Well I am seeing multiple reports of GSync not being smooth/not working well with SLI compared to single GPU. Also SLI support is just too flaky recently, even Fallout 4 is not supporting SLI properly for now. I don't want to deal with the imminent future of SLI as well, for example Unreal Engine 4 does not natively support SLI, ARK Survival Evolved (UE4) cannot SLI etc. Being forced on a single card is just a big no for me, so a single GTX 980 seems to be the way to go for now especially if there is no need for 1080p+. Also I would not want Nvidia tech being disabled just because of SLI, such as MFAA. SMAA 2TX does not work for SLI as well. Also VR latency is better on a single GPU, something to consider if you are looking at VR as latency will ruin immersion and give you motion sickness in VR. Games also do not seem to trouble an OCed 980 (Desktop) at 1080p, just cannot justify 980m SLI at the moment especially when the price is compared.

TLDR: Hence I went with a single GTX 980 (Desktop) for my GSync P870DM(G).

75Hz for 1080p and 60Hz for the 4K. I noted that and other details in the in-process review of the Sky X9. Just finished thermal tests with overclocked CPU. Will start overclocked benching tonight. Results will be posted soon. I will throw a few teasers out if it takes more than a day or two.

    Mr fox one question,
the eurocom x9 will support the new g skill memory 2800 Mhz?
    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/gskill-2800-mhz-ddr4-sodimms,30459.html

    And about 4k display,
Mark from eurocom said me that microsoft will release an update for fix the 4k resolution dpi problem.
And its more better the 4k also without g sync..
I have some doubt.. What you think?

4K Display: I have no idea... my personal preference is the 1080p 75Hz G-SYNC display. Don't hold your breath when it comes to believing a display scaling fix will come from the Redmond Mafia. They botched Windows 8/8.1 and 10 bad enough already. They haven't fixed display scaling and the existing aesthetic atrocities on these operating systems so far, so holding out for anything to be fixed on any Micro$loth OS released since Windows 7 is optimistic. I'm not confident they can do anything well. But, there is always a chance. I'd rather be surprised by their success than disappointed by their failure to deliver.

Memory: It is hard to know. Memory compatibility is always an unknown. I have seen "planned" high performance SO-DIMM modules for enthusiast laptops that ended up never being released before, so don't believe it until it is actually available and being sold. Like they said in the press release...
Also bear in mind that as module capacity (size) increases, high speed stability sometimes decreases. The best, at least the safest, advice I can give on a new model without a lot of examples to base your buying decision on is to buy the memory you want from the vendor you are buying the laptop from whenever possible. By doing so, compatibility is a given subject to your warranty. If it does not work right they won't ship it, or they miss a bug that wasn't detected before it was shipped they will take care of it without a hassle if problems are discovered later on. Otherwise, be sure you can get a refund if you buy the memory from another source. If you buy something that doesn't work right in your machine it's going to be tough to sell it because it may not work well in other machines. You can always let someone else be the guinea pig and if the memory works for well them you can upgrade later. Another benefit would be that prices will likely be better by the time all of the guinea pigs have proven it works well (or does not, as it may turn out to be).

That said, I have already shown that I can clock the Kingston HyperX Impact DDR4-2400 (4 x 4GB) modules in this EUROCOM SKY X9 beast to 2666 and 2800. In case you did not see it before...

@Prema is making outstanding progress on the firmware. I am working on the thermal testing and overclocked benchmarking.
Should have that up for the review this week (remember, I work at another job during the day).

Here is a teaser from the thermal testing.

The Sky X9 is the P870DM. The Sky X6 is the P770DM.

I know Eurocom was working on a custom unlocked/overclocking BIOS for the P5 Pro (P750ZM), not sure if they'll do the same for these.

Max fans. I never run benchmarks with auto fans. CPU seems to be a great fit with the heat sink. I have not tested with pressure sensitive film because the thermal results are very good. I generally only check that when I have thermal management issues.

