Not sure if these have been posted before but I found two youtube videos from somebody who calls himself Clevo Tech that shows a bit more of the X170 chassis:
Music and the camera work is let's say rather special:
I like that the battery can be swapped without opening the chassis and hopefully all that bling can be easily deactivated. That contraption that holds the two power supplies is also quite nice.

This is a great serious alternative from A51M R2, the design is a bit different from Clevos esp that extra back, like ASUS who started it first then everyone jumped. And looks like they went full bore RGB with this
I wish they made the Heatsink non unified and kept the 870 Chassis for maximum efficiency in HS design and I/O (2.5" bays are gone). Dual Sub woofer system looks insane, definitely going to challenge MSI. But was curious on a few things on this machine's specs.
- Any Metal exoskeleton in this chassis ? from the looks in the video posted above, looks like there is indeed some metal.
- Does the machine use ESS Sabre DACs in these ? A quick search shows old machines had this setup -> ES9018 (one of the famous ESS chip) + LM49720 (Allowing up-to 600Ohm impedance drive capability) + OPA1622 (Burr brown), which is a superb setup (Alienware doesn't have this, MSI does have ESS + superb Dynaudio speakers). But this one just has that Creative SX Fi stickers (Uber hyped meh DSP ? )
- Main question, pretty sure this will get Prema love but will the Z490 chipset on this X170SM platform has PCIe Gen 4.0 re-drivers and switches ? I doubt Alienware A51M R2 has that considering their trash desktop machines and their HS gate with R1-R2 SUPER GPU block and tons of blocks on basic stuff like XMP on a high end machine. The Z490 desktop has the direct CPU Gen 4.0 lane support for RKL (24 lanes) will be like B550 not the X570, for X570 type I/O, Z590 is needed.Darkhan likes this. -

As far as i know Z490 is PCIe 4.0 Ready, it means in theory it could support gen4 via a BIOS update. But intel 10th gen support up to gen3;
But Intel Rocket Lake S (11th gen) will support gen4 using same LGA1200/ Z490 chipset. -
Oh god, I want...

Micro led on this will not be available until next year?
Also guys is it better to buy this from Hidevolution or just clevo? Does clevo ship to Asia? I checked Origin PC for example but they dont have a 128GB config strangely.
In any case, I wouldn't buy it now until micro led, but still.
Apart from design, I wonder if they improved build quality say compared to Apex 15? All plastic is not premium especially when you pay $5-6k.Darkhan likes this. -

Some benchmarks from Clevo Tech running an i7-10700k (aka 9900k lol)

You mean a lapped 9900K
Looks interesting, I wonder what temps it gets R20 at 5Ghz all core.

XMG Apex 15 with Ryzen CPU almost doubled up the performance of x170:
That's why I don't undersand why Clevo is not going all out with that CPU? I am sure the same CPU could take more power in x170 chassis without any issues and Clevo would hands down the fastest laptop on the planet no? Especially with full power. -
AMD processors isn’t allowed paired with the high end Nvidia graphics in notebooks. Second... AMD chips is still not up where Intel is for gaming. Third... With AMD chips we would see weaker cooling due 7nm and more efficient chips. This could mean Clevo would throw out slimmer X170 chassis with less powerful cooling. Already out with slim chassis we will only se one way down the road even if AMD offered higher TDP chips later.Last edited: Jun 14, 2020Ashtrix, DaMafiaGamer, lestat2k7 and 4 others like this.

Good Jimmie Christmas. Looks at that cooling. Go figure a company like Clevo made a cooling solution that looks like it belongs in a thick machine like this.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but that is an MXM gpu is it not?
And with out any logos this machine honestly looks as nice as the Area 51m in my book. Once @Darkhan gets his in and shows off the performance I think I’m in too for this beast.DaMafiaGamer, Papusan, raz8020 and 2 others like this. -

Yeah, @Prema already confirmed compatibility with P870xx. @jc_denton

That’s very encouraging. Atleast if something breaks you could just swap in a new part. I won’t get my hopes up for an upgrade to the next generation, but that is always possible.
All m.2 storage too it seems. Not that this is bad thing as it means I don’t have to buy and 2.5” ssd for this thing.
I’m not seeing the four memory slots though. I’m guessing two are on the other side of the motherboard. That will be a bit of a bummer. -
It's been like that for ages, you only need to remove 1 screw and pop the keyboard to access the other slots.Papusan likes this.

