They probably won't install the RAM for you (I can't be sure, though, I'm sure they'll answer), but especially with the NP8130, it's an incredibly simple job. You take off four screws and plug it in. Note that the best configuration for memory is always to have multiples of two, so you should either use 2 DIMMS or 4 DIMMS. You can have 2x4GB and 2x2GB if you want, but make sure to have 4 if you're not using 2.
-
Yes, I have done that for my old dell: changing internet card, hdd, and memory. Just was not sure how would that affect the warranty in this case.
Thx for the info about the memory regarding the "multiples of two". So, if I'd want to have i.e. 12GB, then 2x4 + 2x2 is better than 3x4? Interesting. -
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
All of the things you listed shouldn't affect your warranty. You can add or replace pretty much anything you want, with the caveat that your warranty will not cover the parts you've added (because they didn't come with the machine). Your reseller may have a different policy, but most have one similar to the above
-
The warranty on Sager's is pretty much this: If they put it in, it's covered. If they didn't, it's not. Beside that, everything's covered as long as you didn't break it. You won't find any "replacing this part will void your warranty" stickers on a Sager.

Please re-read what I wrote and you quoted: "...the gorgeous standard glossy screen..." The PowerPro R 11:36 does not come with a matte screen.
I. For special memory configurations it would be best to give me a Toll Free call at 1-877-711-1777 between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM Pacific Time Monday through Friday.
II. IC Diamond to CPU + GPU is not really necessary with the PowerPro R 11:36, nor is a cooler pad, unless you are doing a lot of intense gaming...and even then it is really more of a luxury than a necessity.
III. There is no MSI logo for the barebones model, but if you don't like our logo you can just peel it off and go totally stealth. Or, if you want the MSI logo then look at the branded version which is the MSI GT683R.
Now, we should stop hijacking this Sager NP8130 thread, and continue with any more questions either in the MSI forum, or just contact me directly
-
Ops, totally true about the screen, sorry...
And yeah, I should probably move to the MSI forum as now I am closing on this system, though the sager remains a possibility.
Thx for the honests words about the diamond compound, too.
So I will see you there. -

@brett1111, looks like Donald answered your questions. If I can help with anything I am available by PM or Email and would be happy to help.
-
Two days right after I order my 8130, Xotic offers free shipping on the 8130. I paid $28 for UPS Ground, and I've already sent an email to Xotic to ask whether or not my $28 can be refunded. You guys think I'll get the refund?
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Hmmm, that's a tough one. I think they've been very nice to everyone (including me) so they'll give you free shipping, but you'll probably be the last person they'll do it for. (i.e. They won't do it for someone who placed their order before you).
Mr. Mysterious -
I believe the maximum memory that the i7-2630qm can deal with is 8 GB: Intel® Core? i7-2630QM Processor (6M Cache, 2.00 GHz)with SPEC Code(s)SR02Y
The i7-2720QM should handle up to 16 GB of memory. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
That is not correct. the Intel® i7-2630QM will also support 16GB regardless of what the Intel whitepaper says. We have built literally hundreds of them with 16GB and it supports all 16GB.
-
Thank you for clarifying. I was starting to question my choice in processors!
-
Thanks Intel! That would have been nice to know before I ordered my 8130. I upgraded to the 2720QM because I believed their whitepaper...

hey all, been looking for a new laptop. I want the best gaming laptop for 13-1500 bux out the door. Am i in the right place and if so, who do I get it from

