Let me put it this way. I rarely use my cd drive for anything besides the infrequent norton antivirus CD i get and for the installation of a few games (like the original Starcraft). Other than that its pretty useless. The reason I don't use it as much is because everything can just be downloaded, worst case I can use a flash drive to install something. In my opinion, the bluray drive is solely for people who plan on using it extensively from the beginning. Besides its never a good idea to guess on technology for use 2-3 years into the future for the exhange of spending money now.
-
-
My main reason for using the optical drive is movies, blu-ray in particular. If it wasn't for that I have an external USB DVD drive for the occasional need for an optical drive.
-
Exactly. There will be a time where bluray replaces traditional CDs for everything once costs come down even more. Until then its mostly for movies (unless you want to buy them for storage)
-
Well I think you've all finally convinced me, this is the config I'm pretty sure I'm getting:
Customizations:
Display: 15.6" 1920 x 1080 FHD LED Backlit GlassView Display
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM, 6MB L3 Cache, 2.0GHz
Memory: (4GB) 4096MB, PC3-10660/1333MHz DDR3 - 2 SO-DIMM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 485M 2GB GDDR5
Hard Drive: 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA 300
Optical Drive: 8X Multi DVD+/-R/RW RAM Dual-Layer Drive
Wireless: Internal 802.11B/G/N LAN and Bluetooth Card
Cooling: Stock OEM Thermal Compound, CPU & GPU
Warranty: 3 Year Ltd. Labor and 1 Year Parts Warranty with 24/7 USA-Based Support
Lotus P150HM
Product Subtotal: $1,799.00
I'll probably end up getting the slim blu-ray drive and another 4-8gb of RAM somewhere down the road. I just have to wait for my Xotic order on the 8130 to cancel, and I think I'll put in the new one. Malibal has been awesome answering my questions (as has Xotic, but they charge nearly double in shipping for it and cost more in general), so I'll probably put my order in there and wait until who knows when when they're shipping again
.
I'm hesitant to drop the CPU back to the 2630qm from the 2720qm, but my budget is more than maxed now. Granted, from what everyone says, it still blows away even the best previous i7, so it can't be that bad of a choice.
As long as I can get 2 hours battery life minimum and get something that weighs under 8lbs, it's already better than my xps laptop.
Thanks guys!
Edit: Despite this being the 8130 board too! -
First impressions: so far really liking the computer. The screen, keyboard, weight, fans aren't bad, and runs cool. I still need to install photoshop to test noise
Only real issue is battery life, 2:48 while not bad for this computer, I'd like more. So I'm debating switching to 5160 for that reason. I will take some pictures later today, maybe also take off plastic covering
Oh backlit keyboard would be nice
But I'll be fine once I remember where the screen brightness and volume keys are. Also will take some getting used to 16:9.
-
2:30 hours is enough for a movie. Should be a good laptop for home use. I went back and forth debating the 5160 vs the 8130, but it really is only a $300 difference between them and the 8130 comes with a much better graphics card, better sound, better screen, etc.
The 5160 is close but according to reports from other boards, Optimus is a nightmare at times for gaming. It's one of those "almost there" techs. -
Coming of a computer that gets 2hrs max with wifi off, that ~3hrs is amazing. Just out of curiosity, that 2:48 battery life, is with wifi off or on? Also what where you doing on the laptop (ie browsing the web or writing something, etc...)
-
Using battery bar, wi-fi on
-
Hey Burkle!
Nice to see you got your laptop! If you have a video camera please show us the beautiful screen
Maybe a movie or a game in action with different lighting (if you have the time) I would appreciate it a lot, as it would give me something to drool over =]
-
will iPhone 4 video with Serenity on blu-ray do?
-
BUUUURRRRKLLLLEEEE!
Hi.
Glad to see you got your lappy. How is the matte screen? -
My god. Turning it off should easily add 30-60min on that time too. This is easily the best thing in the world
-
For once I can't see myself in the screen
Then I'll have no use for it .... -
First video review of this model: YouTube - Sager NP8130 gaming laptop Review PowerNotebooks
-
The cropping makes the screen look like it's 4:3
-
For my needs I mean when I have to buckle down and write a paper or something the internet is the bane of my world
So the additional battery life is very welcome
-
could somebody please help me a little bit with my questions below? I'm under a little time pressure since my old laptop gave up on me and urgently need a new one..
thanks a lot..
