Today I broke my GTX 1080 in my P870TM1-G.

What would be the absolute cheapest MXM card that I could buy just to get the system working again?

I assume it must be a Pascal card?

I am also searching for 1000 series MXMs, my question is do you need the power connection like clevos seem to use ?
or will the non external power cards work OK.
I reckon they will work but will exhibit more throttling (probably not 1080s) MXM good for 75W ?

    IceFalcon
the non power PASCALS are a bit cheaper and more available , but you are looking at 300-400 USD for a 1060M.
Maybe grab a 1060M then it can slot into your slave if you get a better card. 1070M seem scarce.
The odd 2060M around cheaper than 1070/1080m.

I bought a ZOTAC magnum mini pc with a 1060M as my VR setup, it was barely used, for around 400 USD, probably cheaper than buying a 1060M card on its own !
Pretty sure zotac mxm is not externally powered. Going to open it up tomorrow for a look.

I guess finding a dead laptop with a pascal would be a good option for you, MSIs good option eg GT80/83

Non power connector cards should work.

From my bit of research 1080M has to have external power, 1060m,1070m was a clevo (and maybe MSI thing) to include external power connection and take the load of mobo pcie/mxm power supply, good idea if overclocked

The clevo cards won't fit in the older chassis as the shape is different regardless. You need a standard shape ones, some quadro cards are an option.

Tried the zotac 1060m in slave (no external power on this card)
    no go black screen etc
Question does the P870 only run a SLI configuration or can both GPUs run independently ?

    Bios settings ?

Cards can run independently but a card does need to be in the primary slot if you only have one.

I have an EVOC P870DM-G that gracelessly shuts down every time I unplug it from the AC/DC adapter. This puppy is long in the tooth, so (being mentally lazy) I figured it was the battery Unfortunately, a new battery did not fix the problem.

When plugged in (with the new battery installed) and I hover over the Power, Outlet Icon, "No battery is detected" is displayed. If I click on that icon, it shows the battery being 100% charged.

    Thanks,

    Paul

p.s., If it matters, the manufacture date for the new battery is: November 2018

No, I haven't ... thanks for the suggestion!

Unfortunately, things are kind'a hectic at the moment, so it'll be a little while before I can get around to a fresh install ... sigh.

Take an image backup and roll back if it's no good.

Do a full CMOS reset of the bios. Flexy charge option may gone bad.

Cards can run independently (you can just disable SLI if you do video encoding/decoding for example)

PS: Find someone to do the MOD for Clevo 3.1b compatibility. totally worth it. After that you can upgrade the DM to 2080, even to 3080 with the right cooling plate.

Sorry for late reply, but if you are not absolutely 100% sure that the mobo is dead, have you tried?

    1. Flashing a stock bios with a programer.

    2. Booting with only 1 ram stick (try in each port of the 4 and try to boot, one eventually will work). Had this problem once, apparently CPU was not sitting flush in the socket and dual channel did not work alas not booting with 2 ram sticks in dual channel. Tried with only one and eventually booted. Had the same symptoms: black screen - fan ramp up - shutdown (no beeps whatsoever).

    Worth a try.

It's worth taking the CPU out and checking the socket looks ok.

Sorry guys but I just picked up a Clevo/Sager P870DM-G. Can someone point me to the right direction on getting or down loading the mod bios so this laptop can accept the 8th gen CPU. Right now it has the 6700k in and I read somewhere here someone mod theirs to run an 8700k. Also, I have {2} 980 desktops that I'm trying to make work in it too...........thanks
