    And sorry for the confusion.

    I meant to ask if there was a way to make the dedicated graphics run ALL THE TIME?

    Nope. Optimus is a software solution. The NVIDIA GPU is not connected to the display in any way. It routs through the integrated GPU.

    The choices are Intel iGPU or Optimus. And optimus won't let you use only the dGPU.

    I haven't tried it yet, but on Linux it seems to be possible to do so, as Optimus support is being developed with open source alternative drivers. Maybe in the future there will be alternative drivers for windows too, but who knows...
    And also, why?
    Intel iGPU is competent to most things and saves a big bit of heat.

    you mean the discrete gpu? you can set it in the nvidia profiles to have that chip handle everything.

    Pretty much all the time, as it seems to run whenever temps are above 40 C.

    But it is mostly quiet, a minor shoosh that you wouldn't even perceive. It may annoy you if you want deep silence though.
    At higher loads (like gaming) it becomes louder, but that's acceptable I think. Fan noise haven't bothered me yet, I'm always using earphones or listening to music on external speakers.

    Well when I wrote that post it wasn't under any serious load. Just surfing the web. And was noticeable cause the room was silent. It's on right now, and not too bad.

    The fan's a big deal for me...that worries me. Have to think a bit now...my other option is to shell out for an MSI GE620 (same problem with the 120w brick). Sounds like it's not too bad though.

    The Compal HGL30 in my sig has the absolute WORST fan....loud and whiny and it's on pretty much all the time. And the speakers were so dim that the fan pretty much drowned them out. This HP is better, real nice speakers, quiet fan....and no GPU to speak of.

    I mean the laptop doesn't do the best with heat as i'm sure you've read.

    I havent found the fan to be an issue. I'm watching tv and can't hear it. But if you sit in silence of course you'll be able to hear it. When the fan comes on it isn't loud or "whiny".

    Ok then we're back on the NP5160. Except one thing: Xotic and PowerNotebooks appear to have raised their prices today. Yesterday I had one priced out with FHD, BluRay, a quad core, the 500 GB XT, and 6230 WiFi. Today that's almost $1100. Oops. :)

    One thing I don't get: the 95% cg screen upgrade for NP 5165 is $15 more expensive than the same screen upgrade for NP 5160...and that's going from a FHD glossy to FHD matte! (NP5160's price is going from 1600x900 matte to FHD matte)

    BREAKING NEWS: Non-glare screens are canceled by Clevo !
    I got this info from my vendor. I ordered a W150HNM (GT540) with a matte screen at mid-April and they were waiting matte screen shipment but it was canceled. My vendor said that too many buyers are complaining that the matte screen is blurry.
    So I think the only matte screens remaining are those already bought by retailers. Stocks are ending.

    Can babyhemi, Justin@XoticPC or mythlogic can confirm ?
    (Can someone contact one of them ?)

    For those who are interested on the gaming performance of the NP5160 with the i5 2520M and 4 GB Ram, there is a Brazilian review (in portuguese, of course :p) but with print-screens of several games and their frame rate.

    Yes, just don't buy the cheapest player since it comes with no disk. I bought it thinking I'd save some money, but in the end no disk. So i had to call xotic and they gave me an oem version of cyberpower. (hope I'm not late)

    They only offer 2 bluray drives: a read and a write drive. There is not cheap drive. Anyways I was told that powerdvd software is provided with the read drive.

    And yes you're way too late. I'll have my lappy by Tues)

    OH my god !! I made the worst mistake I could on that !! I was talking about matte screens (not the glossy ones). They are canceling 1920x1080 matte screens, for other sizes I don't know but I think it is the same: I can't find any matte screen with W150HRM at my notebook retailer.

    (I have revised my previous post.)
    (I not english and I just learn this language, sorry about that.)

    EDIT: OK. I'm just silly. I haven't seen the "end of life information" at the end of this post.
    Sorry again about that guys.

    I wanted a matte screen and didn't want to spend 200 more to get it. Also, I don't game enough to make the 555 worth it.