Fair enough. Just checking to compare my temps with it... My 4.5 4790k has much better temps at the moment, but trying to figure out if delid and lapping would bring it down more on the skylake (or rather how much more). I'll post a delided 6700k pic shortly so you can see position (it's left to right as thought, but shorter, wider, and slightly positioned to the left).

One of thise is BGAtel. Not good ;) The rest is okay :D.

@Mr. Fox What ambient temperature have you under those bench/temperature tests? I also se at @4.3Ghz Cinebench give higher/likewise temperatures than Wprime 1024 but this change dramatically if you go up to @4.5Ghz. Normally should Wprime 1024 push temperature higher than Cinebench also at @4.3Ghz.

Always ugly when you something like this. A i7-4980Hq at full speed. "CPU at about 83C and GPU at about 72C in a moderately warm room. 2.8GHZ, full clocks all CPU cores held with a game or Furmark running, though Furmark causes a bit of GPUthrottling, no real reason, temps are fine. 3.1GHZ if just Prime95, all CPU cores" who want this in a high end laptop? Not me.

Be mad at the TDP restrictions, not the interface. All the anger is directed at the wrong part. Intel could have just as easily locked the TDP on socketed parts too.

This is not the whole truth. BGA interface was created so that the cpu/gpu better was adapted/fitted a new modern thinner notebook design. Also a cheaper solution for OEMs. Ingeniously entering TDP restriction in chips because of this. Not upgradeable and costly if only CPU or GPU is broken. As said; Many reasons to hate BGA.

Nice! I'm going to delid this one. So, no solder like Ivy-E? If so, that's great... just cut the seal around the edge and go? Should be fairly easy to do with a razor blade, and it looks as though there are no surface-mount components to worry about knocking off.

Exactly! They only use solder on Xeon (possibly E5 and above, unsure on E3) and extreme editions (unlike amd which solders their consumer line on the higher end). Without surface mounted fivr, you have no worries like with the Haswell series (I scared myself with a slip on the arrow corner where the fivr is beyond the die, but it turned out fine). You should get an extra 3-5 degrees out of it! :) this leaves only the question of fujipoly 17W/mk and lapping, which together MAY (not guaranteeing) give another 3-5. But this definitely could convince me to pick one up once the 180W sli is available! :)

Edit: Btw, @Mr. Fox, Skylake is eligible to submit all benchmarks on any OS on HWBot.org, if interested.

Prostar quick vid of the 980m sli

Graphics score seems to be on the lower side for 980m SLI, wonder if this is due to Win10 and the new OS being on it. Anyone have any info on Win10 showing lower scores?

Are you running bare die? Does the heat sink still fit snug enough without the IHS? Since all mobile CPU are bare die anyway, I don't understand the logic of putting that piece of crap back on again. Seems like it would only be an impediment. Should be much cooler running bare die and I don't know why it would be more of a risk that an ordinary laptop CPU. Maybe on a desktop with a big heat sink flopping around it might be a risk.

Well, to put it into perspective, here are the dimensions compared to the AW18

    P870DM 428x308x45mm, 10.56lbs
    AW18 456x328x57mm, 12lbs

However, keep in mind the AW18 is sporting an 18.4" display panel.

    Noob in the house.

Does anyone have any idea on how long it takes Origin PC to release their new laptops? For instance, how long did it take for them to release the Eon-17X after the P770DM was released?

I would assume they are going to have their own version of the P870DM...maybe a new Eon 17-SLX?

Sitting here every day, waiting and waiting for it to show up on their page. I know I can get it from other sites like Mythlogic and whatnot, but I had my heart set on an Origin for a minute now. I don't care if it's more expensive lol.

    Anyone have any ideas?

