Hey guys - for the 2.5" hdd slots, will 15mm thick drives fit or is 9.5 the thickest?
-
Hello everyone.
GTX980 "desktop"(85mm×115mm) SLI work on P870DM? -
I have never thought about trying but I don't think they will fit as their would be a piece of frame in the way but if you have one laying around it would be worth a shot to see.
Just don't know yet, if the cards do fit then an abundant amount of fabrication and testing would be needed for a compatible heatsink design that would work in the real world. -

Sadly in most parts of the world you can count on the "bad guys" wearing the badge.
The last thing a sane person would do is go and declare your own stuff, because if you do and especially if you have all the paper work and rightfully have not to pay a dime, they will simply keep it all, until you pay the mandatory bribe to get it back.
Last time I was traveling they kept my stuff for 3 months because I refused to pay the (made-up) 130% import tax (or the bribe) on my own stuff (had all the paperwork to prove it), as it simply was against the law of that country to charge me at all...had to go way up in the goverment to get it back...go figureLast edited: Feb 8, 2016Ashtrix, TomJGX, LoneSyndal and 2 others like this. -

Ok, my P870DM-GS has been ordered. As I impatiently wait for this thing to arrive, I am wondering what should I do when I get it?
1. I'm assuming this thing comes fully loaded/assembled and ready to go? Or will I have to install the OS and drivers first?
2. If it is pre-loaded and ready to go, should I wipe it all and then do a fresh install anyway? Juuuuuuuust in case it might have some nefarious stuff installed in it?
(I've never ordered a laptop before. I honestly have no idea what I'm getting in the mail. I'm used to building Desktop PCs with parts from Newegg and Amazon, so if I'm getting a box full of unassembled Clevo laptop parts, that's fine with me!)
3. Should I undervolt the CPU 1st thing? I read the stock stuff is a little high, leading to unnecessary temps. Or will it not really matter? I'm not a benchmarker type, but I am a maxed-graphics gamer type, which will probably makes things hot anyway. I'm getting mine through a non-Prema reseller (Prostar), so I'll have to use some 3rd party tuner? Any suggestions? Or is stock fine as-is?
4. I'm going to toss in a 2.5" Samsung 850 Evo in the extra drive slot. My plan is to run the OS off the M.2 SSD (250GB), run all my games off the 850 EVO SSD (500GB) and store all my videos/movies/music/whatever media files on the 1 TB HDD. Is this a good plan? Should save me lots of room.
5. What's this about obstructed grills? Should I peel off the backplate and look for that film taped to the grills? Why would it be there in the first place? Just to block out dust?
Anyway, just bored and daydreaming about my Clevo. Looking for a Day-1 To-Do list for when this thing arrives and steals my life away.
Thanks!Last edited: Feb 8, 2016 -

Depends how you ordered it, with an OS or without.
Anyway, the latest drivers are here since the Clevo servers are super slow:
Clevo P870DM/DM-G Drivers Mirror
As for the voltage, the stock is too high but nothing wrong with running it like that. I advice you not to install Intel XTU otherwise your fans will not stop spinning at full blast even if the CPU isn't hot. You can solve that temporarily by changing the fan from the overclocking profile to automatic but they start spinning fast again randomly on their own. Uninstalling XTU doesn't solve this issue, only a full format would.
To fully format your laptop, see my guide here:
NBR Windows 10 Clean Installation Guide
To install Windows in RAID mode, you need to copy the RAID driver onto the USB Flash Disk, when you get to the partition selection screen, you won't see them, just click load driver and navigate to the RAID driver folder.
Finally, since you did not order your laptop from Eurocom,HIDevolution or Mythlogic, you are stuck with the Clevo BIOS which has 0 options to customize so my advice for you is to wait for Prema when/if he releases the Prema Mod BIOS to the public before trying to mess with your system as I really advice you not to install XTU, just my 2 cents worth after owning 2 of these laptops.Last edited: Feb 8, 2016Netherscourge, god1729, Sebastiao Liparizi Neto and 1 other person like this. -

I think its always best to do a clean fresh OS install.
Mine came singing but after a while had some windows login problems I thought were something completely different. I'm glad that Eurocom included a usb stick with all the drivers.
Also, there's only 2 m.2 slots. So, if you have a raid system its already using those two, no place for a third one unless you're using a sata Drive for the third place. I have a 250gb xp941 fo OS, a 850 pro 250gb for games and a 1tb Hdd for content storage. Any day I'll install another 850 pro, but on the sata slot for kore games haha.
In your place, I would:
1- install a clean OS install
2- then install drivers
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/clevo-p870dm-dm-g-drivers-mirror.786094/
3- use aeroglass (in case of windows 10) and do what @Mr. Fox sugests here (before conecting on the internet the first time: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ers-lounge-phoenix-has-arisen.781814/page-257
4- then allow windows to update everything and itself.
5- mess with it for a while install your stuff, and only then do the undervolt, before you start gaming.
Though probably it will do, its not certain that -150mv will be stable in every system, and you don't want a unstable system while installing stuff.
Mine to be stable with -150, I had to turn off C states for instance, and you can't do that on the stock bios.

