I believe XMG has the X170 on preorder as well.
As for external battery chargers, I'm pretty sure they're still a thing. I saw some a while ago for the P775TM and P750TM batteries.

I think they never thought it was necessary and cheaper that way. Imo it is a mistake as these days gaming flagships from Alienware, Asus and MSI all have some kind of mux solution for longer battery life, as do all modern 17" DTR's and workstations. I think that by now all of them have a battery life of 5 hours or more.
A properly done mux switch should not cost any performance and the unit could be used in such a way that it would even work without the MXM GPU. This is something that I like(d) about the GT72 and the HP Zbook G5 to name two examples that I am familiar with.
It would also make the X170 chassis more attractive as a workstation / DTR but then Clevo probably does not care about that and neither do most gamers from what I gather on this forum. -
That's a shame they don't have it. Hoping that changes in the near future as it's a nice quality of life feature to have on any laptop.
After seeing Alienwares offerings today I think anyone that doesn't know about this machine is crazy to not go with this one. Much better customization. And no proprietary RAM for XMP nonsense. Can get a near fully kitted out model for less than the starting Area 51m R2 even with a 3 year warranty.

i agree alienware is a big disappointment the only thing is the clevo doesnt have 300hz only 240hz but other that its superior in everyway and cheaper in price with the same CPU and GPU spec i think im gonna go with the clevo at the end of june
they even removed the 2 ram slots on the alienware and have the nerve to rack up the price like that -

Next step will be soldered on Wifi as it’s thinner siblings.
Maybe it’s their configurator

Hello All,
I wonder if it's possible to buy a Clevo X170SM-G with a Nvidia Quadro GPU (for example the RTX Quadro 4000 or similar).
This notebook is quite amazing and it could be the best for my needs.
Best regards,

Very intrested to see the coming reviews for this.
Top spec is tempting, but the i9/RTX2080 throttled bad in the 51M.
If the x170 truly have a good cooling system it may work, otherwise the i5/i7 with RTX2070S may be the best config...
The 240Hz screen with G-sync is great thou.

Of the Clevo suppliers in EU, I know of Clevo-Center, Obsidian and XMG. They all seem to have good rep and cater to enthusiasts. Which one would you say to go for? I know Clevo-Center is Prema partner, but I know Obsidian have nice software etc.
Any thoughts? -

Indeed it is. When I use them on battery power I find that I usually will want to use them longer than I can comfortably achieve on these units without a mux switch.
-
It's not that easy just to add a MUX switch, the actual board and VRM layout will need to be redone. Since there are no phases for the integrated graphics, and adding those phases would mean vcore power plane needs to be rerouted around the iGPU power plane, due to position of the pins on the CPU. Thus would need a change in the VRM layout due to added impedance to the vcore.

I've bought my p775TM from laptopparts4less. If price is your main concern you should order from them. They are the cheapest Clevo and Tongfang resellers in the EU. I also found their service good, but didn't have much problems anyway, so your mileage may vary. Frits, the one in charge, always answers promptly to any questions. They don't have Prema bios nor Obsidian tools. I've bought Obsidian fan control later on and it works perfectly. -
does origin PC use the 200W 2080 super in the new Eon17x ?
-
Price is not the main point for me, Prema partner would be nice thou.
-
I didn’t see anything on their website mentioning this. I can imagine they are if the competition is. Would be best to reach out to OriginPC to see if one of their sales reps know such a thing. I’m waiting to hear back from Donald at HIDevolution. I didn’t see them offering it yet, but they’re pretty well known on the forums. OriginPC I didn’t see anyone mentioning owning their machines here.

Yeah they go after a different clientele.
-
Not sure if this is mentioned. Mulicom.no promote GeForce RTX 2070 Super as 125w card on main page. But specs say 115w.
-
Perhaps they use a custom VBIOS? Or maybe they're just wrong.
-
Yes a motherboard supporting a MUX switch would have to be built from the ground up but I am sure Clevo would be capable of doing it. They just don't see the need I guess.
Speaking of seeing the need weren't we supposed to generally see more GPU options with at least one version of the RTX-2060? So far I can only see this in the Origin configurator.Last edited: Jun 11, 2020 -
It would help with the battery life, but I see these DTRs as portable desktops with an UPS

Do you know if it's possible to mount the Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 or 5000 on the X170SM-G? Why only gaming graphic cards? This laptop is what I am looking for since a lot of time....
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
No one can know yet.
-
And I'd say you are not the only one! But then why do these devices get smaller and more lightweight all the time? And why do they even bother with such a big battery, they can easily perform their UPS duties with half the capacity

Keep an eye on Eurocom, if there is a workstation / DTR version they'll usually have it.
-
I’m still waiting for Origin to reply back to my question if their eon17x has the 200w 2080 super GPU or not
-
Confirmed. It is 200W.Terreos, raz8020, Frr and 1 other person like this.

If anything, all laptops need higher capacity batteries. It'd be nice if the TSA would allow laptops to have batteries with capacities over 100 Wh. I remember when I was in middle school that the old 17" macbook pros had 108 Wh batteries.
Now I'm working towards a master's degree in software engineering, and not much has changed in regards to battery capacity. With the extra empty space inside laptops today, seeing a battery capacity increase would be nice. That's the one thing that has REALLY been lagging behind compared to progress in other hardware.
Sometimes the best solution is brute force

Or two 99Wh batteries with the choice between power saver (use them in sequence) or high performance (draw almost 200Wh). -
Interesting point. I remember back in the day that you could swap out the optical drives of certain laptops for a second battery. I wonder why that disappeared. It was a pretty sweet concept.
A DTR that can perform almost as well on battery power as when plugged into mains would pique the interest of so many people on these forums. It'd definitely sell extremely well amongst us. -
DaMafiaGamer Switching laptops forever!
The Microsoft Surface Book had two batteries, one for the cpu and one for the gpu literally. On battery power you could get almost full power from both the CPU and GPU, that was by far the best battery design I’ve ever seen where the full potential of the laptop could be utilised without any compromise, of course is was fully bga though. What @BrightSmith is saying is theoretically possible although it would add A LOT of weight to the device, not to mention make it thicker...jc_denton likes this. -
Good thing we DTR people don't care about weight. A second 100 Wh battery would add about 2 pounds to the laptop and make it easier for us to retain our status as muscular nerds with less reps and less workout time
.
Imagine if such a laptop was advertised with a picture of a bodybuilder flexing while holding the laptop. That would definitely become a hilarious meme.
Just my personal opinion, but I feel that a lot of laptops have become too light. They feel so flimsy nowadays.raz8020, DaMafiaGamer and etern4l like this. -

Is OriginPC a Prema Partner? Or only HIDEvolution and Xotic PC? -
Is there a place in Canada to buy this from?
-
i dont think the x170 has a prema modded bios yet its still a very new computer hopefully the stock bios is improved
-
Having the actual hardware in hand, in order to do the modding certainly helps.
-
This looks like a great laptop but I wish they had 3950x version. I know they have one but that's trash compared to x170 both in ram capacity, screen res, even build quality and design.
When will this laptop be released? Also this only comes with 2080S? I wonder if they will provide 3080 when it's released.
The price is not cheap also, one build came about to almost 6k usd.
