I will give it a go tomorrow if the day is sunny again. The white wasn't pure white at 40% but I don't mind that after coming from a Glossy screen Acer netbook. With that machine even at 100% brightness it was just able to be usable on a sunny day. I am more worried about battery life then perfect whites.

I can't take a screenshot but here are some camera phone pictures of the w110er and various laptops I got it next to or ontop of before the Fry's guys came by and informed me their store policy does not allow photography under any circumstances.

Good stuff. +rep

Thanks a bunch. I sent you a PM

can anyone post their w110er next to an ipad? preferably an ipad horizontally oriented
-
I don't have a W110ER yet but if you enter the dimensions into sizeasy you can get a quick visualization.
-
And notice this:

5C difference. Not only that, it peaked at 91C but 80% of the time was at 88C compared with not propped up, it was pretty consistent 93-94C. -
Arrrgh, I wish we could see Clevo/Sager laptops in a store over here. You can only order them from online stores. Great size comparison shot's there, +rep.
-
LOL. That M14x looks so monstrously huge now... with similar performance mind you.
-
lol i love the pictures, coming from a m14x that i just recently sold i really love the downgrade in size while still keeping everything i need for gaming in college.

I actually canceled my order today for the W110ER. I want portability, but I feel the 11.6" may be too small for gaming, the current temperatures bother me for the long term as does lack of fan control, and I'm not happy with what I've been hearing about the screen quality. I may change my mind and give this a 30 day test period if I see some good things come out of the bios mod.
-
The video card alone is %20 faster on the m14x due to the gddr5 vs the ddr3 video ram.
Further, due to the bigger foot print on the m14x r2 you have more cooling surface area and larger fans. which in turn spell out better cooling, and as a result better cooling means this will run into turbo speeds more then the w110er, because when cpu gets above a certain temp Turbo no longer works.
Look on this thread, guys here are over 90c already!!
M14X r2 all the way. -
I hear you, m14x r2 ?
what do you plan on?
let me know, let me know?????!?!?!?!?!? -
You can't normally find them in stores here either. I carried mine in with the stated reason of wanting to try laptop bags on the actual machine. Which I actually did before I went over to take the photos. I didn't realize they had the no pictures policy or I'd have gone straight to the m14x and y480p.
I'll give Microcenter a go on Tuesday when I go by there on my way to the in-laws. -
Never got the M14x, nearly the same size as my Clevo P150HMA, but slower? Just as expensive out here as well. They do look nice though, plus are well built, and I suppose the added size gives added cooling, but I'd much rather the Clevo P150HMA is you're after a portable desktop replacement.
Now when Alienware finally put a GPU worthy of the M14x's size, then we'll have an interesting laptop... -

No, I plan on waiting for something in the 13" range. I'm sure there will be something similar spec wise to the W110ER in the next 3 to 6 months. The M14x is pretty much the size of most 15" notebooks... I'm not interested. -
Ya, i hear you.
Did you get my m14x quote? i emailed it to you, i dont know if you can touch the $350 discount already given from dell. -
It'll happen soon, if they can fit these spec's into a 11", it's bound to come out for a 13" soon.
-
I've heard horrible, horrible things about the M14x's heat and noise issues. Those factors along with it being as bulky as a 15" disqualifies it as a portable for me.
Check out this video at around 7:15-7:20
[HD] Alienware M14X - Nebula Red with Soft Touch Finish - 3Dmark Vantage (Stock).wmv - YouTube -
At higher resolution it's 15-20% faster, but also 50% more cost, and it's similar volume as a 15" notebook. So I guess if you will consider the M14x R2, perhaps consider an NP9150 with 6970m instead of an NP6110.