EDITED: Sorry, I corrected - it's a single 850 Evo SSD on one M.2 drive. My other 850 EVO will be going into a 2.5 sata drive bay.
Also - mine is coming with "Windows 10 Home 64-bit with DVD Recovery Media". So, I'll probably do a fresh install either way via a USB drive.
BTW - Thanks for all your help! I can't imagine where I'd be without you guys! This information you've all supplied here is invaluable!Last edited: Feb 8, 2016Sebastiao Liparizi Neto likes this. -
Just curious is the m.2 drive the 850 pro or the 950 pro(NVMe). If it's the 850 pro why would you get one when you have a 850 evo already?

Sorry, guys. I think I'm confusing myself and everyone else with all the 850 formats.
I already have an 500GB Samsung 850 Evo 2.5" notebook SATA 3 drive. That's going to be one of my slave drives.
The Clevo I ordered comes with an 250GB Samsung 850 EVO mSATA M.2 SSD (OS drive) AND a 1TB 2.5" SATA HDD drive.
So, I'm going to have the M.2 Evo for the OS, an SATA Evo for game installs and an SATA HDD for just movie/music/media altogether.
Hope that straightens everything out!god1729 and Sebastiao Liparizi Neto like this. -
Thanks for the clarification. Now may I ask why you've not opted for an NVMe boot drive (price or otherwise). And what is the rationale in using two of separate SSDs for OS and games (and filling slots) vs just using your 850pro and keeping m.2 drives free for future PCIe ssd upgrades. I've seen many others go for two separate drives in the forum and I'm wondering if it is really worth it (also considering DMI bottleneck for NVMe dribes).

Price is going to be the big factor here as the 250GB 850 evo is hard to beat on price. The DMI bottleneck is over 3GB/sec so a pair of SATA III drives wont scratch that too much
There is no real issue going with a single large drive though, you likely wont notice the difference between that and two drives (that are not working together even).Sebastiao Liparizi Neto likes this. -

The model I ordered with the single M.2 drive was cheaper and there were no configuration options at the same price point. The next one up I saw included a 500GB EVO M.2 drive and more RAM (32GB instead of 16GB), but it also jumped the price up another $450. [EDIT - and it's the GTX-980M SLI GPU, not the 980 Desktop one] I guess could just use my existing 500GB 850 Evo for OS/games and save the M.2 for a later upgrade (get two for Raid or something like that). I was just throwing ideas around. I don't even have it yet. I hadn't considered any sort of bottleneck to be honest. I definitely want a 2nd drive for media purposes, but I could just use the slower HDD for that I suppose.Last edited: Feb 8, 2016god1729 likes this. -
I was actually talking about two NVMe drives (independently or RAID 0)like the 950 pros.

I'm curious how big of a total % performance gain I'm looking at with the Clevo.
I'm upgrading from an older Desktop PC. Here's the spec and the Clevo upgrade:
OLD CPU: i7 920 3.0ghz Nehalem on a X58 Mobo (SATA2.0, PCIe 2.0, USB 2.0)
NEW CPU: i7 6700K 4.0ghz Skylake mobo (SATA3.0, PCIe 3.0, USB 3.0 & 3.1/Thunderbolt)
OLD RAM: 12GB DDR3 1333mhz
NEW RAM: 16GB DDR4 2133mhz
OLD GPU: GTX 770 4GB (OC'd)
NEW GPU: GTX 980 8GB
OLD MONITOR: ASUS 1080p LCD 60hz max (with lousy speakers and a bad Headphone jack)
NEW MONITOR: LG? 1080p IPS Matte with G-Sync 75hz+?
Honestly, the only thing I'm going to probably miss is my big Saitek Cyborg Gaming Keyboard, but the A and S keys on that have worn away anyway.

Gaming will be a pretty big jump.
Compare the fps on a game you play currently is an easy way to find out.
My desktop system is acyually stronger than my Sky X9 (3930k at 4.7ghz, 2x gtx780 sli OCd) but both with gpu overlcocked the Sky X9 runs Witcher 3 with 15fps more, both stock, the Sky X9 runs with 10 fps more.
The 2x 780 are stronger than the 2x 980m, but they consistently get Better fps on most games. But the 780 would bench better (I still hadn't benched the Sky X9) -
Ask why is it non warranty based?
-
I did, I'm waiting for a reply.
It's even more concerning they said only one card is non-functional. From our testing both cards were for sure non-functional. I don't want to receive back a laptop that still has an issue.Sebastiao Liparizi Neto and GTVEVO like this. -

