Hopefully, that means a GPU refresh and model name change for the Clevo P870DM-G and not the elimination of the only laptop in the world worth purchasing since the release of the Alienware M18xR2 and Clevo P570WM. If they are really going to kill it, hopefully it won't be replaced by something thinner, lighter and with a worthless BGA CPU. If the latter is true, my comments about the P870DM-G potentially being the last laptop I would be willing to purchase may be a self-fulfilling prophecy. No way in hell I would every pay money for something smaller, thinner and lighter with BGA CPU, or with only one MXM slot. (Already learned my lesson on that thinner and lighter and single MXM stupidity with the P750ZM... never again.)
I wonder why they would add another port that hardly anything uses? Since Clevo crippled the one TB3 port on the P870DM-G so that it cannot support an eGPU even that one is already darned near worthless, LOL.

EXACTLY. Never had much interest in an eGPU, and definitely not a proprietary piece of crap connected to a crippled turdbook. BUT, hooked up to a Über-beast that works super great without it, an eGPU is not such a bad option to have just to be geeky and all that. Now, whenever I hear about something being blocked or locked, it makes we want it just to teach 'em a lesson about acting stupid and being stingy with features... even if I didn't want it at all before and still don't actually want it for real... makes me want it just for spite.
I hate anything being locked. When I got my new phone a couple of months ago, before I even activated it I starting Googling for root instructions. My wife was like, " Honey, watcha doin' babe?" I told her and she said, " WHAT?!? It's brand new! You haven't even taken it out of the box yet!" And, I said, " That's right and if I can't root it before I use it, then it's a worthless piece of trash and I'm sending it back, unopened." Twitter, Facebook and all the other totally worthless bloatware app crap was deleted immediately.Last edited: Jul 28, 2016 -
I hear ya bro. The fact it has a TB3 in it means it should play ball with an eGPU. When I read it had been blocked (just for greed) I started wanting to teach them a lesson too. It sounds like abit of an afterthought that they thought it should remain locked down.
"Don't sell me hardware and change the deal once you've got your greedy little mitts on the money" -
The way I look at it, if I pay for it then it's mine and nobody has any right whatsoever to decide what I can and can't do with it. If the manufacturer takes active steps to attempt limit what I can do, then they are filthy scumbags. I have my own license agreement... It's called " once you take my money you lose any and all rights to have a say about anything I do with or to what you sold me" LOL.

That last line rings loudly with me regarding the PS3. Sony sold it with a crap ton of cool features, then slowly whittled away at them with each firmware "update". Now it's just a decent bluray player. -
Mine still dual boots

Do you play online with it?
-
Who the hell plays online on a console?? :O
J/K im weird that way, i only play a few competitive games online CSGO/DOTA2 and OW. I never even tried going online on the PS3 tbh. Only on my XBONE for Halo.Mr. Fox likes this. -
At least the PS3 had free online play and backwards compatibility (at release).
Sony and MS are now absolutely having their way their customers - high-fiving and bending them over with subscriptions to play online.. Lol.. 'gotta pay the toll troll'
Worse part is these console kiddies skull down the coolaid and think it's a good deal.
Don't get me started on the 'HD remake' scams.
I can smell MS plotting a way to monetise W10 games too.
Vulcan already working it's magic on Doom was good enough evidence for me to see that DX12 is nothing but a stale old carrot being dangled. MS can keep their 60fps capped games and shove their DX12 where W10 came from.
W7 is now my primary boot and Mr 6700k is happy with that. I really wish Linux could make a more fully fleshed build and start competing in a serious level.Ashtrix, bloodhawk, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -

I would be surprised if there were more backward compatibility issues with a more pc arch running now.

How is the TB3 port crippled for eGPU? It was kind of a nice pipe dream to think one could add a external unit via TB3 at a later date when the gtx980 started to show its age and no new MXM cards available/compatible. Is there a link with a description of the issue please? I'm not capable of fixing it, mind you, but sounds like an interesting read.

is it me or is this laptop no longer listed on both sager and xoticpc's sites?

They pulled it. I noticed this as well yesterday afternoon when looking up tech support phone numbers.
I think the general consensus is there will be a laptop refresh soon, possibly with Pascal GPUs.

If these are getting discontinued already, will we finally get Prema to go public with PremaMod BIOS?

I don't know about the Clevo Laptop's TB3 port itself being crippled for eGPUs, but I do know that individual eGPU housing manufacturers, like Razer and ASUS, could restrict their individual eGPU housings to only work with coupled ASUS and Razer laptops.
I'm not sure if any other eGPU manufacturers are making open-ended TB3 eGPU housings at the moment. I guess it depends on the sales/success of the initial ones we see?
But then, Clevo could make their own eGPU housings for Clevo laptops if that was the case. -

You mean locked in the laptop mobo itself? Locked in the BIOS? Drivers?
What's different about the Clevo P870DM-G Thunderbolt 3 port that doesn't support eGPU housings? -
why would there a need for eGPU when 980 or 1080 w/e comes with this machine is plenty powerful enough. not to mention we might get sli coming up in the refreshed model with some adjustment just like m18x to r2.

That's it. "Cui bono".

I kind of agree with you. But I also disagree... just because. If the port is there is should be usable for whatever a person wants to use it for. That should be a good enough reason. If functionality is artificially blocked that always sucks and somebody needs to be hung out to dry for doing dishonorable things. That mere fact that it was blocked is despicable.electrosoft, Chronokiller, Georgel and 1 other person like this.

the only thign i'd use the port for external transfer between laptops but i dont even know how that works.

some example pls

From what I saw the laptop gained that port and didn't loose any to gain it so it's all good. Doesn't hurt to be able to charge two Nexus phones.

heh out of all those, im only interested in nvme ssd external enclosure via tb.
-
Yeah for a lot of people most them aren't even remotely necessary. But for people like me who are anal about internal component temps, i would hook up a beefy card externally and overclock the shizznet out of it , than OC the internal one and deal with cooling limitations.ole!!! likes this.

Forgive me and my ignorance, but I feel I must ask you something. I'm having a hard time finding an answer elsewhere on the interwebs. I'm sure you're exhausted getting peppered with questions about Pascal all the time. But this question simply cannot wait, NDAs and nvdia be damned.
