I've been thinking, is it possible that my high temperature was caused by a defective cooler?
Since I've done repaste, and core temperature is consistent with 'CPU Package' temperature, apparently the internal thermal compound is not the problem, but rather the cooling capacity is not enough. Based on AIDA64 readings, the maximum heat my cooler can handle is around 75-76W, beyond that the temperature would be high enough (95C+) and cause throttling.
The 6700K CPU's TDP is 91W, so the cooler should be able to dissipate 91W of heat, right? So, maybe my cooler is defective, like one of the heatpipes leaked or something? -

Aida readings are not that accurate.

Ah, sager, why everytime I submit tech support form on your website, I got ignored? And here you are on the forum.

I don't work on the desk, I consult and aid people when they have issues with support. I also try to help direct on the forum. On that topic if you can send me the details on your issue and when you asked for help I can chase.

@Meaker@Sager with a custom profile on the corsair 4x8 3000mhz instead of XMP 1 as it does not post (cant even get to windows) what would be a semi-safe voltage to apply over 1.2 volts?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's not a ram voltage issue. Try booting it with a single stick first in slot 1. Once it is booting try powering it off and putting the other sticks in.

Ok so likely it is just 1 or 2 poor sticks as the two under the keyboard boot fine. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's more likely the IMC with the connector topography struggling with addressing 4 sticks at once. You could check by swapping sticks and making sure you boot from xmp1 before moving to custom to help with the sub timings not listed.

Any news about that 780w power supply that was in the works? Supposedly had a switch on it and a cooling fan? Would help out a lot going on trips so I could pack more in my bag. Not a big deal but was curious.

I could use a little help with my new OCZ NMV RD400 drive. I made a system image of my Sandisk X400. Took it out and installed the image on the RD400 and it would not boot. I then put back in the Sandisk X400 and put the RD400 in the other M.2 slot. I was then able to get the drive to work and see the identical system on the RD400. I know it is a different technology so what's the secret on getting the system image to work on the NVME drive?
-
Is it an m.2 slot that is equipped to do pcie 4x? If I recall there is m.2 sata and m.2 pcie.

@clevo-extreme ...I am sorry but you are incorrect. The point is, regardless of a couple of screw holes that may not be threaded because they serve no purpose, the DM2 and DM3 are exactly the same barebones laptop. The ONLY distinction is, the Clevo SKU states that the DM2 supports 1x GTX 1080, or 1x or 2x GTX 1070 and the Clevo SKU states that the DM3 supports either 1x or 2x GTX 1080 as I carefully detailed in my quoted post above.
You can actually install either 1x or 2x GTX 1070, or 1x or 2x GTX 1080 in either the DM2 or DM3 SKU. This quote comes directly from Clevo "I just spoke with our senior engineer and he informed me that all components are the same, the only difference is the graphics cards between the models. It is OK to put the 2nd GTX 1080 in the DM2 as long as the proper GPU and CPU heat sink assemblies are installed with it."

No no I didn't mean all the systems do that I just got burnt on a Clevo P775 buy in September and I got really lucky as they accepted the refund. The machine I got would ran on max fans 90% of the time and reached 100+ degrees on several occasions just while playing some games and not even the newest or the most demanding ones. All stock clocks of course.
It's great to hear that it really can be dealt with though as I just want to buy a machine that will last and the p870DM3 looks right for the job

Just make sure you don't buy it without the Prema BIOS -
I've posted this question in the overclockers lounge but I got no responses, so I'll try my luck here. I was running BIOS 1.05.01 and EC 1.05.03 for the past couple of months and I was able to undervolt the CPU to -210mv running at 4.2. I threw everything at this undervolt and it was rock solid, which was great for using in the office around lots of people and having nice and quiet fans. I noticed the problem that the CPU would throttle to stock when benching, but had no other problems. I recently updated the BIOS to 1.05.03 and EC to 1.05.06 and since then my undervolt is no longer stable. I am currently testing and it is running stable at -160mv which still fine. However I have noticed that while benching the CPU now throttles much lower than stock, all the way down to 1.1 at times. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Does some one have the older BIOS and EC versions so I can rollback? Could the undervolt be causing this, even though it was an issue with the older BIOS and EC? Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk -
Yes this issue was identified a while back, I believe HID owners were able to resource the old EC firmware via a flash update that they were supplying. I would recommend reaching out to their support for that request.

