I look forward to never being able to pay sane prices for GPUs again, even when this current shortage is over.

You won't have to if you stick to 1080p for the rest of all time and eternity. :D

1080p already looks really good, especially on laptop panels since the pixel density is already really high at 1080p on a screen 17 inches in size or smaller.

You'd still need to upgrade after a certain amount of time, but you could skip multiple GPU generations and be fine with only xx60 class cards.

These are the two main reasons I don't plan on ever moving past 1080p. For one, I don't need to drastically increase my GPU compute power requirements because I don't want to pay ridiculous amounts of money on GPUs that meet my needs. Secondly, 1080p looks good enough to me.

It's not even about the resolution, but about a modern feature set. I'd like to experience Metro Exodus Enhanced, CP2077, and Control with ray tracing, which is even possible at high frame rates with DLSS. A GTX 1080 doesn't it cut anymore at 1080p either if the target is 120Hz. My next system is gonna be a desktop and I want to upgrade to 1440p or ultrawide as well. I can't remember the last time I liked an x60 class card. The best price-to-performance over time option is usually x60 Ti or x70 class, since x60 usually has dealbreakers like too little VRAM or memory bandwidth, or just being too cut down/lacking in compute power, to be relevant for more than a couple years after release.

Ok, so Scan sent me a copy of the v1.07.04 BIOS update package for my X170SM-G but... not a single word of documentation on how to flash the BIOS to the laptop.
It's not as simple as most laptops where you just get a Windows flash program and a .bin file.
There's a folder called "ALL" with a load of files.
Seems like you might be able to do it in Windows with the batch files or create a UEFI bootable USB and then do it using the efi files or nsh files or something.
The detailed user manual that came on CD with the machine just says "load the updated BIOS" as it's sole instruction O_0
Anyone here actually updated the BIOS on this machine and can give / point me at some proper instructions, please?

    The directory contents look like:

I ask this because I'm getting on aida64 cpu stress test + time spy extreme gpu test 2 looping, around 73 74 C for gpu, and 93 94C for the cpu, the former either stock or overclocked doesn't change much, the latter is stock but undervolted (-0.93mv) , is this normal for the cpu especially? seems kinda high for LM

1080p 120Hz (Not a solid 120FPS but well over 60) with the right detail tuning can certainly be achieved on the 1080.

It’s moreso the lack of smoothness in the animations and camera movement, and the input lag, which G-Sync doesn’t solve.

So long as I am between 90 and 120FPS I certainly don't feel too bad, in unoptimized games like cyberpunk at 1440p I can still play at 55fps.

What settings at 1440p? When I tried 1440p via DSR I had to lock to 30 for consistency. Even at the lowest settings, it was nowhere near 60 at 1440p, and the game looked terrible.

It was an AUO B173HAN05.1 panel and the laptop was X170SM-G with an RTX 2080 Super. Tremendous shame though that the motherboard went out on it on the same day that it arrived.

    ugh.. what?

3080 mobile uses samsung 8nm and only barely better than a 2080super thats on 12nm?

is power the limiting factor here? wasn't the shrink a pretty massive one?

Nvidia and the OEM thought cripple the TGP from 200W to 150w+15w dynamic boost was a great ida. Doesn’t matter if the model was engineered for 200W graphics. See… 3080 mobile = castrated.

Is it possible to run the X170SM-G with Linux? I am a Linux newbie and was wondering if all the drivers for the X170SM-G are available for Linux?

    Cheers!

I am still getting over 90C CPU with liquid metal on both cpu and gpu with full combined load (aida64 cpu+cache and timespy gpu test), with honestly identical results to thermal paste(gpu temps are stupid low as usual ofc) , am I doing something wrong?
