Just saying that the 8130 cannot handle the 485m/6970m. Its not just a matter of using the 8150's power bricks. This laptop wasn't made to handle 100w GPU.

I don't know the brand for the DDR3 memory, but it's pointless to get 1600MHz of memory if you're getting the 2630QM; on that processor, it's just going to downclock to 1333Mhz.
I got the updated intel wireless card because it supports bluetooth and there are good reviews about it; internet accessibility is pretty important to me.
And for me, the biggest attraction for the 8170 has to be the fact that it has two HDD bays...that was actually one of the prerequisites for my next laptop, but I compromised with the 8130. Of course, that and it's ability to support the 480M and the 6970M...oh and also it's amazing cooling capabilities.
I convinced myself that yes, the 8130 will and should be able to support the 485M with the power brick...and since it's pretty much going to be sitting at my desk and not being moved around all that much, why not just connect a 3TB external HDD to it? It would be the same as having two HDD bays.
edit: Ok correction....hispeed just told us it won't be able to take the 485M or any 100W GPUs. But that's ok. Who's to say that in the future, there won't be a mGPU that is more powerful than the 485M and has a lower power consumption than the 460M?
Mr. Mysterious -
A couple of points:
The 2630QM does support 1600mhz ram, but only in the 2x2gb configuration.
The default clevo card does support bluetooth. -
Thanks mrmysterious, but I did mention it was 1333MHz.. not 1600MHz
What I want is: Since it comes with 2*4GB 1333MHz memory, I want to add another 2*4GB memory to make it 16GB.
I was just afraid that different brand/memory chip with the one comes from Sager will make it unusable or some performance trade off??
I know it is overkill for many, but due to the nature of my study I play a lot with virtual machines (several at a time). 8GB maybe sufficient, but 16 will be perfect
So any reason too choose Intel 6230 over the default card? What is the specific model/brand on the default card? -
The intel card has better range and throughput, but it will be bottlenecked by the router and your isp anyways. It also has a feature that allows it to act as a miniature wireless router called mywifi.

Argh, I feel like I'm on the edge of my insanity!
Either go with a stock 8130 with the wifi card and blu ray drive....
Or go for the stock 8170 for only $80 more....I can always add the wifi card and blu ray drive once I earn up enough money...
This thing is driving me crazy!
Mr. Mysterious -
Yes! get the 8170! it has a big screen! it can be upgraded to the 485m! blu-ray is overrated! the stock wifi card is ok!

D'oh! Fine, I'm sticking with my 8130...it's not a bad machine. I'll go for the top of the line in my next PC then...Might as well buy a desktop, eh?
No, I'm staying with my 8130. And that's that.
Mr. Mysterious -
NAOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
get the 8170
i mean it!! -
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
So that you would win our little race....tsk tsk tsk. If I win, I'm getting the batmobile.
Mr. Mysterious -
Fine, when you win, you get the worst batmobile that me and robin made back in the 90's...
I was going to put it on craigslist anyways. -
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Uh, no. I want your current batmobile. And then I'm going to burn it in front of you while laughing.
Mr. Mysterious -
The one from the movie with george clooney and arnold schwenegger is much worse.
-
You know, you remind of this guy I know named edward. Supervillan turned private investigator...
Wait.. What are you talking about??? -

