I have an issue with a raid I just setup. I just put two Samsung 840 pro SSDs in my x7200 and set them up to be striped. I'm using the latest Intel Raid drivers. The issue is I'm only seeing the throughput and stats that a single drive can provide. It seems as if I'm not getting any benefit from the stripe.
Any ideas?
-
First off. Nice SATA III drives, and we may come back to the SATA III portion of that after a few questions.
But for know, how do you know throughput and stats are for a single drive? Are you bench marking the drives? What kind of numbers did you get? What kind of numbers were you expecting? -

Hutsady, not sure where you're coming from on this.
A lack of TRIM for the RAID volume on the x7200 wouldn't lead to a premature end of the SSDs, but rather increase the period it takes that you need to leave the drives idle for drive GC routine or possibly a run Secure Erase more frequently.
In sum, RAID-0 on SSDs on the x7200, is it optimal? No, not especially. Catastrophic, definitely not. -

The TRIM command is designed to enable the operating system to notify the SSD of which pages of data are now invalid due to erases by the user or operating system itself. During a delete operation the OS will not only mark the sectors as free for new data, but it will also send a TRIM command to the SSD with the associated LBAs to be marked as no longer valid. After that point the SSD knows not to relocate the data from those LBAs during garbage collection. This will result in fewer writes to the flash, reducing write amplification and increasing drive life. Different SSDs will act on the TRIM command somewhat differently so the final performance can also be different between different SSDs.[3][8]
The command irreversibly deletes the data it affects.[14] -
I benchmarked a single drive with AS-SSD and also compared it with benchmarks online for the 840pro. The I benched the two discs in a raid 0.
To be fair, I'm seeing slightly higher than single drive specs. Around 540MB/s read and 500MB/s writes. 4k I'm seeing like 45-50MB/s. And IOops, around 85,000.
As far as TRIM goes, the samsung SSD utility, the Intel software, and several SSD tweaking apps report TRIM is enabled even in the raid config. As to weather it passes it to the drives, I guess that could be a question.
My understanding is that even without TRIM, these drives have really good internal garbage collection and shouldn't suffer from degradation.
Thanks for all the input and conversation. I want to get these setup as well as I can.
When I get home tonight I can do screenshots on the various programs/benchmarks and post them. -

The X58 chipset does not support TRIM in RAID, while its saying its "on" its not really doing it, only certain X79 mobo's do and its only been that way for less then 6 months.
What speeds were you seeing with a single SSD? If i remember right the SATA ports on these were II, not III so the speeds you're seeing are consistent with SATA II RAID 0 speeds. -
The Wikipedia article is incorrect. What TRIM does is make sure a NAND page is cleared out upon the deletion. This improves performance as NAND memory has to be "clean" before a write can occur. What TRIM does is do the cleaning well before a write can occur.
AnandTech - The SSD Anthology: Understanding SSDs and New Drives from OCZ and Why You Need TRIM For Your SSD have descriptions of what I'm talking about.
Here is a bench of my single C300 for comparison:
IIRC, benches I've seen for Samsung 830s on a SATA II controller fit inline with what you're seeing on the 840s.

Started a new thread about the x7200 replacement - http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...570wm-p570wm3-sager-np9570-owners-lounge.html

I guess I should be happy with the performance then. I want to add a third drive, but I don't have the bracket for the bay under the battery. Anyone know where I can order one?
Thanks! -
Where are you located? United States? If so, have you tried any builders? I'm sure there are others, but RJTech, AVADirect, Mythlogic, Sager, Malibal come to mind. I don't know if Sager resellers can help, but you could also try them as well.
-

If its a Sager branded computer you can get one from them too, your reseller can also help you get one. They normally come preinstalled though.

Double check for any parts bags in the box

Had my first display driver crash. I was lucky to have been using it for some time.
I think its time to update to the latest driver from January.

Hi
I own a Clevo X7200 2 years 1 month old, just out of warranty, from Shenke in Germany:
GTX 460M 1536MB GDDR5, i7-950, 8GB (2x4096) DDR3 RAM 1333MHz,
64GB SSD Crucial Real SSD C300 SATAII (CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1) Operating System,
500GB / 4GB SSH Seagate Momentus XT 7200.1 SATAII 7200U/Min (ST95005620AS)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
It powered off on its own last night.
Now it boots to the “Windows Closed Unexpectedly” screen with boot options, I wait there for a few seconds and just as the fan speed increases it powers off.
Or again I boot to the “Windows Closed Unexpectedly” screen with boot options, quickly hit “Start Windows Normally” option, and as the fan speed increases it powers off.
I could try to go into Bios options F2 but what would this prove?
I’m thinking maybe it’s the SSD with the OS on it that is failing so early in the boot process; I could take the drive out and see if it’s recognised by my other PC.
Any help in identifying the fault would be much appreciated.
Has anybody had similar issues?
Regards

If there is a shutdown within the BIOS, then my guess is something is wrong temperature-wise on the CPU or the cooling system and the system is shutting down to prevent any CPU damage. Since you wouldn't be taxing the CPU in BIOS, check fans, CPU heatsink, etc. -
-
Good call lads, it has been overheating. I unplugged all cables and turned it over, two fan intakes where covered with blankets of dust, must of built up overtime. I intend to take it apart this weekend and blow all the dust out from there. Cheers.
-
NP. Glad you found the culprit.