    Are you kidding me? From xoticpc I made my purchase on April 3rd and I still don't have a tracking number (but no worrys its coming VERY soon). It takes a while to build these, ship them to the reseller (from sager), fit them with the requested parts, test and ship them to you. I had a billing problem the first week and a half, my laptop was shipped to Nebraska to avoid California tax, and I had to wait extra time for the 95% NTSC matte screen which was on backorder so I mean I expected to wait at least a month and I'm not surprised its taken this long. I wouldn't expect your laptop any time sooner then a month unless otherwise specified. You could always contact them for an explanation.

    Does anyone know why I dont have the minimum and maximum processor states under power management anymore? I had them at first but when I reinstalled windows on my SSD they are no longer showing up. I only have the system cooling policy option. I'm trying to limit my processor at 99% again.

    That is strange, it shouldn't matter what policy it's under. All of the policies support the CPU Power Management feature under advanced power settings. The only thing that could be an issue is if there is a chipset driver issue and Windows isn't able to hook into the API exposed by the chipset (never seen this issue in practice).

    (cross post from 5170 cause I assume the power adapters are the same and much more people reply in this one)

    My power supply started making sparking noises where it comes in from the wall (Near "Be careful, may become hot!"). I guess I need to inquire about a replacement. It still works but it is an annoying high pitched noise and smells slightly of burning. Would it be better to contact XOTICPC or sager?

    Contact your reseller immediately if you're under warranty (not Sager, as the reseller is your agent for talking to Sager). Contact Sager if you're not.

    If it's making noises or smells like ozone/burning, it could be a serious fire hazard. It sounds like a capacitor has blown or something has fried inside the power adapter.

    Yea...i'm pretty sure they actually do have a 'Phase 3' for you, for that screen upgrade/swap that you're getting. That happens at XoticPC, not Sager. If that's true, then you were put in a queue of all the orders that requested that screen, as I was, since sometime AFTER 05/05/2011 (since that's the date of shipment to Xotic, not the date when they received it).

    Still, here's to waiting :D

    oh shoot, well I hope that phase 3 already passed and they just didn't tell me about it because idk if I can wait a whole phase. I was really expecting to get the shipping notification today its been 7 business days since it shipped to Nebraska I just figured it would get there in a couple days and I'd have my tracking number. I'd feel much better if they gave me a tracking number for the Nebraska shipment so I wasn't guessing every day but no matter.

    Not that I'm aware of without third party software. Did you make sure you had the newest chipset drivers installed? Running them from the CD or via windows update should find them. For a last resort, it seems reinstalling Windows fixes this for nearly everyone (assuming you aren't overclocking and install the newest drivers). The only reasons I know that can do this are:

    * Old/corrupt chipset drivers
    * Overclocking and changing multipliers/speedstep
    * Windows install issues

    Reinstalling windows as a last resort (or running a system restore back to when it was working) should clear it up.

    Thanks for your help. I'm not overclocking or anything (this thing runs hot enough stock :p ). I was running the chipset drivers from clevo.com which were dated 12/10 so I updated to the 4/11 drivers from intel.com but that didnt change anything. It is definitely a problem with the mobo/chipset but I cant figure out what. I'll be home in a few days and I'll do the repair option with the windows dvd to see if that will fix it.

    I might declare insanity at the rate my shipment is going. My np5160 was shipped to Nebraska to avoid CA tax on May 5th, it is now May 17th and not even a tracking number. I must have the most unfortunate shipping time ever. (ordered April 3rd btw). Do you think they'd tell me if there was a delay due to a failed part or damaged part during shipping?

    holy smokes, I'll be out of town as of June 3rd now I'm worried. I sent an email this afternoon I should get a reply tomorrow. I never expected the shipping to be a month woops.

    Edit: Yeah it looks like the AUO B156HW01 V.4 (matte 95%nstc display) is whats causing the delay (even still). I'm going to be in Los Angeles as of June 3rd (till then end of June and elsewhere for the rest of the summer) so I asked if I can change the shipping address to that residence in LA. Awaiting reply on that. They gave me the option to just take the stock screen so I can get it on time but I still really want the B156HW01 V.4 and I don't know if I can trust any of the sellers or if there are any good alternatives. I am comfortable with replacing LCD's myself but I just don't want to get ripped off.

    Mine just went into phase 2 yesterday, and the only upgrades I have are the 2630QM, thermal compound and Intel 6230. So however long it takes them should give us an idea of the quickest turnaround Xotic can make.