E. Nigma?
I think the closest equivalent is Mysterio from Spiderman.
On a different note, we'd better get back on topic before the admins kick us out, lol.
Laptops...laptops laptops...*nods* Insert technological discussion here: |---------|
Mr. Mysterious -
Sure, mysterio may be similar to the riddler, but he is not in the same universe... there is no real way to compare him.
So, lets discuss some technology... how about trucks and planes? what keeps them in the air and on the ground?.... such a slender thread... it would be such a shame if someone where to sabotage it... I wonder which international conglomerate owns UPS? Oh, who knew... its Wayne Enterprises!!! -
Mine just shipped! it will arrive the same day as yours, mysterious, now we are literally dealing with hours, minutes and seconds...
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
It still means that even if you get yours before mine, my order was after your own, which means I got mine faster than you got yours. You lose either way.
Excuse me...I have a bonfire to prepare.
Mr. Mysterious -
Hey... you got yours rushed... We ordered within 2 hours of eachother. I am still the underdog here! And if I win, I get your cat!!!!!
-
Mine should be right behind yours so hopefully it ships out on Monday. Probably going to take all week to get all the way across the country which means if it ships on Monday I may not get it until the following Monday =(
I should have paid extra for faster shipping. -
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
You're not getting Beyonce!
Mr. Mysterious -
I was joking. I'm sure you realize that if I really wanted your cat I could just swoop into your house and take it, and you would not even realize what had happened until "Beyonce" becomes a trained member of the justice league for medium sized animals.
-
I'll try not to taunt you with pictures when I get mine before the two of you. -
Still waiting on mines to ship so your not alone.
@Mr.Mysterious: do you really want a 17 incher? it's gonna be hard to move around. would never get a laptop larger then 16", but that's just me. 17-18 = desknote territory. and I'd just much rather get a desktop at that point. -
SHHH tell him that it is a good idea to change his order to the 8170!
-
Oh. I mean you should definitely go for it and change your order as many times untill you get exactly what you want!
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Lmao. You guys are funny.
I wasn't planning on moving the machine around anyways. My HDX16t just stays in place, regardless of how big or heavy it is.
For portability, I have a speedy netbook. And it's 2lbs. Yeah...that's right. Two...pounds. Does everything I want or need it to do.
To the guys that already have your PCs: With the CD/DVD that came with your machine, were you able, using the optical drive, to install W7 onto a different hard drive?
Mr. Mysterious -
Wow you have a point... Maybe you shouldn't even open the package when it arrives. Perhaps you should go to the ups website, punch in the infonotice number and click "return to sender". Then, get back to the forum, admit defeat, and order an 8170. But if I get mine first, you should probably just keep the 8130...
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhno.
Mr. Mysterious -
Hah! doesn't matter. Mine will still come first... Right now, it's en route to portland.
-
@dulmid I was looking at the Asus as well but went with the 8130 for the subtle design, extra ports (I plan on using them) and great introductory price.
1. Memory brand isn't an issue unless you plan on overclocking your system. You can always upgrade to any brand of DDR3 memory in the future. Macs are 'special' in the fact that they don't like some kinds of memory, or perhaps the modules were bad.
2. Intel wireless has 3 vs 2 antennas. The standard card will work fine for you in most cases. I don't think it's worth the price to upgrade. I didn't choose the intel card personally because driver support is lacking for an operating system that won't be discussed here.
3. 8170 like 8150 can handle faster components that generate more heat and draw more power. It also has a 2nd hard drive bay. If you just want a larger screen you might want to conciser just buying an external monitor. You can get a decent 23" for less than $200. I find having a 2nd monitor handy but you obviously can't take it with you. -
Uhh actually the resellers have told us that the standard clevo wan card has 3 antennas also. And brand never matters with ram, but it is a good idea to pick modules with matching cas latencies.

Is anyone else checking their tracking number every hour?
Mr. Mysterious -
yes, yes I am.
By the way, I found that tracking with this website gives you a little more detail, along with a map: Boxoh universal package tracking: UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL with RSS and Maps
Also, what time zone are you in? -
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
I'm on the east coast (yeah, that pretty much guarantees you will get your package first
). Thanks for the link.
Mr. Mysterious -
Well... actually since the eta is the same, you will probably get yours first since you are ahead by 4 hours.
-
THAT IS AWESOME!
-
Thanks 2MNY.
So is it safe to say that, I can mix between two brands of memory as long as they have the same latency?
I already check that default card has 150Mbps, while Intel 6230 has 300Mbps and 6300 with 450Mbps.. I choose to go with the default since I am using it only for internet, not network gaming.
Yes, the only consideration to buy 8170 in my case is: It has large 17 inch and 2nd harddrive bay with RAID 0 configuration. But they are hundred bucks more exp, starting at lower specs and 900 gram heavier (not that I'm planning to move it everyday, but occasionally). I plan to get an external 23" Dell Ultra sharp IPS panel 1920*1080 which is like 273 Sing Dollar in Singapore (220usd?) .
Anyway, I just make my order on NP8130 half hour ago with a local reseller.
But contrary to others, I actually hope it won't come so soon. I have a big exam in 2 weeks time. So it will be a disaster if my notebook arrived earlier than that
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Lol, tell me about it. I have an exam on Thursday, and my notebook is coming in on Wednesday...I don't think I'd be able to study that well for it, if I'm checking my email all the time. Thankfully, this weekend I made sure to make up for it, by doing all my prep right then.
Mr. Mysterious -
Lol are we all students here?
-
Not me but I often wish I still was! Sometimes, compared to actual work, term papers and exams seem like a cake walk!
-
bull! school is way harder than my job... Yes, I go to school. I may be the "worlds greatest detective," but there are a few things that still confuse me... and Lucius taunts me for it!!! he's always like "You should have stayed at Princeton, Bruce." Sometimes even Alfred jokes about it!!! And he only went to butler school!
All I have to do for my job is be a rich person, own my company and beat up super-criminals at night dressed as a bat! -

That's all right, I'll take care of your 8130 for you
Mr. Mysterious -
What physically is different on the laptop in order to not make it work with the higher powered cards? If it has the same size chasis and can physically hold it, what is stopping you from putting it in besides providing the additional power requirements? Do you have sources for stating that the 8130 will not accept a 100watt GPU card?