Well could not get the nvme drive to accept my system image. I tried installing the drivers before installing the system image but it would not take the drivers was getting an error. Guess for now I will just use it for my games and not the system till I figure it out. Did not really want to reinstall a fresh windows copy as I have about 8 hours of work programs/documents to put back on the system.
-
I have contacted HID and they said they don't have any of the older BIOS or EC versions. The oldest they had, was BIOS 1.05.02 and EC 1.05.04. So unless someone has a copy here on the forum, I'll just have to wait until the prema BIOS comes out.

The Prema BIOS fixes all throttling issues. Just hang in there, you'll get it as soon as it's reached the final stage, it's in RC stage now and very stable IMOPrimeTimeAction and afloyd like this. -

it also has a new option not previously seen on the older P870DM Prema BIOS which is BCLK overclocking. You know when you have an x44 multiplier for example but the clock speed that you see is 4.398 Ghz? Pretty annoying right? If you bump the BCLK a bit, then you would get a stable 4.4 GHz that never drops

Sweet! That's always bugged me, another reason to always go with a prema partner. When I bought the older P870DM from HID I didn't even release the BIOS it had was special. It was only afterwards when I joined this forum that I realised I had lucked out.

True, I feel really sorry for anyone who purchases a Clevo laptop from a non-Prema partner, they are no better than BGA jokebooks in terms of their limitations and throttling issues.

@Trashmonk BTW man, when you ordered your system, did you choose the factory delidding option from HIDevolution and/or the silicon lottery CPU?
-
I did choose the delid option, however only verbally over the phone and they forgot to do it for me. In the end I did it myself. It was actually really easy with a delid tool. I know I voided my warranty, but the temperatures are so much better, I don't really care. Moral of the story always triple check your orders even with HID! I got really lucky with CPU, it overclocks well when I need max performance and runs really well undervolted for when I'm in the office, -210mhz at 4.2!

I would call them and say, look guys, I ordered my CPU with the factory delidding option but you forgot it, so I did it myself using a professional tool. I kindly ask you to not void my CPU warranty as it wasn't my fault that y'all forgot to do it and I didn't wanna be without my system to send it back for you to do this so I did it myself and professionally without damaging anything. So please honor my CPU warranty if in the future I ever needed it. Although CPU failures are very rare and you probably won't need it.Trashmonk likes this. -
That was my plan if something ever went wrong, but so far everything is going great, except for the crippled BIOS and EC, but they will be fixed soon enough.

just in case I need to replace the thermal pads, I saw your pad guide and would like to ask, what are the exact measurements for those pads? I was thinking of going with this brand of thermal pad, how many mm x mm do I need? thank you!

I used two sets of 10x10cm pads in mine and used roughly half of the 0.5mm ones and a bit less of 1mm. There is no real benefit getting the really fancy pads.

I just got through security at the airport and even though Precheck means I should be able to leave my laptop in my bag, the P870DM3 is too hardcore to see through using the X-Rays so they pulled me aside for a full bag inspection. Lol

Alphacool Ice Thermal Pad - 14W/mK 100x100x1mm
Like Meaker said though there was not much benefit from the pads that I could see. Temps were around the same for me with cheaper 6 w/mk pads.Valatek likes this. -

For me personally I had a good fit even with the stock pads on the single GPU heatsync. I original tried with 6 w/mk artic thermal pads from stock and saw no difference. Then with the alphacool 14 w/mk and saw no difference. Only difference was when I moved to the vapor chamber and continued using the alphacool. I don't have a comparison with the stock pads on the vapor chamber though as I used the alphacool right off the bat.

Do you or anybody else know if there is any way to set a "proper" custom fan curve. Like setting various fan speeds (%age) against temps for GPU and CPU fans.
Will it be possible after Prema bios?
