If you actually meant mSATA and not SATA then there is no mSATA port on this machine (it pre-dates the slot). There is mini pci-E wireless and mini PCI-E slot based USB for TV cards. You could still plug it in with a 2.5" to SATA based adapter in the primary slots of course.

I would compare it to something new around the same performance and take a chunk off.

Maybe I'm better off parting it out. Like sell video cards first, processor and SSDs. Then put in the old 485M, buy a cheap LGA1366 and put in a HDD and sell the laptop cheap :)

I have a sager x7200 and have been living with the intermittent video card/crash recover for some time(as long as I have had the laptop). I had found reference to there being a bad run of the video card but tech support(From original retailer) has not been very helpful. They claim the sager only supports the GTX 560M and no other card. Is there a list of compatable cards that will work in the Sager (Clevo) x7200?

Every few months I had tried removing all drivers, installing all kinds of different versions of the nVidia/Sager drivers. And combinations of removing/installing in safe mode etc..... nothing has worked.

I was looking into upgrading to a GTX680M or a GTX670M but don't know if they will be plug and play or if there are other models that will work. Im just tired of having to reboot my computer whenever the videocard crashes/recovers.

Anyone know which card will work best for a headache free upgrade?

    - E

Officially, the 560M is as high as you can go. Many, including myself, have successfully installed dual-680M's but you need to use an NVidia hack to make it all work. You cannot go any higher than 680M.

FYI, I'm looking to sell my two 680M's. PM me if interested. :)

Do you have to run dual? Or can a single 680M be used? I don't play games anymore so a dual setup would go to waste. Is a hack or firmware upgrade required to run a single 680M?

Yes it is possible but in that case a single 560m is likely cheaper and will do the job without hacks.

Im a bit concerned with getting another one of the bad run 560m units, if purchased used. Or finding an affordable 560M new.
Is there a list of cards that can work in the x7200? Perhaps a 570M, 670M, 680M, or perhaps a Quadro(are they plug and play) ?

Anything beyond the 560m will require the customised firmware and drivers, it also targeted the 680m so i am not sure about other cards.

You don't need custom firmware but you do have to add your card in to the driver's .inf file and then use a hack called DifferentSLI to enable SLI. You don't have to have two but I heard there is less of a chance for a video driver crash when you have two video cards. I also read that Dell cards won't work on these machines.

have a question about a x7200, i recently got one of these bad boys from a friend who didn't want it anymore, i did insist out of honestly that this thing was still a beast and had potential, but alas he gave it away to me...so anyways, i have since then did basic upgrades, ram, ssd, better wifi card, and let me tell you this thing is still so powerful, well i was going through the manual, and i have a question about the TV Tuner... i have the antennaeq on the side, but am unsure on how to see if there is actually a card inside, i installed windows media center, but it says there is no card, i feel i may be missing something (lol either literally or missing inside windows 10) in the setup or it may not actually have the card inside, it seems though that in device manager i see the Infared device installed, so if thats the case it seems as though the tuner is there as well...anyways if anyone can help me out id appreciate it.

My clevo x7200 has infrared but does not have TV tuner card. I suggest you pull the bottom off and determine the make and model of the card, if it has one and then get drivers

Upgraded to Win10 recently, can someone point me to a good driver for the touchpad. The ones I found on thinks I'm not using a Synaptics touchpad and the one from Win7 doesn't install.

    Gents!

Not sure how alive this thread is, but a couple of questions if anyone is still around:

    - I have an X7200 with two 460M. I'm thinking of upgrading my cards and from what I can find out 680M is the best that will work (with some driver hacks etc.). Problem is, it's almost impossible to get your hands on two 680Ms in Europe. Only ones for sale are from US og Asia, meaning import taxes will be added. And even without that the price is still borderline ridicoulous. Any suggestions, or anyone here selling their 680s? Or should I just bin the idea of upgrading my cards?

    - Anyone that know of a working unlocked bios?

    Best,
    Morten

Yeah, it is sort of a project. Ofc. it not my main gaming pc, that’s my desktop, but I just sold my P375SM-A so would like a laptop I can use for light gaming when mobile. And then ofc. there’s also a bit nostalgia to it

There’s a i7-950 in and I could swap that for a i7-980X as they come pretty cheap on EBay. No match for modern CPUs, but still OK performance. Problem is the GPUs, as you point out they are simply too expensive. Almost like they are some sort collectors item

So, couldn't resist... bought some new parts for my X7200.

Yesterday I got around to install my “new” 980X processor and 16GB of Kingston Hyper PnP RAM (two sticks of 8GB each) bought on Ebay. Out went my i7-950 and 6GB of Patriot RAM (3x2GB)

However, now I get random freezes which I have newer had before. It will freeze anywhere, under boot, when in BIOS, during loading of Win 10 or in Win 10. It happens pretty quick, it hasn’t stayed alive for more than 10 mins.

I will ofc. check which part that causes the issue, but haven’t had time yet. Questions:

    - Has anyone had similar problems when performing upgrades on their X7200?

    - Don’t you agree that it’s most likely the RAM that causes the issue?

    - Win reports a NMI hardware fail, so in my opinion this is most likely not solved with a reinstall?

Nevermind my last post....found out one of the cooling pads fell off the cpu heatzink when I installed the new cpu...that was the one causing all the freezes Everything is working as planned now

Nice job, note that CPU has triple channel memory so 3x sticks gives the best performance.

It's not going to make or break performance. Just nice to have. If your old sticks are the same speed you could use one of those to get some tripple channel memory.

Hmm ok, so it would work with one if my old 2 GB sticks giving me 2 GB or tripple channel and the rest as dual channel so to speak?

I think it did support it that far back, it would mean 6gb tripple (3x2gb) with the rest at dual channel above.

Has anyone had luck with monitoring software that can see fan speeds? I've tried a few and none of them have been able to detect them. Bonus points for fan control but I'd be happy with just monitoring.

I just got finished cleaning out and oiling the fans for the summer and thought I'd have a better sense of when it's time to do so again if I could see fan speed.

You should be able to see basic fan speeds with ' Speed Fan' but in all of my 7 years of owning the x7200 I never found a way to control the fan speeds manually (except of toggling FULL mode and Auto Mode).

Since pretty much every laptop uses a different EC then it would be impossible to have a generic program tapping into that.

So who's still rocking the X7200?

I'm starting to get random shutdowns, and thinking it may be time for an upgrade to a full desktop. Also thinking it may be time to repaste the CPU and GPUs. Hiw all the other X7200s fairing out there in the wild in thier geriatric age?

I still have mine running to this day, the occasional repaste/maintenance helped a lot. Surprisingly, none of the stock fans died unlike my Tornado F5 which requires a new one every couple of months or so. A graphics card upgrade beyond 680M, a 1060 would be nice, since its really outdated in 2019.

I just re pasted mine last night as well. I think it may have solved the random shutdowns, although I need to get to Microcenter. My thermal pads are not thick enough so that is causing fans to run full blast all the time.

I also polished the CPU and heatsinks for a flatter more pure surface. Seems to have helped a little as well. Fans are still going as well. They are a ***** to clean the fan blades though. I still need to do that.

Compressed air holding the blades still should be able to get most off unless its been near tar sources like smoking.

Good point. I think it still has a layer of dirt from my last deployment to Kuwait. I've done two deployments with the system. Plus it sits running 24/7 in my office with a 125gal aquarium. Humidity is kept to a minimum with a lid on the tank though, but still. I think the combo created a mini layer that I need to remove with a pipe cleaner. Eventually lol.