8GB DDR3 1600
1GB GT 650m GDDR5
750GB HDD

Volume = 3291.2 cm^3
Weight = 6.45 lbs
NP9150 1920x1080
i7-3610QM
8GB DDR3 1600
2GB 7970m GDDR5
500GB HDD
DVDRW
~ $1500
Volume = 3422.6 cm^3
Weight = 6.83 lbs
131.4 cm^3 difference ~ 4% volume / 0.38 lbs difference ~ 6% weight
3dmark11 7970m = 5600 / 555m = 2200 ~ 250%
Cost ~ Even
and for NP6110 volume = 1811 cm^3 / 3.97 lbs.
1611 cm^3 difference ~ 50% volume / ~ 40% weight
3dmark11 650m DDR3 = 2260 / 650m GDDR5 = 2200 ~ Even
Cost NP6110 ~ $1000 / M14x R2 ~ $1500
Cost difference ~ 50%
Sorry, just in an analytical mood -
The only things wrong with the m14x is the size and it only has a 650m.
Granted its a better version but given it's size you might as well step up to something slightly bigger but much more powerful.
The 14x looks gigantic when compared to this Clevo. -
Agreed, very large machine, with average spec's. Not sure why people are buying them, but each to their own. You do get excellent support from Dell though, along with decent build quality (and lot's of flashy lights).
-
I had far too many downloads for one of the betas...
Some of these things can kill peoples Notebooks if not tested properly and I don't want that to happen!!!
So please don't do that shi!
We will have a formal puplic release once all features are confirmed working.
THX  -
Maybe these people are addicted to adrenaline?
-
That's mandatory!
Is any of the testers available right now? I would like to do a small test regarding memory timings, HD4000 OC etc...
Also people with 3612QM and interested in testing please please PM
-
So this BIOS will be on all your systems?
Excellent
Hurry up and build me my laptop already
@ Prema
Mythologic sent you your laptop? -
Not yet, still waiting for the 3612QM to roll in. But my order is with them.
-
Mine is too but it looks like I made the right choice to go with the 3610QM, unfortunately the 3612QM seems like it doesn't run any cooler but might only have a little bit better battery life. That is unless you do your magic !
-
well from first hand experience, i never notice a noise problem, the speakers are amazing on the m14x, and from heat yes, i did have some times where there were throtling issues with my i5 dual core, but a quick dust off with a can of air and temps go back down to normal...
but still i sold it so that i could raise enough funds to buy this laptop. -
Hello, I've lurked around in these forums for a bit, but only registered today.
I wanted to thrown in my two cents on the discussion that has been happening. I ordered my w110er from rjtech on Monday and got it on Thursday. Mine has the i7 3610qm cpu. I've been playing around with the Dolphin emulator to try and play some games on this laptop (all legal I buy the games and rip them myself and I do own a Wii, this is not a piracy question). It works pretty well, but I have noticed what others have where the turbo limit is turned off when the gpu is running. So if I run the emulator with the 650m i can only get 2.3 ghz, which is only slightly too slow for some games. If I run it with the hd 4000 I can get 3.1 ghz, but the video card becomes the bottleneck and I still can't really get full speed.
I noticed in htwingnut's thread that some people's 3610s are not turning off turbo when the gpu is active, but mine does. Is this something that we can fix in the event of something like the dolphin emulator, which wants high clock speed? I saw some discussion about removing this limit on the 3612, but I am seeing the same behavior on my 3610.
Sorry if this seems like a noob question. I am not looking for a magic fix for my emulator performance, but from what I can tell this computer would run things perfectly if I could get some turbo with the gpu active. This situation for gaming is a bit unusual because it requires more cpu speed than gpu. Temps are good in either mode, with 74 degrees running the emulator with the gpu according to throttlestop.
Thanks, and if I can provide any other info for this discussion I will be more than happy to.
Here are a couple screenshots that show what I am talking about. It says 100% speed, but that does not last all the time. Also at low resolution I can get full speed almost all the time with the gpu off (3100mhz).

Welcome!
What is your BIOS revision?
Press F2 while booting & let us know what it says for BIOS and EC.
All our mods are based on clean Clevo 1.00.03 EC & BIOS. -
I realize these tests are very time-consuming, and I really appreciate all the results you guys are posting, but would it be possible to do some battery rundown tests with things disabled in the bios like Hyperthreading, turbo, and/or running 2 cores? That would be awesome
-
Let Prema do the BIOS first
These options are not in the standard bios if I get it right. -
Yeah, I'm quite sure I'm going with the W110ER/XMG A102
Waiting a little, but it's going to be good hehe -
me too
Ger keyboard is delayed at mysn.
But I guess I'm going to order end of next week or a little bit later.
I find the may offer pretty good. -
If I were you, I would surely try it out. Also keep in mind these benchmarks take the GPU to the extremes to get a full view of the heat management. Highly doubt it'll happen when playing Diablo 3.
This machine comes with HDMI which easily gives you the opportunity to connect the machine to a larger screen
+ Waiting for the BIOS mod too
if it turns out to be awesome, I'll order for sure
-
My bios version is 1.00.01 and ec version is 1.00.02. I assume mine is clean since mine is sold as a clevo from rjtech. I have no branding on mine at all.