-
I just realised I have a Windows 7 OEM copy (Used it for my desktop I built). Will this work on the NP8130? How much better would it be if I purchased Windows 7 along with the laptop?
Is it a long process to install Windows 7 and update? (I can't remember and lately I have been afraid to reformat my current desktop).
Thanks for your input =] -
If you installed your OEM copy on a PC already technically you can't / shouldn't install on another PC even if it's removed from the other PC. That's the caveat with OEM versions, they're tied to a single machine only. You could try it, but chances are it would ask you to call Microsoft when acivated and they may or may not allow it to be installed on this machine.
But as far as installation, it's quick and easy. Much faster than XP or Vista, and typically has a nice set of drivers built in. Granted since most of the hardware in this machine was released after Windows 7, you will most likely have to install your own provided by Sager or Clevo. -
It will probably tell you that the key is in use, as the OEM copy should be locked to the desktop's hardware.
-
If time frame is an issue, you will be on backorder for at least 2 weeks to receive this laptop.. ( next shipment planned on Feb. 7th )
Probably by beginning of next week, who knows how long it will take...
If time frame is an issue, I think you should look to other laptops.. -
Jst ordered np8130 with base config + upgrade to 750 GB 7200 rpm from xoticpc... I got windows 7 Ultimate DVD as a present when it was launched (from house party
signed by steve balmer )
Total damages 1292$ -
Congrats
-
Its actually really easy to just call Microsoft and let them know your old computer blew up and you couldn't replace it with the exact same hardware. they will let you use your OEM Windows 7.
-
Honestly I think the wait is going to be a bit longer if the shipments come this infrequently. I ordered Jan 18 from xoticpc and the wire transfer was received Jan 24. I contacted them and could not get a definite answer if I was in the next batch that was shipped. The sooner you get your order in the better chances you have. As stated, if you need a laptop soon, I would look elsewhere. I heard that the new Dells will be released soon (i heard 1st week of Feb.) and the HP sandy bridge has already been released.
-
yea.. my first choice was the new quad core series by HP, from there I went to the new lenovo y460p/560p and now I'm here..
Currently I am using public computers on campus and just install trial versions of the software applications that I need, but this, of course, is just a temporary solution...
as far as time pressure is an issue, I would just like to settle for a laptop, place the order and have this concern of my desk for now... Also, some retailers have special introductory offers right now.. I just thought, if I'd wait longer I might end up paying more...
But, all in all, I'm pretty much sold for the NP8130 right now.. just would have like some clarification on the points I've posted
cheers -
I was in the same boat. There was a $500 coupon for the dv7 a few weeks ago and I was a click away from getting it, but I stumbled upon the 8130 and its awesomeness. If you're university is anything like mine, there should be computers with everything a student needs already installed. If you can wait I highly recommend this laptop as it has everything a student needs and a lot more.

Because fraud is awesome.

I think the best you can do to get answers for your questions right now is to take a look at the video reviews from xotic and powernotebooks, as well as Forerunner's review of the 8150 ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo-reviews-owners-lounges/549118-sager-np8150-clevo-p150hm-review-forerunner.html).
I am a Sager virgin as well, but recently placed an order for an 8150 based on these reviews, and staying tuned on the forums. If what 99% of the Clevo/Sager owners here say is true, then I don't think you need to worry about the build quality. Just do your due diligence, and you should be ok! Hope this helps... -
yeah, it has the adobe design suite as well as CAD applications installed... however, 3D modeling/rendering and of course simulation software are missing..
it's just a bit inconvenient for me right now since usually I would work in the studio..
performance-wise I am not worried at all, it's just about those little details..but I think I am gonna place an order soon,...
I've already seen the videos and, as I said, I am pretty much sold...
thanks -
Anyone thought of dual-booting Mac OS X on one of these? I'm pretty sure I'm going to when I get mine (my friend and an online guide will help me do it,) so it'll be almost like I'm using a really high-end Mac Book.
I love Mac OS X and the only thing that kept me away from Mac is how expensive they are yet spec-wise don't compare to PCs in the same price range. So I opted for this laptop, but luckily there's a way around it!
Which begs the question: do these come with the OS discs? Or will I have to make my own? I can if need be, but it would be so much easier if it came with it! -
Cancel it and get the hybrid SSD harddrive. That's probably the thing I'm most excited about. Should save on battery life as the hard disk only writes to disk when the 4 gig SSD buffer is full.

Crossing my fingers for a delivery in mid-late Feb. -
Haha meant yesterday. Got the money in and everything.
PowerNotebooks.com -
Well thx for the advice but now its late .. and moreover I dont care abt battery life.. not much of a commuter...
-
You can always change your configuration until it is actually put together.

Is there significant performance gain except for the battery life?
-
hi everyone, I ordered mine last week through a reseller here in singapore. This is my first sager laptop and I was curious if it ships with a recovery CD/HDD partition/or a software that lets you burn your own recovery CD. I noticed on the unboxing videos that there is no mention of such CD/DVD, do I have to order them separately? Thanks in advance
-
Yes, as well as a reduction in temperatures and faster boot times.
-
Call it what you will but if you paid for the software to be used on one machine and that one machine goes away, its not fraudulent to use the software you purchased on a new machine. Microsoft also doesn't seem to mind either... I've already done this with my desktop computer. It would be fraudulent if you had the software installed on more than one machine at one time, but thats not what the poster is requesting.
-
That's not how it works. It caches the most used files on the SSD, primarily boot files. So it may take a few reboots or opening your most used apps a half dozen times or more before performance improves completely, and it is constantly changing based on what files you use. Battery life is comparable to a traditional hard drive, maybe only slightly better.
-
I know optimus isnt good for gaming, and this machine doesnt support it
But cant manufacturer put an option in the bios to choose between integrated card and dedicated upon boot? -
I wish. I have been asking that for a long time. Just a "Press F6 to choose GPU" or whatever option at bootup would be awesome.
-
Does IC thermal compound worth it?
Consider I might overclock the GPU -
Haha Omega Archetype
You intend to run Snow Leopard on a Windows PC? Do be careful though, I've read that you might be violating the EULA for Mac OS X and may be in a legal gray area. Also, you might not be able to download the latest updates to the OS. Finally, if you have or are able to afford an Asus Eee PC, that would be the best option as quite a number of hackintosh users have managed to install OS X onto that netbook.
I agree with your comments on the Mac OS X. It's easy to use and the dual boot capability is awesome for people (like me) who have OS-specific applications that are necessary for their work/studies. And like you said...I can't reconcile the price that I pay for a Mac and the type of hardware inside. I think a Mac has a poor cost:hardware power ratio. -
what if i have already installed windows 7 from the dvd i got on my laptop which got stolen. can i use that key on new laptop .. can i ask microsoft that...
-
$40 is a bit steep, but it will improve your maximum thermals a decent amount (usually). I opted for it because I didn't want to open my brand new machine for a while.
It will violate the EULA but nothing legal about it. You can't get sued, jail time, or go to court. It's purely against the Apple agreement, if it will run at all on the PC. Not sure where that stands these days but it used to be restricted to specific hardware.
You would have to provide proof of ownership. Otherwise you could rip off the key from any other computer and claim yours was stolen. So as long as you registered or have a receipt you should be fine if you bought the Windows yourself. However if it was the OEM version that came shipped with the laptop then no, it's tied to that machine specifically. -
Well it's mainly an idea, still not 100% sure if I'm going to go through with it. I'll have to do alot of research into it first though. See what the drawbacks are (if any) or if it's possible that doing so will compromise my PC in anyways. I'm not just going to go into it without known all the info that is important (especially if it'll ruin my PC, cause it's too expensive to just throw it away like that.)
-
Speaking of Mac OS X, when it comes to virus/spyware protection for Windows PCs, what's the best ones (hopefully free) that will keep my PC running nice and fast always? That's one reason I wanted a Mac as well.
I'm currently using Avast on my Desktop (which seems to work great,) but what is the best way (that you've found) to keep your PC running at it's highest quality possible?
Is not using it for internet browsing a good solution haha? I'm almost willing to do that lol. This is a big investment for me (one that I will not be able to repeat anytime soon,) and would hate to have my PC run like crap within the first few months due to some random virus or spyware.
If I do browse with this online I'll definitely be limiting my browsing to sites like Kotaku, Facebook, deviantart, gametrailers, epicbattleaxe.com, youtube, wikipedia and a few others. Going to try to stay away from unknown sites, but is that enough to keep those things out of my system? -
What we always put on is Microsoft Security Essentials, its free, does a great job and most important it doesn't take a lot of resources and stays out of your way!