I was kinda thinking to hold out to 3080, since 2080S will likely be premium priced
But who knows, we can only wait and see for now.

Ah ok. I never had one of the big desktop replacement machines from Clevo before. So I wasn’t aware that was standard. So never mind I’m ok with this.

No idea, I haven't seen the pricing for 2080S MXM yet. I could try reach out and ask around, but regular 2080 is ~940$ at the cheapest on ebay.

It's quite easy to access the components under the keyboard, unlike on some other brands where you have to completely disassemble the laptop in order to flip the motherboard and replace the other two sticks

Finally some common sense and good design! I must’ve hit by a car this morning, because this sounds too good to be true.
First time for everything?
Honestly what I see so far is bloody impressive. I’m just holding out for fellow member to post there experiences and HIDevolution to put them up for grabs. Figure they’re definitely Prema friendly so might as well go with the most reliable reseller I can.

Enjoy! Even your mama with no/less tech skills can remove the KB within a few minutes.

If you met my mother you’d know that is not true!
But dang that’s how it should be done. No wonder people talk such smack on other machines when this is the first time I’ve seen this in a long time.DaMafiaGamer, raz8020, electrosoft and 2 others like this. -
Yeah man! Big Daddy Clevo machines are sweet! The X170SM-G is on my shortlist.Ashtrix, DaMafiaGamer, raz8020 and 4 others like this.

I recall you had a smack down video with a Clevo, Area 51m, and the Msi Titan. Might have to rewatch that since I don’t remember the final verdict.
Hopefully HIDevolution sends out review units.
This has you’re name on it with a nice in-depth review that only you can handle.

I definitely want this as a stand-alone review and not a Smackdown!
I would prefer I didn’t know about this laptop till Nvidia 3k series is available with it.
Otherwise, once the honeymoon phase of the glorious chassis wears off, I’m left with FPS performance I’m already aware of and thermals that need some serious taming.jc_denton, DreDre, Terreos and 1 other person like this. -
Now available for configuration at laptoppartsforless, supposed to be available week 28:
Clevo X170SM-G - 17.3 "FHD IPS 144Hz / 240Hz - nVidia RTX 2070/2080 - Intel Core 10th gen. Desktop cpu - TBT 3 - (ETA week 28)

Perhaps if you wish apon a Star your wish may come true.
That’s a fair point. But, even if the 3000 series gets announced soon it will be a few months before they hit laptops. Longer still depending when they’re officially announced. So I’d be surprised if it wasn’t before Christmas.
Well this is true. It doesn’t matter how pretty something is if it can’t do the job right? That’s why the Area 51m is such a let down. And from what I can see the X170 is gonna have the best cooling available for a laptop like this. Hopefully that’s enough with some delidded CPU’s from HIDevolution and we should have a winner finally.
-
i dont think nvidia 3000 series for laptops will release till around june or july next year could be delayed further if they delay the desktop version
-
Clevo back log is high, I don't think we will see any x170 till late July at best?

You have those 8TB M.2 drives coming too

Can you sponsor my next laptop so I can afford such a thing?
Hopefully in the next year or two 2TB and 4TB M.2 become affordable. Let alone 8. Though I’m sure
@Darkhan has one on standby.

Being delivered Friday actually. Wow I am that predictable huh?DaMafiaGamer, electrosoft and Papusan like this.

I mean 8TB would probably last me through multiple machines. So it’s not that crazy when you think of it that way. But yeah that price.
I got you pegged my friend.

I think I’ll hold out for a 15 inch version of this with 10nm intel and rtx 3000.
-
Not that anyone cares but I'm getting whatever version of this has an RTX3080.
-
A 15” version would be awesome. Be curious to see if it could handle the heat from all the high end components.
What has me paused somewhat is when the 1000nit screen will be released? That would be amazing for so many things it’s sad that it isn’t being released with the current X170 configurations. -
Expect that screen will double the cost of the machine

17"3 4K LCD with micro-LED Display 1000 nits (HDR standard) won’t come cheap. New innovative tech (notebooks) is always expensive, brother Terreos. Go back in time and look on prices when 4K Tv’s becomes the standard.Falkentyne and raz8020 like this.
-
That’s a fair point. I never paid much mind to TV prices. I technically don’t own a TV. Not joking. So that kind of thing slipped my mind. I’m a projector guy with a 120” screen so no tv can match that.
Guess I’ll have to see how people like the 4K 500 nit screen on this machine. Should still be a good panel.
