Thanks wwoods! Yes the keyboard ribbon is an engineering shortfall in my book. It is a pain!

It is good to hear about RamExperts. Sounds like this upgrade was a good for you. I am one too that appreciates lots of memory! :)

Shortfall is being generous....there is no hint what so ever in the manual that they keyboard ribbon has those little funky locking mechanisms.....

Yea I was impressed with RamExperts, totally professional.....

My laptop has officially entered "Beast Mode"

That's hilarious! It took me about 90 minutes to figure that out on my D901C a couple of years back. I kept sliding the ribbon in, but it wouldn't hold. Finally, an internet search on "How do I plugin a laptop keyboard ribbon" revealed the secret!

Glad I wasn't the only one who struggled with this their first time around. :)

Ya would think, they would have a better mechanism, I mean really

Other than that issue, was a cake walk. Memory went in with no prob, booted up with no issue, and last night at work, I ran ALL my VM's in memory space, no swapping out at all.....was great.

And, have nothing but good things to say about RamExperts.

wwoods - A follow up on a previous post. I ran across a post stating the Intel RST v11 beta drivers support TRIM in a RAID-0 volume.

[EDIT] - A follow up on this post. A user filled up RAID-0 based drives (started on v11 beta) and deleted the files, subsequent rounds of write testing showed a significant slow down upon writes. The user then ran a Secure Erase on the drives, restored, and performance returned to its previous levels.
    [/EDIT]

    Just an FYI.

Sorry to interrupt, but there's something I need help with, and there's so many pages regarding the subject, that I just can't get the answer I need.

My 7280 is outfitted with the 485s and the i7 960. Video card temperatures don't concern me, they're pretty good. Processor temperatures, however, do.

My idle temperatures are within 55-62 celsius, and 70-86 celsius under load.

I did reach 94 on two cores yesterday and I panicked. Is that normal for 70%+ processor usage and 4 active cores? Not sure if this has to do with my hardware, or it is to be expected for that level of processor usage (even so, I still don't like it). Was running LOTR: War in the North when this happened.

I've seen several cases of people complain about such temperature ranges. Is this something normal for the 7280, or should I be worried about it? Also, I'm using the IC Diamond thermal paste. I seem to get a 2-3 celsius temperature reduction while using the NZXT Cryo XL cooler (set to max speed), which is not what I expected.

How long have you owned the laptop? They tend to collect a lot of dust in a short period of time. I might suggest taking off the bottom panel to get access to the fans and the heatsinks and ensuring both are cleaned with a bit of compressed air.

Hi Sith_Master!Do not worry about the temperature, if it was under load. You can try a benchmarks of processor LinX or Intel LinPack =)) .That's when you know that such a dangerous temperature!!!!! =))), she can reach it to 100C !!!!!!!

Right now I am idleing at 48,47,54,52,55,52 respectively. I have a 6 core. When I really push it with a lot of VM's running I will see between 65-75 on all 6. Also, not, I hiot those temps now with 4 drives running.

As was said earlier, they pick up dust. I also run with a cooler under it though. Once a month I open the back and hit it with a few good blasts of compressed air, I also clean the cooler fans.

I do this for all my systems.

Also regarding a system hitting 100c, just because something CAN doesnt mean it SHOULD. IMHO thats WAY to hot, if youre hitting those after cleaning out with air, I would consider re-pasting seriousely.

I haven't thoroughly cleaned mine out in a while, and I'm idling ~62C. Once I do that, the temps drop by ~5C or so for a month, then gradually start to rise again.

As wwoods said once a month cleaning is a very good routine to get into. In some environments it may need it even more often.

What processor are you upgrading from? As a lot have mentioned, it may not be worth it to upgrade if you already have one of the higher end CPUs on that machine. Take a look at some of these benchmarks to determine that.

I sell my Kingston 3x4GB HyperX 1866MHZ, because as the use of this memory is worse than useless ... no memory clocked at 1866, so it's best to take 2x8gb and enhance the stability and overclocking potential of the processor.

    its X78 ;)

I'm a bit ignorant on this, but here would be concerns:

    a) package / socket dimensions - is it safe to assume the socket for LGA 1356 is the same exact physical dimensions as LGA 1366 but with 10 less pins?

    b) do those 10 less pins map to something in X58 that does not map to X79? or what if the control signals on any one of the pins map to something else b/w the different pins / chipsets.

    c) if the e5-2470 is based on sandy-bridge, this has a completely different micro-architecture than the i7s desktops. what does that mean in terms of interoperability?

Hey guys, I havent been around for a bit, but I have some issues.

First, this is an awesome computer, and I am so glad I got it. I was going to upgrade my desktop too, but Instead, I just gave my old one away. There is no need. This puppy handles everythhing I can throw at it.

Anyway, on to my questions, all graphics related (in preparation for skyrim!):

    1. I have dual 6970s. I heard there was some kind of issue with them? Or am I getting confused? Anything I need to look out for?
    2. I cannot uograde my graphics driver for the life of me. I follow all instructions on AMD website, but after I remove and install, my cards are never detected. Any hints?
    3. I have the stock screen. It seems to have an overall brownish tint. I only really notice when watching movies - everyone looks like they have a really good tan. Is this screen related, card/driver related, or do I just need to use some utility to tweak it? I have used the stock windows utility, but I have been unable to achieve any results.

And finally, have they come out with new (lighter) power bricks yet? I am on the road 3-4 days a week, and it sure would be nice...

    Thanks in advance.

Ok so I've got a problem with my external mic on my 7280. I have a continuous background noise that sounds like electrical interference of some sort. Its a continuous pulse. The microphone cable is clear of all other cables. I've tried 2 different microphones. The on board laptop mic is disabled. Anyone have any similar problems using a mic on this beast? I'm at a loss, I feel like I've tried everything.

I was also experiencing the same sort of thing with Nvidia drivers. However I am currently on 275.33 and it's been running smooth.

Anyone experienced the same problems with windows updates? Has anyone tried the 285.62 Nvidia driver and is it working ok?

Any advice about things to try would be great.

    Thanks much.