It does not need to be done hugely often depending on the atmosphere it hangs around in, but certainly something to check if it starts running hotter than normal.

I am looking to replace the thermal pads around my video cards and cpu anyone have a recommendation on a manufacturer and size i should get?
-
I've changed them on my p570wm, 680m's. No temp difference but they were dirty so I feel better. I used phobya 5w/mk ones which seem OK, wish I knew the original w/mk rating. Wish I could have gotten my hands on the fujipoly 11w/mk or 14w/mk ones but frozen CPU want stupid shipping price to uk, the fools.
1mm pads were perfect for the memory, the other bits on the gpu vary from 1mm to 3mm pad thickness, take your gpu apart and measure properly.
CPU area used 1mm and 0.5mm. Ideally I wish I had 0.75mm to replace the 0.5 ones but I couldn't find that thickness, 0.5 seems ever so slightly a bit too thin but 1mm doesn't give good CPU to heat sink contact raising CPU temps.
Fujipoly from frozen CPU only it seems is the best but phobya are a good 2nd. This was all for my p570wm, I've got a x7200 too but have never changed their pads, good luck -
appreciate the input . thanks man

Hello everyone, I just bought a used x7200 because I can't bring the tower I built when I move to Taiwan. I just have a quick question. The one I bought has a single gpu in it, yet all the pictures I see have 4 fans. I understand it's most likely because all the pics online are running dual gpus. My question is, do the single gpu units come with 4 fans as well or just 3? Mine only has 3. Thank you.
-
Yes you will only have 3 fans, your system is correct
-
Thanks for the quick reply, I saw that newer panthers only had 3 fans as well for single gpu setups. Now all I need is to buy a gtx 580m or 675m haha.
PS: Does anyone know who I can contact for an expansion caddy for this? I saw ztronics used to sell it but they're currently out of stock. Thanks in advance. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
What do you mean by an expansion caddy? For another hard drive or mounting one in the optical bay? You can contact your reseller you originally got it from they should be able to hook you up.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You can get them off ebay too, they are fairly common, you will just want a standard sized one, make sure it has a replaceable bezel so you can put the one from your optical drive on it.
-
This one, the carrier for the 2 hard drives under the touchpad. I bought the laptop used from a local guy so I don't really have a relationship with any reseller. I contacted eurocom but they're a bit expensive at $50 whereas ztronics had them for $30 when they had it in stock. I looked through ebay and no one seems to be selling this particular one. I've checked out the FS forums here and I didn't see any either. If you any of you guys sell this piece, let me know please. Thanks. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Not going to find that very often on Ebay since its only used on a few Sager models. You can contact Sager directly to see if they have any available.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You can try contacting sager.
-
Yeah, I'm gonna contact them once I get back home. I'm on my honeymoon at the moment haha. Thanks for the response.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
LOL, stop posting on here on your honeymoon, you should have other things to take your time
-
Well, I contacted Sager (honeymoon's over
) and they can't help me because my x7200 doesn't have a serial number. I bought it from a local shop so it's not stolen and I have a receipt but they said they can't help me. Even if I give them a part number or pics, they're insisting on getting a serial...
-
Is the serial # scratched out or something?
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Unfortueantly since its not a Sager many times they wont help, they only hlep with Sager computers. If its a Clevo that doesnt mean its necessarily a Sager. If you bought it from a local shop i'd guess its not a Sager since they dont sell them in stores. Can you take it back to where you bought it from? Looks like Eurocom for $50 will be your best bet.
-
-
Worst case scenario is, I just continue to work from 1 hdd till I move to taiwan at the end of next month. If I don't find parts there, I don't know if I ever will hahaha (except for eurocom) -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Let us know if you can get one directly from Clevo, they typically dont sell parts as you cant buy a computer directly from them either. If you're moving to Taiwan maybe you'll have luck going to their headquarters
-
There is multiple locations for Serial Numbers for them some times they are on the motherboard on a sticker location under Keyboard most cases* sometimes I have seen them in other places as well
since I posting here anyways anyone know if the Warm Reboot feature will work with the x7200 and the 8970m? I really need to upgrade one of my x7200 laptops to the ATI variant the other already is a 680m but the quirks of the 7970m prevent me from doing it on the other -

You'll probably have to try to get ahold of the person you bought it from to see where he got it.
You could try emailing [email protected] to see if they can get you one. Include the serial number from the computer in that email too. -

Alternatives I have used to get parts for clevos are
Eurocom (canada)
RJTECH
They both have been able to order parts from clevo for me but then again u pay more then getting the part direct
