No wonder everything gets so warm![]()

Well, those are the heatsinks I added on top of the existing ones.
Also another thing to note is that you need to move significant air across that CPU to make a difference in temperature. I'm glad I got the fan I did even though it's noisy, it does keep it cool.
Ideally I'd like a blower fan only wide enough to mount to blow across the CPU at minimum cfm, but I doubt you'll be able to find a 20mm wide x 4mm thick blower fan that can move more than a couple cfm at best. -
fwiw i got one of these (90 watt ac adapters):
Newegg.com - Antec SNP90 Slim Notebook Power Adapter
Seems to work OK. No noticeable issues.. It is slightly thinner than an altoids tin, about same width and about 1inch longer....
Note worthy, I run fedora 17 and have a i7-3612qm and ssd. I have optimus disabled -- not particularlly power hungry. -
sorry if a dup answer: I am using the white tip with this ac adapter:
Antec - SNP90
according to antec it is: 5.5(OD)*2.5(ID)*12.0(L)mm -
How would that work? I have having a hard time to find slimmer fans than 10mmn :/ 7CFM isnt too shabby for such a small fan! $5.99 too

Also found this 4.2 CFM 6mm thick 5v fan
Sounds all around more suited .. but almost half the cfm.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/40mm-6mm-Ne...?pt=US_Computer_Case_Fans&hash=item27c7cfd9f7
This one here is 3mm thick blower only pushes .7cfm though

Edit: I was thinking, could we just replace the stock fan in there for a better one? More CFM? Or is the one currently in there as good as they come? I could defenatly tolarate a few more DB if it meant cooler system overall. -
the mainboard have the power slot for the extra cooler ?
BR -
Did you try Micro-fans ?
EDIT: This one looks better http://cpc.farnell.com/multicomp/gm0504pev1-8-gn/40mm-micro/dp/MF67629 around 5.0+ CFM with 6mm depth -
Ugh, I'm having real trouble with ordering my clevo. Because of USPS having some stupid rule about not sending LiIon batteries, i have to order via UPS, and all the sites want a minimum of 250 USD just in postage. :O
For an 11 inch notebook this seems extortionate.
I'm thinking i might ask them to just send it without the battery, but then I have no idea how to get one sent here without paying another ridiculous sum.. -
Are you ordering within the US ?
-
no, that's the problem. trying to ship to New Zealand.
-
Check to see if Logical Blue One or Affordable Laptops will ship from Australia to NZ perhaps? Both sites offer the Clevo W110ER (LBO as Horize / AL as MetaBox) for a base price of $1149 AU
-
thanks, ill look into that.
EDIT: thanks for the tip Bigs, i have emailed both sites to see what they say. one doesn't seem to offer international shipping, but the other has it quoted at 130 AUD. I'm hoping it will actually be less than that for a small laptop to NZ, so that would be good. but even if that's what i pay, it costs roughly the same same as the US order, but will be here in a quarter of the time with half the risk.
And I don't feel quote so ripped off paying that for delivery... -
I have an idea with the fans..
Why can't we solder the stock fan inputs to a USB port so it always has 5Volts? I wonder what RPM it will run at and if the load temps would be higher? I want to play around with that when I get my W110ER to see how loud the fan is. In my experience a constant fan speed is always good for temps but horrible on battery and noise levels.
Or maybe do a combination of USB power/fan header power..Run them in series or something. Though.. idk how inputting 5 volts in the fan header would affect the fan controller. who knows... -
is it possible somehow use Intel Rapid Start Technology? it should be supported by our chipset
-
I'm soldering to the 5v USB port. I'm not touching the fan connector though.

so i have to ask...
on the one hand you have people saying the temps are not that bad, when compared to other gaming laptops, and that its well within tolerable allowances,
yet on the other hand you have people talking about drilling holes, adding extra heat sinks, and soldering fans into the laptop...
for someone like me, who is just your basic consumer / casual gamer, this all seems a bit intimidating. I really want this laptop, but im starting to get the idea that keeping it running is going to require far more DIY computer skills than i possess.
would something more consumer orientated require less work?
or are you guys just doing this for fun? -
Well you are right, it is well withing limits but people like us know things can be improved and we will always try to improve things.. Think about it, if we thought the laptop sucked we all wouldn't be buying it and playing around with it. As is, the laptop is perfectly fine but we want more power, better cooling, more battery life. It's a learning process as well, gaining experience and just having fun is what we are all about.
-
Hmm getting BSOD code F4 when I leave the PC downloading something while the lid is closed with the power option s disabled when the PC sleeps when you close the lid. The fan runs at 100% while this happens too.

Yes... because we can.

They're just enthusiasts
Enthusiasts like to do things that typical consumers will find unnecessary simply in the interest of improving their machine. It's fun and interesting and they get a kick out of it.
I lean more towards the "typical consumer." I think the computer handles heating fine. The biggest issue is the idle temps that are warm on light loads, but that alone won't damage anything and it scales well with high loads and so it's not worth worrying too much about. -
Enthusiasts are always looking for ways to make things faster. That's why I took a soldering iron to my M11x and bolted a 460GTX to my Vostro.
It's all for fun.
I think it's safe to say a lot of us have engineering minds, and like to push things to maximum potential, with as little trade-off as possible. -
One should check out the desktop or Alienware section of the NBR forum, talking about fun..........
hehe

0.0 I must see this..

Yop !
I have a question,is it safe to remove the black plastic around the GPU die ?
-
does anyone know if a usb3 docking station like this one Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed⢠Dual Video Docking Station | ACP70USZ uses the the dedicated gpu for its hdmi and dvi ports and if so could i use it to setup multiple monitors for gaming on my np6165
-
Anyone else worried about the rubber wearing on the corners/edges of the palm rest, long term?
-
Lol, it's just an eGPU. A bit or hyperbole. Pics of the enclosure here.