So for the infamous Killer Doubleshot-Pro chipset that has caused lots of controversy in multiple platforms...
I see a lot of people recommending to skip installing the full suite software and just install the base drivers, manually directing to the driver folder.
Is that just for the LAN? Or for both the LAN and WLAN/BT drivers? I see the Clevo driver page has two different driver packages, one for the LAN and another for the WLAN/BT, respectively. Should I do a manual install for both of those? Or just the LAN drivers?
Or have they released updated drivers/software suite that fixes all the problems people were complaining about? If so, what version of that should I grab?
Thanks. -
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
for both obviously, you don't want that bandwidth network filter driver or whatever they want, the only thing it controls is disconnecting your connection randomly.Last edited: Feb 9, 2016 -
For the Killer wireless card, should be safe to install the latest suite and disable the bandwidth limiter in the card's settings from adapter properties.hmscott likes this.
-
@Netherscourge
Or, take 2 minutes and run the automatic Upload/Download speed test built in to the Killer Network Manager, and that will tune the Killer Bandwidth Control (QOS) software correctly.
The lag issue is because people don't tune the Killer Bandwidth Control (QOS) Upload / Download speed settings, and the defaults of 1500mbps Upload/Download produce wrong calculations.
You can tune invidual application priorities, but I find leaving them at normal works well enough - video stream / audio streaming keeps working even with a dozen downloads happening from several applications at the same time.
This very useful feature can tell you were the other wireless signals are around you, what center channel they are on - usually the default - and then you can move high/low of their center channel to get a clear/clearer space for your wireless router.
The Wifi disconnect issue was solved with a bug fix update, the current Suite version doesn't have the disconnect problem - a number of people with the disconnect problem before this have verified it's working now -> Zero Disconnects.
The 2 software packages, the Suite is for Wifi/Ethernet, and the BT package is for Bluetooth only. The drivers only package is for Wifi/Ethernet only - it's missing the Network Manger / Packet filter for QOS.
The QOS software is useful when you fill up the internet pipe with downloads / uploads, like when downloading games / updates / torrents for OS ISO's.
The Killer QOS software makes sure your browsing and Video streaming still work while the internet is 100% utilized. It's been helpful to me on numerous occasions.
If you want to disable stuff in a network adapter properties, I would suggest disabling the MS QOS - it doesn't work and reduces overall bandwidth by 10-20%, and if you don't use IPv6 disable that, for me I also disable all the MS Discovery-Printing-Filesharing stuff.
I keep Killer Bandwidth Control (QOS), IPv4, and the VMware / Virtualbox features enabled for the Wifi/Ethernet adapters, all the other features are unchecked.Last edited: Feb 9, 2016hexum23, god1729, LoneSyndal and 3 others like this. -

Ok, thank you! I'll be sure to refresh the scanner every so often! (Or whenever I'm plugged in or unplugged) -
It's useful to re-run the speed test when you move Wifi connections, or to/from ethernet - check to see if the speeds are the same.
If the speeds are essentially the same, you can keep the one setting for both Wifi and Ethernet, and other connections at the same throughput.
If Wifi speed is less than ethernet, try configuring your router to use 40mhz channel width for more throughput, and re-run the test - you will need to reconnect.
Setting to N only can help too. Moving to 5ghz helps the most if your path to the wireless router isn't occluded with too many obstacles or thick walls.Last edited: Feb 9, 2016god1729, Netherscourge and Mr. Spock like this. -

I'm surprised they didn't program the scanner to just run automatically after every reboot, log-in and maybe during hourly uptime intervals, just make sure nothing has changed. Or, is there an auto-scan option in there too?
-
It's not needed, once the speed is tested it remains constant.
It's the speed of the connection maintained by your ISP, which doesn't change unless you change your Internet Plan with them.
Right now, my ethernet and wifi are both measuring exactly the same speed.
It's only when you change venue's to another location and are connecting via different routers / ISP's that you need to re test.Last edited: Feb 9, 2016Netherscourge and Mr. Spock like this. -
I have the same PC and then ditched it after I go the Clevo. I barely used that PC and mainly played on an older clevo I had. Its hard to say the % performance gain as it is a very old CPU.
What I noticed with the PC (I had a GTX 970) is that even with a 970, the games would stutter (COD) on max setting. Actually even a medium setting on COD. My gless it that the CPU/chipset was the bottleneck.
I only bought this laptop to replace my old Clevo and I was going to keep my PC, but when I compared my PC to this Clevo and realised that I could just HDMI to my TV, I decided to ditch the PC.
Its probably double the CPU power and quite a large increase in GPU power.Netherscourge likes this. -

Subtracting 100 to 150 mv is great because it cuts down temps a lot... in my case, 100% CPU utilization rendering/encoding takes my CPU (6700k) to 87C and beyond.... with -120mv it hovers in the 74-77C area. I need to use the XTU app to have some piece of mind that the CPU will not overheat... I am not always at my computer to monitor the temps... and sometimes rendering takes a lot of time.
The best way to revert the XTU settings/changes, at least for my P751 worked, is to uninstall XTU and take out the CMOS battery for 1 minute... everything will reset to default
Any idea what other software should I use to be able to undervolt my 6700k?