To answer the question. I believe the NP8130 is one of the best gaming laptops for $1300-1500 -
I agree wholeheartedly. Even the stock machine is well equipped with i7-2630QM, 8GB RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HDD, 1920x1080 95% glossy screen (or 1920x1080 matte), GTX 560m. You just can't beat that value. I know the Asus G53SW's can be found for $1100 or so, but they come with 6GB RAM, and I know the screen isn't nearly as nice.
-
is there any suggestions on where to purchase it from
-
I literally just typed like 3 paragraphs and my browser just closed.... Bascially just search the forum. Post in that sub forum. Or check out these U.S resellers (Not all of them...) Malibal, XoticPC, Powernotebooks, Mythlogic.. I got mine from Xotic, but a lot of members have been doing well with Malibal. Malibal also offers a discount to NBR members...
-
Most people seem to recommend the Sager / Clevo Resellers who participate on this forum. (the members with gray usernames) There is also a sticky in the main Sager / Clevo forum if you want a complete list of places to purchase from.

hey, does anyone know if I'll run into any problems using some wireless headphones with this? These are the headphones Sennheiser Worldwide - wireless headphones RS 160 - wireless stereo surround headphone - Private Audio. I've heard that the audio quality from the headphone jack is bad in this laptop, would getting a high quality headset be a waste with this laptop? Is there anyway to improve the headphone sound?
-
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
There shouldn't be any problem using high quality headphones. I have a high end pair (can't mention the name by forum rules, so I'll leave it at that) and they sound as good on my Lotus P150HM as they do on anything else. The headphone jack should be as good as the cans you run it to, it's the speakers that you're limited to when mobile- being built in and all.
If you enable the THX audio, set it to external speakers rather than headphones, and play around with some of the settings, the sound is more than adequate. -
How to improve headphone sound: go into the THX manager and tell it that your headphones are stereo speakers. Sound fidelity will double immediately. It's really sad.
-
SO close to pulling the trigger on one of these. Is there significant Battery life reduction going from an i7-2630 to i7-2720? This will be a college work/gaming laptop. Also, how would the GTX 560 fair with games such as. EVE online, BF2, and Starcraft 2?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
There will be virtually no battery life difference between the two processors.
The nVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 192bit w/1.5GB GDDR5 is a Class 1 gaming card, so it will play all of those games smoothly. -
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
The headphone jack is fine. If you want the highest quality digital audio, you would have to use HDMI, or the Optical SPDIF port. The optical SPDIF is probably the best option for sound out. I used to use optical SPDIF for headphones back in the day but you need an external device.
Personally though, for convenience, I would use a high quality set bluetooth headphones. With the lastest Bluetooth revision and AD2P, you can set the quality level of the audio output manually. Since the Bluetooth is built in you don't need any silly docks or dongles for wireless. -
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
Only two games that will bring the 460M/560M to it's knees in my experience are Metro 2033 and The Witcher 2. All the other games including SC2 can basically be maxed except without antialiasing. -
Between running at lower resolution with AA on or higher resolution with AA off, running at higher resolutions will give better image quality. In this regard the np8130 beats out gaming laptops with lower screen resolutions in picture quality.
-
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
Yes, 1080p on such a small 15.6" LCD gives an incredibly pixel density as well. I find this almost negates the need for AA (although it is always nice).
A 1080p 15.6" LCD has an approximate pixel pitch of 180µm and a resolution of 141.2 pixels per inch.
A 24" 1080p desktop monitor has an approximate pixel pitch of 277µm and 91.8 px/in. -

1. How long can the battery last off the adapter when you're not gaming or watching movies?
2. How loud is the fan when on full setting? How loud is the fan on average? (If we were in a dead silent library, would the fan be of any disturbance).
3. Is the chassis of the laptop plastic or matte? Is it a fingerprint magnet?
4. How good are the speakers compared to your average everyday laptop speakers? -
1.) approx 3 hours
2.) On full setting, it's a hairdryer. On average, not bad at all. I wouldn't get disturbed by the fan in a dead silent library, but some might.
3.) matte. Not a fingerprint magnet, but it is a dust magnet.
4.) I go spoiled with my last laptop's speakers in that they were amazing, so compared to those, these aren't that great. That being said, they're definitely passable with the THX software installed.
EDIT: Also, buying some IC Diamond today, so I should be able to apply it Wednesday or Thursday. Any hints from people that have done it before? How long should I expect it to take to apply it? -
3 hours on a gaming laptop? Tell me this is too good to be true. My current laptop can only last an hour, if even, just doing the simplest of tasks.
So for the most part, you're saying the fan stays silent? That's a key thing I'm worried about. My current laptop is infamous for its overzealous fan and overheating problems causing BSOD while gaming. The loudness of the fan is ridiculous.
It's a Asus G51, in case anyone has experience with this horrendous crap. -

