hell, you could probably enable FreeSync retro-actively for anyone who upgrades their MXM card to a Polaris one and has a supported LCD/TCON (most LG/Samsung panels qualify automatically). ie, if somebody bought any of the P700 non G-Sync and replaced their MXM with an AMD one they could probably get Freesync for nothing through a driver update.

G-SYNC or FreeSync is a minor consideration for me given that screen tearing doesn't bother that much and certainly not as much as FPS. Although I do understand that any type of 'sync' may help make lower FPS appear smoother and I did buy a G-SYNC capable external monitor. However the Acer XB270HU is really a good monitor even in the absence of G-SYNC anyway, which is the primary reason I purchased it.

Another associated consideration is that the addition of G-SYNC means the removal/lack of Optimus. To be honest though, Optimus caused me more headaches than benefits. For example the iGPU to dGPU and Fullscreen to Borderless Window gaming confused ShadowPlay a lot of the time. In addition, I found that whilst Optmius increased battery life to 2hrs (for watching movies), I really treat my 15' laptop as a "more portable DTR".

I've also steered clear of AMD cards after having numerous problems with them in the past in addition to what I believe is shoddy driver support (I know, I know, NVIDIA is not much better). Put this down to a 'brand preference' in the absence of any true substantiation.

    A)
This is why my primary questions about moving from a P150SM-A to the P750DM-G are in relation to the GPU (880m->980m) and CPU (4810MQ->6700K) upgrades, and then perhaps Pascal (although this is where "there's always something better around the corner" truism really comes into effect).

I appreciate the info though, it's good to know about FreeSync and the mobile Vs desktop G-SYNC differences which I wasn't aware of (researching now).

    B)
Also perhaps I wasn't as clear in my initial post:
Does the 980m G-SYNC work with a G-SYNC capable external monitor (such as the Acer XB270HU)?
I'm assuming here that Clevo route the P750DM-G 980M so that is bypasses Optimus, so that as long as your connecting your external monitor using DisplayPort (and not HDMI), G-SYNC "should" work on an external monitor such as the Acer XB270HU that also has G-SYNC capabilities right?!

This may change in the near future as well. Intel have confirmed they will take the FreeSync route which would work perfectly fine with Optimus/Hybrid modes. In Hybrid mode it's the Intel GPU that would be responsible for the display syncing. Intel have just yet to release a driver that does it.

I think in this case the "waiting" aspect is a real one. We are on the very tail end of the Maxwell lifecycle. Keep in mind, the 970M and 980M were first introduced at the end of 2014!
Timing your purchase when it's practical to do so is a far better strategy.

CPU-side is not a huge deal. Intel already confirmed the next refresh (Cannonlake from memory) will be supported on the same chipset and socket. Should only need a BIOS update on that front.

    This will work perfectly fine.

    B) Thanks!

    A) P150SM-A to P750DM-G performance increase worth it?

I took your comment to mean that "the wait is worth it" as Maxwell is at it's end. I guess it comes down me personally if I can be bothered waiting for Pascal and it's inevitable delay as discussed already here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/wait-for-pascal-or-just-go-with-the-980m.786756/
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/wait-for-mobile-pascal-on-sager-clevo.784373/

The additional comment you had about the CPU upgradability is interesting. Indeed some further research and it seems like although it's uncertain whether or not Pascal will be MXM compatible, it doesn't seem to make sense that NVIDIA would change the form factor if I understood those above threads correctly. Let alone if the performance of Pascal will live up to the hype or be delivered near the start of next year i.e. NVIDIA has milked the Maxwell line for all it's worth (although apparently they've ceased Maxwell card production right?).

I guess my primary concerns are, to ask the question another way:
    C) Is the performance moving from a 880m->980m and 4810MQ->6700K "combined" i.e. P150SM-A to P750DM-G noticeable for current generation games?

Ambiguous question I know. However my aim is to determine this comparison anecdotally now via the "gods of the NBR forums", as the benchmarks for both the GPU and CPU upgrades I have seen only show ~30% increases, and that's only individually as opposed to a "combined" in a system Vs system comparison. It would also be an easy answer if I wasn't happy with the P150SM-A (880M+4810MQ) performance which is on the border for me and game dependent (e.g. Rust Vs. ArmA3 Vs Siege etc.).

Regardless, it's good know that there is a potential safety-net if I do decide to purchase the P750DM-G in terms of upgradability, which is a factor I wasn't considering after being indoctrinated in lack of gaming laptop upgradability for the last 8 years. So I appreciate the comments. Emphasis on "potential".

@madrabbit711 I would suggest upgrade to an p870dm or atleast a p775dm because the 980m falls short of 60fps on many 2016 titles and VR. Also apart from the desktop 980. These could potentially support higher power Pascal cards as well. I personally get one of these( if you can't wait for Pascal to release in June)

Is there a way to know which one i have the 770dm or 775dm? I ordered the 770dm from lpcdigital but in bios i think it says 775dm.

    @jpsm
1)compare the lid with pics on Clevo website.
2)Look for the VGA power socket near the MXM card, its a 775 if it's there.

Tough luck, this BIOS confusion has been talked about before. It might cause issues so check with your reseller just in case.

Just to muddy the waters a bit more, you may also want to consider the possibility of more widespread external GPU units being available within the year. This could affect your weighing of upgrade-ability, performance, portability, cost, etc. (for better or worse). Personally, I was going to wait for Pascal, but it's so far off and the implementation is so uncertain that I went ahead and bought a P770-DM-G (just got it yesterday!). I figured chances are I would be able to upgrade graphics either with Pascal MXM board OR external GPU. Like you, I treat mine more like a semi-portable DTR so an external GPU would not be an issue. As Stooj wrote, CPU should be upgradeable with a BIOS update.

    Good luck!

@Irimi-Ai , congratulations on the laptop, just curious why you didn't go for the 775 instead?

    Thanks all for the advice.

@god1729: Aren't the 870DM and the 775DM 17 inch? I personally would like to stick with the 15 inch versions. The 980M falling short of 60fps is interesting. I'm currently at (and somewhat happy with) 40fps with my P150SM-A + 880M.

@Irimi-Ai: External GPU could be an option but I'd much prefer to have it all contained in portable (330W PSU...yikes) package if possible. Hence my comments on the P750DM-G MXM ports and it's potential compatibility with Pascal if they're also MXM (3.0b?).

What is the difference? They seem to be the same on the website. I ordered a u706 from mysn. So I should have a 771dm-g

The 775DM ("Wingman") is the little brother of the "Phoenix" (P870DM), which can be equipped with the GTX 980. ;)

I might have a look at mine tonight then. As my Bios says 775 is the power socket obvious?

1080p recommended specs for most 2016 AAA titles include desktop 970(10% better than 980m), and even that doesn't handle all settings maxed(at 60fps). VR is another consideration. Also if Pascal is MXM, the p75(0/1)dm and p77(0/1)dm will only support upto about 120W graphics, which "may" reduce your upgrade options. So go for the p750dm only if you you "absolutely need" to stick to 15 inches, if not then p870dm all the way (or p775dm if you can't tolerate SLI and an extra kilo )

Right, Sager is only offering the 770, and not the 775DM. I'm not 100% sure, since we sell Sager as well, but I believe the 770 and 775 use the same BIOS though. Maybe someone can correct me if I am off on that though.

Using the same BIOS for both isn't safe apparently.