I'm Just going to wait until the Gigabyte U2442N is released then I'll see how reviews are, (it's 14", 900p matte, GT 640M, IvB, backlit keyboard and super slim around $1000) if it's as good as I expect it to be then I'll just get that, if not then I'll re-order the W110ER and give it a try. -
But why?
The W110ER is smaller, slightly fatter and stronger.
Gigabyte U2442N seemed like something awesome when I first saw it but after the knowledge of the W110ER.. it's not worth it.
!!! Especially when you think about that the Gigabyte will come with the GeForce GT 640M

I already summed it up, the screen size, 11.6 I feel is too small for me to play comfortably for the amount of time I play, I want a bigger screen, I also work on electronic music, and the larger sized screen will be easier on my eyes for that..
The 640M is just a down clocked 650M, can probably OC a bit to make back some performance. -
I must imagine that a person like you would own a external screen.. There's a external VGA port and HDMI output in the W110ER.
-
I agree. Although I would be willing to bet that it has better battery life, and the backlit keyboard is very nice. All in all I don't think there will be a more tempting gaming ultraportable for me until intel's 2013 "tock".
As for the backlit keyboard, I did some research and purchased a set of glowing key toppers. I've seen a bunch of videos and they are not nearly as tacky as they sound. Mine should arrive by Wednesday at the latest so I can do pics if you guys want.
With regards to temperatures, a company now manufactures liquid cooling units for gaming laptops. Currently the smallest laptop they fit in is the g53sx, but I would imagine that in a year or two, liquid cooling for smaller (and thicker, like this one) laptops may not be out of reach for the ambitious.
If the bios mod is successful, one could theroretically drastically reduce power consumption if one disabled HT, boost and ran 2 cores in power saver for watching a movie or just browsing/word processing. Once I get mine I shall anxiously await news regarding a release of the modded bios, and help in any way I can. -

I have an external screen, it's hooked up to my desktop, I'm not buying a small laptop to hook it up to my monitor. I'm buying it to use it as is. -
That Gigabyte looks nice. If coupled with GDDR5 it might push it near 650m with DDR3.
-
Megacharge Custom User Title
From what I know about it, it's exactly the same shaders as the 650M just 200mhz less clock speed, pretty sure I could get close to that even if it was DDR3 with a bit of OC, but I'm sure they will go with DDR5 with the 900p res, if not I might just get a W110ER.
I just want to wait it out a bit, and see what comes of the U2442N. -
Small note to all testers:
Something requires my immediate attention and I will mostly not be able to continue with the BIOS until Thursday.
-
+1 Rep to Prema

I honestly doubt they will put DDR5 in the Gigabyte. It is very thin for having a full quad core i7 and a Kepler GPU. As seen with the Acer TimelineX Ultra, it is very hard to cool and absolutely murders battery life. DDR5 kicks out significantly more heat than DDR3 so taking into account how much smaller the U2442N is than say a m14x then much will have to be sacrificed in the way of cooling, much more so than on the W110ER.
Also, DDR5 doesn't make sense for the 640m. Sure it's compatable but for what is supposed to be a midrange consumer card, the added cost would not make financial sense. Look at the 540m, no laptops were ever made with DDR5 and a 540m, even if it was compatable. Even DDR5 on a 550m was rare.
I would LOVE to see Gigabyte pull that off (and to be proven wrong)! I look forward to seeing what they do with it and it's future revisions but as its their first go-round with such a laptop i won't get my hopes up. -
I just pulled the trigger on my W110ER from MALIBAL. Posted about it here:
