Anyway, about monitors... I saw this
Gateway Launches Three LED-backlit Displays - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News
Resolution is pretty bad (1080P) considering it's 24", but how's everything else? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
1080p is the norm now, nothing you can do about that sadly. Each company reports contrast ratio differently, that number cannot be trusted. I still recommend just going to a store with a bunch of monitors and looking at them in person to see what you like. Based off that you can compare your thoughts with those online to make a decision.
-
Cool. I'll add that on my list... with SSDs.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
SSDs are easier. For those I recommend one of the solid indilinx barefoot drives (OCZ Vertex are common) or an Intel G2. I had a sandforce drive but was really not impressed with it and am actually returning it.
-
Yeah SSDs are easier. I will try the OCZ Vertex 2 next year.
-
vertex drives are nice, but i had to replace about 6 of them so far.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Really? I was not aware of that John. I know I had some iffy performance with my Corsair x128 (same controller)
Overall, I am happiest with the Intel G2 drives of all I have used so far (all the current controllers except jmicron and Samsung) -
yeah..and 3 of these drives were just running in servers doing nothing fancy. rma is great, when you get a hold of someone. they replaced them without a hitch....now, i havent had a problem with them in over 4 months now. so what ever it was...may have been fixed with these firmware updates.
-
I hope that's a thing of the past because I'm really interested in those drives. Also Intel has new 25nm drives out.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
The new intel drives are not quite out.....just announced. They will not be in consumers hands for some time yet.
And frankly, the G2 drives perform quite fine. The main improvements with the G3s will be higher capacities and a small boost in performance. Lifespans should also be better but that is not a huge concern to most right now (as SSDs have not even been out long enough to establish the average lifespan for the first gen stuff). -

I came looking over here for some sort of information on the X7200 but all the recent posts have been about the weather, external monitors and SSD's.
Has anyone got their X7200 yet and if so what is the verdict! Or are they all still waiting for it to arrive or are they all happily sitting in a corner somewhere enjoying their new computers?
Or is there another "secret" x7200 owners lounge. One where only X7200 owners can come and play? -

The verdict is that there may be a problem with insufficient power supply design so people are waiting to hear from Clevo.
-
FrozenSolid Notebook Evangelist
I don't understand.....surely someone at Clevo doing the design work would have calculated the power draw for a maxed out system and made sure the power brick was adequateWouldn't they?????
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
You would think so......apparently they are too cheap for such simple thinking though.
-
For the overall cost of the machine i would think the PSU would have been the last thing you should need worry about and certainly not the first thing..
The machine has a TON of potential but...
I hope Clevo gets it sorted fast for current and future owners... -
The Eagle has landed!
I have a courier box from Sager, sitting on the floor, what should I do?
1. Open it and there goes the rest of my day
2. Ignore it and get on with the urgent work I must do
3. Attempt to do both
4. Waste $1100 buck worth of freight and send it back
5. Stress test it to the max
6. Do your work but do not look back at that box and long for the grand opening.
7. Ask yourself what would Jesus do? Hehe -
-
Open it and have some fun
..
They are working on a solution so either way it seems your covered ... Hopefully the new Power Supply wont cost you $600 in shipping though :O.. -
-
-
As for them detuning the machine to meet the needs of the current PSU that just cant and wont happen IMHO.. -
Resistence is futile!
It's time to open the box! -
It's the same size as my Vaio but twice as thick, one word can describe it "Beast"
Mmm who forgot to get a USA to NZ power adapter? Me!! -
FrozenSolid Notebook Evangelist
I would love to know how Clevo got themselves in this position. -

It is lovely, just stroking mine as I type!!!
The psu I knew would be huge, but nothing prepared me for this, it is twice as big as it looked in the video reviews!!
Installed everything, will do some testing and post later, work is really getting in the damn way!
Love it, love it, love it!! And that single 480m is damn powerful now that I'm seeing with my own eyes what it can do! -

Whats the best free anti virus? And is windows firewall ok?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Malware Bytes is pretty popular.
-
Do i need to install any drivers or does it come already upto date?
Theres one driver i have installed and thats me with Dirt 2 -
-
Yeah i stick with Avast and i cant say i have ever had issues... Once i awhile i will run other AV just to see if Avast is doing its job and it always seems to be doing just fine...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I will have to look into this. Had Symantec EndPoint from college but I just uninstalled it as it generally screws up all sorts of stuff like ATI Tray Tools
-
Yeah i run Avast on my desktop and it never gets in the way of anything so i just leave it .. For years i would not even run an AV then i would install them on occasion only to find nothing was wrong lol.. But yeah Avast is good .. I generally dont run them on my laptops since i dont do to much surfing on them just here and there ..
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Do I need to initiate scans or is it always actively going in the background? Looked like is only using 19 MB of ram, I can live with that for sure.
-
Its always active . It handles alot of stuff but never gets in the way... It will stop you from going to malicious sites as well etc ..
Its darn good for free .. Im sure people will argue there is better and i dont doubt it but i have been enjoying it for quite sometime and my friends use it as well with no complaints.. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Considering I have been using nothing, it sounds good enough for me haha. I just load up the Symantec every couple months, scan, uninstall lol
I found that good computing habits are the best line of defense
Have NEVER had a virus so far...... -
Yeah good computing habits are the best..
I have never really had anything harmful ever myself but its always a case of you never know when and on my desktop i just have to much junk but on the laptops i really dont put much if anything on them to worry about... -
I like its light weight and protection level. Just found a virus in the movie I was downloading,...no Inception for me tonight, lol -
eset nod32, this is also not bad