Here you go, straight from their site:
Application
Just of note, if you've ever used other cooling compounds like Arctic Silver- IC Diamond is much thicker and harder to work with, so it takes some finesse. -
I thought the battery life was too good to be true, too! When I got my laptop, it was one of the first things I tested.
Oh, I definitely wouldn't call it silent, I just wouldn't call it loud or annoying.
EDIT: Thanks, Malibal! Would you recommend that I stick to just pasting the GPU, or should I also be pasting the CPU? Also, will I need to paste the heatsinks or anything? (I've never really done this, but I wanted to give it a shot on my own) -
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
^ I was actualy disappointed in the battery life since we have Sandy Bridge processors. The battery life on these notebooks should honestly be closer to 5 hours if Clevo had enabled the IGP. Oh well.
-
^^Switchable graphics would have been nice, but supposedly it's been causing problems on a lot of laptops. Perhaps in a year when they've worked on the kinks the Sagers will be brought on board.
-
Anthony@MALIBAL Company Representative
You'll have better results if you just put paste on one surface. That is, put the paste onto the CPU/GPU and then push the heatsink down on to it. If you put grease on both surfaces, you risk adding air into it which will make it less effective.
You may wish to paste both the CPU and GPU if you have enough paste, it wouldn't hurt anything
-
Thanks. I appreciate the help.
-
I use the P151HM1 / 8130 everyday, and yes you can get up to 3 hours of battery life.
-
saturnotaku Notebook Nobel Laureate
No, no it wouldn't have. I returned my W150HR (same as Sager NP5165) because of Optimus. I will hold on to my new system (same as the 8130) like grim death because I have a feeling that Optimus will be worming its way into high-end laptops in the near future. If not with Sandy Bridge, then Ivy Bridge. -
Switchable, but hard switchable would be ideal IMHO. That way you have the option.
-
saturnotaku Notebook Nobel Laureate
If all laptops had the same switching capability as the M11x R1, I would be a very happy individual. -
Thus why the rest of my sentence existed. It'll be nice when it works...for now, it doesn't.
-
To be honest, a hard switch would be better, requiring a reboot. I only say this because with the R1 you still rely on driver support from Dell for the hybrid. A hard switch and reboot would allow you to use stock drivers from Intel and AMD or nVidia.
-
How exactly do I tell THX to use the headphones as speaker? When I open TruStudio Pro the only thing I can see are the speaker, surround and equalizer
-
It's the speaker setting. In order to change it, you have to plug something into the jack.
-
Ok I love my new laptop, but the camera is horrible! Is there any workaround or different driver than the default one? The image is so low contrast and dark. Even on my netbook the camera is better.
-
saturnotaku Notebook Nobel Laureate
I thought the R1 had a BIOS setting that allowed you to choose between integrated, discreet, and hybrid.
If you had it on discreet all the time, you could use the latest drivers but as you correctly point out, if you wanted to switch between the two, you would need the software from Dell. -
Nope, you can choose switchable and discreet only.
-
I think you guys are worrying about switchable graphics a little too much. The power optimization on the newer nvidia chips is actually done quite well. I have the 8150 with a 485m and the gpu will throttle down to 50 mhz when doing regular windows functions (ie not gaming). My old alienware m15x had switchable graphics and it is still running a driver from 07' because nvidia doesn't support hybrid graphics in their universal driver packages and alienware simply quit supporting it. Being a true gamer I could really care less about battery life, but seeing the power optimization on these newer chips I'm sure you could get several hours of battery life.