The zm would need a modified heatsink for bare die. The 870dm might as well. To run bare die, you need to remove the retention bracket (the die sits lower than it). You need to create your own bare die strap or get one of the msi bare die kits from their premium mother boards. If the mounting arms sit too high, you need to gap the bracket on the other side of the mother board to reduce the height of the mounting arms. This cannot exceed the thickness of the thermal pads on the components by the cpu (as the components height would impede contact with the die). So you need an accurate measure of the ihs thickness on skylake (pull out the caliper). The risk on desktops is the pressure of large heatsinks our overtightening. This can crack the die. So that is the long end short. Now, with that said, Idon'tcare shows a couple degree difference on a desktop. Click on the tim link in my signature at NBR to get to the detailed review of TIMs, lapping, and bare die. Hope that helps. And technically, you don't need the strap as the heatsink will apply the minimal pressure to engage the cpu to the socket most likely, but it should be mentioned for the average user. Also pressure sensitive film should be used to verify pressure in certain circumstances to make sure the CPU is in the socket. I have not checked the Intel white papers on the socket bracket pressures with skylake, but have them for Haswell in either the 750 or 770zm threads at NBR.

Edit: I'll give you the info directly after work.

I think one of the main reasons is more strength to help support big, heavy desktop heat sinks that hang as a heavy weight on the CPU. On a tower with a vertical motherboard, that heat sink weight can probably be detrimental and put a lot of pressure on the CPU itself. On a horizontal orientation, probably not a big deal.

It's all about max pressure on the socket and on the die itself. The ihs had a buffer between it and the die and distributes the psi to the contact area of contact between the ihs and pcb, preventing crushing the die, while also giving a larger contact area for great dissipation, even though not as effective as bare die on heat dissipation.

@Mr. Fox, I forgot to mention this may pull gently down on the heat pipes. Take that into consideration if you are going bare die or see if there is padding or a shroud under the fins to make it sit lower. If gentle, it should not make a bend or dent in the heat pipes. Just be aware of this when performing this mod if you decide to.

@mythlogic - when will you carry the 180W SLI version of this beast? Also, do you have pricing available for this option at this time (or a ballpark)?

Yes but at the speed that those samsung 950 pros go I figure most normal apps and gaming and I won't notice a difference

Get it from elsewhere.. Origin PC are really overpriced... Honestly don't know why people waste money buying from them..... Even Mythologic is better value for money then Origin lol..

Yes pretty much, I advise people to go for the largest single drive they can and then only raid up when you can't get bigger.

@Meaker , Do you know if they have heatsinks for the 180W desktop 980s for this machine?

If they exist for this machine or will be available on the future. I know the desktop variant for the 775dm should fit, have heard mention of two power connectors in the 870, but the 775 is the only modified heatsink I've seen for the lower power desktop variant. So, my question is whether a heatsink for this machine and the lower powered desktop gpu exist, and if so, possible future availability.

Just checked. Those heatsinks are only compatible with the 980m. They do not have the odd shape for the 980 variant for the 775dm. Just trying to find out if Clevo will give support to my envisioned config, or if a custom heatsink would need designed.

Edit: they might be able to cover the 980 variant. They just cut out around the power connector on both of the other heatsinks mentioned...

The shape looks generic enough to me that you could use thermal pads on either config to make it match. The 980 shape is not that different.

So I was told that clevo actually sells their stuff to Sager.. So my question is.. Is the Sager Sager NP9870-S 17inch has the same issue than this Clevo? The awful 15inch keyboard on a 17inch chassis or does the Sager model has a keyboard design to fit the 17's?

    Thanks.

Guys yesterday as I was online watching how my P870DM was being built, at the final stage I connected to HIDevolution/to my system via TeamViewer to do some final touches to the OS settings, but when I ran task manager/performance, I noticed Windows is reporting the CPU speed was @ 3.9GHz even though it was set to the high performance plan. Very annoying, I don't wanna see anything less than 4 GHz :( Does one need to play with XTU settings or something to keep the system running at or above 4GHz at all times?