Hi guys, I just received my sager np6110 last friday and when I tried to boot it up it says "no bootable media." In the BIOS is shows "SATA 1 port not present" Is this happening to anyone else as well? And any idea how I can fix it? Much appreciated!
-
No. It uses it's its own video hardware for basic 2D desktop and that's about it.
Windows does not come standard with these laptops, you have to select a Windows option when you order. That's what it sounds like, that no OS is present.
Although the BIOS note throws me for a loop. I would shut down your laptop, remove battery, slide off the bottom panel, remove the one silver screw holding the hard drive, slide out the hard drive, and then reseat it, plug everything back in and see if that works. -
Have you opened the bottom cover of your laptop? Is the hard drive there?
-
Thanks for the responses. I should have included more info in my first post. I have it ordered with windows 7 64bit. Ive tried opening the back cover and reseating the hard drive couple of times but this doesnt seem to fix the problem. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. I ordered this laptop with xoticpc and their service is taking quite a long time to respond and i would like to avoid rma if possible as it is a long and painful process...
-
Well HDD may be dead and you may need to RMA anyhow unless you have a spare HDD to test. Then they may be able to cross ship a new HDD if you're willing to do a fresh Windows install yourself.
-
There is always the desire to make things better on this forum. Just because we bought it does not mean that the computer is in it's final config.
Without the help pleading and above all the creative thoughts from users of this forum I doubt that the M11x would have the hinges that don't self destruct. (3rd screen is the charm!
)
And yes it's fun to change the way the computer looks and works that's why we are such suckers for the lights
-
I hadn't noticed this before, but I now see a matte screen option with Xotic PC. I'm wondering if they just added this within the last 24 hours.
-
Mythlogic simply shipped my W11 without a battery via USPS and the batteries (yes plural) seperately via UPS.

thanks for the responses guys.
I figured as much, but after reading the considerable amount of DIY-Talk, i was starting to get the idea that, as someone who doesnt do much tinkering, that i might be getting in over my head.
Good to hear that (although fun, and beneficial) all that isnt really necessary
cant wait till IB i5's are available at my local dealer so i can order myself one of these bad boys
-
not just xotic PC. both Xotic and the AUS site I have been looking at ordering from have had the matte screen become available within the last 24 hours. Must be new supplier stock.
-
Affordable Laptops? If so that'd be the first time they'd offered a matte screen option. Just got told today (I went with LBO) that my matte screen had dead pixels and have to wait about another week till new screens arrived... at least it's better to catch that now than after it shipped... but still...

So far I am happy with the thermals of this laptop using the 35W CPU (i5 2450) as I am idling around 45-55C. Peaks at 80C at sustained max loads. I did get IC Diamond with this laptop. The 650M runs even cooler! Air from the side vent isn't overly hot and neither is any part of the laptop. There aren't as many people giving reports on the 35W dual cores so I hope this helps!
Also the CPU idles between 3-5W. Not sure how this compare to idle consumption on the 3610 though! -
That's pretty low power draw. Can you tell me the power draw for the full system in idle mode? I'm most interested in the power draw when the computer is at idle, screen to low brightness, WIFI on, and battery saving mode. Have they fixed the high power draw at idle? Is it alleviated through using a dual core i5 as opposed to quad core i7? Thanks!
-
I am curious if anyone has run the 3610QM model through Geekbench? What kind of scores is it getting?
-
Does anyone know the manufacturer of this panel? The one that came in my Eurocom Monster is an AUO panel.
-
I just spoke with XoticPC, and the matte option is an AUO panel, the same one available in the Eurocom Monster.
-
Here are my results using the trial version:
CLEVO CO. W110ER - Geekbench Browser -
Your Geekbench spec sheet says you have 666 MHz DDR3 RAM. How is that possible?
-
DDR = Double Data Rate
666*2 = 1333MHz RAM -
Gotcha, although who did you buy it from that gave you 1333 MHz RAM? If you have an ivy quad i thought the Clevo re-sellers gave 1600 MHz...
-
Is that a pretty good score? How does that compare to last years MacBook Pro 15" laptops?
-
Lol I was just about to mention a Mac comparison. Notice that the new 15" MacBook Pro has the same exact specs as a W110ER (save for a higher rez screen and GDDR5, Hackintosh anyone?), weighs more, and costs almost a thousand dollars more for the cheapest config. Honestly, I dont see the appeal.
The non-retina 15" has GDDR5 but only 512 MB vram, half the RAM, and a 5400 rpm HDD, still a thousand more than a comprable config of a W110ER.
I know they cater to completely different audiences, and are not comparable in any way, I just have to LOL at the price-to-performance ratio.
Now that thats out of my system, from a practical standpoint, is 512 MB GDDR5 enough for gaming and graphically intense operations at the resolution of 1440x900 or 1680x1050?
How about 1 GB GDDR5 at the obcene resolution of 2880x1800?
Edit: Also, for the i7-3610qm and a 650m with GDDR5, it uses an 85W power supply! From tests being run here, unless Mountain Lion has some crazy power management, thats asking for problems
Please dont flame me for flaming macs, I think the software is great, but I am interested in knowing what you guys think. -
I popped a 2540m Sandy Bridge into my W110er to test this. They clearly are still running at USB 3.0 Speeds. This is a screen shot from a few minutes ago. HDTune is testing the speed of a USB 3.0 750GB 2.5" External Seagate Hard Drive.
